Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday. The restaurant itself is cool - there's a lot of history to the establishment. It looks and feels like an old school steakhouse. Our table shared the shrimp cocktail ($18). You can choose how you want your shrimp prepared - grilled or chilled. We had them chilled. Nothing spectacular about this appetizer, but it was a solid shrimp cocktail. For my main course, I chose the Derby Delight ($35). This is a 6oz sliced filet mignon served "chateaubriand style," which simply means it is drizzled with Béarnaise sauce. It sits atop of thinly sliced French fried onions + potatoes and served with green beans. For my side, I chose the based potato with all the fixings. My steak was tender and although I didn't love the Béarnaise sauce, I didn't hate it either. For flavor, the steak depended on the sauce. The Derby is the type of restaurant you'd take your parents if they were in town. It's a little stuffy for my taste. read more

This was our first time here and we went in to celebrate my father's birthday. We ran a little late due to traffic but the hostesses were already so kind in holding our reservations. When seated, space felt a bit dark and hard to read the menu, but I understand it's for ambiance. Server Martha was incredibly kind and accommodating with our questions. She also ordered us a complimentary Baked Alaska in addition to our original dessert orders. The family ordered the Centennial three course meal; every filet mignon, rib eye and prime rib were cooked well. Personal opinion that the prime rib was fairly plain. I know that it was so juicy and quality meat that speaks for itself, and it was really good, but I'd prefer it to have more seasoning. The rest of my party thoroughly enjoyed their entrees and devoured it. However, everyone agrees that the green beans included in each entree were rather bland... Slight issue that one staff member was quickly walking around filling up glasses of water but had a heavy hand and over poured and spilled all over the table. Luckily it didn't get anyone wet and already towards the end of of the dinner as we were waiting for the bill. Would definitely come back for special occasions. read more

Went there on a weekend dinner. The decoration was derby themed. They had lots of horse photos. The inside is kind of divided into different rooms. I would say it's a little fancier than casual. A lot of people were celebrating something(ie birthdays) and were dressed nicely(like not just jeans and sneakers). The complimentary bread is amazing. It's cheesy garlic bread and butter/oil seems to drip from it. It was sooo good. So buttery cheesy and garlicky. But I probably wouldn't eat more than one or hour arteries might clog... Then we got the appetizer sampler which came with a bunch of different things including cocktail shrimp, filet, Cajun shrimp. I like it because you got to taste a little bit of everything from vegetables to surf to land. But it is quite filling. Then we got our main dish. Big steak. I'm not a huge meat eater so I can't say much about it...but I thought it was seasoned well. Came with horseradish. We went to The Derby for Christmas Eve 2023 dinner, and that was a great decision. The service was impeccable, and overall the staff and clientele were pleasant. I've gone to older steak houses where customers were tacky (loud, demanding, and take up too much space). At The Derby, the clientele was mature and polite, with a couple of exceptions for customers complaining about seating or service they deemed slow. However, our outdoor seating was perfect -- the holiday decor extended to the outdoor tent, heating was adequate, the volume was reasonable, and service was quick and attentive. We ordered a shrimp cocktail (fresh and absolutely perfect), a dinner salad to split, and two filet mignons wrapped in bacon with baked potatoes. I got full on the scrumptious shrimp and half a salad, but took the steak home, where it was still delicious after oven reheating. Sadly, the baked Alaska is not available for holiday dinners. We ordered a toffee bread pudding that was one of the best desserts I've ever had. We also took a chocolate mousse cake to enjoy the next day. My only regret is that I hadn't tried The Derby sooner, but I'll be back for the baked Alaska and many more special occasions. I appreciate them so much for a lovely experience and top quality -- so hard to find these days. One word of caution: the ladies' room has only two stalls, so try to plan for that. I highly recommend outdoor seating, since it gets very tight indoors. read more

I wish I could give more stars! I have never had a bad experience at The Derby and I've had the pleasure of dining here for many years, thanks to my wonderful father for exposing me to really great historic places like this at a young age. The food is always superb. It's known for their steaks but I'm vegetarian and very much enjoy their pasta and salad selections. (The only thing I wish they would bring back was a 7 layer quinoa dish with an amazing spicy dipping sauce) Service is always excellent and professional. We've had Barbara as our server on several occasions and she is a true gem. She even does Christmas earrings for the ladies to pick out around the holidays! And most recently we had Johnny as our server and he couldn't have been more pleasant and accommodating. Plus he did a marvelous job serving our Baked Alaska! I highly recommend asking about that dessert for birthday celebrations, it's such a lovely perk I hope they never stop doing. Also you might want to make reservations if you're planning to go, even on a week night, because the place really fills up fast. However if you do end up in the waiting area for a bit, be sure and check out all the fabulous horse memorabilia in the cases. My husband experienced a severe stroke the week before and I wanted to treat my kids to a lovely dinner where we could hopefully relax and enjoy a good meal and maybe laugh a bit. Our first time dining at the Derby I have to say my husband and I as well as my Father in law were very impressed!!! Our server was Bobby , he went over the menu and gave us excellent suggestions. We were seated by the fireplace , ambiance was excellent and the food was delicious. I also noticed the food was very fresh and served hot. My husband had the ribeye and my father in law and I had the prime rib . Bobby even honored my father in law 95 years old and a World War ll --Purple Heart veteran with a tasty dessert in honor of his service to our country !!!
