This was our second time visiting this establishment, and we were so impressed the first time we had to go again, just the two of us. We decided to make it a date night, one night after work. This time we ordered "The Vegas", some sort of Roll with Bacon (yummmm Bacon), and another one with Mango. We're looking forward to going back and trying some different rolls. Our server for the evening was Tam, and although this restaurant was extremely busy this evening, he made sure to keep us happy and content while we waited for our food. While we were waiting for our food, I was looking around, and this is a really clean establishment. After we had finished our appetizers (crab cakes), our food had come out, just like clock work. We have been frequenting Happy Sumo for the last 7 years and always loved their food and the dark Asian modern style of the restaurant. Went there tonight and the food and service were as alway excellent, but the restaurant looks very thread-bare and down right dirty. You look up in the lobby and can see major dust marks on the flat black paint, the furniture is all beat, and the place feels like it hasn't been cared for in too long. I spilled some Sake on the floor (shame on me!) and bent down to wipe it up and almost threw up - and, I've got pretty high tolerance. My wife also said the same thing about her side of the "sticky" table and floor. Again - the food and server were great - but, please step up your game Sumo! We want to keep coming back, but unless things are clean and tight - we wont be back anytime soon. read more

I came here with one of my friends because this was a central location for both of us and she also worked here before. Since she used to work there, our server was one of her friends. The service was good, she was nice, chatted with us, threw in a couple of free drinks (hot tea) and small dishes like side salad and edamame. I actually really want to come back without my friend to see what the service is really like since apparently a lot of people don't like the service here from what I read. We came on a Monday and apparently they had 50% appetizers and maki sushi, which are just really basic sushi rolls (think California roll). Because it was so cheap, we ordered too much food for the both of us, that I did not even get to the sushi. I'm not going to comment on how the sushi was because I ate it about 2 days later (gross, I know). We ordered the ginger tofu, it was pretty good, a hint of spice to it, the Sumo's Dyn-O-Mite which is like a crab and tempura shrimp salad type thing. It has tobiko but we subbed that out for jalapeños. The Dyn-O-Mite was actually very tasty, surprisingly!! Kind of sweet but not too overpowering, definitely unhealthy though. We also got the calamari and that was typical. Note that they let you sub things out or add extras even to the rolls; we added jalapeños to our spicy salmon roll, which tastes pretty spicy for an American restaurant. One last thing about the restaurant is that the ambience is kind of weird, half way through dinner they turned down the lights soooo low and the furniture is black so it seemed like I was in a nightclub minus the loud music even though it's bright and sunny out. I think they try to make it a more intimate experience for consumers but it's kind of annoying. All in all, the food is decent, I prefer Hapa for American fusion sushi but I wouldn't mind coming back since it's close to my parents house. This isn't a really an authentic Japanese sushi restaurant, it's more of an American, throw a bunch of sauce and toppings onto the sushi type of restaurant as well as catered to American people. I'm not really sure why this place has some bad reviews. The restaurant has a nice ambiance and modern decor. The waitstaff were friendly and came with refill drinks before we ran empty without us having to ask. The sushi rolls have the largest proportion of meat compared to the amount of rice that I've seen. Most sushi has so much rice and very little amount of sushi whereas the food here was very filling and you get a lot more sushi than you do rice. The food was served promptly and they have some unique types of specialty rolls. Honestly, we loved this place and will definitely keep coming back. read more

awful experience for such an expensive and fancy looking sushi restaurant. i got the veggie tempura roll and an order of spicy edamame. I had couple of bites of the veg tempura, took the rest home. i hated the spicy edamame. it felt like chilly paste thrown on the steamed edamame. that is exactly what it was. the whole nasty edamame ended up in the garbage. here is a tip, go "borrow" the recipe from 'sushi den'. stop throwing hot chilly paste on things, and call it spicy. its gross. call it gross. the waitress clearly noticed my displeasure in the product, and just asked if i needed a box. FYI, giving someone a box for something doesn't fix the problem. try taking it off the bill, throwing it in your own garbage, and offer me something else to try that is actually good. that is what i would define as better customer service. get out of here with your stupid boxes. i just made this planet a worse place by taking your plastic/Styrofoam box, and throwing it in my garbage. after getting the stupid boxes, i thought it was common sense that one would need a paper bag/plastic bag, but alas. , i had to keep asking for a chop stick, the soy sauce to go, then had to ask for a bag. maybe this waitress should stick to being a hostess. ofcourse i am hurting the planet again. i wish you had paper bags for carryout. nope. plastic. again in the garbage. next lets talk about the ordering. very confusing service when sitting at the sushi bar. wasn't sure if i had to order with the sushi chef or the hostess, who also was working as my waitress too. my sushi chef couldn't speak a lick of English, so his friend had to help him out. which is fine. but, being passed around like a toy, when i am the customer was kinda distressing. i shouldn't have to have 3 people taking one persons order. consider having a floor manager to coordinate your mess. considering the plethora of amazing sushi restaurants in the Denver area, i doubt i will ever go back to this place. what a waste of such a nice decor, and restaurant. no quality in food or service. this place is a waste of time, & money. plus it aims to kill our planet. read more

I usually love coming here but I will never return again after the ridiculous service I got. My friend & I walked in on a Monday afternoon around 2 pm. It was a beautiful day! 80 degrees. So we asked to sit on the patio and a gentleman (who I later learned was the manager) told us that wasn't an option because they hadn't cleaned it yet from the night before. The manager sat us down in a booth with dinner menus. Our server (Amber) came over & we asked for lunch menus. She seemed annoyed as she walked away and said she would grab them. A few minutes later, she was back with our lunch menus, not pleased with our request. My friend & I both ordered the bento boxes. I asked for beef & my friend asked for salmon. 25 minutes later, we got our orders. My friend realized she had gotten chicken instead of her salmon and I realized I needed silverware. We waited 10 minutes after we got our order for our server to come over and ask how things were. It should be noted the dining room was empty. There were 2 other tables that I could see in our section. When our server finally came over, she seemed extremely annoyed with my friends request for her salmon instead of the random chicken she got as well as my request for silverware. She said: "Oh you ordered salmon? I'll fix that." Unapologetically. And walked away. Ten minutes later, I received my silverware and my friend received her salmon shortly after that. My friend had a few bites of her salmon before realizing the middle of it was raw (see attached picture) we waited another 15 minutes for the server to acknowledge us. When she came back around, my friend asked for a manager. The server grabbed the manager and we explained our dissatisfaction with the service. Especially with how rude our server had been to us the whole time we were there. The manager comped our meal but wasn't apologetic about it whatsoever and seemed annoyed like we were the ones at fault. When we were getting up to leave, we asked our server what her name was again. She repeatedly kept answering our questions with her own questions and told us she wasn't allowed to give that information out & told us we didn't need it. We advised her we would ask her manager and she tried to follow us out the door. As soon as we got to the door, we asked the manager of her name and he told us it was Amber in an annoyed tone and moved us along our way out the door. We left with a very bad feelings. Ok, I know I start off almost every review with something along the lines of "we were soooo hungry..." And I swear we eat. Most of the time. When you walk in, you'll immediately notice the dark, ultra sleek, and modern interior and you'll be ashamed to admit that you thought this would be a tad more casual. But why would you assume that you're about to spend $50 for lunch? Before being seated, I inquired about any lunch specials or happy hour specials (it was a Sunday, so it was worth a shot). Our hostess pointed out a page in the menu to the lunch specials (bentos, rolls, and some apps), which we planned to take advantage of. After an overly slow decision process, we settled on 2 lunch specials to split. To our surprise, we were informed lunch specials were only offered Monday-Friday. Well, darn! I guess it's not the hostess' fault that she didn't know... With our beers in hand, we weren't going to leave, so we went back to the drawing board. At least our cold 22 ounces kept our tummies full while we redesigned our lunch. We stuck with something similar to our first choices (similar means in food choice, by no means similar in price). Our "lunch" Bento Box #1: Chicken teriyaki, tempura shrimp and veggies (we are a long ways from Japan, so I'll try my best to forgive them), rice, mini california roll, miso soup, and side salad Rainbow roll: crab and avo topped with more avocado, salmon, yellowtail, tuna, and shrimp (the menu boasts 5 types of sashimi, you do the math). So the damage was $50+! $50 for an average lunch, which if you think about it, would have been $50 for an average dinner. We thought we were going to get the lunch specials (about half the price and I was OK with that), but were foiled by the day of the week. read more

James F and I were "up north" for a record expo and started to get a bit peckish. I didn't have sushi on the brain, but when he suggested this place, I couldn't say no. Happy Sumo is swanky and stylish the moment you walk in: dark interior with dark booths and dark tables. Dark dark dark. I would guess all of the darkness makes for a mysterious date night. In any case, we were sat at a booth in the bar area, very comfy. The menu is huge and has pictures of almost all of the rolls. A bit strange, but this place is in the burbs. There's also no paper and pencils to make your choices. Again, strange, but the burbs, I guess? We opted to start with some warm house sake and miso soup followed up by three rolls and octopus (tako!) sashimi. Everything was really tasty, including the octopus, which was a new try for me. It didn't really have any flavor, just a tough texture. The presentation was lovely as well, contrary to previous reviews. Prices were indeed on point with other sushi joints around town as well. If you find yourself on this side of town and are craving sushi, Happy Sumo is a cool experience. Beautiful restaurant with good food and good service. As I've mentioned before, I feel that sushi fare is best judged by nigiri (rice on bottom, fish on top). It's easier to compare freshness and there is a certain level of continuity since it's not all "dressed up." We got the maguro tuna, shake salmon and unagi eel. All were just ok. Good texture in general but not great flavor. For an appetizer, we got the edamame. It was nicely prepared (we hate it when it's really mushy - gross) but we both agreed that it wasn't fresh. Previously frozen maybe? We got a couple rolls: the Aspen Roll and the Panko Popper. The Aspen Roll was pretty tasty; no complaints. The Panko Popper Roll mostly just tasted like fried panko - there wasn't enough filling to offset the amount of crunchy on the outside. Meh. Lastly, I will note that The Happy Sumo is PRICEY! The nigiri - for the most part - cost about $1 more for two pieces than what you'd pay for the same nearly anywhere else. They also don't have many rolls in the $5-$7 range. Their "lunch specials" are a JOKE!! Not many choices and not a great discount. I won't give them 1 star because it wasn't horrible...but we certainly won't return. read more

I have been here too many times to count either because it's a half-way point to meet my family or I have friends that live in the area. It is right off the highway so it is extremely convenient. First, I love the decor and design of this place. It looks like a fancy, modern, Asian fusion spot. It is a good size so you normally don't have to wait THAT long, except sometimes on Fridays/Saturdays. Now, the food. The sushi is very good. It is great quality and always tatstes fresh. They have a huge selection of all the fancy rolls with cream cheese, fried, etc., so if you are looking for just fresh sushi without all the bells and whistles, this is probably not your spot. I am a big fan of the firecracker roll (siracha on top, such a cool combination), and the Vegas roll (Warning: this is one of the fancy shmancy cream cheese rolls I was talking about). The price points are average for the area. Last night when I was here, we did both notice the rice did NOT hold together very well which is the base of the entire roll, so we were pretty annoyed about that. The rolls completely fell apart. Still, we got 3 rolls that were decent and we were pretty full. I am bummed that they took away the killer deals they used to have if you signed up for their membership through your email. We used to get 50% off our entire bill, ugh! Probably took it away because they had a steady clientel, which I understand, but still- boooo! read more

The final night I was in Denver, my friends took me out to eat. I mentioned sushi at some point during my stay but I told them to pick a spot. We pulled into a newer part of Westminster and found Happy Sumo tucked away in the shopping center. We were immediately seated and the waitresses were very nice to us and were quite the conversationalists. Normally this would be a good thing but when they start forgetting to bring requested items and ignoring our need for water, it gets quite annoying. I noticed one theme throughout the "specialty" rolls. They relied heavily on a modified California roll along with a good amount miscellaneous sauces. If I started stirring the sushi with this sauce, I probably would've ended up with some kind of porridge. Their sashimi was actually delicious. It was easy to get full off of the sushi we ordered but I decided to order the Happy Hawaiian to see how their entrees faired. Out of the standard Yelp.com five star rating, I'd say a two. Temperature was nice and hot. The chicken was cooked thoroughly. However, the taste had much to be desired. I just didn't realize how literal the description was to the actual meal: chicken with pineapple, rice and soy sauce all slapped together. I was looking for a bit of excitement and ended up with driving miss daisy. The dessert we chose consisted of Mochi (Moji) balls. These were amazing. At the end of our meal, I realized our service was fairly slow even with two waitresses serving us and a third one jumped in because we were "fun." The sashimi was great as well as the dessert. The sushi that was made with no sauce was fantastic. I just prefer to taste the sushi rather than having it drown in a concoction of syrups. Drizzle is good. Drowning is not. Since our table was just reminiscing over the past week and other good times, we lost track of time. However, after our lengthy conversations did we notice that our drinks were never refilled and many things were ignored even after our second request. Presentation is key when it comes to specific cuisine like Happy Sumo. The majority of our sushi came out OK. The sashimi came out excellent. Dining atmosphere is club like with cool blues as the theme. Check out the men's restroom if you can. The half egg-shaped urinals are a sight to see. This alone deserves one star. Now only if their service and some food was up to par then I'm sure I would come back again. More than likely, I will not be back. read more

I'm surprised at the negative reviews towards the service, I haven't had any issues with it when I've gone. It is somewhat expensive, especially for the fancier rolls (1 star off for price) but the food is good and they are willing to accommodate food issues (spicy, gluten, etc). The decor is pretty modern and it is dark inside. They will run out of things, so ask when you are seated if the kitchen is out of anything (ie soft-shell crab) before you get excited about a dish. (1 star off for not keeping stocked well) Overall, it's a good place to go after shopping in the area and before a movie. Much better, IMO, than going to Mexican or a Brewery. read more

What happened to Sumo? When we lived nearby this was a go to spot. The sushi was thoughtful and made with care. Everything was fresh and flavorful and always excellent. After a couple years, I believe ownership changed, it has become uninspired and bland. Seriously, how many rolls can you have with shrimp tempura in it? Just looking at the menu should have warned us to the food. The quality has taken a serious nose dive and I wonder if it's even safe. Seeing the prices vs the quality it's apparent the new owners are more concerned with profit than quality and providing a great experience. Sounds harsh but we used to love this place and are leaving with half eaten food on the table and won't be back. I had a party of six there and it couldn't have gone any better. Heather took care of our reservations and visited us a few times during dinner to make sure everything was good. People who had sushi were happy and so were the people who had non-sushi items. Dessert was a big hit, too. I really dig the vibe at this place. It doesn't feel like a Japanese restaurant -- at least not a traditional one. It's funky and fresh and vibrant. It should be a cool place to see and be seen downtown but instead it's up at the Orchard Town Center. That's a big bonus for everyone who lives north of downtown. It's even easily accessible from towns farther north. I love that they have twists on favorites on the sushi menu but I'm a fairly traditional girl when it comes to my fish. I almost always order something basic, and this time I ordered the green mussels and the small sashimi entree. They do the mussels differently than most, chopping them into smaller pieces before putting the yummy goodness on top. To me, it's not as traditional so it wasn't my favorite plate of mussels ever but I liked the change. A fellow diner saw mine and ordered some of his own, so that's a plus. My sashimi plate was perfect. It had tuna, salmon and yellowtail cut in perfect sizes. I'm not really a fan of the "pieces the size of your head" sashimi so these were just right. I ordered shiso and they had it though they didn't put it with the sashimi plate. Again, they're non-traditional. Everyone was stuffed and happy but then a diner ordered dessert. That started the ball rolling. She ordered the fried cheesecake (yes, you heard me) and at one point I thought she might cry it was so good. Other people at the table tried it and also loved it. So that one comes highly recommended. I broke down and ordered some mochi which was the standard variety and very good. They had a lot of flavors to choose from, too. The service was outstanding and everyone got a separate check as we asked. It didn't seem to be a hassle at all. This is definitely a good place for a group because they have a lot of different food and lots of room for lots of people. I came here awhile back for my birthday and had a less than pleasing experience. I was offered a concession to try the restaurant a second time by management. 2nd experience: The restaurant was fairly empty. We received a booth this time. I asked what their spiciest roll was and our server recommended the baja. We did not have soy sauce on our table when the Baja Roll arrived, but our server eventually brought us some when we asked. The server accidentally put in an order for two avalanche rolls, which was not a big deal, she credited us back and apologized. I asked at the beginning if the sushi chefs would be willing to make a random or special order roll, and she informed us that could not be done. Items tried: Baja Roll - 1/2 a star The sriracha on top is the only accent of spicy, the pieces were fairly small and the rice was super cold and over cooked. Playboy Roll - 3 star Probably the most flavorful, 13.75 was the price. The pieces were larger than the Baja and rice wasn't as overcooked. Yay! Avalanche Roll - 2 star The only thing I enjoyed about this role was the sauce on top, the fish didn't taste very fresh to me. Rockstar Roll - 1 star An odd Mexican-esque type combination of fish, green onion, and lime. I couldn't finish it. Beautiful atmosphere and an ideal location.
