I have been wanting to try the Flying Spoon located on the airport in Santa Paula for a while, what a wonderful dining experience we had. Definitely a hidden gem with incredible cuisine, love the feel of the dining areas as well as the covered patio adjacent to the tarmac. Cozy sitting areas surrounded by booths and tables with a counter that faces a full wall of windows with great views of the planes landing and taking off. Slightly different than your average restaurant or cafe because you order and pay at the counter, you find your table sit down and they bring you your food. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We went for breakfast and their menu offers great breakfast dishes as well as lunch dishes so we decided to try both breakfast and lunch entrees from the menu, they have a great coffee menu and an awesome barista preparing great matcha, lattes, chai lattes, mochas and cappuccino drinks. Delicious drip coffee as well, bold and flavorful. Also offering locally made pastries of all kinds all looking decadent. The BLTA was delizioso, full of fresh ingredients and packed full of bacon-no skimping on bacon! Bread is freshly made sourdough thickly sliced, so good. French fries were flavorful and cooked to perfection. The Scottish Eggs were unbelievably scrumptious, never had them before but was told it's the house specialty. The sausage gravy was scratch made and no skimping on the sausage as well. Portions are good sized so we brought home a second meal. They do serve dinner and can't wait to come back for an evening of deliciousness. They are open Wednesday through Sunday for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I have to say what a pleasure to find a local off the beaten path establishment that has unbelievable food, great staff, cozy environment and very reasonable prices, thrilled to have The Flying Spoon so close to home! Food: good. Services: Odd but, okay once use to it. You order at counter. You take beverages with your number to a table. only had S & P. Server brings food to table. Not once did any check on us. I had to get up; stand, in-line to get refill of coffee and water. I've eaten at other small airports and enjoyed watching the planes come and go, but The Flying Spoon was by far one of the cutest airport restaurants I've experienced. There was more than enough room for a larger group, and the patio was spacious, beautifully shaded, and offered a front-row view of planes landing and taking off. And let me tell you--the mountain backdrop was absolutely breathtaking! I was so relaxed and comfortable... exactly what I needed for my day. Now, let's get to this Cowboy Breakfast! OH. MY. GOD. The steak was so tender I could've cut it with a butter knife! The entire dish was bursting with flavor. The eggs, potatoes, sourdough toast, and strawberry jam all came together perfectly. Everything was seasoned so well that I honestly didn't even need salt, pepper, or ketchup. And y'all know I had to add just a little pepper because I'm not exactly an egg girlie--but I eat them. Every bite was a little flavor explosion in my mouth! If you're looking for a quiet environment, I didn't quite get that today because the patio was FULL of babies. I came back to try lunch here. I got the turkey focaccia with tallow fries. The cost was $23. You pick up and menu at the table when entering the cafe and order at the counter. You are given a number and can sit anywhere; they bring your food to you. They sell fresh baked sourdough loaves too! The sandwich was delicious with so much turkey that it was falling out of the sandwich; which I am not opposed to. I loved it! Coming from SCV this is a quick and easy drive. Love seeing the planes take off and land while I eat. The servers are so nice and friendly. Came for breakfast but ended up getting lunch. The Avon burger is awesome, loved the bacon with it. It was not too busy, the line moved fast. It's a sit in but you order at the front. Quite indoor seating or outdoor seething to hear the planes. High quality beef, cooked exactly as ordered. Several burgers to choose from. Today, I tried the buttermilk biscuits and gravy. This is a dish the chef was still working on at last week's visit. Here's my take. The gravy is quite savory and rich. Explosion of intense taste awaits. The biscuit was not to my liking however. The consistency and density were those of a scone, not a traditional buttermilk biscuit. The density prevented the biscuit from sopping up the wonderful gravy. A flakier, less dense biscuit would make this dish outstanding. Highly recommend Flying Spoon. I vote with my wallet and taste buds several times a month. read more

I ended up grabbing a fresh gluten free bread loaf to go ($10). I came here with my mother and we both got the CFI breakfast, eggs your way, toast and a side of meat. I opted no meat and grabbed a slice of gluten free bread ($3 up charge) came with a side of homemade jam. I also got the purple skies tea which had a variety of flavors in it and tasted delicious! The spot itself has soooo much natural light , is nice decorated and it seems as though so much thought was put into making people feel welcome . Stopped in for a cup of coffee after hearing the old hanger re opened as the Flying Spoon. The space is just as I remembers just reimagined a bit. The coffee bar is very welcoming and the pastries welcoming you in were amazing! The pastries are all made in house and I loved that a lot of the options were made with sourdough which is hands down my favorite all around so when it's used for other pastries I'm all in! I grabbed the cafe de olla latte and it changed me, sometimes regular cafe de olla is bitter and over time the flavor draws on you, this latte won't it's balanced and flavorful and I would order it every opportunity. WOW! I am absolutely blown away by this place. Let me start by saying I was gutted when Flight126 closed. I thought "whoever is in this space next has big shoes to fill". Flying Spoon did not disappoint! ATMOSPHERE: When you first walk in, I was struck by how different it looks. It's much more open and there's lots to look at. I am really happy that they kept some of the original elements like the photographs and some of the booths. You order at the counter and they bring you the food. Water is on the left and is self serve. We were immediately greeted by the staff, all of which were friendly and genuinely kind. We ordered a lot to try to get a feel of everything. There is a case of pastries (sweet and savory), as well as lots of goodies from local vendors (candles, mugs, dog treats, etc) STAFF: Everyone is so nice. Steph gave us some great background and exciting updates about the place. Everything is made in house, even their bread! They currently have a small team but are hoping to grow, thus eventually resulting in a larger menu and dinner options. FOOD: We ordered: - cold brew, black - iced vanilla bean latte - apple bacon manchego cinny roll (savory) - cinnamon croissant / pastry with apple jam - 2 sides of pork sausage - cowboy plate - buttermilk biscuit & gravy Everything came out quickly despite ordering a lot of items. Cold brew and iced vanilla bean latte: my husband loved his cold brew! It's very strong but smooth. My vanilla bean latte was amazing and got better with every sip. Apple bacon manchego cinny roll - a savory pastry that looks like a cinnamon roll. We loved this! It's true comfort food; the type you want to just eat in bed on a lazy Sunday. I loved the fluffy texture and the chive spread on top. This reminded me of something I'd get from Roan Mills in Fillmore. Cinnamon croissant / pastry with apple jam : this was so yummy! Perfectly sweet and you could feel the love in it. Pork sausage: A MUST TRY!!!!!!!!! The patty is larger than I expected. At first, it just looks like a burger patty, but I couldn't have been more wrong. This was SO JUICY and perfectly seasoned. I loved how the herby bits cut through the fat. My husband doesn't usually like breakfast sausage but he loved this. This was worth every penny. Again, you NEED to get this!! Cowboy plate: another hit!!! The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The steak was cooked to a medium doneness which I prefer, but I'm sure you could ask for well-done if that's what you like. The chimichuri sauce was excellent. The potatoes were well cooked with a little crisp. The eggs were beautiful and the kale was a nice touch. Overall this is the most picture perfect plate you could ever order in Santa Paula. Buttermilk biscuit & gravy : this item is so unique! I usually don't like biscuits & gravy because the biscuits at most places are pretty dry and floury. This biscuit was flaky, buttery, and had a flavor of its own . The gravy is unlikely any other gravy I've had before. It's not your traditional bacon + sausage gravy. It's very mild/light in flavor , and hard to describe. The best way I can describe it is herby it subtle - I know that doesn't help much! As I kept eating it, I liked it more and more. I think this is the only way a gravy could complement their biscuit, because a traditional white gravy would've drowned out the flavor of the biscuit. I think this is a really good share plate. We loved everything that we ordered! I think their menu caters to more of an herby palette, so if that's your jam, then this is the spot for you. For the quality and portion size, we felt that they were very well priced. OVERALL: 10/10 for me. Aside from exceeding expectations, I have to give them props of having everything perfect while being so new. Usually it takes new restaurants a couple of months to get things right, but there were 0 misses with Flying Spoon. Even if you're not here to sit down and eat, I still think this is a great spot to grab and latte and pastry - it would be the same price as Starbucks, but it would taste better and you'd get more bang for your buck! Breakfast was unfortunately disappointing. I understand the restaurant is under new ownership and appears to be moving toward a farm-to-table concept, but the overall experience didn't justify the higher prices. The pancakes were dry, served without butter, and nothing additional was offered. Since you pay before your food is brought out, the interaction feels limited--they simply drop off your order, which is a very different experience from what this restaurant used to offer. Drinks are now self-serve from a refrigerator, so there are no complimentary soda refills like there were in the past. It's another small change that takes away from the overall dining experience. There were no extra napkins available at the table beyond the one wrapped around the silverware, and there weren't any condiments, seasonings, or small touches that help elevate a meal. The open layout also carries every conversation throughout the dining room, making it feel less comfortable than expected. The staff was incredibly kind, and they were the highlight of our visit. However, the menu is missing many of the longtime favorites that regular customers enjoyed, and the current offerings felt bland and overpriced for what was served. I truly hope the new owners find their rhythm because the location has so much potential. Our family LOVES The Flying Spoon. Every single thing we've gotten is incredible. We eat very clean in our home so we appreciate that The Flying Spoon uses high quality clean ingredients as well. All of their food is fresh and homemade and you can really taste it! Favorites include the latte, get the seasonal flavor. The cinnamon roll. The biscuits and gravy is insane- the biscuit is sooooo good and the gravy is filled with herbs, I've never had anything like it. The avocado toast. The burgers and fries. We always get one of each breakfast burrito and then split them so we have one half of each, ask for the orange hot sauce I forgot what it's called but it's amazing. The Caesar and house salad are amazing. We got the dinner risotto and added steak the other night Togo, I am in my first trimester and nothing is tasting good right now and it was still one of the best things I've ever had. I also love their handmade goods section, I always grab a few hand painted cards and a candle. ** I see so many people leaving poor reviews stating that this is different than the last restaurant... this is literally a different restaurant lol. The reviews should be removed because... why are we reviewing a different restaurant. Seems very unfair to the new restaurant that has taken over the old restaurants lease. While we loved the old restaurant, we loved The Flying Spoon even more because one, it's absolutely delicious, and two, where else in Ventura County can you order food served with HIGH QUALITY CLEAN INGREDIENTS?! The switch to ordering at the counter seems like an attempt at a more modern concept, but it just doesn't fit the cozy café experience that made this place special. During our visit, they were out of orange juice, biscuits and gravy, and pancakes--basically several of the breakfast staples you'd expect to be available. On top of that, the portion sizes are much smaller than they used to be, especially for the prices they're charging now. The overall vibe just felt off, and it wasn't the warm, inviting place we remembered. It's honestly disappointing because this used to be one of our favorite breakfast spots. Won't be back. We thought we would give the Flying Spoon a try tonight. Not busy when we arrived. No Diet Coke available and my husband's tea tasted strange. Not a huge deal that I ended up with a can of orange soda water when all I wanted was plain soda water from the bar. What was an issue was that after over 30 min of waiting for our food to arrive, we were told that it would be another 5-10 min. We were offered a cookie or pastry before the delay was related to us, but didn't want dessert before dinner. Unfortunately I am not sure if they understand that making a good first impression when opening a new restaurant is critical. I really wanted to support this new restaurant because it's a unique addition to town, but my experience was extremely disappointing. I initially tried calling in a to-go order several times, but no one answered the phone. I decided to drive over and place my order in person instead. After ordering at the counter, I was given a table number and told to wait. After waiting for 40 min with no update, I finally returned to the counter to ask how much longer my order would take. The employee at the register appeared confused, went to the back, then returned and realized my completed order had been sitting next to the register the entire time. He even commented that he had been wondering "who this order belonged to". At that point I considered asking for a refund, but the employee seemed to have difficulty even locating my original order in the system, so I simply took the food and left. As expected after sitting for so long, the food was cold and soggy by the time I got home. I understand that mistakes happen in food service, and one mistake alone wouldn't keep me from returning. My concern was the complete lack of communication, organization, and supervision. The restaurant felt like it was being run almost entirely by inexperienced high school employees and while that is fine, IT DOES NOT WORK IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A MANAGER TO SUPERVISE. I own a local business and I always enjoy recommending good local restaurants. I was hoping this would become one of them, but after this experience I can't recommend it. The bartender/server was fantastic, however, who I thought was the "bar back" was one of the servers a female. There was also another female server who was blonde and both seemed to be bullying the dude bartender, putting him down and talking bad about him in front of customers. We loved Flight 126. A good, old-fashioned coffee shop with hearty meals and a great variety. The Flying Spoon is completely different. Not a full-service restaurant -- you order at the counter and take your number to your table. There are no condiments or salt and pepper at the table, no coffee refills, no water. The menu is very limited, about one-third of the offerings by the previous owner. Everything is very "health conscious" which isn't a bad thing, but if you're coming in looking for the variety of the previous menu you will be disappointed. They did a nice job on the remodel, it's very pretty inside. But just not the classic, local feel of the previous place. We probably won't be back. Very sad. read more
