I decided on the Shack Burger, since that appeared to be the go-to burger, which is described as a "Fresh ground beef stuffed with cheeses and topped with boardwalk fries, more cheese, and The Shack BBQ sauce". Sounds good, let's do it. Upon arrival, things look promising. Presentation is nice, and the burger looks good. After cutting into the burger to see how it's cooked (which is quite good for medium) the cheese stuffed inside oozes out, which is enough to make anyone excited. The cheese, however, only offers a gooey texture and goes totally unnoticed. The burger itself, unfortunately, is barely average. While it's cooked to temperature and adequately seasoned, its over-ground and has an oddly fine, grainy texture. An adequate patty, but by far nothing special. The toppings were among the most disappointing I've reviewed at LVBB. The greens are mostly hearts of romaine, which are crunchy but flavorless - if not earthy. Something you don't want too much of on a burger. The tomato was mealy, possibly past its prime. For a late August review, tomatoes should be the least of the problem. The Shack Burger also comes topped with The Shack BBQ sauce. Be aware that this isn't what you might be expecting from a traditional BBQ sauce. It has a very prominent cumin flavor, and functions as more of an exotic condiment than the BBQ you might be used to. The bun is average and unremarkable. It's thick and bready, and serves solely as a method of transportation for the burger and toppings. On to those fries... "Fresh. Simple. Honest." That's Burger Shack's motto. For a company to claim "freshness, simplicity and honesty" as their core values, the very least they could to is make fresh fries. Instead, these are frozen, pre-packaged "Boardwalk Fries" , which are lightly battered (in my book, any battered fry is a crime against humanity) frozen, and shipped in from New Jersey. They're cut too large, and they're mushy in consistency, which is a terrible combination. At least Burger Shack got the "Simple" part right. During a time in which using fresh, locally sourced ingredients are paramount to any serious restaurant, The Burger Shack seems to forego those principals for more affordable options. If "Fresh, Simple, Honest." is going to be your virtue, everything you serve needs to support that claim without exception. Any burger joint will go through enough fries to justify purchasing and cooking fresh, hand-cut potatoes. I'm not sure how frozen fries qualifies as "fresh". Found this little hidden gem in Whitehall. Cozy, nice atmosphere, owner is super attentive and seems to really care about her customers. My girlfriend ordered a Shabby and I ordered a Bungalow with pickles. Pros: Personalized service A++ - owner is a really nice lady Burger cooking term (rare, medium, well done) not common in small burger joints. I just wanted to say that I had so much fun and good food at the Shack! In addition, the owner is so personable and caring, and goes out of her way to make sure you are satisfied with your meal! Everything was incredible... especially the cheese fries. We went on a Saturday and there are only 28 seats, so you want to make sure to go a little earlier on in the morning.. before the place is packed by 12:15-12:30. The Whoopie Pie was also amazing, and the coffee as well. We went there because they were voted as the top burger from ExpressTimes/Lehigh Valley. I can see now why they were correct. I'm really not sure why reviews for this place aren't higher; my husband and I love eating here and have gotten the food many times when entertaining friends and family. My co-workers even ordered it once and loved it - and they're picky eaters. The people I know compare it to Five Guys without feeling like death when you're done. The meat is fresh, the fries are tasty, and the service is friendly. Preparation time is reasonable, and I've always felt like the eating area is clean. We always recommend this place to anyone looking for a good burger. I love little places like this. Family run, owner takes your order, creative menu items and homemade lemonade to boot. The Burger Shack offers a wide array of burgers - most of them stuffed as was mine stuffed with mushrooms, bacon and cheese - and sandwiches including BBQ pulled pork and grilled chicken wraps. Also offers soup and dessert. Oh yeah - the fries were pretty righteous too. For some reason I opted for the fries with gravy (probably because I've never seen that before on a menu). The burger was 94% lean, perfectly cooked to order, in my case medium rare. The swiss chess was generously draped across the burger and the mushrooms were bursting from being stuffed into the meat, which was nestled inside a freshly baked bun. The fries were thick yet very crunchy and the aforementioned gravy made me want to swim in it. The owner checked on us twice and was delighted that my co-worker and I were happy. Sorry, but this place wasn't even as good as chain restaurants. Burger had little flavor, mozzarella sticks tasted like frozen grocery store versions, milkshake tasted like straight milk, the gyro meat was store bought generic, and grilled chicken was just overrun with cumin. I read about The Burger Shack in a local newspaper a few months back, and have been wanting to go ever since. Tonight was that night! I ordered sweet potato fries and the Homestead (fresh ground beef patty layered with mashed potatoes, boardwalk fries, & gravy). The fries were nice and crisp, much better compared to what my oven at home can do with a sweet potato. I could eat a whole plate of just those. The burger itself was delicious. I tend to try burgers from everywhere I go, but this one takes the cake.The patty itself was packed with flavor and cooked to a perfect medium well. The french fry/gravy combination was very tasty, and reminded me of late night diner food. The potatoes were most definitely the perfect addition to this non-traditional burger. Yum! Who knew mashed potatoes on a burger was the way to this girl's heart? For my burger, fries and a Coke it came to $10. I opted for The Cabana- "Fresh ground beef patty stuffed with jalapeno & pepper jack cheese, topped with more jalapenos & pepper jack cheese". I got cheese fries on the side. Our food was delicious. The burgers were juicy and had a great consistency and texture to them. Good amount of toppings that didn't overwhelm. The bun itself was no write off either. The fries were crispy, although I'd opt for the gravy fries instead of cheese fries next time. That gravy was YUM. Furthermore, my stomach didn't hurt after I finished my entire meal (rare, for me... especially with burgers and fries). I'm pretty sure this is because they didn't wreck the food with grease to make it taste good. It naturally did. The staff that worked there was really friendly, and not in that fake kind of way. Genuine smiles, people that actually cared how customers felt about their business. We'll absolutely be back, multiple times. This really is as good as it gets. Owned and operated by a local family. They really care about how their food looks and taste. The owner even checks up on you to see if you're enjoying your food. She even told me "if you don't like I i want to know so i can make it better". I found that to be impressive. I ordered a homestead burger: Fresh ground beef mixed with classic meatloaf ingredients layered with mashed potatoes, boardwalk fries, & gravy. A little messy but it was one of, if not the best burger ever. To add to my fatness i also ordered a Shack Dog: Homemade chili, cheese spread, boardwalk fries, & onion straws. No idea there were fries under the hotdog itself. Absolutely unparalleled to anything I have tried before. To top it off i threw in fries covered with cheese, bacon, and chili. Fresh and cooked to order lunches are the focus of this small burger joint in Whitehall. I'm a big fan of the falafel wrap sandwich and fatoush salad is a tremendous option to substitute French fries. The burgers are fresh and there are endless options. I recommend calling ahead because everything is made to order. The homemade lemonade is also pretty tasty. The service is always terrific. On our way to hike around the Lehigh Gap on the Appalachian Trail, stopped in because we weren't sure about the falafel offerings. So glad we did, because the owners were SO hospitable, the kind of people who make you feel like you've stepped into their home!! We came away with a burger (delicious), falafel patty on bun (massive and tasty), and a traditional falafel wrap on pita (special off menu) for me. We have a ranking of all the best fries we've eaten around the globe, and these are up there in the top five. To top it off, they gifted us with pierogis, gratis. When we collapsed back in the car after our hike, the leftovers were as good as the first go around, and we washed it down with their fresh squeezed lemonade.
