Let me start by saying I have eaten at this restaurant many times. Every time I've eaten there the food has been delicious. Unfortunately they have changed the patty for the lamb burger. It's not as flavorful as the past lamb burger . I gave 2 stars due to lamb burger disappoinment, but Greek salad was delicious. Overall still worth a visit, but the lamb burger change was not a good move . I would like them to go back to the original lamb burger as it was full of flavor when compared to what is served now. My wife and I vistited the Grape Leaf on Saturday afternoon (5/5/12) around 3:00pm. We were both in the mood for some good Med food...and the Grape Leaf doesn't disappoint on that count. The food is great and reasonably priced. However, there are two problems with this restaurant that merit it receiving only two stars. First, the staff was very impatient and rude. We were made to feel that they really had better things (like talking among themselves) to do than take our order. And the waitress even rolled her eyes at my wife when she had a question about the menu. Also, forget about ever receiving a beverage refill....it ain't gonna happen. We were also party to rude and snide comments the wait staff were making among themselves about other tables they were waiting. Second, is a cleanliness issue. Clearly the floor had not been swept in several days. Additionally, there were boxes of styrofoam "take out" supplies stacked on the serving floor...requiring customers to walk around the maze to be seated. To sum up - The food is good. Hummus plate, really excellent and huge! falafel sandwich - organic chickpeas, fava beans, herbs, spices, tomato, cucumber, romaine, served with tahini. The sandwich is decently sized, but then you get two sides (I opted for the pearl couscous with vegetables and greek salad). It was just too much and I left much of the two sides uneaten. I haven't lived in Louisville for about 10 years, but was going to be there visiting family so I said "OMG!! I completely forgot about this place" and I bought the deal. I brought my parents for lunch right before they took me to the airport to leave. It was NOTHING like I remembered. The ambiance was totally different~~for the better. Everything was so inviting and warm and really felt spacious AND cozy at the same time. Our server was really great. He was very helpful and kept everything timed perfectly so I was not late to the airport. The food was very good. My only complaint~~if it's even legit, the portions are just way too big. I know most people would say this is great, but I would still pay the same price for about 2/3 the amount of food. Reasonable prices, great environment, friendly staff, flavorful food. I got chicken shawarma and was hugely impressed with it. I could also eat about 15 helpings of the hummus with hot sauce (get it with carrots, it's delicious). I would pass on the rice as I found it a bit bland, and I did have to get extra hot sauce since the house made is not super spicy or particularly flavorful. If you're willing to deal with what I would distinctly qualify as "French service" (i.e. the impression that the servers have better things to do than actually wait on your table AND that you are a bit of an inconvenience for wanting something to eat and drink) then I highly recommend the Grape Leaf. While the service leaves much to be desired, the expansive menu more than makes up for it. I picked to go to this restaurant because I was craving some dolmas and ended up having the most delicious vegetarian moussaka. I have been back a second time and found the babronia to also be delicious. I know that when I go back, I won't be disappointed by the main dish I end up picking. I would, however, skip the baklava as the day I tried it they were incredibly dry which was disappointing. read more

Stopped in on a quiet Sunday night and ordered stuffed grape leaves, chicken kebab and baklava. Our server seemed to have a pace that was more fast food than leisurely Sunday dinner - she seemed to be pushing us through slightly and definitely did not seem happy to be there. The food was almost entirely unmemorable. The spice on the chicken was good, but it was quite dry. The baklava was also a bit on the dry side. The side of rice and couscous came with some mostly unseasoned steamed veggies. For any entree over ten dollars, I expect a much higher quality. The one thing that saved this from a two-star review was the fact that my wife and I shared the kebab entree and they graciously split the single entree between two plates for us and - I think - gave us full portion of the side carbs and veggies each. Exceptional food here! I tried the Grape Leaf for the first time last week, and I was incredibly satisfied. I came with my sister, as she highly recommended the place, and we sat outside on the patio. The food here was flavorful. Each entree comes with two sides, which is such a good deal (my meal was only $10.25). I got the samosas with a side of pearl cous cous with vegetables and house fries. I was overwhelmingly pleased with every component of my meal. The samosas had a delectable taste with a tiny bit of spice and the cous cous was appetizing as well. The house fries were divine - think a higher-end version of Rally's fries. My sister got the falafel sandwich.. lets just say, I had to utilize extreme self-control to not completely engulf her entire sandwich when she offered me a bite. Overall I was really pleased with my experience at the Grape Leaf. The only con I could note was the inside of the restaurant. Although we ate outside, we briefly walked through the interior of the restaurant which seemed a bit sad. read more

My first time trying the Grape Leaf after a recommendation from a friend. This was one of the better restaurants in the area. The food was very good. My reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that I waited quite a while to get seated and then a long time to order. I wanted appetizers and dinner. However after the appetizer and a glass of wine, I was completely full. I looked around at the fiid that was being served and it all seemed delicious. Great service. The hummus is terrific and the Greek salad is pretty good. However, the grilled veggies and rice cannot be beat! Portions are large and the menu is too. My boyfriend and I came to Grape leaf for lunch on a Thursday. It's safe to say business was a little slow there was only one other couple eating at this time. The ambiance looked and felt strange inside so we opted to sit outside. However, I love their patio. I saw the girl at the table next to me had a frozen pomegranate lemonade with mint leaves in it so I went out on a limb and ordered it - talk about YUM. We then ordered the samosas and hummus as appetizers, both of which were satisfying. We both ordered lamb gyros with saffron rice as our meals. Ohhhhhh yeah. I can only give it 4 because service was a little on the slow side but otherwise it was stellar. Atmosphere is lovely, warm, even artistic but very laid back. Service was very friendly and helpful and I'm so glad I took the suggestion on the dish I ordered. The Babronia over the moussaka any day, I think. The dish came out piping hot, full of well balanced, robust and not overpowering flavor in a generous portion. The pita on the side with the fresh tahini was a real treat! My cohort had the Vegetable Bryani which I tried and was impressed by the flavor, texture, and depth. I will say that the side of green beans, while tasty, were not really impressive. I'll probably try something else next time since they were good, not awesome like the rest. Finally, our salads which came out first were slightly slow and the delivery of the food felt like much too long to wait, to me. The house made dressing for the house salad was wonderful. My husband and I decided to try The Grape Leaf because we were told they have many vegan options. I always study the menu before going to a restaurant and it's true, there are several vegan options! We ordered the Hummus for staters and it was HUGE! I should have just had that for my meal, it was really big. The Hummus was tasty and it came with warm and grilled pita bread. I really liked it however found it a bit oily for my taste. I ordered the Babronia, from the Vegetarian Section, but you do need to inform your waitress if you're vegan otherwise you'll get Tzatziki sauce. For the vegan option you get a Tahini, which is good. The Babronia had, red kidney beans, mushrooms, garlic, carrots, onions, squash, and red bell peppers. I chose the Cauliflower Saffron Basmati Rice for my side. The portion was big, way too big! The flavor was good but the veggies were cooked to a mush. I like my carrots and squash to have a snap and a crunch. I could smash the squash with my fork. Maybe it's because it was stew like, but again it's not to my liking. My husband got the Vegetable Bryani, it had ginger, garlic, tomato, cilantro, seasonal vegetables, spices and tahini. He also liked the flavors but agreed the veggies were too mushy. His favorite part was his side, Pearl Cous Cous with vegetables. It was super tasty and fresh. Because our meals were so large we did not finish them. We also did not take them home. You do not see many restaurant reviews from me because I'd rather eat at home. My food is better, what can I say?! I'm not sure if we will be back unless we are meeting friends or family. But, I do appreciate the vegan options! read more

Okay, here's the thing about this place. It probably deserves 2 stars for the service--which is down right poopy sometimes. But the food is delicious and actually deserves a 4. The hummus is creamy and wonderful. The house Mediterranean salad is something that I could eat every day for the rest of my life. Every entree I have tried has been delectable --the gyros, the chicken and rice, the lentils, lamb--all great!! To top it off, it is BYOB. I'd suggest bringing a nice bottle of wine to complete your mean, you won't regret it. Now onto the service. It's crap. Really. Which is unfortunate considering how delicious the food is. In all the times that I have eaten here, I have had one server that could be described as "nice and polite." Everyone else has been surely, if not impolite at times. They consistently come off as apathetic. Not so great when you want to enjoy a nice night out. The service can also be really slow, especially around dinner time. Our waiter came to our table enough times to take our orders and deliver our food. That's it. With this in mind, I would still suggest going here --the food is too good to pass up. I'm usually skeptical of Greek restaurants but this one has changed my mind. Now, it is one of my favorite restaurants in Louisville. A friend took me at this place to show why it's the best in Louisville. Boy, she is right on the money. Many looks good on the menu so I decided to go with Tenderloin Beef, as soon as I took a bite, I was the quietest person in the restaurant until I finished. Yes, I wanted to lick the whole plate but I didn't think it was appropriate (oh well). The service was excellent, very friendly. The place is very nice, cleaned and well-organized. The only downsize about the place is the napkins, though but it does not affect the rating, too tough. It hurts a little. Just maybe these two bad napkins. Nevertheless, I will be back. read more

It's nice to know with all of the restaurants in Louisville you can stop by here any time and not have a huge wait. They may not have alcohol, but they also don't charge for bottle service. The quality and taste of the food is unbeatable. I usually get chicken kabob with cous cous. I've tried other items as well but its my favorite. The honey mustard dipping sauce pairs perfectly with the chicken and cous cous w/ vegetables. The greek salad has the perfect amount of dressing. If you haven't been you should. It's hard at times to find this combination and the food is authentic and prepared with amazing attention to detail. The ingredients are fresh and spiced to perfection. I want to point out, up front, that I received some of the most puzzlingly fragrant gas from this meal. I'm certain the girlfriend was not happy, but it made for some interesting olfactory sensations for me this morning... Key point: Parking is a pain in the ass. So bring a healthy pile of patience with you when driving there. The service was actually really good. Neither the water nor the iced tea were ever empty for my date or I (which is a really rare event). I have absolutely no complaints on the service whatsoever. The food seemed a bit off. Note that it's NOT Greek traditional - it draws on a lot of the flavors throughout the Mediterranean. But almost everything was missing a spice or something. The baba ghanoush needed some hot sauce or something (it actually tasted better with a little hot sauce when I ate the leftovers). The goat dish was quite good, but needed to be a bit hotter (spice-wise). The mixed dish I had was fine, but I've had better lamb in a lot of other locations. We split the Mezza Sampler (hummus, baba ghanouge, spanakopita) and the Lamb Burger with house fries. We couldn't get enough of the hummus and baba ghanouge, and still managed to have room to devour our burger. Asking them to add feta cheese to the burger was an incredible, last minute decision. Exceptional Mediterranean food! We started with hummus, delicious! Fresh and had a small amount of mild heat pepper as a relish. Nice kick, we had the warm pita with it. I love Mediterranean food and whenever I'm in Louisville I have to eat it from at least one place during a visit. We placed an order over the phone for pick up. We ordered 2 chicken gyros and were pleasantly surprised to each get 2 sides with the meal. We also ordered hummus as an appetizer. There was SO much food. For $26 I was shocked by the ginormous side serving of rice, a huge gyro with plenty tsaziki sauce, and my "side" salad. The salad was so big that I saved it for lunch today. Overall everything was hit and fresh. I have no complaints about flavor. I feel like the chicken breast in the gyro wasn't 100% fresh but I ate the entire thing regardless. I am always blown away with each dish I try. This Mediterranean food is so fresh and a good portion for the price. The Greek side salad I had was so good, with olives and avocado to top it off. Definitely not impressed with this place. I went here with a large group, and we called ahead of time to make sure they could accommodate us. The server took our orders and then promptly disappeared for at least 10 minutes. It's also important to point out that a lot of the food we wanted to order wasn't even available. I wanted byrani rice as a side...not available. My husband wanted the seafood kabob....the only seafood they had left was salmon. My husband also ordered some mint tea, which took forever to come out. Other people ordered lentil soup to start, and I ordered chicken stew. I specifically told the server to bring it out before my main meal. Well the lentil soups came out, but not my chicken stew. I asked if my stew was coming soon, to which the server told me "that comes out with your entree." I told her no, I asked for it before my entree. She said "oh, that's right. Well it'll be awhile to get that prepared." About 10 minutes later it finally arrived. The reason this place got even 2 stars is because the stew was so good. It was piping hot and the flavors were delicious. The rice that came on the side was also fantastic. Fast forward to MUCH later and our entrees came out. The server had no idea which meal went to who. She ended up giving my balsamic chicken to my mother in law, which had a side of quinoa I was looking forward to. My mother in law started eating it, and by the time we realized she made the mistake, I was eating my balsamic chicken and wondering where my quinoa was. I pointed it out to the server, who casually said "oh that's right. I'll get you some quinoa." That took awhile to come also. Now on to my meal, the balsamic chicken. The server recommended it, and I'm not sure why. The flavor was weird and very salty. The pieces of chicken were tough - a few pieces were so tough I couldn't even eat them. The lentils and rice were flavorless, along with the quinoa. Not even remotely impressed. Others seemed to have the same opinions of their food. We waited forever for this food, and it wasn't even that good. After all was said and done, the server didn't offer any apologies or anything. I will never come back to this restaurant. Babaghanouj: This dish feels light, fresh and healthier than ordering hummus. I'm not too familiar with babaghanouj, but it gives off a mild taste with an interesting aroma that I can only describe as smokey with a nutty background. At first bite, I wasn't very hyped, but you quickly acquire a taste for it and it becomes kind of addicting. Great appetizer! Chicken Gyro: My favorite food in the world and the Grape Leaf definitely delivers! Pita bread tastes authentic. Vegetables are fresh and plentiful. Chicken as tender and savory as it gets.
