My first time here‼ AMBIANCE: It was very quiet in the restaurant. Not necessarily and positive or a negative. We arrived at 11:30 and it was a decent amount of people there, but not crowded at all to say we dined during the lunch hour. FOOD WAIT TIME: Once we ordered, our food came out in about 10-15 minutes. SERVER: I do not remember her name, but she was really good and very patient. OVERALL WAIT TIME: Overall, we sat right down so we did not wait at all to be seated which Is a plus. RATING: Out of 5 stars, I give 4. Mainly because my tea was an Arnold Palmer. The two times it was empty and I said, "no (to people trying to refill it with regular tea) it's an AP" to the other waiters and waitresses who were helping my server, I never got a refill on it until the manager (on his own) came by to remove our plates from the table. He's the only one who asked if I wanted another and who actually brought it. ANYTHING ELSE: We visited your establishment during Houston's Restaurant Week. Almost no vegetarian options at this place. I dinned here to celebrate a friend's birthday and found the ambiance enjoyable. However, the food was only decent. I asked the waiter for anything vegetarian since nothing was listed on the dinner menu. He pointed to the halved chicken and said that could be made vegetarian. What came out was a few slices of avocado topped with crispy tortilla chip slices and salsa and a bed of corn on the side. Mediocre for a "fancy place" but at least it was only $13. I do have to give a thumbs up for the fairly extensive "by the glass" wine list! This restaurant is a great spot in Downtown Houston. I ate at the bar and Maranda was the bartender that night. I had the lobster mac, a glass of wine, and a chocolate martini for dessert. The location of this place is the best quality. Discovery Green is such a great addition to intercity Houston, and diners are able to enjoy the park from the comfort of a restaurant. First note, valet costs $8.00 and is not complimentary. (I think I got spoiled on the ones that ARE complimentary, and was caught off guard to the point where I went to an ATM to get some more money.) Once entering the restaurant, I was again taken aback by the high volume of noise inside. A large group of over 100 people must have met together for happy hour, and the bar is right by the host stand. Due to the high ceilings combined with the shear volume, the host had and I had to yell and lean forward to hear one another. As we walked through the dining room, the noise subsided so we could hear one another speak but still at loud volumes. The Houston Restaurant Week menu did not sound appealing to me (all of the on-line choices were not available on Friday night), so I ordered off the regular menu while the other 3 people tried the HRW choices. Appetizers ordered at our table were the individual portion of chips, queso, guac, and salsa, ceviche, and The Grove picnic platter. On the picnic platter a slice of pate still had the plastic on the bottom like it had been plopped out of the container; is that how it is supposed to be? I've never had it served that way. For the entrees we had 2 orders of seared ahi tuna, salmon, and the vegetable skewers. The salmon was the best of the trio, the other two were ok. The dessert was such a bummer I don't even remember them. Everything we ate was mediocre; the quality was just not there. Someone I know made the comment that maybe a government organization is handling the food service, and I would not be surprised. Honestly I was kind of embarrassed for Houston to have such a nice park and the oportunity to have an unique restaurant featured in the middle of it but ruin it with the food. Houston has great food, and The Grove's food is miserable. This may be a good spot to meet someone for drinks after work, but probably only if you get there early. read more

The first thing you notice when entering is the beautiful scenery around this place. One entire glass wall faces the well lit trees that line Discovery Green Park. With the natural feel of the decor it makes for a very romantic place. This is the only good thing I can say. We were given a new waiter who said it was his first day. Even though we were patient and he gave it his all but the service was sub par. New wait staff should not be put on the dining floor alone unless they are fully trained. He was suggesting items that clearly he had never tasted. Also, he was unsure of how things were prepared and if any substitutions could be made. Now for the food. Oh the poor pitiful food. We live across the street from The Grove and give it a try once a year to see if it has improved. Well, the answer is NO! We started with the fish cake appetizer. They came out burnt. My son ordered the special which was Pork Riblets. They were overcooked too. Hard and chewy. Next was the Mac and Cheese with mushrooms. The pasta so overcooked it was nothing but mush. The charred sweet potatoes was dry and tasteless. We left there as hungry as when we walked in. What a waste of a great location. read more

This is one of my favorite places for happy hour in downtown. The decoration and openness of the restaurant is absolutely beautiful. With few times there during happy hour.. the food was excellent and special.. very well presented and tasty. The drinks are good and with very good price tag. Beet hummus: yummy! I would actually give this place 4.5 stars. A few friends and I visited The Grove yesterday for our first Houston Restaurant Week brunch this month. Right off the bat, we didn't like the parking situation. That's what I take off half a star for. They've managed to turn this terribly TINY parking lot into a valet service where they drive your car 5 footsteps away and charge $8 for it. The street parking is difficult because of discovery green being so close by, so people don't have much of a choice but to valet. The food was very delicious and the mimosas were fantastic. I had the chicken pozole for the appetizer, braised beef for the second course, and the Nutella sticky bun for dessert. All of it was perfect. Our waiter was friendly, knowledgable and for the most part fast. Towards the end, we were sitting with empty glasses waiting to be filled up before the cutoff time of 3pm for the bottomless mimosas. The atmosphere of the place is very cute and it's spacious. All in all, money very well spent. I would definitely visit again! read more

Came here the other day for a Sundown event with friends after work as a "happy hour". It was a great atmosphere minus the awkward DJ music that made it hard to enjoy the conversation I was having with my friends- I felt like I had to yell to talk to the person next to me. It was very well organized and was nice to sit outside on the terrace with couches and chairs so that we could relax. I think the service could have been more attentive considering we all got our own drinks and food; all they needed to do was clear glasses and plates in a timely matter and that was slightly lacking. This particular event was $20 for a flight of 4 craft beers (which I did not enjoy but that is most likely my matter of taste as I like dark beers that are less hoppy) and food paired with the beers. I really enjoyed a selection of the food and even though I liked the food, it was a bit spicy to eat in large volumes. I honestly think for the quality of beer and food, it was maybe worth $12 to $15. I would come back here in the future but I'm skeptical about paying high prices for medium level service, taste, and quantity. read more

My boyfriend tried to take me here for NYE but there were no reservations available so I was quite please when a friend suggested this one night for a girls' night out. When I told another friend where I was going that night, all he had to say was that the view was nice. And boy was he right. The restaurant was beautiful and the decor very chic. Our waiter, and I don't even have a name because he never greeted us, literally threw the menus on our table and walked away. We waited 15 minutes and eventually had to ask for our waiter when he never came by to get our drink orders. When he finally appeared, we ordered everything at once. This included 3 drinks, 3 appetizers, 1 soup, 2 salads, and 3 entrees. Of course he screwed up our order when he repeated it back to us because he never even made eye contact with us once! We waited another 10-15 minutes to get our drinks, which had been watered down by that point. The 3 appetizers we ordered were the hummus plate, quail, and artichokes. The hummus plate was huge with a variety of vegetables. Very tasty and fresh. The artichokes were also very good. I don't have anything to say about the quail because I don't like quail. We also ordered the soup, arugula + pear salad, and the house salad. I can't remember what the soup of the day was but it was good. The arugula + pear salad was delicious. I just asked my friend about her house salad and she "disgusting". Anything positive about this restaurant stops here. For entrees, we ordered the soft shell crab tacos and lamb, cooked medium. The lamb came out like jerky. When we returned it, the waiter said, "You wanted medium. This is medium." They did take take charge off our bill though. The tacos were meh. Overall, the food wasn't all that great but what killed it was our waiter. Another table that was being served by him had the same experience. The decor is so cute here that I want to give it 5 stars but unfortunately the food didn't do it justice. I've been here on 2 different occasions. 1) my sisters wedding rehearsal dinner. It was pretty yummy but the undercooked salmon wasn't for my taste buds. 2) I came here on a random night with family wanting to try it again since the rehearsal dinner. I ordered the soft shell crab BLT. It sounds interesting and delicious, right? Whatever came out was not what I expected. A white hamburger bun was the awful part. maybe a BLT is nothing fancy but soft shell crab is! It should have been on egg bread or perhaps ciabatta. The sandwich was tasty but the burger bun made it look cheap. I wish this place was better. read more

I took my married friends here recently for Sunday Brunch. One word: Brilliant!! There isn't a whole lot that needs to be said about this spot; but maybe this will create a fundamental picture: - Trendy - Clean - Breezy - Relaxing - Tasty - Fun It's practically on Discovery Green; and that alone is part of its appeal. The last several weekends have been beautiful; and this is where I have been spending a few of them. The Brunch menu has your typical egg dishes, brioche french toast, sandwhiches, and of course Mimosa's. I'm in love with the The Grove Eggs Benedict It's just the perfect portion of food, and light enough for the health conscious but at the same time filling. Appetizer on this beautful day of brunching: Dustin's Farm Deviled Yard Eggs The presentation alone makes the meal enjoyable. Not the typical deviled eggs that have that rubbery feel from being out too long; rather you can taste the freshness right away. My friend got himself the Burgar; and let me just say his silent serene expression said it all. Don't forget to try the Mango Mimosa or Bloody Mary. Both are strong but not to the point it ruins your meal. Last but not least; take your meal out on the patio where you can listen to live music (if you're lucky) and bask under the shade of all the trees around you. The Grove is set is Discovery Green in Downtown Houston. We didn't come here to eat really but wanted to enjoy the nice view and drinks. We sat on the patio as the Houston summer gave us a break from all the humidity. There were some flies around if you sit near the bushes but if you sit at a table closer to the building they won't bother you so much. I drank the Cucumber Rose all night and it is just awesome. It's a mixture of Gin, Cucumber and Rose petals and it is something I will recommend everyone trying. It is a bit expensive at $9 but totally worth it. My friend had the Cinnamon Lychee Martini and that was pretty good. She also had the Ginger margarita which had a very nice kick at the end. We ended up getting one of the appetizers of the day as the drinks soaked to our veins and we needed a bite to help us manage our minor intoxication. We ordered the Eggplant Caponata and it was very delicious. I need to learn how to make this at home. It was a delight to the tastebuds. The view here is awesome and it's a very nice place inside and out. I would recommend it to anyone in the downtown area. The service was great and I will be coming back. Now if only they would re-open the treehouse to the public (it's private events only now) and then this place would be a place I would come back to more often as those views are a rarity in the Houston area. read more

The difference in a half star is almost always service related. I found this 3 1/2 star establishment to be no different. Immediately upon taking our seat our waiter informs us that they didn't have their top three seafood dishes available. We would be told that a desired reserve bottle of of wine was also unavailable as well. When asked if we could get a reasonable equivalent bottle for the same price, due to this fact, we were told "no" by the owner, with no comparable alternative offered at a discount. The owner, who was obviously present, didn't bother to stop by our table either. I don't recall being told "no" this many times during one dinning experience. To be fair the food was good. I especially liked the crab mac & cheese and the roasted chicken dishes. However, I don't think I will be making any plans to return as their are too many nice restaurants in this city where one can "have their cake and eat it to". read more

Although the pickled shrimp was one of the best I've had, the service was the worst I've ever had. I've been meaning to come here for a couple years. It's just over priced for the mediocre food and service. The gratuity add on is absolutely ridiculous. For the shitty service, he DID NOT deserve a $24 tip! I don't remember his name but if I did, I would write it. We came to celebrate a birthday. Waited 30 mins for the rest of the guests arrived while we ordered drinks. Mind you, the drinks arrived 20 mins after the other guests arrived. We waited 50 mins in total just to receive our waters/wines. In the beginning it was only 8 of us, so I would imagine, they could have brought something. When we finally got our drinks, we ordered out appetizer and entrées. Our appetizers came 30 mins after and 20 mins following, came out entrees. Note we've been here for an hour and 40 mins and we just now got our food. He failed to refill my water a couple times. Now it would be different if the restaurant was at all busy. Including us, there were only 6 tables!! The food was expensive, not worth it for the wait and cost. This is my 2nd year venturing back to The Grove for HRW and I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE their Redfish BLT sandwich on their lunch menu! I'm just drooling thinking about that samich (yes, I said samich). It was so good that I'm going back soon to inhale it again. Ha! Besides the food, the service was excellent. I tell ya, I seem to land the nicest waiters wherever I go! Anywho, definitely check this spot out! Tips: 1. If going for lunch time, go around 11am or you will find yourself in the thick of the lunch crowd. This place typically fills up fairly quickly but settles down after 1pm. 2. It's located right next to Discovery Green. You can literally see it while sitting inside the restaurant enjoying your meal. 3. They offer valet ($8) or you can pay a little less by parking on the side of the street located on the same side as the restaurant. read more

Went a few weeks ago for the 3rd or 4th time. Pretty setting. Like the menu. Service reasonable if not very sophisticated. My gripe is a biggy. I ordered half a roast chicken for $19.00 and it was awful. Terribly, inexcusably dry and overcooked. Had a wonderful lunch today in a beautiful and classy setting. The Grove sits downtown Houston within a small but majestic grove of oaks. The restaurant is clean and upscale. I had the hanger steak for lunch topped with fresh guacamole. I've added pictures of my lunch but also that of my friends who were equally impressed with their lunches. One had a entire salmon salad and said the salmon was wonderful. The other lunch was eggs Benedict covered with lump crab meat. It looked like artwork and I was told it tasted great. Disappointed I rolled in around 9pm after a short walk from the hotel across the street. The inside was very open with high ceilings making it look appealing to the eye. Today was a little different of a dinner experience then I'm used to due to me trying to become healthier and cutting down on drinking. With that being said here is my review. I ended up ordering the seared halibut with rib meat and the dish arrived very quickly. The dish displayed well and I was excited to eat it. Once I dove into it I found that the rib meat was cold and burnt with little taste. I then dove into the halibut which ended up tasting just as bad with an over powering sauce. The bar tender said about five words to me and was more interested in closing up shop for the night. I was hoping to watch the football game at the bar since I was by myself but the TVs are placed in an odd location making it tough to sit anywhere at the bar and watch the game. read more

If you could rate this place by the decor, ambiance, and the menu alone, The Grove would rate 5 stars. However, the service is spotty and the food isn't up to snuff. The Duck Meatloaf sounds great, and perhaps it would have been great if it weren't cold coming out of the kitchen. The whole appeal of The Grove, like Discovery Green itself, is to allow you to pretend for a moment that you're not in the middle of Houston, but in someplace like NYC. Well, at The Grove, you're paying NYC prices, sitting inside a beautiful room... and getting lousy food. On the other hand, The Treehouse upstairs is great. The chill music on the deck, the relaxed atmosphere, and the pomegranate margaritas are fantastic. If you want a terrific date, eat somewhere else downtown, walk around Discovery Green, and then spend the evening on the deck at The Treehouse. read more

The first thing you'll notice is the amazing architecture and interior design of this place. It's modern and cozy yet open. I originally thought I wanted to sit outside but the inside lets so much natural light in that you can still get that feel without even sitting outside. I will say some of the tables are a little too close together and the tables for 2 are quite small. I was amazed by on the menu was all the LOCAL food choices and fantastic wine list! For the appetizer, I had the Casserole of Crab w/ Corn | Fennel & Parsley Salad w/ Crushed Bread Topping ($15). It was great, but they only served it with a couple of toast points, you may as well order more of those before it even comes out unless you want to eat the rest with a spoon! For the entree, I had the Grilled Salmon Salad w/ Mediterranean Style Chick Peas Shaved Carrots & Fennel: Herb Aioli ($15) It was cooked to perfection (no overdone) and a perfect portion. It was our wedding anniversary so my husband and I thought we'd give this restaurant a try. The only thing I will give this place credit for is its ambiance and view. I think I am being generous for giving two stars considering the food and service was mediocre at best. To start our night off, we ordered a couple of cocktails--a crown on the rocks and some kind of pineapple concoction. It took an eternity for the drinks to come out and when they did, we stared at each other in a bit of shock. The drinks came out in what appeared to be shot glasses. We thought it was something different and really didn't think much about it. My husband really likes deviled eggs so we ordered that as an appetizer. Blech!!! The "yolk" part of it tasted a bit sour and so put a bad taste in our mouth. I think the best part of my meal was the house salad. My ribeye---which I ordered medium rare---came out medium so I asked for them to remake me another one. Both ribeyes had so much marble fat in them that I had to dig for some actual meat. My husband's halibut was very bland. The waitress's service was horrible. She didn't bother checking on our drinks and when we got our second round, his glass which the crown on the rocks came in was twice the size of the first! She tried to justify it by saying the bartender was compensating for the wait but when I looked across at another table, their glasses for their cocktails were much bigger than the first ones we got our drinks in. I was in Houston for a convention at the Hilton, and this place was right across the street in the park which is a neat location, and certainly convenient. We knew it would be crowded but braved it anyway for a Friday lunch at 12pm with about 8 people. We were initially told a 30+ minute wait, but were pleased to get in within 15 minutes! I really enjoyed my salad - the gulf shrimp and crab salad with chili oil dressing - and everyone else seemed to really enjoy their meals as well. The dressing was a *little* heavy, so if you go, consider asking for it on the side. The fried pickle appetizer was passed around my table, and as someone who has never had them before, I loved them. I have to write for my one friend - she's vegan, which is pretty tough to pull off in Texas. They created a delicious meal for her that was Mexican inspired and subbed out chicken in the dish with avocado. If you're vegan, ask! This wasn't on the menu, but they were more than accommodating. read more

Staring out of our Hilton Americas hotel room, we see The Grove, literally right in front of us. Looks like a classy place, so we try it. The inside is nice, lots of very woody-contemporary decor, very high ceilings, and a pretty big banquet/reception area in back. It was a breezy Saturday afternoon, so we asked to be seated on the patio, where tables were available. That was the best place to sit! Lots of people watching, since it's right smack in the middle of Discovery Green Park. Lunch menu wasn't too extensive, but I figured I couldn't go wrong with a chicken salad sandwich (about $14). It was tasty, but had a few 'creative' spices to it. I just don't like 'sage' or something really pungent in my sandwich...i could have settled with salt/pepper. My hubby ordered skirt steak (lunch portion) and it was $27...a little high for a lunch item. I was in the mood for a mojito, and it was only OK. More simple syrup than Bacardi, and in a tall VERY narrow glass, all for $8.50. The service was excellent. We must have had at least 3 servers delivering food, refilling iced tea, and checking on us every few minutes...thats a big A+! Overall nice place, but a little pricy. I went here for Houston restaurant week. Me and my girls chose this place because its a central location between all of us. OK SO REVIEW: The food was less than mediocre. Do not try their Seafood Linguine Puttanesca: with gulf shrimp, mussels & shaved parmesan, sounds good, BUT stay away at least 50 yards of that. I actually regurgitated the mussel because it tasted like crawfish poop. And i wish i was exaggerating. i almost made my girls hurl.. Same goes for their dessert Apple Tarte Tatin: bourbon caramel & whipped creme franche. You might want to save yourself the trip from the bathroom. Staff was nice, but since i went in the afternoon [not many people there] it seemed like they were lollygagging. The scenery is nice, but i can understand the pain of parking. Valet is $8 WHOA. A little disappointed on this one and it was the service more than the food. This was my 2nd visit. It's a great location for downtown lunch meetings and reasonably priced. On my first visit I was meeting 2 male colleagues for a business meeting. The service was excellent and the food was quite delicious. I decided to come back since it's next to my hotel. I scheduled another lunch meeting but this time, it was a female colleague. The waiter rarely came to our table and didn't say anything when delivering the food. He brought the check and just sat it at the end of the table. He never asked if we'd like dessert or anything. We were then rushed when asked about our ticket. The black credit card book was sitting at the end of the table and had been run by another waiter. It simply needed my signature. The Resturant wasn't even close to being full. The service was down right awful. I've got 2 more days of lunch meetings and they will NOT be here. If they can't treat me with respect, I certainly won't intrust my clients! read more

We went for Houston Restaurant Weeks and had a fantastic dinner! We went with a group so I got to try out several items for each course. Here are the winners: 1st course: Herb Gnocchi- clear winner! I ordered the pear & arugula salad, which was a solid choice as well, but the gnocchi was amazing. 2nd course: Ahi Seared Tuna with Short Ribs on top. The tuna was good, but the short ribs added flavor to it that was ridiculous. Second place went to the filet- seasoned really well and cooked perfectly. 3rd: I was the gold medalist in dessert ordering. I ordered the Texas Pecan & caramel cake. Oh my word. I thought I would have dessert envy of my friends who ordered chocolate cake, since I typically order something chocolate. Nope! This alone is worth making a trip to The Grove. Happy hour drinks... I've only come here to beat the heat and have a prickly pear margarita and another margarita with ginger...crisp, cool, potent, and numbing. A great way to keep your cool in the Houston heat. read more

Best burger in town? Meh. Service slow, burger bun is huge and unnecessary, truffle Parmesan fries aren't very truffley or parmy. Glad I ordered a side of kale, which was decent but also $7. Not coming back. read more
