Uhh, it pains me to write this review. We come to Southern California about once a year and when we are in Fullerton this is our first stop. We have came here the past 6 years and it was the best breakfast, we loved it. There is an awesome courtyard that has beautiful flowers and soft music, it's so nice that they welcome pets, we brought our mini Schnauzer "Hazel" there is seating inside and outside, it's so beautiful we always choose outside. Ok here goes, we waited way to long to be seated, it wasn't that busy . When we did get seated we were promptly brought some nice cold water , very refreshing, 10 minutes later we were brought menus then 15 minutes more and our order was taken , 25 minutes after that our food came and they were out of biscuits so they gave me a English muffin and gravy, the eggs were cold, the bacon was cold, even the English muffin was cold and the potatoes were cold. It seemed like it was an inconvenience for our waitress to come to our table, that was disappointing, my wife's food was the same, she did say the fruit was good. If I could give this experience a zero or negative I would. We will be back next year and we will try it again maybe, we are looking to Yelp to find a new breakfast spot, cannot recommend at this time. read more

Brownstone has been in business for years, and has a good location downtown. In order to keep staying in business, however, improvements to food and service need to be made. There was one waitress, and two people in the kitchen. They are understaffed, however, our waitress was rude, and it took them 40 minutes to bring out our food, when they were not busy. In addition, the food was not good. $13.00 for a sauce container size fruit bowl, and a burnt and dry croissant. The courtyard is a beautiful setting, however, save your money, get better food, and have better service elsewhere. I recommend Early Bird though you'll have to grab a spot before they get packed. Mulberry Street and Realto have great settings, food, and service as well. Hope to see improvements in the future! read more

This place has such a cute location, it's a little difficult to find but it's so precious. It is very small and there are only so many people working there so I wouldn't recommend larger parties than 5 to dine. I got the cinnamon stuffed French toast it was my favorite and the breakfast burrito was just ordinary but still good! My favorite part of this place was their little desert plate that I saw another table getting. There were a variety of pasties being offered and they looked so delicious! This place isn't that expensive and is a great place to go to. I don't like speaking poorly of small business but my recent experience here on Sunday was truly subpar and I'd warn others to try better options in the area. My party arrived before me so I had them place my order while I was on my way. I got there about 30-40 minutes after and my my food was not done yet. My party warned me the service was slow here, not a problem I get times are hard right now. I checked in with a female waitress on my order and she told me quite rudely "we were backed up so I didn't put in your order. I told them to hold off on making it because it wouldn't have made a difference." I was very confused and asked on clarification if my order had been started yet and how much longer it would take since my party has been done eating. Again she rudely replied "No. It's going to take 10 minutes from when I put in the order now" and walked off before I could say anything else. I immediately went to another waitress in the front to cancel my order (she was much nicer). Somehow they were able to still present my order to me 5 minutes later. Ultimately the meal was underwhelming. The eggs were over cooked, potatoes were undercooked, and I wished the biscuit had been toasted but it was just soft mush. Overall given the long wait time and rude service, I can't say it justifies average food. read more

Environment, the courtyard is nice. Coffee is meh, $4 for a cup of diner coffee. Server NEVER came by to ask if we wanted a refill when our cups were near empty. Food tastes fairly good, except the food temperature can be better (not hot enough) Service is poor. When part of the item we ordered is not available(the fruits on top of the French toast), the server didn't ask if we wanted something else and made the decision to bring us a different kind of French toast. Beautiful shaded outdoor patio next to the main fountain. Very nice and quiet as well. Which was nice because you'll be sitting and waiting for your order a bit. Once you visit this establishment you'll want to support this great little find over and over! This is my favorite morning spot in Fullerton! the Courtyard is fabulous! This is a family owned and operated restaurant with the two wonderful owners doing it all (plus an occasional waitperson when busy). If you're in a hurry, try to not be. Enjoy the experience. Sit outside and you'll feel like you're stepping back in time to old Fullerton, and enjoy a quiet cup of coffee or tea, a hearty breakfast or lunch, and add a Bloody Mary or Mimosa if you're so inclined. The food is filled with lots of flavor and the menu has something for everyone, from bagels to full meals. If there's any negative to share, it's that the table service, although excellent, kind, genuine, and filled with pride of ownership and good intent, might be on "island time" (smiles). I don't know any other way to say this other than "just don't take offense to it". The experience and food compensate fully for any deficit in the service. First timers! Even though we saw the ratings at three star we wanted to see how true those 3- star reviews were. As per my 4 Star review, we disagee. We had a great experience at Brownstone, we had the County breakfast, Lox and Bagels with a side of eggs and coffees. The coffee was delicious, perfect level of strength right in the middle. The eggs were nice and fluffy. Potatoes were nice a crispy, maybe a tad under seasoned but still good. The country biscuits with gravy were bomb. I want this place to be good, but its simply not. First things first, the food there is not good. I ordered waffles and eggs, and I got half a (frozen) waffle. It was tasteless, cold on the edges, and unremarkable. Service was not good either, the entire time the staff was basically MIA. Wait times were very long, for a restaurant that was not busy at all. Lastly, the seating situation was tragic. The tables all kind of blend into each other, they are way too close together and not very ergonomic. Seating is awkward, the only comfortable place to sit was in the back of the restaurant where we felt we were overlooked and forgotten. The first visit we made to this place was good and so was the food. However; the second and third try was an epic fail. Both times , we were not acknowledged with a simple, " we will be right with you." The servers just kept walking by us. We thought it was due to just being busy, although it is still not an excuse to ignore a patron. We decided to give the restaurant another chance with a 3rd visit, but they failed again. They really played the part of being mute and blind quite well by not acknowledging your presence. Customer service was beyond horrible. We gave our business to Rialto Cafe instead. Meh.... another disappointment. My husband was scoping out a new place to try as it was his week to choose what to have for our weekly Sunday breakfast outing. This was a new one and they had various intriguing french toasts. So, off we went. I was not feeling like having a sweet breakfast. There are very few places where I will do that. I was going to go with my usual fallback and get the eggs benedict, until I noticed that they use country gravy for their sauce which did not sound that great to me personally. I decided to go with the Brownstone Breakfast Sandwich on wheat. I was also happy with this decision as it came with fruit, where almost every other dish came with potatoes and would charge you a whopping $2 to substitute with fruit or tomato slices. Whhhhaaattttt?! Plus I was not that hungry so I wanted something smaller. My husband was deciding between the s'mores stuffed french toast or the berry. He went with the Very Berry Day - berry stuffed french toast. Part of my deterrent from this today is not only did I not feel like having something sweet, they use baguettes and that sounded even more heavy to me. I had ordered my egg as fried. It is the first time I was asked in which way, easy, medium, or hard. Um... medium I guess. I have never been asked that personally. It was always scrambled, fried, over easy, or sunny side up. I was a bit confused when she asked me if I wanted bacon or sausage considering I got the sandwich as is. Tick tock.... tick tock... time kept going. Only one guy was ahead of us and he had finished his plate, got a to go coffee, paid, and left. Thirty minutes went by. No one else was there. Finally a guy came out and asked who ordered the Brownstone Breakfast. I blanked for a moment and said it was mine. Hmm... that was not what I ordered. I got the regular breakfast and not the sandwich. So, I got the potatoes as well which was not what I was going for. That explains the bacon. The positive here is that it is not too much different but deconstructed, no cheese, but a dollar cheaper. Not the point though. How do you mess up one of the orders when we are the only ones there? More people came in later but not when we ordered. I know it was the waitress who did not hear me right. I better brush up on my English. The bacon was very crispy which I liked. The potatoes were so so, but I wanted fruit that would not be smacked with a $2 charge. If I knew I was having a regular breakfast I would have ordered sunny side up eggs, as my dipping was next to nothing in getting yolk. The toast was hard even though it was not burnt. My husband did not say much about his other than the potatoes were meh and this was an average place for him. We waited for a while for iced tea refills, and half of my husband's refill landed on the table and not in the cup, and unnoticed. I am not enticed to come back, but who knows. My husband mentioned coming back only to try the s'mores french toast, so if that happens then we will be back. read more

I've had this place a few times and I've yet to be let down. The service here is good - the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. The ambience here is also very nice, especially sitting in the courtyard - it's very relaxing and it's kind of hidden away from the hustle and bustle of Downtown Fullerton. My favorite would be their pesto omelette - it's delicious and for its price, it serves a pretty big portion. I also tried their sundried tomato omelette and it was good, but I liked their pesto omelete (should have listened to the waitress when she told me she liked the pesto omelette more). A tip: if you don't like an ingredient in your omelette and want to substitute it, it may come at an extra cost (e.g. avocado). I'll definitely be back and definitely recommend a visit if you're craving a good brunch place! read more

I was taking Jeff back to Palm Springs. As per usual, he suddenly decides he wants to eat brunch. So, he says to look for a Denny's. I pull off on one street, get myself turned around and we end up in downtown Fullerton. By chance, we stumble upon the Brownstone Cafe. We chose to sit outside in the colonnade right off of the courtyard. Nice little place to sit. A bouncy waitress, a la Gwen Stefani harajuki girl, comes up to drop off menus. She asks if we would like something to drink. I can't even open my mouth to say something and she runs off, literally. I look at Jeff and I feel the sinking feeling in my stomach. Time and time again I've told myself to just leave when the first impression of service is bad. I did not listen. When she came back to take our order (and drink order for a 2nd time), she gushed at everything that we suggested. "Oh, you will LOOOOOVE the tomato bisque. I promise!" (said when Jeff ordered the 1/2 tuna on rye and the soup.) Then she said, "yum!" I ordered the chicken club sandwich on squaw bread and slaw. "The 'ma slaw' oh good choice! Awesome." Then we asked for water. When she brought the waters, she placed Jeff's down and then plopped mine down. Water splashed all over the table and she ran off to the big group in the middle of the courtyard. A few minutes later, she brought out our plates. Jeff commented that the bread on his sandwich was super fresh. He ate everything on his plate, so I'm assuming that he liked it. The chicken on my sandwich was charbroiled chicken jerky. It was super dry and tough and didn't even have a good flavor. It looked, however, perfect. I ended up pulling the sandwich apart and cobbling together a pitiful BLT. (the sandwich had mayo, which I don't remember seeing on the menu. Yuck!) The slaw was horrifying. It was super watery and had no real flavor to it. The squaw bread was excellent, however. When she came to take the plates away, she was back in less than 30 seconds with the bill. Jeff went inside to pay it, not wanting to wait for her to return because I'm sure that he recognized that I wanted to get the hell out.
