I never liked Wonton Time and this "The Congee" joint is no better. $5.50 for a bowl of $.25 greasy oily noodles in a very prosaic, ie, bland, chicken stock with 4 overcooked wontons each containing 1 large shrimp apparently fed growth hornomes? One must season the entire mess with vinegar, hot chili oil and mad amounts of white pepper just to induce any sense of flavor out of this bowl. And yes, for $5.50, you get 1 stalk of Chinese broccoli. Ugh!!! But what about the namesake? Them bowls of steamy congee? Again, I don't get it. $5 for a bowl of boiled rice soaked with MSG, speckled with a few slices of scallions and shards of low quality beef? C'mon. These are the 2 dishes that drew the hoards of Cantonese peeps in on the opening weekend? Don't believe this place is the lowest of all common denominators in the world of SGV noodle shops? The beef balls and fish balls, used in a third of all menu items, are straight from frozen packs, akin to anything you can buy from Ranch 99. The only thing of interest is the tofu-life silky "fish paste in Special Sauce". And that's at a mind boggling $5.50 for 8 small squares of fish protein doushed in, again, an MSG-laden sauce. It's special, but not $.70 per piece special. I hope Steven(?) and Amy(?), the owners, well. Unfortunately, you won't find me battling this crowd ever again. read more

A really small Mom and Pop shop with great food and affordable prices! To my surprise, I actually like this place a lot. You won't get amazing service here, but it's really not that bad! The prices are very cheap considering how good their food was. Their porridge was good and their pan fried noodle rolls were lacking a little bit of flavor but I think I would've been better off with the beef stew noodle rolls instead. Regardless, I'd still order it and definitely come back here. Perfect for a quick bite or to order to go. Their portions are very very generous. No complaints here :) read more

Hello my Yelpies, Came here for the first time since I've drove by this place many times and thought why not give it a try. Parking is very convenient since they are located right inside the plaza of yogurt land, there is usually always space so don't need to worry too much about finding a spot. The place is actually very tiny, probably fit around 20-25 people. It seems like a home own restaurant, their menu is pretty simple and short which was actually a lot better since there isn't much choice. I order the Beef Noodle Soup and my friend order the Beef & Fish balls noodle soup. Food came out within 5 minutes but I was actually a little disappointed with mine. The beef was very chewy and hard to swallow that I had to give it all to my friend because I just can't eat it. The soup base was good, taste very healthy and it was well seasoned but I personally don't like those super thin noodles so that was a little disappointed for me. The reason I gave it a 2 stars is that since I order beef noodle soup, I expect to have decent quality beef and not something that I don't even have the energy to chew on, the beef is the main course of this dish and I was really looking forward to something that is tender and tasty. As for my friend he really enjoyed the beef and fish balls, I tried one each and they are definitely a lot better than the beef. Our bill came out to $15 exactly, I guess you do get what you pay for. I was a little disappointed that they didn't have the gyoza anymore because I was actually really looking forward to eating that but since they didn't have it today I had no choice. Their service was pretty average, everyone was working hard and trying their best to fulfill all of their customers stomach. Overall, 4 stars for service, 2 stars for food and drinks, 3 stars for environment and decoration and 4 stars for cleanliness. This is the place where I get my porridge fix and my wonton noodle fix. They open late and it has a great variety of Hong Kong foods that aren't entirely too "unhealthy"! Their wontons here is what everyone comes here for. I know that their porridge here is actually really good as well. If you're feeling light and not a lot of meat, I would recommend this place. The service here is so-so, as it is the same for many other restaurants. You eat, you pay, you leave. No personal interactions or anything. The restroom DOES have a distinct smell to it... so I'm going to suggest using the restroom before coming here because it is really dirty. read more

The shop is pretty small. But there's plenty of 4 seat tables. So I would say it's not to hard to get a table for 6. The service is quick. There's plenty of parking in back. You can enter the shop from the back or front. I tried the wonton soup with shrimp wonton and the house fish balls. Both are larger than your typical wonton dumpling and fish ball. I had a feeling that a crazy sore throat was coming so I decided to grab some congee to do any last minute prevention of a sore throat. Although this place is called "The Congee" there was nothing too special about it. You can probably order it at any Chinese restaurant and it tastes all the same. There's probably a little less msg here. Did it do any damage control for my sore throat? I'm not sure, but I did burn my tongue because I was impatient and wanted to down my congee. My boyfriend got the wonton and beef noodle soup. He was gracious enough to give me one of his 3 wontons and it was pretty good. Authentic shrimp wonton noodle soup! The wontons were gigantic -- there was a whole shrimp inside (so generous with the filling). Wontons tasted really amazing, such fresh and good quality ingredients. Try their chili sauce with it, very addicting. I normally go to the other restaurants/stores in this plaza (Kang Kang, Phoenix, Yogurtland, Energy, Crepe Luv) and NEVER give this restaurant a second glance. But...boyfriend was really craving their noodle soup around 9pm on a Saturday evening so I finally decided to try it (he didn't even order it when we got here!) FOOD: I'd say, not bad. I ordered the Shrimp Wonton Egg Noodle Soup. I'm a little in between loving and not so loving this dish. Yes, the shrimp wontons were MUCH bigger than normal shrimp wontons when you go to other restaurants, but there were only 4! Boyfriend insists that if he didn't eat one of my 4 wontons, I wouldn't be complaining about not having enough. I don't think so. Also, there was too much egg noodle. IMHO, if they had less noodles and put at least 1 or 2 more wontons, this would be a perfect dish. The wontons itself were actually delicious (and I generally don't care for wontons). Boyfriend ordered Beef Stew Lo Mein (dry beef stew on egg noodles and a bowl of soup on the side). This was pretty good too, but I also thought they put too much egg noodles and not enough beef. SERVICE: The food took a little longer to get to us than I though it would, especially since there weren't too many tables. BUT, It wasn't long for me to start complaining. It makes me feel like they made everything fresh. No complaints with the waitresses as they seemed friendly. AMBIENCE: Small restaurant and the kitchen is in plain view (which I thought was kind of weird since you can clearly watch the kitchen staff wash all the bowls, plates, etc.) haha. Probably not a place for a romantic date. :P PARKING: I never really liked this parking lot because it COULD get packed especially during lunch or dinner hours...and Chinese people usually lose all sense of driving etiquette in crowded lots (please don't judge me!!...I am Chinese too!!) Love this place because of the home style feel. All the dishes here reminds me of eating in Hong Kong. It literally tastes the exact same!! I love getting the wonton noodle soup because the give you super giant wontons! Biggest wontons I've ever seen! And their house chili oil is delicious too! Their to go food is packaged very well and thoughtfully. They even have a little piece of cardboard on the bottom of your bag so your food doesn't tip over! I was thinking about 3 stars but I will just give it to them lol Ordered Preserved Eggs & Pork Congee and an appetizer, spicy salted wings The congee was filled with meat and chopped eggs which was a plus because a lot of places tend to be stingy on the preserved eggs. The portion was good for 2. The congee itself tasted ok...my mom's homemade taste much much better =) I am surprised that the wings were very tasty. No wonder there is a saying "Never judge a book by its cover." When the dish came out I thought to myself..."probably not good" but I was wrong. It looked dry but turned out the inside was very juicy and the outside was crispy. Right amount of salt and not oily...the wings itself weren't spicy tho. Herbal tea was pretty good =) no sour after taste and not too sweet. Service was pretty good...quick and friendly. Food took a little while to come to the table tho... IMO, this place is a little on the pricey side...my total came out to be $18.20 ($3 was tip) Restroom avail. Came here because the gf wasn't feeling well and wanted some good congee. They have some really cheap food such as wonton noodles, lo-mein, congee, and more. The congee we got wasn't too salty like most other places and they gave a big portion for less than $6. I also got wonton noodles and it was a pretty big portion and it was good. The waiter who was helping us was helpful and friendly. He refilled our water without asking us, so at least there is some decent service here, which you normally won't find at a cheap Chinese restaurant. Parking isn't an issue as its in a big plaza, but can be hard to find parking if you come during peak hours like dinner time. It would be nice if they accepted credit card since this place only accepts cash at the moment. read more

Very simple mom and pop but serves genuine chinese comfort food. My husband is very picky with his congee (porridge) and wonton noodle for their textures and has a taste bud like no other and this is one of his favorite place. I'm ok with congee but this place has absolutely the best abalone (not the real expensive ones of course) with chicken. Taste very close to my husbands homemade ones. Delicious especially when I am sick. Many places has a difficult time watching the texture of the noodles as it gets soggy quick but this place has the crisp texture (what is supposed to be). I always get the rice noodles though with beef/beef tendon and this is a hit and miss. Most days though their beef is soft and tender. Once in a blue moon it would be try. As long as most of the time its good, is good enough for me. Parking: Horrible during prime time as its in a plaza shared with many other stores. (minus-1/2 star) Service/Cleanliness: Service is good as this place is a very small place and they really cant miss you. Generally clean, bathroom not so much. SHADY BUSINESS ALERT! When my friend and I opted to pay the bill, we found that they charged us more for each dish then they told us that they included the tax in each item already and that's why the end amount doesn't have tax in it. Ok fine. So I used my card to pay, then they told me that my card was declined for whatever reason then I told them that I have money in my account and there's no reason for it to be declined. Then they told us that they cannot do it again so I had to drive to the nearest bank and withdraw $20 . I do that. Then the next night when I checked my bank account again, the card transaction actually WENT THROUGH. Which means they lied to us. While the wontons were oversized, this was definitely another case of having quantity over quality. Other than the broth, I guess the wonton noodle soup was passable. Probably the food with the most amount of MSG were the fried chicken wings. Yeah, they're crispy and savory, but the trade-off is that you end up getting really thirsty. The service? Walked in 2 of my family members and ordered a wonton noodle soup with beef brisket to go. Came back and got my noodle, went to next door to kang kang food court. Opened my noodle at kang kang food court to make sure I got right item since the lady at the register looks confused when I picked up my food. I got the pork congee with the ancient egg thing - and all for $6.95 - WTF! GIVE ME TWO. I ate it and it was SO good (after I added some soy sauce). I was in SOUP HEAVEN. I felt like my cold/flu was being pushed down with each spoonful of soup. I needed this soup. I mean, I still haven't healed, but this helped SO freaking much. The wonton soup was also delicious. OMG! For a while I haven't come back to this Restaurant for their well known hand made fish ball. I am disappointed to say the fish balls are not the same as before. The texture is very different, almost like tofu consistency. The flavor is also lacking. Sad to say I won't be back. read more

Nothing really special about this joint. It was late and I couldn't decide of what place to go to in San Gabriel Valley. Service was fast as food was served quick. I had heard from a friend that their liver congee is delicious but I wasn't impressed. To my surprise, I actually preferred the original congee with preserved egg and shredded pork. Pan fried rolls were okay but not as flavorful as it could be. It tasted pretty bland especially when you got to the interior of the rice rolls. The lo mein with shrimp wonton was a little better than the rest. It was very minimalist with dry noodles and XO sauce on the side for you to stir with. Stopped here for lunch. The place is small with only about 10 tables available for seating. However, do not be mistaken by the size of the place or the appearance when you first walk in. They offer a lot of food at very reasonable prices. We ordered the shrimp wonton & noodle soup and fish congee. The fish was fresh and cooked properly and I am not a fan of congee. But the star was definitely the shrimp wonton...these are slightly bigger than a golf ball with about 3 shrimp in each wonton itself. The dish comes with 4 wontons, so that is like 12 shrimp alone. The noodles are cooked perfectly, not sure if they make on premise, but really nice texture with a little bite/chew. The broth is light and flavorful. Definitely cannot rave enough about this awesome place and to know that they have a location in another part of town is great. Im in LOVE with congee and grew up eating it for breakfast lunch and dinner and even when I was sick. It was always my go to meal when idkkkkk what to eat and this happened a few nights ago so I hit this spot up. They have one of the best preserved egg & pork Congees I've ever had. This is my first time eating here...I ordered the shrimp-egg noodles with octopus balls. The flavor of the food took me by surprise. When I bit into the octopus ball, it was full of flavor!
