I appreciate the amount of strawberries and bananas that were in the bowl, but where is the actual oatmeal? Cmon, for $7 your customers should get more than a SHALLOW BOWL OF LIQUID MUSH... I recently made the decision to be as vegetarian (haven't quite taken fish off the menu) as I can and it's not easy. Thankfully, I live only a few streets down from this little cafe on Ximeno and 4th to help keep me honest as I gradually learn not to fear the vegan way. I only get to visit my mother once in a while to keep the risk of transmitting something evil into her household to a minimum so I agonized over trying to find something that was easy to transport for the 1.5 hour drive, that was in an eco-friendly container (just make sure to tell them to 86 the utensils because I think those are still plastic) and likely to stay warm. Of course a breakfast burrito checks the first and last box. I had no idea the Grain Cafe specialized in Mexican dishes so after flicking through many Mexican options that either opened too late or had disappointing recent pics of styrofoam, they were my #1 choice. I called the order in before I walked out the door and it was ready well within the ten minute time frame they gave me. There was no one there at 7:45 AM on a Sunday, sadly. Vegan food will not be "cheap" in the near future. It's still too difficult to replicate meat and dairy, plus the animal product alternatives don't have the mass appeal of the real thing. Still, I'd rather pay for quality versus getting something that sacrifices the whole point of going vegetarian in order to pay less. Hope that makes sense. Ok, I'm over this rant. I was able to get the food still reasonably warm to Ventura County. This is my first vegan meal, ever, and I was shocked at how well they were able to duplicate the sweet hickory taste of bacon and egg texture. Had my doubts about vegan cheese, but the cashew richness in the Daiya is terrific! The roasted potatoes are some of the better ones I've had in Long Beach. When they first opened I used to get their strawberry cake because it was so good but now they let it sit in the fridge and it gets hard and gross and the overall flavor is just not there. Wow. My wife and I really love Grain Cafe and have always had good experiences when dining in. However, we just ordered delivery and oh man is it bad. I decided to try the "vegetables of the day" in a build your own bowl, and that was a big mistake. They came basically uncooked/partially steamed? I don't know what they are, but they're bland, boring, and inedible. So I guess I'll be dining on the semi-cooked black beans and garlicky greens. Again, we love this place when dining in, but beware when ordering for delivery. UPDATE: We just ordered Grain Cafe again to give them another shot and were delivered inedible food! I am not a vegan! If I was forced to be one I would frequent here often! This place is in a quiet area on the other side of the 4th street madness, so finding parking isnt too bad. Customer service was awesome. Patient polite and knowledgeable. The prices are more than I want to spend but 4th street LB AND vegan= pricey. We ordered the guacamole with chips, the taco special, and we got a slice of cake as we were celebrating my friends bday. The guacamole was the best thing since sliced bread. My only complaint is the small amount we received for the cost. Creamy and flavorful guacamole with what I think was house made tortilla chips. So good! The tacos were really good considering it lacked animals. Lol. All 3....pollo, asada, and carnitas inspired tacos had so much flavor I didn't miss the meat at all. Not to mention how light I felt afterwards. On to the amazing cake! $6 slice....free because the waitress noticed we were celebrating a birthday. Super nice! Maybe it was an off night but it was really bad. The employee tried to tell me the deluxe burger wasn't good..but I ordered it anyways because of the reviews. He was right! Very plain, bland and had a weird artificial smoke flavor. If you get it keep the smoked bacon tempeh out. And at least fill the dressing containers with dressing. There was a little under a half in these tiny plastic containers..see pic. For a wrap and a burger to be $30...it better be good! This is based completely on a Door Dash experience. I spent a super lazy day hanging out with a friend of 30+ years and we decided to do nothing and order in for lunch. This was the first time I have tried Grain Cafe and it was so good. We both ordered the club sandwich with avocado and the side of potatoes. When it was delivered the food looked delicious and then taking a bite I was so happy, the crunch of the toasted bread and what ever that smoky sweet flavor of the tempeh bacon was amazing. I am not generally a huge fan of tempeh often it is under seasoned and kinda dry. This experience as well as a few thers have made me second guess this thought and I am all in on the tempeh. The potatoes were well seasoned and really very well seasoned and a nice change from standard fries.
