This is an awesome, almost secretive place to bring people. The ambience was just perfect. It has almost a prohibition-era, classy feel to it. The inside is small, so I highly recommend making reservations. We went on a Tuesday night, thinking it would be dead, but every single table was packed. The drinks are incredibly fun. Their happy hour features $1 oysters and a $5 cocktail of their choosing. The table ended up getting a dozen oysters and the bourbon battered cheese curds as starters. All of it was gone within seconds of hitting the table! I ended up ordering the steak frites. It came with a roasted head of garlic, drool, and fries on the side. Also in their containers were the truffle sauce and béarnaise sauce. Was it the best steak frites? No. But it got the job done. I'm in love with any place that has speakeasy/prohibition era vibes. Laugh if you will but I intended to go to the drifter, got lost and wandered into this place after dinner. Located in River North blocks from HQ beercade which is where we were first. It's really cool, great music, staff, and I would most definitely consider it a whiskey bar. There are bottles all throughout the restaurant. Beautiful bar - I would say the entire place seats at least 50-75. Walked right in on a Friday after 9, no wait, no reservation. There is a food menu (we didn't eat there as I mentioned we ate before). Perfect for date nights I saw lots of folks coupled up - very romantic. I even saw a lot of friends there too it's a really great place and I can't wait to return for dinner. The highlighted cocktails were great, strong and worth the price. A friend introduced this place to me and my fiancé couple weeks back and I would say, such a good recommendation it is. Not only they have a lovely ambience and good seating with quality drinks but they have this really cool BOTTLE SHELF service which they provide to the customers where a customer can purchase a bottle of Whiskey and store it on their shelf with a fancy name tag and can come back to get drinks made from the same bottle. The best part is, cocktails made from your bottle are free of cost. One average bottle costs between 250-500 unless you want a very high end bottle which is expensive than its market price but you can get around 13 drinks made out of it, still expensive. I had a meeting with my team this week at The Franklin Room and liked it. I sat at the bar first planning to grab a drink pre-meeting as I was a bit early. I was given water by the busser but sat for a few minutes without ordering and wondering if I should flag someone down. Before I could do that though, one of my coworkers showed up and we grabbed a booth instead. The server at our booth was awesome! She was so nice, made recommendations, checked in on us the perfect amount and was very accommodating. Boss man wanted to come here for the $1 oysters and the others feasted on those. This shellfish-allergic chick ended up with a grilled chicken sandwich and I thoroughly enjoyed it. A bit smaller in size than what I'm used to, it was quite thick and topped with tomato, lettuce, bacon vinaigrette, pickled red onions, honey mustard and provolone cheese. Yep, all of that. Smooshed between a pretzel bun. It was thick and I liked it! The fries it came with were cooked just right and tasty, too. Not too shabby for $14. Plus they packed my leftovers in an awesome carry out bag. They have a huge selection of whiskey, whiskey cocktails and other alcoholic drinks including various specials. I'm boring and went for my usual - beer! They didn't have any beers I haven't had before on their which was sad for me, but I did see quite a few I enjoy. Like I had mentioned before, I knew I had to come back and try either a cocktail/whiskey here or some food. And we ended up trying both! Anyways, fiancee ended getting off work at a decent hour last Friday and it had been quite the busy week at work so we decided to go out and try to catch the last 30 minutes of happy hour at The Franklin Room and ended up having dinner as well. First thing is first, Franklin Room happy hour is a bit complex but as I recall the specials were... -$1 oysters 5pm to 6:30pm everyday -$5 whiskey boys or sparkling wine 5pm to 6:30pm Tuesdays - Saturdays -Sundays 25% off your bill 5pm to close -Monday half price bottles of wine 5pm to close Being Friday with half hour to go during happy hour, I ended up trying their whiskey boy cocktail which is their premade concoction with bourbon, sherry, demerera, & bitters and served in a take home souvenir glass flask. Essentially their spin on an old fashioned, and it was delicious and awesome for $5. And ended up being able to put in one more order just before happy hour finished. Whoop whoop, TURN UP. For food, we shared short rib poutine ~ braised short rib, beef jus, fries, feta, pickled red onion, and top with some spice for a little kick. The short rib was super tender and had a sort of korean style sort of marinade to it as I recalled and the pickled red onion gave it some freshness. All in all, excellent for sharing. We also shared an order of their Surf & Turf burger ~ wagyu beef patty cooked to perfection, soft shell crab, whiskey balsamic, cheddar, provolone, sunnyside egg, on a pretzel bun. This burger was bangin' and our server Dan even had the chef split it in half on two separate plates with our subbed side salad without us even having to ask. So thoughtful! Anyways, when ambiance, service, and food all hit the mark for ya, you end up leaving with a great experience overall. Franklin Room is a great spot for happy hour and even date nights I would say. I am so glad we bumped into one of the employees here! A fantastic weekend in started off with us meeting one of the managers (?) at another bar. He invited us to stop in, so we did and were so impressed! First of all, the drinks! Everyone enjoyed their cocktails I had the Clover Club because I often enjoy cocktails using egg whites. The frothy texture and creamy flavor help this drink go down smooth and delicious. Between the Manhattans and everything else we ordered, everyone was very happy with the cocktail menu. I think the establishment was out of one particular bourbon we attempted to order, but another great selection was recommended. The food. Was. Phenomenal. Short ribs. Sea bass. Burger. We all raved. I feel like a dufus for not taking pictures (and thereby remembering everything we ordered), but suffice to say it was because we all had such a great time that I didn't think to pick up my phone even once. One of the best dinners I've had in a long time. Don't sleep on Franklin Room. We ordered the following: - Spicy Bourbon Mussels - Lamb Chops - Steak Tartare - Ribeye - Ricotta Ravioli Every single dish was so flavorful and cooked perfectly. The mussels are probably my favorite mussels ever, the miso it's bathed in... oh I wanted to drink it! We decided to split the ribeye and had the kitchen slice with the ravioli and it was actually the perfect meal. The black truffles on the ravioli are life changing. I wasn't sure that whiskey bars got much better than Delilah's, but we may have discovered another whiskey den in Chicago that's every bit its match: The Franklin Room. This space is quite upscale, but in that late 2010s characteristic style where the servers have lots of tattoos and wear bartender's aprons and the staff has a whiskey steward (our world's equivalent of a sommelier) who curates the collection. Overall, the space is gorgeous: art deco ceilings, Roaring 20's style banquettes, a wood-paneled bar, all surrounded by wall cabinets displaying this bar's hundreds of bottles. The service could not be better, and this place seemed very popular. When we first arrived, we weren't able to even get space at the bar, and spent the first hour or two lounging at a series of small standing room only tables close to the host station. However, by the end of the night, they graciously moved us to a booth even though we were only indulging in a liquid diet by that point. My wife and I shared a burger earlier in the night, and it was incredibly juicy and satiating. However, the highlight of the night was trying a bunch of whiskies. There are two features of how this bar serves whiskey that I love. First, they serve 1 oz pours, which enables you to try more. Second, they have a seasonal special menu where the selected whiskies are about 50% off regular prices. These people know how to cook. The salmon will knock your socks off and the scallops are perfect. Had the sea bass as well but would chose the salmon over that. Do yourself a huge favor and get the carrot side dish. The carrots are infused with flavor on a bed of hummus and pistachios. The wine by the glass list is short but very well curated. I was pleased and I can be persnickety!!! Now: listen to me and save room for dessert. Both the mango cheesecake and chocolate crunch are FANTASTIC. Music a touch loud but not offensive. (Do NOT sit outside under the el tracks; it's extremely LOUD) . The restaurant itself is very small so make reservations or you'll be sitting under the el tracks if you're lucky, and it will be unpleasant. The waitstaff is attentive, the kitchen takes its time and fusses over your food, but it's worth it. The only thing I don't like about this place is the interior design. Looking up at the ceiling you see the floorboards of the upper level, typical in a historic building, but they felt compelled to put some decorative metal grating up there, and by the bar, lowered the ceiling. It was a bit claustrophobic, and belies the elegance of the food. Something to think about when upgrade time comes. Overall they deliver an exceptional experience. read more

We met really friendly people at the bar here that complimented the drinks, which we agreed were amazing. :) As for the dinner, I liked it but it was very different for me. I loved the truffle fries but I would not eat the mushroom pasta or the chicken again, I'd probably go with something else. I've been meaning to check out Franklin Room for some time now and I was just never able to commit to dining there. Well I put my commitment issues aside and came in on Saturday night. Walking in the vibe was cool and very intimate but didn't love walking down the entrance stairs in 6 inch heels. After my friend and I were seated we skimmed through the cocktail list and the dinner menu. I ordered a Whisky sour and my friend got the Madame Chareau. Both were delicious and I'm a sucker for a real whisky sour ( egg whites and all). For dinner we split the Baked Lobster Mac & Cheese, broccolini and New York strip. WOW WOW WOW. Everything was delicious. The steak was nicely cooked and the Mac & Cheese was super flavorful without being heavy and over powering. Over all I will for sure be back there was still a handful of menu items I want to try. The service was beyond meh but the food and cocktails made up for it. read more

I ordered the Wagyu tartare and it was definitely my favorite from the menu - it was delicious and seasoned perfectly and the Wagyu, of course, melted in my mouth! I demolished the appetizer before I knew it. For my main, I got the prime bone-in ribeye, and it was cooked perfectly to my medium-well liking. It wasn't mind-blowingly delicious but it was definitely tasty and a good choice to get. The service was a little inconsistent at times but we all received our food and drinks well, so there are no overall complaints. This is the type of establishment where business deals are made. Super low key yet very elite. From the dim cut lights to the high quality selection of liquors, this is definitely a lovely place. I had never been before but I was taken here on a date. The bar tender made me two jack and gingers. I also had an order of their mussels. Such a good choice. The bread given with the mussels are toasted alright. A bit too greasy and not enough toasted. The broth from the mussels was really good; a bit sweet yet soothing to the stomach. I met up with some coworkers recently for some drinks and dinner. Our server was extremely helpful when it came to picking beverages. She had a great handle for the different flavor profiles of their large cocktail menu and pushed me in the right direction. We were excited to find out they were serving $1 oysters, and ordered 15 for our table of 3. Normally, I could eat 15 oysters myself, but not these. They weren't all that flavorful and were covered with chopped pickled cucumber that really didn't enhance the taste at all. As for dinner, we settled on a pile of appetizers to share. We ordered the cauliflower parmesan "tots" expecting they would be shreded and more "tot like" but instead they were just deep fried nuggets of cauliflower. Delicious none the less. The chicken drumettes were sweet and delicious as well. Same with the duck liver pate. Very nice! That said, the brussels sprouts were REALLY tangy and kind of off-putting. For me the highlight of the meal was the short rib poutine. The flavors and textures just came out perfectly and I love that they use feta in this dish. I secretly wished I had ordered it for myself as it felt like a tragedy to share. This was one of our favorite spots! We had reservations for the bar scheduled for 7:30 pm, however we had issues with our air B n B and had to postpone them. They were very gracious about letting us postpone until 8:30 and we made it just on time! First time in Chicago for me and I got to start it out with a gorgeous new experience! When you walk in you go down a staircase. Everything is dark and you are surrounded by beautiful lighted bottles of various forms of alcohol. The view and ambiance was amazing. My wife and I were visiting Chicago for her birthday. We had never been to the Franklin Room before. I must say it was outstanding. The lighting and decor was cozy, located under street level. Our server was very good. Very attentive without overly hovering. But the food was absolutely next level. We ordered the steak tartare as a starter. Amazing! She then had the tortellini with mushroom truffle sauce and I had the scallops. Both were incredible! There are restaurants with good food, but this was definitely a step up from good. If ur gonna do a fancy burger dont use amarican cheese. Wish it had blue cheese. The actual burger was tender but was bland needed seasoning. The actual softshell crab was very bland it didnt have seasoning on it. The black truffle aioli was gross it didnt taste like truffles and wasnt decadent tasted like it was mayonnaise and balsamic. The bun wasn't toasted so the burger was falling apart. Arugula should be used instead of lettuce. Loved the egg though. Wouldn't order a burger here. We started with a cocktail. I had their signature Old Fashion. It was sooooo good. Well balanced, no muddled fruit that overpower the bourbon. Not too strong. Just wonderful. My son started with a short pour of 1792. Wonderful. Our waitress was fantastic, patient and helped explain all the dishes. Wasn't hovering but always there to help make the evening great. They have an amazing cocktail menu with a great choice of bourbons, whiskeys from around the world, great wine and more. For food we started with their Oyster special during Happy Hour. $1 each. They are presented beautifully, they are really fresh and meaty, and the condiments including the cucumber balls are amazing. You have to try these. Definitely worth coming just for these. We decided to split several small plates for dinner. We ordered their Mussels and the Pork Belly. The Mussels were flavorful. Good amount, plenty to split. The Pork Belly was good and the order is huge. We also split Cauliflower Tots and the Wagyu Beef Tartare. Wow. The Cauliflower is really good - flavorful and filling. The Tartare is prepared so fresh and was perfect. Not a bad dish all night. We finished up with desserts (yes we over ate). We had a Bourbon Caramel Shake and the deconstructed Banana Split. Four and a half stars for a purist drinking experience. Peter and Ugna poured us into a state of euphoria upon stopping in for happy hour and lingering until our dinner reservation. Even the indie background tunes seduced me. Settling in early allowed us to pick their brains until the evening bro crowds piled in. Their recommendations for trying unexplored peaty options were spot on, and they were honest about any uncertainties. I always appreciate when what they do or don't have is made clear upfront. I strayed from the more traditional sounding cocktails, Derby Day Mule and Whiskey Boy, and ended up regretting the decision. Pours were also good for the mixed drinks, but the resulting tastes were more interesting than delicious. The caraway in the Peasant Fare was so overwhelming that you kinda craved Indian food, and the 42nd Ward was sweeter than I would've liked. The $1 oysters were a little aggressive on the house chili sauce, but the pickled cucumber dice was nice and will have to try my hand at yuzu ice at home. Honestly, I was so intrigued by their food menu, I almost cancelled our plans to just dine here: cauliflower Parmesan tots, cheddar fried smelt, pulled pork sandwich, fried chicken, squid ink pasta, lamb shank with pancetta grits, shrimp pot pie, venison chops, mushroom risotto, duck noodle soup. When I saw the menu, I knew we HAD to come here. The food, wine list, cocktails, presentation, service are all fabulous. Everything that came out was even better than the previous dish. I tried 3 different wines and they all paired perfectly with the food. Server Dan was exceptional and I highly suggest asking for his station. Great vibe, with shelves full of whiskey all around, nice lighting, and a chill soundtrack. The whiskey flights are interesting, and there is an extensive list of well-made cocktails. Wines by the glass are limited, but are stored at the right temperatures. We grazed on small plates and liked everything we had. The smoked fish board included three kinds of fish, but the standout was the trout pate, which can also be ordered separately. Cauliflower "tots" were actually cauliflower florets tempura fried. They were nice and light. The accompanying blue cheese dip was very mild; horseradish would have worked even better. The highlight of the meal was the mussels (which I forgot to photograph). They were served in a spicy miso broth that was great for dipping the accompanying toast. Best mussels I've had anywhere! We split a Smokehouse burger, which was good, but the "bacon" was a delicious chunk of smoked pork belly that was far too thick to eat in the burger.
