Used the restroom came back, still no one at the front and there were more patrons standing in the lobby by what looks like a hostess stand looking around cluelessly. There's no one to greet you, no menus available at the front. I left. I don't have time for that and I shouldn't have to hunt around a restaurant and interrupt servers while they're helping people that are already seated to get any sort of service. In a crowd I recently overheard the statement, "There's no good breakfast in Reno." What the what? If there's a well-represented genre of food in The Biggest Little City, it's breakfast and brunch. Maybe they just don't get out much. With that in mind I happened upon a place that's been around long enough to have had three separate identities, yet they've all served some form of traditional American grub. The Cup Cafe is doing a respectable job breaking fasts with the best of 'em. My crew headed in late on a Sunday morning, so the 45 minute wait seemed about right. However, we did not have to wait long for food, so the delay is likely due to folks enjoying a fourth cup of coffee. The quality of this brew is worth savoring and our mugs were refilled with frequency, something that is never lost on me. Keep my coffee full and I flip on a dime from Grumpy Gus to Mr. Sunshine. My wife decided on a carb splurge with country style French toast; thick triangles of hearty bread rolled in oats, almonds, and pecans, egg-wash-fried in the traditional style and topped with blueberry compote ($9.59). She went all-in, adding two eggs--over-medium--and a couple strips of cherrywood-smoked bacon for $3.99. Despite all the sweet goo the toast wasn't soggy or limp, and the bacon was thick-cut and nicely crisp. She chose well. My most predictable breakfast buddy went with a traditional Eggs Benedict, featuring a grilled English muffin topped with two poached jumbo eggs, plenty of shaved honey ham, and what I have to say was a perfect Hollandaise sauce ($11.59). I make the stuff at home and this was exactly as it should be; light, lemony, delicious. It was pretty much perfect paired with a pile of nicely browned home-fried potatoes. Speaking of classics, my wife's friend ordered a platter of country biscuits and gravy that was so big it should have its own ZIP code ($11.99). Two seriously tall, fresh-baked buttermilk biscuits were split and smothered in country gravy, served with a couple eggs, home fries, and a pair of the fattest breakfast sausage links I've ever seen. The black pepper gravy was really good--not gluey or too thin--making me wish I'd ordered differently. Speaking of, I chose lunch fare with a pastrami cheddar burger, a half-pound patty of ground chuck Angus beef topped with pastrami, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, dill pickle chips, and sauce on a better-than-average pillowy, grilled bun ($10.99). It looked beautiful on the plate, served with a kosher dill pickle spear and breaded onion rings for an extra $1.99. The rings were golden & crispy, but though the burger was OK it just wasn't quite up to par with the breakfasts. The patty was cooked to a dried-out medium well. The pastrami was thin shaved and tasty, but there wasn't much of it. The lettuce was limp--maybe having sat too long on the hot meat--the tomato was mushy, and the cheese was only partly melted. The sauce--seemingly a blend of mustard and mayo--was actually one of the best things about the sandwich. It wasn't bad, but I wouldn't order it again. I've had similar experiences, so I think I'll stick with breakfast dishes when dining at a place that is known for them. I still can't believe I didn't try the country fried steak. A tale of two visits: I first tried The Cup Cafe a couple of months ago with my pal Dirty Wilson to fuel up for a day of snowboarding at Mt. Rose. I got one of the Eggs Benedict, which was fantastic. The hollandaise sauce, rather than being like glue, was light with a hint of lemon. Service was on point. Great experience. Cue to yesterday. I'm with the Penguin and we get seated immediately. The problem was that rather than being seated to the left of the restaurant, we were brought around to the right and seated at a booth in front of the kitchen. Hearing anything that the Penguin had to say was a battle. It sounded like somebody had put R2D2 into a dryer. Service was a bit cold. I ordered bacon, eggs and hash browns. Decent enough, but not inspired. My serving of sourdough toast was also less-than-generous. Penguin, on the other hand, ordered a BLT, which was bursting with layers of turkey and ham. Cute place, I'm not a frequent patron of the ma n pa diners but my colleagues chose Kimmie's. My reasons for avoiding said diners came to light when my garden Benedict came......soggy, barely toasted English muffins, one Benedict missing spinach, over poached eggs and undercooked hash browns. I suppose for some (seniors) this type of fair is appreciated or maybe I'm just jaded. Maybe I'm asking too much but I appreciate the simple details in a dish that are applied or in this case......missing. I would've not been proud of that dish if I served it but I was more complexed as to why our server didn't ask if all was ok with my meal which 85% of it was clearly still on the plate. It's the lack of concern for a customers satisfaction by an employee that would and should have Miss Kimmie concerned. I doubt if I will go back.... on my own accord that is. read more

I was looking for a brunch spot and after perusing Yelp I decided on this spot. I came at about 9:30 am (ish) on a Sunday. The place was busy but they found me a table quickly. I ordered an Arnold Palmer. Much to my surprise they make their own. It's the first time I've had one not out of a can. It was very delicious. The tea wasn't overly sweet and the lemonade wasn't too sour. I ordered the Southwestern Scramble with sourdough toast and hash browns. Wow, so good!! The pico on top tasted very fresh. The jalapeños inside the scramble were without seeds so I added hot sauce for an extra bite. The toast came out buttered which I loved. I'm not sure why more places don't do that. Normally the bread comes out borderline cold and the butter doesn't melt. My only critique is the hash browns could have been a little crisper. They were charred but still soft overall on the inside (I like mine super crispy though). Everything that I saw everyone else around me order looked just as good. So this place has recently changed it's name. It used to be called Kimmie's. It's still all the same people, same food. Just a different name. As far as a diner style breakfast this place is on point. Always delicious, and they are consistent. I really appreciate when a restaurant has consistency. I had the standard 2 eggs, bacon and has browns. Amazing. A lot of times you go to a restaurant for breakfast and for whatever reason they don't seem to get the hash browns right. My wife and I wanted to try something a little different then our normal breakfast place. We were immediately greeted with a mother and toddler boy, a little odd but okay. We realized when we sat down this establishment was Christian based and conservative... I ordered the bacon and avocado egg Benedict, my wife ordered the croissant turkey melt, what she received was a Ortega turkey melt on sourdough bread. When we expressed to our waitress it wasn't what we ordered... she said, that's what you ordered?" I said then why did you give us a choice of turkey or honey ham? She said, I will change it for you- while I myself got to eat alone, while my wife sat there waiting for the correct breakfast. Needless to say they took their time to bring her the correct item. But not the side potato salad as they thought she should of eaten it off the wrong plate. When actually receiving the potato salad, it was 3rd the size of the first one my wife didn't eat. My eggs Benedict was lukewarm, and the home fries were even colder then the Benedict. The hollandaise sauce tasted like butter, with a hint of lemon. My wife's correct sandwich wasn't even a melt as she peeled off a Clump of multiple cheese slices. The plate was all oily and it was dirty. This was one of the few places open near the airport at 6am. Classic diner that makes you feel like a regular even when you're not. Greeted with coffee and a smile. The omelette, hash browns and toast were just right and larger portions which was great. Gigi was a solid waitress! Overall nice place! My boyfriend and I have gone here for morning breakfast on our days off and we were impressed enough to bring our entire family there... twice! The staff is friendly, the decor is very pleasing and the breakfast is AMAZING! This review is for the other day! I came around 11am and it was packed. The wait wasn't very long about 20 minutes. It seems like they get people in and out very quickly. The service is very efficient. We sat and got our drinks ordered right away. Shortly after, the server got our food orders. I was tied between the traditional eggs Benedict and the Irish eggs Benedict. I ended up getting the traditional which came out within minutes of ordering! I was amazed. The menu says "tangy" hollandaise sauce and they didn't exaggerate. It's definitely very tangy. I can't quite place my finger on it....could possibly be a citrus zest or something. Stay away. Tried to call their number to see if we had to make reservations. Their phone went straight to voice mail, six times and the voice mail wasn't set up. Drove there as it was close to where we had to go. Walked in and the receptionist asked if we had a reservation.. informed her that we had called a bunch of times but no answer. She said, "well it is the weekend..." she said it would take a while to get a table since we didn't have a reservation and she could take our number and call us when there was a table. Maybe if she had answered the phone when I called we would have had reservations. I'm all for helping local businesses, especially right now but damn.
