Great restaurant with lots of history. Nice location in Arcadia, just a few miles from the Santa Anita Race track. Valet parking is available. The ambiance is nice and quiet with great decor to go along with the name. Items ordered: filet mignon sandwhich with sweet potato fries and the dessert Trio! I was here for an employee team bonding lunch. The restaurant has plenty of seating available and the staff is very attentive. Our meals were pre ordered, so our food was out promptly. I would like to say the complimentary garlic bread was amazing. Nice and crispy with just the right amount of butter to give it a delicious taste. My main entre was the filet mignon sandwich served with green beans and a side of sweet potato fries. It was good but not good enough to brag about it. I was actually expecting a real sandwhich, but instead I got a piece of crispy bread with the meat served on top. My only complaint were my cold sweet potato fries.They were probably sitting out for a while. We then ordered the dessert trio (cheesecake, butter bread, and tiramisu) I think. I would like to say, the cheesecake was extraordinary. So Creamy with a strawberry drizzle coming down the sides. I would probably come back for that again. Very disappointing. Given that the place was crowded for holiday dinners and parties I expected service to be slow, and it was. But the real disappointment was the Rib Eye. At this price point you should expect an exceptional steak cooked to perfection. I understand this is a fatty cut but this was excessive and although requested as medium rare, was basically raw. The server was surprised that I was disappointed, seemed almost on the brink of arguing with me before taking it back. It did come back better, well after the others in my party were done but no apology and no offer to take a few $ off. Totally unacceptable for a restaurant of this caliber. The food here is quite yummy. But as much as I love the tuna tartar and wontons, the steak, the cheesy bread, or the chilean sea bass, there are other things about this place that really stick in your mind about your dining experience. The patrons that frequent this place are usually an older crowd. Some of them get really drunk and loud at the bar. And when they bring in the jazzy singer with her microphone and amp, you'll want to shoot out your ears if you're in the same room bc it's so loud. She's a good singer, it's just way too loud for an intimate scene. What makes me want to skip this place and eat at any other steak house is the wait staff. Some of them think that because you're a regular, that means they can interrupt you every 10 minutes to chatter on about things and you won't care. Wrong. If I have to hear about Barb's horses or her problems understanding the chef when he speaks one more time, I'll seriously get up and leave. Unfortunately, some of the friendlier types are exactly the same here. If you're looking for good comfort food, this is your place. I'm not sure it is priced accurately, though. I'd say it's on the high side for what you're actually getting, to be honest. Additionally, you really don't get any sort of privacy to just eat and have a good conversation with people at your table and that's why i rated it lower. And it was a perfect balance because my boyfriend wanted a steak or something meaty. The ambiance... we liked the red vinyl booths and the woody architecture. Got the French Cut Rib-eye (aka bone in rib-eye)($45). Was flavorful and juicy. Came with side of potatoes and broccoli. Also got the creamed corn, which was a little mushy and too creamy. I can't say I'm proud that it had to take us being quarantined to finally get us to order some take out but oh am I glad we did! We ordered the dinner for two bacon wrapped filet mignon which comes with a house salad, baked potato, veggies, dessert AND a bottle of wine all for $80. Such a great deal. I took my wife here for a surprise "just because" dinner. We were not disappointed, at all. The service was outstanding and the food was great. My wife had a special which included a filet wrapped asparagus starter, a bacon-wrapped filet main course, and a cheesecake dessert. I got the rib-eye and had a few of their specialty drinks (not to mention the apple pie a la mode). The barrel aged old fashioned and the Manhattans were great. Our steaks were perfectly cooked and the beef was high quality. My only complaint is that I thought the rib-eye could have had a bit more seasoning, but that may just be my taste. I strongly suggest getting an order of the sauteed mushrooms to go with your steak. They are well done and a perfect pairing. To finish, the apple pie and ice cream was absolutely without fault. We went for restaurant week. We had the crab cake which had a lot of crab meat. Brucetta was better though , refreshing after the free garlic cheesy bread. Expect these things: If you're a regular they will pay attention to you ; if not prepare to wave for attention. If you order food, it will come out at best warm to cold. You will then have to have them do something about it which will be to reheat your order. If that's steak (their supposed specialty) it will come back tough and inedible. If you express dissatisfaction with food, they will shut you down. If you sit at the bar on a busy night one or more of the bartenders will disappear and they will get behind. I was told They were out of Edamame salad after 20mins I placed my order, so I chose Ahi Tuna with Caesar Salad, it was sub par and ended up being "comped" even though I did not mention it. 2. I went for the dry aged prime rib eye. I ended up ordering the Bone in KC fillet. there is no more prime dry aged beef available on the menu. The bone in fillet was perfectly cooked, but it had a decent amount of gristle and was not as tender or flavorful as it could have been. 3. French fires were tasted like frozen food. Derby's was my No.1 restaurant in my neighborhood, whenever I want to celebrate for something special, it was alway the first place I could think about, but after tonight I think I will take a break from going there. read more

My wife, daughter, and I had dinner at The Derby last night. I made reservations on OpenTable, which went smoothly. An hour later, the restaurant called me to confirm the reservation. I told the lady who called that we were celebrating my wedding anniversary, which I also noted on OpenTable when I made the reservation. She said that the special occasion was duly noted. We showed up at the restaurant and we were really impressed. The setting is very unique. The building was built in 1922 and the restaurant has been open since 1938! The interior was tastefully adorned with Christmas decorations and all things related to horse racing. The food was excellent. The ribeye was flavorful and cooked just as I ordered, the pasta and salad were delicious. For dessert we ordered the baked alaska -- a visual delight because they set it on fire table side right before serving. Dinner came and went. I tipped the server a little over 20%. She was very friendly, informative, and attentive. So why just three stars? Well, the restaurant didn't do anything to help me out with the special occasion -- our wedding anniversary! Not a single flower, no card, no "happy anniversary" written in chocolate syrup on the dessert plate. I wasn't expecting anything free, but all the other restaurants that we frequent for special occasions (e.g. Roy's, Fleming's, Parkway Grill) all do something! The dinner was to be a surprise anniversary dinner because I was confined to the hospital during our real anniversary date in December. It ended up being just a regular dinner.
