I visited this restaurant with family and was told that it was fabulous. The sensational food and outstanding service proved the claim to be on the mark, making me wish that I lived in York so I could become a regular customer. The setting is colonial with unique artwork and decorative pieces giving a feel of what you expect from historical Pennsylvania. The restaurant had just introduced a new menu offering a wide selection of delectable choices that appealed en masse to our growing appetites. Our table finally settled on two starters, the Scotch Eggs and Calamari. I was absolutely amazed by the eggs, consisting of an incredibly crispy exterior paired with a perfectly cooked yoke. These were by far the best Scotch Eggs ever and can't be missed. The Calamari was equally as good with a light, fragile batter that literally floated on the top of the calamari with lightness and bite-worthy crispness. Chris, our server soon brought out the freshly baked biscuits with butter, which by themselves could've satisfied me as a meal. Soft and baked to an exact consistency of what real biscuits represent, these babies were hard to put down. When I finally ordered the Chopped Greek Salad, my stomach capacity was being severely tested, but I bowed to my duty to indulge and was happy that I'd done so when the salad arrived. It was a massive portion that was shared with several at our table. Unlike most Greek salads, this dish wasn't drowning in dressing and overly saturated with peppers and other overwhelming veggies. Instead, the crispy lettuce was topped with light tempura strips, cubed meat and lightly intermingled with dark olives and a light dressing that brought forward the savory taste of the combined ingredients. It was a fantastic salad and a consummate balance to the starters. Of course, all this food was accompanied by wonderfully mixed extra dirty martinis with blu cheese olives. During our meal, we were visited by Dennis, the main chef who checked to see if we were enjoying the meal. This was a nice touch, firming up the overall quality of this fine restaurant. The others at the table who ordered the glazed salmon, short ribs, Hibachi steak, and pasta Bolognese joined in consensus to rate the food as the best ever. Came down here for a food show with a coworker stopped here for dinner after the show .. not too bad I must say they put a lot of thought into the menu and I appreciate that it was different.. we ordered the oysters we came on Tuesday so they were a dollar, we ordered the Spanish octopus for me it was a little on the salty side but I know traditionally that's how it's made. My coworker loved it however, i ordered the short rib gnocchi for an entree and my coworker the salmon with Brussels sprouts. Both very tasty and for the finale we ordered the vanilla Creme brûlée ... very light and tasty would suggest for a nice Finish to a meal.. read more

Food is usually great here, but came in today and waited 15 minutes without anyone even coming for our drink order. 4 people standing at the hostess stand, you'd think if a staffing issue was the reason they would offer to at least get your drink order, but they were too busy chatting with each-other. Ended up leaving and the hostess who seated us didn't even bother to ask why we were walking out. Sadly won't be back here anymore, which is a shame because the food is great. My fiancé and I drove an hour away to try this place. It was our first time here, and let me tell you the food was phenomenal! Yes it is a bit pricey, but the food is flavorful and cooked just perfectly with great proportions. We had a wonderful server as well. I didn't have a reservation, but they still sat us down fairly quick. I had the surf and turf, and my fiancé had the truffle gnocchi, highly recommend both of those as well as the fried Brussel sprouts and calamari for an appetizer. The only thing I have to complain about would be a lot of staff didn't have their masks on properly and they were okay with costumers not wearing theirs right either, but I mean I can't complain too much I went to a restaurant during a pandemic. read more

I had a solid, but not exceptional, meal at The First Post. The restaurant had good atmosphere. We had the Scotch egg appetizer, which were good but not the best I've had. I had the cioppino as my main. Overall, it was good but the broth had some stray chunks of shell throughout that occasionally lead to an unpleasantly crunchy bite. I would have preferred a bit spicier of a broth as well. The brownie a la mode for dessert was great. read more

Was on the way home from visiting family and we decided to stop. The atmosphere is very relaxed. The noise level is about average for a Sunday evening. Love them old tavern feel of the establishment. We had the burrata as an appetizer. If you love fresh mozzarella, you need to try this . The greens , squash and beet that accompanied the cheese were amazing. A must is the cream of crab. I had a cup and it shared it with my husband. It was the creamiest soup I have ever had . So rich. Dinner was Habachi steak and the sausage and scallop pasta . Hidden gem in York, PA. The place used to be a bnb but is now a restaurant that has this really lovely wood interior. The tap list offers a great selection of local beers and cocktails. Been here a few times, but last night we got the fried brussel sprouts and the calamari (the honey lemon aioli sauce is so good). Passing through York on the way homeward, we stopped at The First Post for dinner, and were both very pleasantly surprised with every aspect of our experience. The atmosphere is upscale and nice, and dress styles range from fairly dressy for some customers (suits/ties or dresses) to wholly casual for others (t-shirts/shorts). However you show up, the restaurant is happy to accept you. Our server was friendly and attentive--quite good at his job. Much the same could be said for the people staffing the welcoming station near the front door. As for the food, everything we ordered was delicious across the board! We began with Caesar salads, which were fresh and creamy. I ordered the surf and turf, and got a nice-sized, well-seasoned lobster tail along with a perfectly-cooked filet mignon along with a goodly portion of mashed potatoes and fresh-off-the-grill asparagus. A+. My partner ordered the scallop entrée, and loved the bacony sauce in which it is served, as well as the flavor combination of the risotto that accompanies that particular entrée. With zero hesitation, the next time we're passing through York around dinnertime, we'll be back for more great food. read more

The first post is the place to eat in York! We always order the scotch eggs and by far the best scotch eggs! Seasoned perfectly! The egg is not rubbery like the other places we tried. We ate here for our first time on our trip to Pennsylvania. The French onion soup's presentation was excellent! The soup itself was ok but not the best. Our Main Entrees were incredible! Possibly some of the best food ever. The Filet Mignon was as big and better than even a Ruth's Chris. And much cheaper. Shrimp and grits and the Hibachi steak were awesome! Great experience!! We had a wedding rehearsal luncheon for 21 in The Presidents Room. The managers, Aaron and Lori, were great to work with and happily accommodated all our needs. Our server, Jodi, and her team were top notch. We could not have asked for better service. The food was fantastic! I wish I had taken pics of the food, but was too busy enjoying it. I had dinner last night at The First Post; a Monday night. On a prior occasion, I attempted to have dinner at The First Post on a Friday evening. However, the wait time was one-and-a-half hours, so I went somewhere else. About 4:00 p.m., the restaurant was practically empty except for a few people at the bar. I ordered one dozen BEAU SOLEIL - Prince Edward Island oysters ($2.50/ea.), from the Raw Bar, as an appetizer. Lexi, the server, brought the oysters to the table. The oyster presentation looked appetizing and fresh with the oysters carefully set on a bed of ice surrounding cocktail sauce and mignonette sauce with a few orange and lemon slices. Although the oysters were small, the taste was sweet and slightly briny. I was not impressed with the cocktail or mignonette sauce. The cocktail sauce almost tasted like ketchup because of the absent flavor of horseradish. The mignonette sauce was bland, almost flavorless. For my entree, I ordered the CIOPPINO (seafood soup: shrimp, scallops, fish, crab, calamari, clams, tomatoes, onion, fennel, and grilled sourdough with uni butter). Cioppino is a fish stew originating in Northern California. Most restaurants on the East Coast refer to the Italian-American dish as "Fishermen's Stew." Whenever I see Cioppino or Fishermen's Stew on the menu, I order it. I like to compare the stew against other establishment's version of the stew. I compared The First Post's Cioppino to BlueStone's Crisfield Stew (fresh fish, scallops, shrimp, mussels and potatoes simmered in tomato and vegetable broth, Italian bread). The First Post's Cioppino had more seafood in it than Bluestone's Crisfield Stew. The Cioppino was prepared with large morsels of seafood, and two Stone Crab Claws. It was absolutely delicious! The sourdough bread was sliced and over-toasted with the uni compound butter. BlueStone's Crisfield Stew's Italian bread was served similar to a baguette that was a terrific accompaniment to the stew whereby you could tear the bread into pieces and dip it into the seafood base. BlueStone's Crisfield Stew was superior to The First Post's Cioppino based solely on the flavor of the fish broth and bread. I liked, not loved, The First Post's Cioppino and would order it again. I also recommend it to seafood lovers. The Cioppino is served in a large bowl, and hearty enough to skip an appetizer. The service was not spectacular or what I expected from a restaurant of its caliber. Lexi forgot to bring the bread, served the soup with a teaspoon, and the soup was not hot. It was lukewarm. She was friendly and accommodating, but not attentive to details. Regardless of the comparison and minor serving faults, I highly recommend visiting and enjoying a meal at The First Post, Monday through Thursday. read more

Great place for a nice dinner out or a casual place to grab some beers and bites. When I visit my folks in York, we try to make it over here; it's their new favorite place and it's definitely mine too! I love a place with a solid beer selection on draft. They have one or two of their own, and usually mix in a bunch of local PA beers (Troegs and Lancaster brewing are often featured), plus a few more nationally-known microbrews. I can never pick just one or two (FOMO), so I usually opt for the 5 drink flight. Two flights lets you try well over half of their offerings. Typically, we get a bunch of appetizers and call it a meal, but their entrees, sandwiches, and burgers are decent to; I'm a big fan of lamb burger. Top three pics for appetizers: Burrata - creamy mozzarella is so good!, Tzatziki and Red Pepper Hummus with a nice medley of vegetables and pita, and definitely the Lettuce Wraps which by themselves make a great meal with good sauces. It's often quite packed, so plan to wait if it's the weekend or try your luck in the bar. Service is fast and friendly. A highly recommended spot! read more

The food is amazing, the service is where they lost a star. While it's a weird time right now for restaurants, I would have thought they would be more accommodating for carry out - not the case. If the carry out pick up is at the bar, put a sign that directs you so you're not waiting in line with people waiting for tables. Also, designated parking spots for carry out would be really appreciated, especially with evening summertime thunderstorms. But the food was amazing! They even went so far as to separate the protein from the salads so the greens wouldn't wilt - thank you!! Bottom line, I would definitely go back and would recommend, but I'd hope they get a better carry out system. read more

First time here. Food was fabulous. Nicely greeted upon arrival by the hostess. Did not realize that they have a shuttle from parking lot, which is very unique for such a large restaurant. We will have to take the shuttle next visit. Really original but unique inside the place. Brings ya back to old times with the decor as well as lighting. Server educated us and the wood inside is all from old Church pews. Lori, our server was very friendly and accommodating to us. Dinner rolls- awesome. Nice soft crisp top with very soft texture. Appetizers- great - I got the scotch egg and wife got the Crab soup Salads- as expected for a salad. Cold & crisp with housemate dressing. Entrees- awesome and portions were great. I got the special, Halibut. I did not want the starch that came with it so they allow you to switch up the starch from other menu items. Risotto was my choice. Well prepared and good flavor.
