I bought a living social deal for this show and was excited to use it, made a reservation, and then got completely swamped with work unexpectedly the day of the show and needed to change my reservation to a different day. Even though this was the morning of the show, I was told my tickets couldn't be changed unless I wanted to pay a $40 change fee, which is RIDICULOUS. I feel like I wasted so much money on this place, between the living social cost, then the added cost they charged me to make a reservation ($25) - I wasn't willing to pay another $40, so I never got to use my tickets and had to miss the show. I can't say whether or not the show was entertaining but I would never buy a ticket again after all the hassle and terrible customer service I feel like I received. Also, they have absolutely terrible hours for their phone lines....If you do only 1 show each saturday, you should keep phone lines open that whole day for whatever issues may arise. Instead you can call up to 1 pm CST...WHY ON EARTH would they have phone lines open until 1 pm CST for a show that occurs in California, at PST? Attire & Crowd: Trendy, semi-dressy crowd with lots of hollywood wannabe types Food: Choices include beef tenderloin, salmon, and chicken. Dessert includes apple tart a la mode, bread pudding, chocolate cake. I pre-ordered the beef tenderloin and apple tart a la mode. The beef tenderloin came with a sort of mushroom gravy sauce on top, which tenderized & gave the beef lots of flavor. The entree included steamed veggies and fried potatoes. the FOOD WAS DEEELICIOUS! i was kind of angry at myself for not being that hungry, so i only ate 1/2 of my food, even though i could've devoured it if i forced myself to. surprisingly, the steamed veggies and fried potatoes were one of the best parts of the entree, as they were both carmelized & had that sweet, crunchy but soft taste. by the time dessert came around, i could barely taste it b/c i was so full from the entree and salad. but the 3 bites that I took tasted good - since the apple tart was warm and had ice cream on top! Ambience: Club-like with a big bar and dark-lit dining area Dinner Detective: They force everybody to take on an 'ALIAS' once you walk into its doors, so you have to pretend to be somebody else & mingle with all the hollywood wannabe types. my friends and i went for a surprise bday party for our girlfriend, so we barely had time to chit chat with the other 'suspects' to figure out WHODUNNIT! The actors for the Dinner Detective Theatre blended into the crowd, so you didn't have any idea who was a victim, suspect, or killer. they did a good job of being incognito and playing their role. The two detective actors also did a good job mediating the conversations and getting the crowd involved, even when the crowd was bad at bantering back! overall, once in a lifetime experience and worth the $65. but now that i've gone, i have no desire to go again! ahah read more

The best "office team building" event I've ever been to! Our office wanted a team building event to go to and we selected The Dinner Detective. It was, by far, the most fun I've ever had for a "mandatory" office event. I wish all of them could be like this. The actors were amazingly quick on their feet with improv lines. With all of the clues they provided and red herrings, the mystery was very difficult to solve. The three main actors (the two Detectives and the real killer) earn extra kudos for deliberately steering the audience in the wrong direction and making it so much more fun in the process. The actors and staff are great and do a fantastic job of getting everyone involved. Based on the food reviews I was expecting to be disappointed but I was fairly surprised! I got the salad, Fettuccine Alfredo and cheesecake for dessert. (None of the photos on Yelp reflect what we were served except for the chicken. Sorry we didn't take pictures but we were busy trying to solve the mystery!) For around $60, we got a great dinner and a show. In my first review, I expressed that the show and actors were great and deserve 5 stars, but I had much frustration/confusion with the company (even before the show) and gave them 1 star because of the following: -Box office rep was extremely unhelpful each time I called -"Actors Tips" envelope at show, even though paying $60-70 per ticket -Food was only OK I was then contacted by the company rep to revise my rating after explaining that "We actually DO pay all of our actors above wage and we feed them (some get the 4 courses) as well... Please consider this and revise your rating as it ends up hurting the actors and the show at the end of the day". Unfortunately, the company rep did not address my other concerns. Had he addressed my other concerns and perhaps been more willing to learn and/or apologize about the issues that I experienced, I would definitely change my rating. Some other things I left out of my previous review because I only wanted to touch on the major factors: -The website states iced tea and coffee is included, but was never offered to anyone in my party -Those in my party were not impressed with the food at all; also disappointed at no beef option -MC (main person who was explaining the show) was a little bossy and slightly unprofessional with the crowd (maybe that was part of the show?) I brought a group of 5 to celebrate my girlfreind's birthday. I'd say that everyone in my group had a good time. One of the people I came with was even talking about coming back when her sister comes back into town. The actors were funny and did a good job of keeping the action moving. The food was good compared to what you are usually served at events like this, although bruschetta was a poor choice for an appetizer for people to eat while standing up. Also, the pumpkin ravioli was mixed in which chicken ravioli on our night. I'd hate to be a vegetarian expecting a meatless dish. I'd recommend this show to others. On a very positive note I was pleasantly suprised that I was able to reach a real live person for information about the show. We had such a fun night. The show was great. One of the most fun nights I have had in a long time. Don't come for the food. It is good food but it isn't what you are paying for. Not sure why so many people are bitching about the food. You can't get dinner AND a show for less than $100 anywhere else. And on a boat no less. The experience is way more fun if you get involved, but don't worry if you are a little shy. My shy friends sat at the table and didn't make the rounds talking to people and still had an amazing night. They all said it beat their expectations. The actors were all so funny and quick witted. I really enjoyed attending this. If you paid attention to the clues, it can be easily solved. It's pretty easy to figure out whose part of the show too. I'm not sure why this has a low rating. My boyfriend and I had SO much fun! We went last year through a Groupon, and...trust me, I buy a LOT of groupons, and this was the best one we've bought to date! I'm so glad we tried it out. My favorite part of this whole event (and I don't want to give too much away) was that they had us tricked and engaged as soon as we stepped in line to enter, and we didn't even realize! A lot of it IS a bit cheesy, but look, it's supposed to be. They know it, you know it, so if you choose to have fun with it, you will. The interactivity, engagement, entertainment factor were all great. The food was better than expected. Most people in the room are going to solve the mystery, the winner is the person who is the most thorough and detailed in their explanation. My boyfriend actually won it! If you're stuck up and think events like this are stupid, then you're right, you probably won't love it. But if you're fun and are curious, i think you'll have a GREAT time!!!! Actors are quite good, and the many surprises at the show make it interesting. One actress in the show sat next to us appearing to be someone who was just there for a night out. My first time going to a mystery murder dinner and it was nothing less than amazing. The waiters were fast, funny, and interactive. The actors were hilarious, super interactive, and really knew how to stay in character with improv. The ice breaker really got the ball moving in the beginning and made everyone a bit more comfortable. The food was delicious! (I had the chicken). My friend and I were constantly making ties from the clues we got and we loved talking to our table about what they thought. Parking was a breeze(valet was $5). I had no idea what to expect when I first heard about this. I didn't know if myself and the people in my party would have to be in character or what the deal was going to be. Honestly I've been to a couple of these things and they've been kind of hokey or over complicated. However this show was awesome! It was easy to participate and actually there are times you may have to as a person in my party who was named a suspect! I attended the show this weekend, have to say it was great! The price is a bit pricy, but worth every dollar. Everyone from the Hostess to the actors are awesome. If you like expensive corporate team building activities in your free time then this is for you but we don't so it was not for us. The setting is strange as it is in a meeting room. The idea that all of these strangers would want to get up and interrogate each other all at once is nuts but I have to say shockingly we seemed to be the only couple who weren't game for this game. So yes people do enjoy it but that is shocking to us as no part of it was fun or enjoyable. The food was good but it didn't come out until after 8 and we were starving since the passed appetizers were scarce. If you weren't seated by 6 you didn't get any. The woman next to me preordered the vegetarian pasta and when we were served she was told they ran out! They ran out of her preselected vegetarian pasta. That's crazy. Everyone kept rushing around trying to find water since it seemed to be the only option yet there wasn't any anywhere. The whole thing was a huge waste of money. Not sure if this is the one at Vitello's in Studio City...but that is what I'm reviewing. Got there at 6 which is when it was called for. Had to wait in small bar as they didn't have the room open. Finally took us and about 50 other people all at once and it was chaos...it was like it was the first time they did this...It was advertised as a 4 course dinner. I would hardly call a wafer thin and narrow piece of pizza, about 3 bites worth, a course. However the salad was nice, salmon and rice tasty but the canoli for dessert was again, about 3 bites. I was not counting on the interactive nature...I had no desire to get up and move around the room and talk to other audience members...I thought that was lame and confusing...and the clues were pathetic. I'm a college grad and had no idea what was going on and how these laminated papers with random information were even clues...and I don't even drink so it's not like my mind was cluttered. For the price, even the discounted price thru Goldstar or Groupon, I thought it was a rip off. I arrived late so I was incredibly rushed when I got there. Leave yourself some "lost" time or you may just miss out on the Hors D'oeuvres, like me. We were crammed into a small space so you were forced to "interview" others with a list of suggested questions. -Or you could be like me and hit the bar. After a good 15 minutes you are seated to your table with a nice basket of bread and butter (thank gawd, since I missed on the appetizers). The salad was nice and large. The chicken very juicy, potatoes nice and crisp and vegetables very flavorful. I will go back for the warm apple tart alone! I would say the dinner was the highlight of the evening. The clues started to become overwhelming (maybe those cocktails kicking in too late?). But all together the show was entertaining, and a great idea for groups (I did this for my birthday). My guests and I had a delightful time and I recommend doing it at least once in your lifetime. Just make sure you don't drink too much, you have to solve the murder pretty much to the T. This was one of the most fun nights we have had in a while! My husband and I went on a Groupon deal and loved it! When you first arrive you are asked to pick a fake name, they take your photo with a prop ($15 each) and then you enter this somewhat dark room where there is assigned seating. It is somewhat cheesy, but that's also the part that makes it so much fun. The actors are great, it seems like they totally have fun with the whole thing. The food was ok, a little dry, but I thought it was good enough, you're there for the experience after all. I loved the chicken empanadas they staretd with, my husband loved the wonton they served. I had the chicken and my husband and my husband had the fish. The drinks are kind of pricey, I think my husband said they were about $14 each, but they were good. I believe you can pay to park in the hotels parking lot, but we parked on a little side street close by and didn't have any problems. It's a really good idea to try to get into it, normally we are not very social people, but luckily some other guests approached us and started asking us questions and that helped us to get out there and mingle and it was fun! I was really interested in wanting to figure out the mystery, if you want to figure it out look closely at the clues, the clues are pretty good. This was such a fun experience, I don't know if I would pay full price for it, but I will definitely keep an eye out for more Groupons. read more

You dont know who's who or whats going to happen from one minute to the next, we had talked to the murderer early in the show and had no idea he was in on it. I'd always wanted to go to a mystery dinner event as sort of a bucket list thing. My best friend bought us tickets and I was really looking forward to an interesting mystery and lots of clues to figure out. It ended up being an improv show with the audience supplying the entertainment for the cast (?). There was no cohesive story whatsoever except a guy running around pretending to be stabbed off scene and then two goofy cops asking the audience all kinds of random stuff to get a laugh. After 90 minutes of what felt like I was attending a high school fundraiser, we left. There was no direction to this plot (if there was even a plot) and completely random clues that meant absolutely nothing nor were explained--just, "Here's a clue! So...where you folks from?" Maybe there was some amazing and fantastic ending that I completely missed, but just couldn't stomach 60 more minutes of riffing by the cast. Sigh read more
