I have been coming here for years with family and friends. I have always loved the atmosphere and the food, especially their tomato bisque! However the past few times I have gotten food from Brownstone to go, it is ridiculously expensive for two sandwiches and two cups of soup, almost $25! Now I could understand this if they're sandwiches were carefully crafted and loaded with ingredients but the last two times I have ordered only one side of my sandwich has mayo on it, the bacon is so hard it's inedible and the lettuce (or sometimes sprouts are either falling off the sandwich edge or only on one side of the sandwich again. I would love to keep coming here but for the price and the lack of care being put into the food, I may be visiting other restaurants in the villa del sol instead. read more

First off our server(hispanic woman) seemed really unfriendly & Grumpy,,put off bad vibes etc. Second my food(Breakfast) came out wrong & i had to have it remade twice....and when it finally came out right..the food was only mediocre. when i first mentioned my food being wrong to my server..there as no apology & No offer to correct it. First of all, I hate being a complainer, and really hate leaving bad reviews, but I need to say my piece. Secondly, anything I say here is not to be seen as a dig towards front of house staff. I used to work in a restaurant, and I know they try their best. My bestie and I visited today at around noon after discovering most other places had a 30-45 minute wait time. We were hungry, so we didn't want to wait that long. We arrived at The Brownstone and were seated immediately inside to avoid the ever-warming sun. The atmosphere was OK, if a bit old, but I enjoyed The Beach Boys playing. And it appeared only 2 people were working the entire front of house, inside and out. It took several minutes to get out drinks. I got a large OJ, and the bestie ordered a water with lemon. Her water arrived without lemon, and after a few minutes, we managed to flag our server again who then informed us that no lemon was not available, but offered cucumber instead. A nice alternative, but it should have been offered at the time of ordering. As for food, we both ordered the Country Breakfast with an additional side of potatoes. Folks, here lies the big disappointment. The eggs, while cooked properly, and with cheddar cheese at our request, were very bland and required additional seasoning. The same can be said for the "seasoned potatoes" (cold, undercooked, and no hint of seasoning), and the biscuits and gravy (biscuits were cold and dry, covered in gravy in name only-no taste at all). Over all, the only things that had any flavor on their own were sausage links (which are very good) and the OJ. To be honest, I ate everything because I was hungry, but it was not particularly enjoyable. And, again, I understand the server slowness was not their fault. 2 people working 15-20 tables at once by themselves is going to cause understandable delays. I will not be in Fullerton again for a while, and when I am, I don't believe we will be returning here. Sorry, Brownstone, we wanted to like you. I will admit that I'm a coffee snob and typically judge whether or not I'm willing to go back to a place based on how good their coffee is. This place does not have good coffee. The food here has always been really good. And the ambience when you're sitting in the courtyard is also lovely. So I do go back. They don't have to offer a variety of coffee, just have one that is good. Depending on what time you go, there's always a crowd and not enough staff to manage it. Those who are there are running around and doing the best they can. But for the same price, there are other options that have really good coffee and really good service. It took about 20 minutes to get our orders in, and about 20 more to get our food. My spinach apple salad was underwhelming. While we were eating, our sever told us they were closing at 2 (not 3:30 as posted). There were still a few other customers also. The whole experience was rude and rushed. This place has had too many chances to redeem itself from me. I was willing to give it one last chance since Yelp had a special for 50% off one entree. Brownstone, you've had your last chance. Like a really bad breakup, I have nothing but nasty things to say about you. We were a perfect match. You were near my job and work, and you made me delicious sandwiches. What's the point in having a sign then? The last and final straw to this dwindling relationship was that f*cking coupon. We arrived and had to sit outside because there was a rancid smell inside the restaurant. Raw sewage would be the best way to describe it. When we were seated and our soup was brought out, my boyfriend's bowl was cold. We ordered Matt's special sandwich which normally comes with squaw bread, avocado, sliced apples, lettuce, brie, and it's all lightly dressed with balsamic vinegar. Our waitress informed us they were out of squaw bread. My bf then gets it on rye bread. When his sandwich comes out, it ends up being a big cluster of mush in between two pieces of stale bread. Where should I begin? The brie had wax still on it, the apples were not cored and still had seeds in them, the avocado had brown on it and to top it all off, everything was drowning in balsamic. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich which lucky for me, was pretty good. The service has always been notoriously slow here, but as long as food is good I'm willing to wait. I was utterly disappointed by this cafe. I decided to have my brunch here with all my bridesmaids. It was supposed to be special because it was everyone's first time meeting each other. However that moment was dampened by our experience at this lame "cafe." Right when we got seated, I ordered a round of celebratory champagnes for all my girls. As we're chatting and finalized our menu decisions, the waitress comes out and tells me there is no more champagne. Strike 1. I was a bit disappointed but whatever. When we were finally ready to order, the waitress realized that she gave us the WRONG menu. She gave us the lunch menu when they were serving only bfast. Strike 2. Now all the gals had to change their order which would take another 20 minutes. As we were ordering, the waitress was tryna pitch this mexican bfast dish to us. We were already irritated with her so we just decided to get that dish to get her outta our hair. She then comes back to tell us that they ran out of ingredients to make that dish. UGH! We got there around 10:45 this morning. Took our drink order and we settled in. After looking around we noticed a few dreadful things. There was a fine coat of dust on the shelves of hutch server behind us. The grout on the floor is actually cream colored, I know this because I found a few clean spots. The current color across the entire floor of the dining area is greasy black! Remember, this is 11:am: to our right there was an entire buffet table in disarray and left over from the previous night. A greasy bowl of salad dressing leftovers, crumbs and empty tureens and serving utensils. I can assure you that the floor was not mopped from last nights affair, pieces of food were all over tiles. My wife ordered a Bloody Mary, it came with a celery stalk that was ridiculously limp. How someone could have pulled that from the fridge and felt confident about their selection is testimony to the morale of the staff and management. When this was pointed out the server made no attempt to resolve it. Drinks were rarely refilled and follow through was tepid. My omelette was good my wife was very put off by her biscuits and gravy. This place is a goldmine of potential regarding its location, a true restaurant investor should gut it, renovate it and do it justice. Sadly the current owner lacks that vision or even common food service skills and hospitality. Never going back there. read more

I wish I could give The Brownstone Café higher ratings but both my eating experiences have been just "meh" at best. My latest experience was this past Tuesday for breakfast. There were only 3 other "parties" there but our service was very slow and the food took quite some time to reach our table. I had the Country Breakfast that came with 2 Biscuits with Gravy, potatoes, Eggs over easy, and bacon. The potatoes and bacon were pretty tasty but the gravy had no flavor and my eggs were barely cooked. My sister and bro-in-law both ordered the Meat Lovers Omelets but felt like there wasn't a lot of meat in it despite the name. The bf ordered the Pesto Sausage Omelet and thought it was yummy--good meat to egg ratio. As for our drip coffee, it was quite watery. I hadn't tried Brownstone Cafe before, so I thought I'd check it out with my girlfriend and her parents. Menu looked appetizing and so we sat down outside. It took our waitress 3 attempts to locate a beer they had in stock. Mind you, they only have 4 beers on the menu... We ordered our drinks and made our selections from the menu consisting of soup, salads, wraps and sandwiches. To start, we had the bruschetta which was great... and then it all went downhill. After noshing on the Bruschetta we made our decisions and ordered the Brownstone Blast (BLTA), Villa Club sandwich, Chicken Club and a bowl of their "famous tomato basil soup." None of our adjustments to the sandwiches seemed to get to the cook, but after walking around downtown we were hungry and didn't care. Comments came from around the table... "This soup tastes like pizza sauce... They put mushrooms in my salad (my friend is allergic)..." and then I took a bite of my chicken club. First taste, the squaw bread was great... then the rubbery texture of the chicken struck me... I put down my sandwich only to see that the CHICKEN WAS RAW in the middle. Shiny, pink and RAW. I couldn't believe it. I spit out my bite into my napkin and went to seek out the manager. I found her inside near the dimly lit kitchen and preperation area; I told her about my sandwich and she argued with me! She said that the chicken was freshly grilled and couldn't believe the chicken in my sandwich was raw. I couldn't believe it! What happened to the customer is always right? I had a table of people who agreed the chicken was raw! The manager took the sandwich and explained she was short staffed and offered to get me another sandwich; I cut her off... First, why was she arguing with me? Second, no way did I want to play Russian Roulette with Salmonella! I told her no thank you, that I'd just eat the fruit I'd ordered. Needless to say, this ruined our lunch experience and we were eager to leave. Upon paying the check I had hoped for a sincere apology... instead I received an argumentative manager who left a bad taste in my mouth. Garden salad with grilled chicken - the chicken was dry and cold. The salad and dressing reminded me of cafeteria bar food. Customer service - my friends and I didn't get served for a long time (maybe 30 mins?). Which was fine for a while because we were catching up. Although while the service was ok I want to say this is one of the worst restaurants I have ever visited. To start off, let me say i was extremely excited to eathere as i live within walking distance and am always on the prowl for new places to eat. I'm very easy to please foodwise. I ordered a glass of wine that came to me not only with the cork bits floating in it but the glass itself was filthy. Not fingerprints alone but LIPSTICK on the rim! I did not complain (as i am one of those people who has seen the movie Waiting) and did not imbibe. I ordered the ahi tuna salad (my favorite) It was ok, but after a few bites of fish I noted an "off" taste, fishy: and fresh fish should not smell nor taste fishy/rotten. I stopped eating and just enjoyed a nice conversation with my party. 30 minutes after we left I felt the biggest migraine I have ever had and the flesh of my arms, chest and face turned deep red - NOT GOOD. I was rushed to the ER wherein they told me I had histamine poisoning. Histamine poisoning comes from fish that has spoiled and consumed, and this is despite cooking so even if i had ordered a cooked filet i would have gotten this poisoning. This was the only meal I had eaten and since it was a very specifc type of food poisoing accompanied with very specific symptoms (no nausea, just the migraine and redness) I can only attribute it to this restaurant. I emailed the restaurant with my findings and received no response at all. It's not worth my time to go there and speak with the manager but i have reported them and will never eat there again. I truly wish it had been better and I am glad others have had good experiences. I wish I had been luckier. read more

We were immediately seated at Brownstone in a shady outdoor spot on a crowded Sunday morning while Rialto's wait was another 45 minutes. We ordered a breakfast pizza, the one with avocados (but the waiter brought us the wrong one; no harm, he's new), a berry stuffed ricotta french toast (thinking about that is making me drool at 9:30pm), and a pesto omelette (just fine and dandy, that's all). The prices range from $11-14 for those 3 items, which I feel is a bit pricey. I came once at 8am before the morning rush, and each plate was loaded with potatoes, so much more than what we got at 10am...maybe they figured they had to be more sparing? dunno. Kimmie's is still my family's favorite Fullerton breakfast spot, but Brownstone comes at a far second. read more

I guess if you are trying to eat more vegetarian you have to ask LOTS of questions. The food was great though. Also had the sun dried tomato omelet and they let you add beyond any of the toppings for $1 each additional item. Got a cranberry juice and 2 coffees, bill was around $28. Brownstone is more know for breakfast, but for me.....the breakfast menu is fine, not great. However, the lunch menu (they close at 4pm so there is no dinner menu) is flat out great. The paninis, pastas, sandwhiches, salads......and the tomato bisque soup--all tasty and fresh and nicely prepared. The ambience of Villa Del Sol is hard to beat, and Brownstone has the best overall location in the Villa. Service can be SLOW....I think they really manage the labor costs here to make the finances work, but there is no denying the food is very yummy, the location perfect.....and that is enough for 4 stars. read more

The stuffed french toast = amazingness. The flavors that this breakfast marvel holds are bliss. One of my favorite breakfast meals of all time. And now for one of my favorite lunch meals: Tomato basil soup and a Turkey Panini. First of all the soup absolutely delicious, a must try. My friend was visiting her family in Orange County for a few days and we hadn't seen each other in ages so we decided to meet up in an equidistant location. After some vigorous Yelping my friend and I decided that despite some of the reviews, The Brownstone Cafe was the a good choice. We just figured all those people were just bitter about service, "they're just assholes," we thought... The food was good, it wasn't great. Initially, I ordered the breakfast pizza, but after a few minutes the waiter came back and told me they were out of dough, or something, I actually don't remember the excuse anymore, I just couldn't have it. Instead I ordered the southwestern burrito, and I asked that they add avocado. My burrito arrived, it was good, the salsa that it's served with was actually really tasty, but it had no avocado. And our waiter, well, I think my friend put it best when after the umpteenth unfullfilled request said, "he just needs to leave and go play hackey-sack or something." I am not one of those assholes about service, I swear. I hate to say it, but my fellow Yelpers were right about The Brownstone Cafe. read more

This is a quaint cafe with a nice courtyard area if you are dining outside. They have a fair amount of sandwich, salad, panini, wrap and soup options. Staff is friendly and they seem to be able to accommodate special requests for order modifications (no mushrooms, change the meat, etc.) I tried the Veggie Special, which has cheese, avocado, cucumber, carrots, tomato, sprouts and mushrooms - I opted for no mushrooms. It came with potato salad, which had an interesting yogurt-like creamy dressing - very good. I was pleasantly surprised that my veggie sandwich was not only good, but kept me full! Here's what you should put aside while reading my review. Put aside the fact that every time I've gone here, the service is just a hair above bad. Not because the servers are insulting (obviously), but because the servers just don't seem to care. I understand working at a hip cafe on a Sunday morning might be boring, but it's good money! Put aside the fact that every time I've gone here, I had to wait to be seated not because there weren't any open tables, but because no one is ever at the host's desk to actually seat anyone. Literally, I walk inside, look around, and I see no one. What I don't want you to put aside is this: the biggest issue I had with my experiences here is that the quality wavers so much from visit to visit. The only reason I gave two stars is because I have had a good meal here. But then the next time I go, it could be a very boring meal on par with Denny's - and that's far cheaper. Lots of dining choices in downtown Fullerton for lunch. Chose Brownstone because we had not been there in years. Here is the break down: Service was initially friendly but that seemed to change after we asked a couple questions about our orders after they had arrived. I am not a marinara and pasta person but I ordered the thai chicken penne because the description said it was penne in a peanut sauce. A more accurate description would have been penne with marinara sauce with a touch of peanut sauce flavor. The chicken was also completely bland without any seasoning on it whatsoever. One of the orders was a wrap that was supposed to have avocado in it and the person in our party who ordered it had to unwrap it in order to determine if there was any chicken or avocado in it. The Wrap was almost completely romaine lettuce. Never received refills on our water. At least 15 minutes after we had finished eating the check had still not come and we had to ask a passing waitress for it. 2 stars for the inside ambience and beautiful courtyard their patio is part of. I came here back in July. I don't remember anything particularly stellar about this place. The service was really good. I got an omelet that had sundries tomatoes in it- I believe. And it was alright. The side potatoes were a bit on the bland side. What was gross was that when my friends and I ordered glasses of water... There were those tiny little bugs in them. Ordered the Browstone Benedict and the S'mores French toast, paired it with some mango spritzer. The brunch was absolutely delicious! I've never had such amazing Benedict and French toast before. The mango spritzer was also very good and gave me the refresher I needed and wanted. The only thing that made me rate this as 4 stars instead of 5 is because when we asked for water, they served us room temperature water from the tap. This place has been a family favorite breakfast location for years, though I never had the chance to try it out until recently. The restaurant has an old-time, warm feel to it and is definitely welcoming. I can't speak on behalf of their breakfasts, as I only went for lunch. I ordered the pesto chicken pasta (penne, grilled chicken, pesto, mushroom) served with a garden salad and french roll. The grilled chicken was a little on the burnt side and I noticed almost no pesto in the dish. Instead, all I could really taste was charred chicken with what seemed like an inordinate amount of rosemary. The waitstaff unfortunately didn't seem especially attentive. Two mistakes were made on my order and the restaurant wasn't busy at the time. I really wanted to love this place more because my family has such high praises of both the food and the family that owns the place, but I honestly left a little underwhelmed. I am not sure what has happened to the Brownstone. A few years ago, I visited the Brownstone and was intrigued by the cozy little cafe set within the plaza. The short-listed but good variety menu pleased me that I was a repeat customer. I enjoyed the place so much that my family surprised me with Brownstone catering and a cake almost two years ago. I hadn't been to the cafe in over two years (you know how it goes, work encapsulates you...) and, well, last week, I went for breakfast and would someone please tell me what happened to the place? As far as service, the server was pleasant and attentive- smiling and refilling coffee repeatedly. There were three tables in use and she hopped from party to party. Two stars for service. I looked around the cafe and happened to look down through the glass tabletop. I don't think the base of the table has EVER been cleaned. Then I started to look at the walls and the floor- the baseboards, etc. and I was a bit put off. Has anyone ever mopped or cleaned anything beyond the tabletop? I wonder. The menu has changed in two years; it much more extensive and prices have gone up (understandable given the economy- people dont eat out as much, you hafta make it up somehow)...however, I ordered the sun-dried tomato omelet (ingredients listed?
