We have been to TBC plenty of times and our experience was always great. This is our go to cajun restaurant. Staff are nice and we really like the food. However, my rating is based on the experience I received yesterday 8/28 with the manager Devin. I order the Dungeness crab combo, extra sauce and a basket of chicken tenders. I was told there would be four pieces of chicken tenders, but once I opened the box, two of the four were tiny. So I went back to the window to complain. The guy up front got the manager and the first thing he says to me is "we don't know what the size of the tenders will be." I'm not stupid. I know when things don't match up, anyone would. Instead of apologizing, he defended giving a customer chicken that was a quarter of the size it should be. I asked for my money back for the tenders and he said he'll give me one chicken tender to replace the tiny one. I wasn't going to wait 20 minutes again for one tender, so instead he says he'll give me 10% off the chicken tenders. While the manager was at the register, the guy worker in the window kept on apologizing. I think he's been working there for a long time because I recognize him from the other times I would order at the window. Before I left, the manager finally apologized, but that should have been his initial reaction after i complained, not after he decides to give me 20% off of the tenders. read more

We were able to get our names in for reservation through Open Table. Quickly seated once we arrived, they are taking A LOT of Covid precautions including temperature checks, and not allowing removal of masks until we actually got our food. No silverware or straws are given, the environment is encouraged to eat with your hands. But when I asked, spoons and chopsticks were available. I do like this, because it reduces waste, compared to giving every table plastic silverware they would throw away. One disappointment was bringing half of my party's food out before the rest.. so we just sat there waiting until the rest came out. The shrimp was just okay. Other members of my party said, "the rice was the best part". I can't put my finger on it, but I just wasn't wowed by the shrimp- and I was very hungry. The last time we had a wait but they take down your number so we grabbed a drink at The Village bottle shop and tasting room while waiting. In the past we made a reservation and had no issues. Loved the whole Shabang- lover of spice but mild does heat up as you eat. Excellent service during both visits. My only complaint would be the drinks. Right off the bat I sat outside to wait for my boyfriend to get my wallet from the car so we could go into the restaurant and was badgered by staff asking if we were gonna eat in the establishment or not because I was sitting in their waiting area which was empty. The price is ridiculous paid $75 for one crab leg... First time I went was 2019, I spent the whole night throwing up. The second time I went was in 2021, I spent the whole night throwing up. I thought I had an allergy but I have never gotten sick from any other crab leg place on the island. This time I went (May 2023), I came here with my boyfriend (who knows a lot more about seafood than me). He immediately noticed that the crab bent and did not crack (I didn't know that this was a bad sign). Upon commenting on this, I felt sick to my stomach as I remembered the two previous times I came here. I decided not to eat any of the food (100 dollar meal) besides the potato and corn (I also tried the shrimp but it was soooo over cooked, it immediately turned into mush in my mouth). As we left the restaurant, my boyfriend immediately felt sick to his stomach. Not even 20 mins after leaving the restaurant, he was throwing up on the side of the road. When I tell you this guy has an iron stomach... I was genuinely shocked that the food made him this sick. The same night I threw up multiple times a couple hours later (after feeling nauseous for hours). I hardly had any food because I was scared of getting sick... How is this place not shut down??? Not to mention, our server was great, but the server at the table next to us got soooo much attitude from their server. The customer was even saying "look I'm not trying to get into an argument" with the server continuing to be rude to the customer. PLEASE DO NOT GO HERE. There are fresher crab places on the island. This place is so good. We've been coming here for years on vacation and then when we moved here it became a regular spot for us. We always get the king crab and then add what we want in the bag as we don't care for what comes in the combos. We love their whole sha-bang seasoning with the medium spice level! Great ratio of crab to fries. The bang bang shrimp is good. Seasoned well. The fried oysters is my favorite. Oysters are smaller had bigger before but the batter to oyster ratio is even.. I ordered a bag but I didn't like it.. it was to messy and everything cam in separate bags so it occupied the table space and left me little space to eat on. Customer service here is top class. We went a bit earlier than the dinner rush because I know our Dallas location has an hour wait in line and we were hungry. It is a bit pricey (our ticket was over $100 for the food pictured here) and you don't get to pick and chose your combo (all come with shrimp, clams, and mussels) so if you don't care for any of that it's too bad. My mom and I wanted to try someplace new. I told her ,I've heard Boiling Crab was good. I've never been there but I see it has people waiting. First time Crab Boil experience here we come! Glancing over the menu we both knew that we wanted the King Crab legs! We're the type that likes variety so we hot the combo. The very kind server Kyle told us the most popular is the Mixed Sauce. Combines garlic butter, Cajun and lemon butter. We went with that and level of spice mild, because we were warned by our server medium may get a little hot over time. Everything but the rice comes out in plastic bags. One with the king crab, one with the mussels,clams and shrimp and a 3rd bag with delicious sausages,red potatoes and corn on the cob. So happy we got the mild because it had enough of a kick and all the garlic and lemon was very tasty on all the items. We got 2 very large ,perfectly cooked ,meaty,king crab legs! The mussels were a decent size and tender. Happily surprised the shrimp were perfectly cooked. Growing up Asian we don't mind peeling the shells off the shrimp. That's where the flavor is ! Came here last night with my family. My brother and sister love this place and my brother was craving it last night. I'm used to waiting hours in line for boiling crab in San Jose, but I have never had to wait here in Honolulu. We were seated immediately at 7:30pm on a Friday. One thing to note about The Salt at Kakaako, besides the parking in the structure, street parking is definitely limited, we parked a few blocks away given how busy the plaza is. Ordering at Boiling Crab can be overwhelming if it is your first time there. Luckily, they have combo meals that come with a little bit of everything. It is perfect for sharing with 4-5 people, but just keep in mind that you won't be getting much of the crab that you choose. You will get a bunch of shrimp, muscles, clams and sausage! Which is my favorite do I didn't mind surrending all the crab legs to my brother. The meal also comes with two sides of rice but I always enjoy their salt and pepper fries, so I got some of that on the side. I always order the combination sauce, spicy level medium. A few shrimps in I was already sweating, which is where a fry dunked in a bunch of ketchup comes in handy. I think that this is a great place to come with a large group. It is a very social and casual environment. You just have to be ready to get dirty and work for your food. I was wearing a cute blouse before dinner and once my family settled on coming here for dinner I changed out of that top into something I didn't mind getting dirty if the bib didn't catch everything. Though I don't remember if the restaurant had any desserts, they do have margaritas and beers. Additionally, there are many dessert options in the same plaza to grab after dinner. This is the best place for that New Orleans flavor crab boil. We got the Snow Crab Combo, I highly recommend it. Flavor was off the charts good! The Crab fries they had listed as a new item was also off the charts... We had a choice between Cajun and Lemon Pepper. We chose the Cajun...I can come back here just for the fries alone. We came in around 5:00 and got a table within a few minutes so not much of a wait all all. Huge plus already. I had a mad craving for shrimp and decided on 1/2lb of lemon pepper and a 1/2lb of crawfish with shabang medium. Everyone else in my group ordered snow crab and mussels so we ended up eating family style for the variety of most items on the menu. We were probably there 5 minutes when the surge of customers poured in and we were glad we got there when we did. This place is busy. Taylor was our waitress and she took good care of us the entire time. She made sure we had lemons, shell buckets, tools and also made sure all of us got our bibs on. For some reason, food always tastes better when you're wearing a bib. I don't know why, it's just a fact. I wish every restaurant provided bibs, I'd be donning one every day. I would save a fortune on laundry and I could eat all my meals without worrying about spilling on myself, something that happens 95% of the time. I'll give credit to The Boiling Crab for starting the trend. One of the tables next to us was asking about live crawfish and I overheard their waitress telling them about the restrictions of shipping live crawfish to Hawaii. Just in case you're wondering why BC is selling frozen. Every restaurant in Hawaii can only sell frozen so you won't be able to find live any where locally. I went with my family and we ordered a bunch of stuff to try; crab (snow and king), fries (cajun, lemon pepper and original), fried oysters, catfish, chicken tenders and a few other things I can't recall. Everything was good. My favorite was the fried oysters! They came out steaming hot with this delicious spicy dipping sauce. Of all the fries I enjoyed the lemon pepper best but they were all tasty. The crab was a little over cooked for my liking and the cajun spice and lemon pepper flavelars tasted the same to me, maybe they got the orders wrong? Either way I still ate it...all, lol. Decided to head here for date night with the boyf. You need to call and make a reservation ahead of time. Called at 6pm and they were able to fit us in at 8pm. Arrived at 7:35pm, was seated shortly after at 7:50pm. The place is big and has upstairs seating so even at half capacity due to COVID, it still looked busy (and it was) We ordered the fried oysters, jambalaya and King crab combo. The Jambalaya was good, too soupy for my taste but the flavors were there. I ordered it with rice and I thought the amount of rice that came with the jambalaya was so small, about the size of a ping pong ball (maybe smaller). Makes sense to just order it without the rice. The fried oysters were delish, comes with six or seven oysters and fries. By the time the king crab combo came we had barely enough room in our tummies, yet we found it in ourselves to continue stuffing our faces. What a mess we made! I usually order a non sweetened iced tea with lemon but the server said the lemons were downstairs, so I guess it would have been a hassle to let her go back stairs, right? ( I mean, if it wasn't why would you mention it?) Anyway, I survived without the lemon. Besides that, the customer service was good if you were able to flag them down. My fiancé and I love coming here! This is the one place we don't mind making the trip to the city for. The customer service is amazing, everyone's so nice and helpful. They have been on top of everything in response to covid. They take your name & address down, take your temperature upon arrival, wear your face mask until the food arrives and have you sanitize your hands. I just expected good food but they even packed a table cover, limes, salt, pepper, wipes, and bibs for me so we could get the full experience in our home. That was an amazing touch! I'm still too scared to eat out, it was nice that the Boiling Crab make the takeout experience so much better :) Got the king crab combo (mild Cajun flavor) and it was packed with flavor. I am so the wrong person to take to Boiling Crab. Seafood that you have to pull out of a messy saucy bag to peel & crack -- the neurotic in me shudders at the thought of it. Also, I don't (usually) eat crab legs or crawfish, but their menu has just the thing for a picky eater like me -- Sha Bang Bang Shrimp with a side of white rice. The fried shrimp are coated in a combo of their three seasonings: cajun, garlic, & lemon pepper. Flavorful but my stomach can't handle the greasiness. Nice servers. this has to be the worst experience I ever had. when I entered the door, there was nobody there to greet us so we headed up upstairs, the previous time we ate there we ate upstairs and we were unaware that they weren't open upstairs during the daytime. we saw a kiosk at the top of the stairs I figured that's where we were seated because no one greeted us at the door. when I got to the top of the stairs I heard someone yell loud and embarrassing" hey, excuse me What are you guys doing?" I looked down and told her you're not supposed to talk to customers like that, don't have an attitude, because I was upset. she then twisted up her face at me and said I don't have an attitude.. but her face was filled with nothing but attitude. she never apologized or said sorry. she then walked us to her boss. Who repeated to us you what are you guys doing upstairs? I told him we didn't know it was closed. and I told him that his employee had an attitude. he never apologized for that.. and all of the other workers started to jump in the conversation ,and back her up instead of apologizing for the misunderstanding. at the end, he said, what do you guys want? as if he doesn't realize that we were there to eat.. in this situation I feel I was mistreated, but even if I wasn't, which I was. they don't understand the first rule of business, which is the Is always right. Sometimes you just want to tear in to your dinner. You just want to abandon all your social norms and upbringing and eat like a 15th century barbarian! In this day and age, where food is becoming more and more popular, of course someone would come up with an establishment to oblige. Enter: Boiling Crab! I've actually eaten with them before while living in Anaheim. And they were the first type of seafood boil that I'd ever visited. It's worth the experience, just be sure to not wear white or light colors and be sure to come with a good appetite. I'd like to advise that you'll probably have to go a few times before you know how to get your perfect order, but the food is always good so it's not to trying of a culinary journey. Also, all of the ones that I've been two (2 in California, 1 in Hawaii) all of my servers have been extremely nice and willing to help out with a suggestion! Personally I like their signature sauce with a pound of shrimp and a pound of crab with a half pound of sausage. Potatoes and corn are also a good addition. We always go so hard on the entree's that I've never made it to dessert. And FYI: they make fantastic drinks and have great beer selection. So when you feel like de-stressing over a meal or just want to satisfy the Id and have a primal type dinner with fantastic flavor, give The Boiling Crab a try.
