Having access to many fine chain establishments as well as high end fine dining, this is a stand-out. If you are in Maine and don't visit, you are missing out on one of the best meals of your life. What a great dinner spot! My partner and I went after 9pm to avoid the wait (thanks yelpers for the tip). The place was almost packed with only one open table. We loved the dressed down vibe, wooden tables and music. They have a fantastic beer selection, but make sure to pick a backup choice in case they've run out of yours (regardless, you'll likely love whatever they bring). We had the Smuttynose Brett & I, the '11 Smuttynose Barleywine, and an IPA (not on the menu). All delicious! For eats, we had the caesar salad with fried sardine, the sake mussels, the short rib, and the cuban sandwich. We were literally scraping the dishes to get the last of it all! We showed up on a busy night and weren't sure if we would be able to get a table, but the hostess was very sweet and accommodating, getting us a table inside on a busy night. Our waitress was also very friendly and knowledgeable, and she even brought us a couple of magazines to peruse while we waited for our food Their menu is fresh and interesting, and everything we tried was delicious. The polenta fries were creamy and delicious, the watermelon salad was crisp and refreshing, the soup was spicy and delicious, and the mackerel was gorgeous. We finished with fresh sugar doughnuts with lemon curd and blueberry coulis, which was a perfect end to our end-of-summer meal. I would highly recommend the Black Birch. My second visit-- Went for a birthday dinner this weekend, party of 7 at 5:00 and were promptly seated at the community table! perfect timing, it got really busy right after. We all shared our plates!-- 2 orders of the deviled eggs to die for (but small small portion), mac & bleu cheese with bacon was perfection, bone marrow not my style but everyone loved it. chicken liver mousse on toast for the first time was better than i expected..Steak tartare was absolutely amazing, the tomato soup &grilled cheese was perfect as well, great roasted tomato flavor in the soup!!! (im running out of adjectives). The caesar with fried oysters was soooo good, although I think i remember the salad plate being warm which was weird. Lamb bolognese reminded me of my grandfather's, and the deep fried short rib was cooked to perfection. the sauces they chose for their dishes were complimentary and obviously VERY tasty. I didn't get to try the pork schnitzel but i was eyeing it from across the table and my dad LOVED it- said he felt like he was back at oktoberfest!! my favorite was probably the polenta fries & Broccoli spears-- there are no words.. we tried almost everything on the menu between all of us, and there was not a single complaint. I put my vegetarian tendencies on hold to try out all the great stuff here. So worth iT!!! I got the sharks tooth cocktail and it was light and citrusy with a nice kick, boyfriend got a few beers but his favorite was the petrus something, i cant remember.. (very sour) We tried both desserts offered- cinnamon sugar Doughnuts with apple butter and the vanilla bourbon creme brulee, both of which were absolutely amazing... as if i expected anything else the portion sizes were wonderful, after sharing everything plus desserts, we were all comfortably satisfied with our bellies and our tastebuds were definitely delighted. Truly as good as it gets! Creative, delicious, fresh, atmosphere, unpretentious, and friendly. Went with friends and shared everything, and there wasn't a miss among all that we tried. We did have to wait about a half an hour, and people that came after us waited even longer, but it was worth the wait. Well, worth it. Had the deviled eggs (great!), the poutine and duck confit (amazing!), deep fried short rib, brick chicken, coconut mussels, and more. The orange doughnuts for dessert were just terrific. Reasonably priced and well worth it all. They need more space but there was no feeling of being rushed. I loved it -- one of my best meals in a long, long time. Should you check this place out? Yes, you should. In fact, I signed up for a Yelp account just so I could recommend The Black Birch. I am probably as unsophisticated as you can get when it comes to food and choosing places to eat. I usually don't try new foods and my tastes are probably considered boring. So, I was pretty much terrified (though relieved when I saw donuts written on the chalk board) of the menu during my 1st visit as it was way out of my comfort zone. I never imagined eating duck rillette or poutine and duck confit. What's a rillette? What's a confit? I still don't know but it was amazing. Each small plate was like a mini adventure. Every larger dish was like a larger adventure. I have been back 2 other times with each time better than the last. So happy to have found this little gem. Went with a party of 5 around 7pm and only had to wait about 15 minutes. Tried to go an a Friday night, but wait was 45 mins+ so couldn't make it with our movie time. Food is excellent! Add us to the deviled egg fans. We had the brick chicken, fish and chip and pork porterhouse - all wonderful. For desert we tried the cider donuts with apple butter - these beauties were fried to order so arrived piping hot and just scrumptious. Wait staff was friendly and attentive, without being overly involved. The only downsides are that the space is a bit cramped, but we had the luxurious window seat. The music was pretty loud and the selections didn't match the hipster-ish vibe of the place. There's something unique about the birch - food is delicious with a great mix of favorites, new things, rich things, simple things, best beer selection around, its small, warm, crowded, noisy but not loud, one feels totally comfortable eating there alone but also a really fun place to bring friends. Don't bring your kid here. Not family friendly at all, especially if you have a stroller or need to nurse. I wouldn't be peeved, but I called ahead to check about bringing my 6-month-old and was told it would not be a problem. It was, even with us coming in well before the dinner rush. I wasn't looking for a Friendly's family style dinner, but our baby's still young enough that we hoped we'd be able to enjoy this restaurant despite having him in tow. Oh well. Aside from that, loved the atmosphere, even though we nearly missed it from the non-descript exterior. Corn chowder was to die for, amazing flavors bursting with freshness in every bite. Duck rillet also quite nice. Great atmosphere, along the lines of many of the new industrial-rustic gastro-pubs popping up everywhere. This is my favorite spot on the Seacoast! I love the duck rillette and I also love their rotating devilled eggs selection. And I don't even like eggs! This has to be one of the best restaurants i have been to in a long time. I get to NH about 4 to 6 times a year on business but this was the first time that i made to Kittery for the evening for dinner. We did have to wait a while but now i know why. The food was amazing. The cocktails were unfamiliar but very tasty. I sat down and ordered the BRICK CHICKEN. The waitress was great, i did let her know what i have a few allergies which always baffles and sometimes annoys some restaurants. But she was a absolute gem! She listened very careful and made some suggestions of other things on the menu. But i did persist with my choice and she did all she could to make sure the food came to my liking. I am glad she did. I had a fab meal, and the bill came to nothing compared to the quality of food that i enjoyed. It was great. i would give this 5* every day of the week. read more

Phenomenal food. Fantastic mixology bar. Unique and hard to find beers. They have it all. The only bummer is the wait. At least 3 times a month we cruise by to see if we can get in and there is a line out the door. I truly wish they could find a bigger space. Always a treat my husband and I try to go at least twice a month. The food on the menu is great but the specials on the board are what I really look forward to. The pickles are all made there and change almost daily they are the perfect snack with a drink from the bar. The seating is a bit cozy so you can not help but chat with the people at the next table. This place makes me so happy. Gavin, Ben, & Jake started with their quest with a vision, and that same vision, has now claimed a piece of my brain and an even larger piece of my stomach.
