I'm feeling conflicted about my opinion on this establishment so I'll do my best to explain why:
I'd like to think that I eat primarily healthy; I don't like to eat out too often during the work week, especially when my options are as limited as there are in my industrial-esque work area. I am choosy about where I order from, as I realize that not every establishment is properly vegetarian-friendly.
The whole feel of this place appears to be geared towards freshness and a clean meal. Simple sandwiches (ALL served with sprouts), wraps, smoothies and low-fat frozen yogurt.
I've had a 1/2 sandwich & soup combo once, it was fine. The tortilla soup is good, and vegetarian from what they say. No chicken stock or anything. I've stuck with salads though, customizing them by basically requesting every vegetable available. Not hard. I call ahead to place my order every time and ask that the order be repeated back, just to be thorough, safe. My order has been correct maybe 50% of the time. I've let it go. The customer service is nice enough, never an argument or an objection, never a bad attitude. Perhaps a slight language barrier... Could be that whoever is taking my order isn't paying their full attention or writing everything down.
Today's experience was the last of my patience with Cultured Taste. I went through my typical routine of ordering for pick up - Have the order repeated back to me. "Kat, we know you! We'll have your special salad, see you soon." It was the busiest I had ever seen it in here and I had to wait for 20 minutes of my 30 minute break for my salad to be made and handed to me. This annoyed me, but they were busy and working hard, etc.
In this time, I saw some disturbing ass shit. The counter where the food is prepared is clearly exposed, right behind the register. There was a man making a roast beef sandwich and I cannot express how nauseating this process was to watch. He placed mound of roast beef (by that I mean that he didn't separate the thin slices) on a roll and observed how the juices from the deli meat have tampered with the quality of the bread... He picks up the block of processed meat and forcefully squeezes the juices from it. He then used three or more paper towels to heavily press the smegma out of the roast beef. This visual alone was enough to completely change my view on the quality of the products, culinary methods, sanitary safety and overall professionalism of this establishment.
My salad is assembled out of my sight but I could see through the clear plastic box that this was just your generic Garden Salad - Basically lettuce, tomato, their shtick sprouts, etc. None of the additions that I asked for, that they claimed to "know". I asked the cashier passively, hoping that she would notice the absence of substance in my salad, "So, that's EVERYTHING? EVERYTHING is there on my salad, all of the add ons?" She confirmed. I could CLEARLY see that it wasn't but I (literally) didn't have time to argue and the 1% of doubt in me hoped that it was just... underneath the rest.
I was 110% correct in my observation that my salad was the basic. I let that go UNTIL I opened the box to discover the appalling lack of quality of the produce. The spinach was literally black on the edges, shriveled, wilted and discoloured. I couldn't believe that they would even serve this. The tomatoes were pale, unripe and had course, brown specks as if they hadn't been washed. The (ranch) dressing smelled and tasted like aged, spoiled cheddar cheese. I was utterly fed up at this point.
I called and asked for my money to be refunded, with the last 5 minutes of my break. Again, I'd like to remind you how nice they are here, so it's difficult to write this review, let alone communicate that I am disgusted with what I was served. She dodged my request and promised me store credit. After a few hours of reflecting on my experience, the principle of the situation has prevailed and I will be going after work to claim my $7.07 back, not to return for any more service or frightening products from the Cultured Taste. read more
