Precious are the gems that we find in small towns like Sumner. Cold and rainy it was in early January 2021 when we went for coffee at The Buttered Bisquit only to meet Olivia, a lovely lady. We then decided to have The Cowboy and Pork Chili Verde which were absolutely amazing. The corn bread was sweet, warm and buttery like nothing I've had before. The food was garbage at this place and made me feel like I had nothing but cholesterol in my stomach all day. I regret not reading the full review of another individual before I decided to order the eggs Benedict. For a place that's called the buttered biscuit they sure don't live up to their name...dry ass biscuits. I can guarantee these were not at all homemade or at least fresh biscuits. I also don't even think they were toasted all the way, tasted like it was days old and dry. The poached egg was over cooked. It was basically a soft boiled egg on top of a dry biscuit. I make eggs Benedict at home and I was a little surprised at what ended up on the table. Also I asked for cheddar and mozzarella instead of feta cheese. So that difference in cheese might have made the presentation of this dish better than it actually is. My husband and mother in law got the train wreck and the grandpas country fried steak and honestly not impressed. The dishes are definitely $$ prices but at least you get huge portions. And be happy with the huge portions if you can handle a lot of oil/fat/whatever they drench in the food to make it taste like you're a phone call away from a heart attack. Not sure if I just picked the wrong day or what. Went on Mothers Day at 2pm. Restaurant was maybe less than half full, seemed to be dying down & all but 1 table had already received their food by the time we ordered. The usual menu was not available & in place a condensed "Mothers Day Menu" was offered which I understand considering the day. *If* I had known this, I wouldn't have picked this restaurant. Took over 30 mins to get out food, just myself & my daughter. Coffee was mediocre. Lighting was very weird for a breakfast/lunch restaurant. Felt like I was in a Italian restaurant at night or a fine dining place; very low lighting maybe for ambiance (?) but the decor is more than slightly odd. Weird 70's French vibe large patterned wallpaper and wooden cut-out dogs on the wall.... then flamingo print wallpaper in the hallway to restrooms with a small tiki hut thing between restrooms entrances. The actually building is very old brick and would have made for a beautiful interior. Anyways, Sat just at 2pm, ordered by 2:15 and received our 2 items at 2:48. Every table but 1 had left by then so I felt very rushed to eat & leave as they closed at 3. I ordered the "Don't Be Chicken" breakfast . Received the "cornbread"??? Ummm more like cornmeal cake. Again, weirdly dense for a bread but dry also. Imagine the density of bread pudding but dry & made from cornmeal. Not bad to eat but just odd. My summary: good portions although I find it weird that they choose to use a hamburger white gravy vs a typical sausage white gravy but was okay nonetheless. Was told comes with eggs over medium when it actually comes with "Gramma" eggs which appear to be scrambled with idk what & cheese. Was a good meal I didn't find anything about it extraordinary or brag-worthy. My daughter ordered the lemon blueberry loaf French toast with bacon. Bacon was very good. Did not like the lemon blueberry loaf French toast at all.... I took 2 bites & so did my daughter. Just off in texture, & taste. Was a weirdly dense loaf bread, almost like pound cake. I don't know if it needed to be soaked in the egg batter a bit longer, but would not recommend or order again. Same odd weird density as the cornbread and dry. 2 breakfast & 2 beverages (Diet Coke & coffee) for $57. That's a lot in my opinion for breakfast. I don't know if I'll give it another try. The staff was nice & the server/bartender Tom was fun & friendly. 1 thing I was pleasantly impressed with is that there is ample free parking on the side of the restaurant. Nice breakfast spot in the south end. I was told by a few people to check this place out and I finally made the trip to Sumner. First off it's very easy to find, right in the middle of town and there's a few parking lots close by which made it nice. It was crowded when we showed up on a Saturday morning but we were expecting to wait in a long line here. Fortunately they have a pretty good system so the wait wasn't all that bad, maybe 20 mins or so and that was with the line out the door. The atmosphere inside is cool, very PNW homey/cabin-ish style with plenty of booths and chairs for seating. The menu had some really nice comfort food choices which did make it hard to decide. I ended up going with their huge chicken fried steak which had everything you would expect, eggs, biscuits, gravy, the works. Portion sizes are out of control here and the food is very tasty. I really liked their cornbread which has a cream cheese type topping, it was very good and I recommend trying it. Good service and pricing as well. On a trip up to visit my friend Julie, we Yelped brunch places around the area and ended up at The Buttered Biscuit. It's in THE cutest town ever. Like out of a Thomas Kinkade painting, but without all that artificial light. You think a place like The Buttered Biscuit is kidding about biscuits and gravy? Let me tell you. This place is NOT MESSING AROUND. Two biscuits cut in half are placed on a large plate. Each half of the biscuit is at least two inches thick. HALF. HALF A BISCUIT is TWO INCHES THICK. Do you know how much butter is probably in this thing? Paula Deen would be proud. Then comes the gravy portion. I'm not talking about thin, leftover Thanksgiving gravy. I mean gravy that's so thick you'd need a boba straw to sip it, and even then, the chunks of hamburger and sausage would get stuck, because they add that stuff, along with heavy cream, into their gravy. I can't even tell you how rich this is; you'll just have to imagine the fattest, most calorie-heavy thing you've ever eaten in your life.. times 5. The potatoes on the side were merely just decorative for me; compared to the mountain of biscuits and gravy, I had little to no interest in the potatoes, which were thinly sliced and cooked up with bell peppers and onions. Not the best I've had by far, so in my mind they were just stomach-fillers. Why eat these when you can ingest thick, chunky gravy with buttery biscuits? Exactly. Wash all of this down with their sweet tea, and you've pretty much eaten enough calories to sustain a small South American village. But it's okay, because then you won't have to eat for a few days afterwards, and the money you save can go towards a gym membership. read more

The last time I went to The Buttered Biscuit was Summer 2014, though I don't think I uploaded pictures until December. I waited so long to write this review because it broke a little piece of my heart to have to write it. We had a couple of Groupons or Amazon Local deals for The Buttered Biscuit and my boyfriend and I went there by ourselves, brought my mom and nephew once when they were visiting from Michigan, and the boyfriend and I went by ourselves a second time to use the last of the deals. Unfortunately, we were not impressed with any visit and the last one "sealed" our decision to not return. If you've read my previous review for The Buttered Biscuit, you'll know that I was a HUGE fan of the place. Not the greatest décor, but the food FAR made up for the lack in scenery. Sadly, that was no longer the case. The first visit we decided to get something different. Since neither of us had ever had burgers there, we decided to give them a go. The boyfriend wasn't overly impressed but he wasn't as disappointed as I was. My burger was too much "burger" - It was all burger, a little cheese, a slice of bacon, and a bit of bread. It would have been a different story if the burger was GOOD, but it wasn't. It was underseasoned, dry, and just not great quality. By far the best part about that trip was the dessert - Raspberry shortcake. It was like they took their biscuits and mixed them with pancakes to make a batter and then put raspberries and whipped cream on top. It was PRETTY good. The second visit also wasn't horrible, but not great - The cornbread, as usual, was wonderful, but they changed the ingredients in our favorite dish - The "Don't Be A Chicken". Not only was there not as much gravy as there used to be, but they started using frozen potatoes instead of fresh cut ones. It made a HUGE difference in quality, and not for the better. My mom (who had been there before the last time she visited) and nephew also weren't too impressed and didn't care for the frozen potatoes. She said that she wouldn't come back if they kept the food the same. The third visit was what REALLY killed it for us. Not only the food, but what happened afterwards, which I'll talk about in a minute. First the food. Because we weren't impressed with the "Don't Be A Chicken" the time before, we decided again to try something new. (We had asked if they were still using frozen potatoes and they were). I got the chicken and shrimp fettucine with a side salad and the boyfriend got the fish and chips. The salad was DISGUSTING - It shouldn't have been that hard as it was just lettuce, cheese, ham, and some dressing. The ham they put on it must have been super juicy because the salad was swimming in a slimy, gross juice. The chicken and shrimp alfredo wasn't horrible, but it needed some seasoning. C'mon now...A little salt goes a LONNNNNNNNG way. (I was happy to see they removed the vein from the shrimp though). The boyfriends fish and chips weren't bad but they weren't good. They were different from fish and chips that I had before and they were pretty bland too. They only had peach cobbler and some banana dessert available for desserts so we went for the cobbler. Now...I'll admit that I don't like peach cobbler normally anyway but decided to give it a try. This didn't sway my decision. The cobbler was a weird mushy bread consistency and again, had NO flavor. The boyfriend also wasn't impressed. So...If it was just for the food, we might give The Buttered Biscuit another shot, but as we were leaving we noticed the kitchen door was open to the outside (a health violation in itself). We made the mistake of looking in. Not only was the kitchen GROSS - Like dirty - But there was food sitting out, ON THE FLOOR, and flies around the food. I was REALLY glad we didn't get the banana dessert because it was in a bin on the floor and it was obvious it wasn't garbage. I understand that most places we go to don't have as clean of a kitchen as we do at home, but if you're going to have your kitchen be viewable to your customers, make sure it's at least clean. After seeing the state of the kitchen we felt sick to our stomachs - Not because of food poisoning but because we ate food out of that kitchen. We haven't been back since. I hope they clean up their act (literally and figuratively) but I know some people that have been there recently and it doesn't sound like anything has changed. It's too bad. read more

I was extremely disappointed after leaving The Buttered Biscuit. After so many positive reviews, I was sure this would be a great dinner spot close to home. I ordered the New York steak and my boyfriend ordered the meatloaf. First came out the salad. Only bacon and caramelized onions on top. When you got to the bottom of the salad, it was just sitting in a pool of grease and salad dressing. The beacon was undercooked. Meatloaf was a tad sweet (IMO) but still pretty good. My boyfriend liked it enough. I ordered a medium steak, got a medium rare steak. The waitress agreed that it as under cooked and she walked my plate back to the kitchen. In 4 minutes (no idea how it got back to me so quickly) she brought out a medium well steak that was SO tough. I struggled to get through it and the pool of blood at the bottom of my plate was unappetizing (not rested much?). It also tasted of ash and my boyfriend agreed. The mashed potatoes and sautéed veggies were good. The brown gravy had green peppers, which I've never seen before and didn't cared for. We walked out $50 poorer, not including tip, and me still hungry. This has to be more of a breakfast place ... That being said, if you go here your best bet is to order breakfast. read more

I have been a long time customer at the Buttered Biscuit, until yesterday. Needless to say I will not be going back, and I highly recommend you look elsewhere if you want good food, AND good customer service. My boyfriend and I went in for breakfast yesterday for the first time in about 9 months. Our waitress was overworked, and overwhelmed, as they are ALWAYS short staffed. 15 minutes after we sat down we were brought menus and water. My bf asked for coffee. The response, "you want coffee"? Ten minutes later we had our coffee, and our order taken. Another 25 minutes and they bring out the food. Mine looked and tasted fine. My boyfriends on the other hand was completely inedible. He ordered the corned beef hash, and eggs over medium. The entire meal was over well done. We Nicely asked if we could have another order less well done. The waitress scurried off, and soon the owner was at our table with our check. Imagine our surprise when she said "I comped your entire meal once before and I won't do it again" WHAT?!?! I attempted to talk with her. I don't recall ever being comped a meal, in fact we have ALL of our receipts, nor was I asking for anything to be comped, we just wanted edible food. Another 20 minutes and they finally bring another plate. Just as burnt as the first. After an hour and a half of terrible service, and inedible food we decided to leave. I told the owner that I would be happy to pay for my meal, although it was barely touched, however I wouldn't pay for his, as he didn't take one bite of either plate. Apparently the owner herself waited on us the day she claims she comped our meal. Apparently asking if they are short staffed, and having to ask repeatedly for coffee, sugar, cream etc is just to challenging, therefore making us the worst customers of all time. The owner also admitted she told our waitress that we are impossible to make happy, thus our rude service. I have lived in and frequented the small local restaurants in Sumner for 16 years, and I have never been rude, or impossible to make happy. If you want mediocre food, and mediocre service then the Buttered Biscuit is the place for you. If you want good food, and great customer service, check out Dixie's Kitchen, or the Berryland Cafe. Went here for a family breakfast date on a Sunday morning. They get very busy. But the food is very homey tatsting and the portions are huge. It really gives you a vibe of the historic, vintage Sumner which is nice cause its like stepping into another world. I personally think that some stuff are a bit overpriced, but its also well worth cause how big the portuons are. Lastly, the staff here are wonderful! I feel like eating at these types of places is a lot like drinking a 40. You do it on a rare occasion for the whole spectacle, but you kind of enjoy the experience in a hybrid hedonistic/masochistic sense. However, if either became a regular habit, your life could then be objectively considered a hot mess. Cornbread: More like corncake. This is the first time I've ever had cornbread with a crystallized sugar topping. There was also some sort of creamy drippy topping that seemed like a hybrid of butter, cream and sugar. Was totally indulgent, but did nothing for saving room for the main attraction! S.O.S.: Since biscuit was in the name of this restaurant, I decided that I must get a dish with biscuits and gravy. This massive mount did not disappoint! About 5 or 6 large biscuits covered in a ton of creamy gravy with all sorts of meat bits. The sauce was so rich that the thick biscuits were a necessity to balance out the plate. Service: Overall pretty good.Our waitress was really nice to us and wasn't pushy about checking in on us (mostly because they were slammed). My stepdad FORGOT to order my little sister something (because she went to the restroom) and the waitress got her order out in like five minutes and made sure there was nothing immediate she could bring out to her. She's definitely great at providing customer service, I wish I had remembered her name! There were two girls at the front who were seating people that were kind of rude, in my opinion. They were loud and joking around with each other and only time they talked to the customers was to tell them to "move upstairs. like now, please." Decor: Main reason why I deducted a star. I think this place is the older location, but it's kind of dingy. I like the big wooden tables and how there's chalkboards everywhere, but they need a major facelift. The bathrooms are definitely hurting - one of the toilets is cracked, the walls have chipped paint and holes here and there... Just kind of a mess. Food: The best. There's no question when it comes to "can they make a good breakfast?" because HELL YEAH. Last time I went I got the Chicken Little and it was so good that I got it again... Wow. Do *not* come here on a Saturday. I'm used to lunch on weekdays in this place, and have been in for breakfast on the weekend some time ago, and the difference is astonishing. It took around 20 minutes to be seated. Not a big deal. The place was packed. They took my name and placed it on a list, but didn't give me any estimate on how long it might take before we could get a table. We were seated next to the 'play area' for children without being asked if that was okay. At one point I was head-butted in the knee by some random child retrieving a ping pong ball. That was not okay. It is not okay for random children to be crawling under tables. (Not specific ones, either. Really, no children crawling under tables, please.) It took another half hour from the time we were seated before we got to order. At the fifteen minute mark someone brought us drinks. After ordering, it took about an hour before our food arrived. During this whole time, the screaming children didn't help. Once the food did arrive, it was tepid at best. An hour to get undercooked eggs, cold hash-browns, and cold bacon. It's really sad it was such a horrific experience. I used to really like this place. I don't know if they're the victims of their own success and haven't staffed appropriately, or what's going on. I need to first preface this with the statement that the 3 stars was due to a large gluten-free menu and the food we ordered turned out yummy. But...this place is GROSS!!! The only reason we didn't leave is because it was so highly rated on more than one website. The floor was filthy - lots of food and balled up used napkins, the walls, stair rails, tables, syrup - in a creamer server and menus had a grimy film. Even our silverware was dirty! Our waiter, Xavier, was very nice and helpful. He may be a bit new as he didn't know they had a gluten-free menu. (They have a very large gluten-free menu and even offer to alter any menu item if they can!) Other than that, he was good. I had the GF chocolate chip pancakes and my Dad had the Cobb salad...and were very good. It's just sad that the restaurant is so gross...it has so much potential and could be a really great place...the building itself could be redone only cosmetically (#1 would be a DEEP cleaning, paint and new floors!) and it'd be such a great place. This is for sure my new favorite place. I ate so much that I hurt. This places portions are ridiculous. My wife and I aren't petite eaters, but we both left with leftovers. I ate, and ate, and ate but still looked like I didn't even put a dent into my meal. I got the train wreck. Eggs, thick sliced bacon, sausage, country fried steak,sauteed onions, and green peppers, COVERED in SOS gravy, and cheese. WOW! Heart attack here I come, but well worth it. My wife got, cinnamon roll french toast. DUDE! Biggest plate of french toast I've ever seen. Real cinnamon rolls and thick sliced bacon. French toast cover in real cream cheese frosting, and then topped with whipped cream. Oh I forgot, they start the meal with this huge slice (not really I slice more like a brick) of corn bread, topped with sugar and real melted butter, out of this world. The service was awesome. They have great customer service and the food is made with love. The atmosphere is cozy and the menu options are very creative. So here's the deal, everything about this place is just mediocre. There's nothing extravagant about this place. I've visited The Buttered Biscuit about 3 times, and each time there is always something off. When I went this last time, it was a decent visit. The service was faster than normal because my group was literally one of two groups there... Out waitress however forgot to bring a couple essential things, such as our utensils until after the food came and we reminded her, she also was a bit sassy, so that wasn't the best first impression. In terms of the food, again, it's just mediocre. I got the Jenny burrito this time and it was good, but just incredibly greasy. I found this to be a common trait -- the food being way too greasy. So although I enjoyed it and its portion, I felt a bit too gross eating it. The restaurant itself is not an incredibly well maintained dining area. It is not the cleanest you wish, but it is a well-known in the Sumner area, so I do find myself coming here couple times a year with some friends when wanting breakfast. So again, very mediocre, but honestly, they're service is very inconsistent, so your visit may be superb or just the absolute worst. read more

I think this place has potential and will try it again. If all I came in for was the cornbread I would have given five stars. The cornbread with the cream cheese honey butter icing is awesome. Piles and piles of delicious food! Bring a friend and split a plate (just be sure to get extra corn bread don't want to be sharing that!) Gramma eggs are best, scrambled with ham sausage and bacon.... Sos gravy is top notch. Corned beef hash is homemade and delicious. Chicken fried steak is tender and delicious. Service is great! Waitstaff was friendly and prompt. My only downer was the coffee..perhaps it's the blend or the strength they make but I wasn't getting my buzz on. If you find yourself in Sumner, find the Buttered Biscuit, next to the tracks hidden a block behind the shops on the main drag. read more

Not impressed. If the name of your restaurant is the Buttered Biscuit, biscuits should be out of this world, not out of a box. Granted it was busy, but service wasnt great, everyone is sort of trying to manage chaos. Benedict had too much hollandaise it was sort of like slop. It started with the weak flavored coffee, the maple syrup is also weak Tastes like a low grade brand or home made, the food : we both ordered 222+2, French toast, eggs, link sausage, bacon. Sausage was a bit on the underflavored side but lean and the powdered sugar topping on the French Toast was grainy so your bread crunched. $26 for two for breakfast, $4.00 tip. Normal yes, fair yes, I think there are a few shortcuts they shouldn't take and I've pointed them out. I bought a groupon months ago, so it is expired, but they still tell me I must come in M-F 5-8pm only to use it. Pfft! Possibly donating the $10, and today's meal, probably not returning. ive been coming here since I was very little with my sister Billie Jo. I've been back twice since being an adult and it's chan so much. I'm here right now as I write this. when we got here, the lady at the front told us it'd be a 45 minute wait and she took my name and phone number, we went to the shops around the area waiting for the call. it never came. so we came back and noticed people were being seated right away. we went in and asked when it's our turn and she said she called but didn't get an answer. I didn't have any missed calls. She said "well your table is ready, hang on I'll go clear it"... so it's not ready lol she comes back and told us to go upstairs and the lady up here would seat us. We walked up and she said sit where ever. So we sat down and no body came with menus or anything. So we got up and got them ourselves. They eventually came by and we had To them to wipe the table down because it was sticky. The food is good, it just got placed in front of us right now and the food tastes good. It just sucks that we came here for breakfast 2.5 hours ago and are just now getting served but people that showed up after us are already done and out the door. The service just isn't the same as it used to be. I don't believe we were ever called and then had to literally serve ourselves. they didn't even come by to fill coffees, we had to wave down someone every time. We weren't checked on. Just sad. I missed this place But I won't be coming back. read more

We've been here a number of times, and ordered the train wreck, country-fried steaks, eggs benedict and others Yum. The cornbread is different...sweet. The negatives. The service can be slow and a bit inattentive. Food can range from amazing to cold and improperly cooked (poached egg was hard boiled) to AMAZING. Definitely worth a visit. read more
