I'm going to start this review by saying the dine-in food looks absolutely incredible. It's nice seeing a swanky looking Japanese restaurant, because there isn't a lot around here. However, I ordered take out and was very very underwhelmed. One of the first things I noticed when ordering was how expensive the prices were, but assumed it would be worth it given the looks of this place online. My boyfriend and I each got a bento box ($20 each, outrageous for a few crappy fried items and overall small portions of everything) as well as a 3 roll sushi platter. The sushi was good, but wow the price was not. It tasted no different than your basic, cheap strip mall sushi, and the bento boxes were nothing better than teriyaki you'd get at the food court. Our total was $90 for not much food, and we both finished still feeling hungry. Not to mention they messed up our order! I got a shrimp teriyaki bento box with mixed veggies (which was an up charge) and got chicken teriyaki with tempura veggies. My boyfriend ordered the beef teriyaki bento and also got chicken, with his sides being wrong too. We were so hungry we didn't have the patience to call and complain, so just ate it anyway. Overall, we didn't dislike the taste of anything- but for a $90 small dinner of bad quality food court food, we were pretty disappointed. When dine in opens back up, I'll consider trying it again when we can sit down. From pictures, the food looks a lot better when it's served at the restaurant. read more

Very expensive...even for sushi. Repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive music. It's almost enough to cause a headache (my kids make fun of this place based on it's music, and they LOVE techno). My children love this place's food. The bento boxes are their fav's. I didn't this place it at all until I ate at the sushi bar. We were treated to things off-menu and delicious. It's still a 3 because it's off-the-charts expensive and musically annoying. If you have the money and the tolerance, though, it's worth a shot. read more

Although it may look like a nice resturant we had more than a few problems with everything but the food. When we first started waiting outside they gave us a wait time of 30 minutes but as we kept checking in the wait time stayed the same. After 15 minutes they offered us a patio table. We got to sit down by 7:00 and 1 hour later our pre bottled sodas and waters came out. An hour then passed and our food came at 9:00. One of our party members had to have the server check twice about her food because it wasn't what it said it was on the menu. The food has always been good! Service has always been a little iffy, but nothing to complain about till yesterday. Worst management service ever. If you eat here just pray you get a waiter that can handle multiple orders because the manager was a joke, nasty and rude. :( now to find even better sushi with customer service that cares about the customers. 1 issue- half the table got served food at 6:20. while 4 people had to get theirs finally reorder/ordered at 7:15 (because it was never ordered correctly the first time). We had to wait for it to be made and sent in a To go box because many had to leave. We were there for over 2 hours. Made a reservation with this place over the phone for Christmas Day. Showed up at the restaurant only to find they were closed. I'd understand a place being closed on Christmas Day. However when you call up and specifically ask if they are open, it Is quite aggravating to have plans messed up like this. Cool and modern looking restaurant. They have plenty of options for lunch and dinner. I had their happy sumo yaki soba. Which was actually quite tasty! I recommend the tofu if your feeling a little vegan in your diet. My friends all had sushi, which they also thought was good. Good portion size as well so your not over eatting. Only thing is maybe check the sashimi for bones, which we found one. Other then that give it a go. read more

Food is fantastic the service could use a lot of help! Our server was questioned about the ingredients of something we ordered solely based on what the menu said versus what actually came out. After we questioned her she looked at us and read the menu again and then just said whatever I don't really know what's in there and stomped away defensively. it was ridiculous from a customer service standpoint and poor representation of the brand. The food is sooo good for a reasonable price!! I'm picky with my sushi because it's always a hit or miss in Denver, but I've been here 3 times and I never leave disappointed! I find myself craving the new style jalapeño yellowtail sashimi more often than I want to, and it always hits the spot. Sushi quality is excellent and it is well worth the 30 minute drive. One of the best sushi's I've eaten. And I'm coming from Japan, having live there for a few years. The sashimi is great. It almost melts in your mouth, just like ones in Japan. Haven't tasted American rolls in a long time and honestly, these rolls are out of this world! I would highly recommend this place to anyone craving sushi! They should change their name because representing themselves as Happy Sumo is deceiving. This used to be our favorite sushi restaurant and we would battle rush hour traffic to get here. Today we had the worst sushi that we've experienced in a long time. We complained To the server and was informed it was under new ownership. She said she was going to bring the manager over. We sat for 15 minutes and the manager couldn't be inconvenienced to even make a table stop. We requested our check and paid $80 and left nearly 3/4 if our rolls. We went for a mid afternoon lunch after a movie and were immediately seated in a comfortable round booth. This restaurant has a very modern dark style with lots of gray colors, and cool rock walls. Our server Jan was very quick and personable without rushing us at all. We had the shrimp summer roll with peanut sauce. This is a cold spring roll of rice paper with rice noodles inside, along with cucumber, and shrimp. It's really fresh tasting even if it wants to fall apart as you eat it. I ordered the Baja roll and a Mackerel Nigiri. The Mackerel was delicious. I picked the Baja roll because I wants a roll with shrimp that was spicy; this did not disappoint in that regard. There was a slice of raw jalapeño inside and diced jalapeños on top of the roll, along with Sriracha sauce. I'm looking forward to next time when I can try more of the large sushi roll menu. read more

Disgusting. Would give 0 stars if I could. This is how the food came. They didn't even bother cutting the veggies, and they barely gave 2 pieces of each veggie. They even forgot the rice that came with the dish. The angus steak dish was $28, for some OLD STEAK with STALE noodles. The tempura was separate from the actual vegetables! No flavor in any of the food. The steak tasted like it had been unthawed after being frozen and then thawed again. The entire place smelled like mold and everything felt sticky. I think most of their rolls are not really traditional, more like Happa. So if you like cream cheese, jalapenos and other assorted not quite Japanesey things in your rolls this might be the place for you. The other food is pretty good, we went there for lunch and had their bento box. It's a pretty great deal, you get an entree (teriyaki beef, chicken, or salmon or shrimp tempura), some potstickers, california rolls, and rice, plus salad or miso soup for $9. The inside is pretty impressive, kind modern and a little dark. And I agree with Tricia, the service at this place was great. I don't think I ever looked down and found my water even close to empty and she brought everything we needed quickly. I think I'd go there at least once to check it out. read more

To say that Happy Sumo is the Chili's of sushi, would be an insult to Chili's. I have NEVER been to a worse sushi place, and I have been eating sushi for more than 30 years, and in a variety of cities, states and countries. To call the food that they serve here Japanese, is criminal, and a disservice to those who may live in the northern suburbs and are desirous of expanding their palates with some ethnic food. When we ordered, there were few people in the restaurant. Despite that fact, our order still took 45 minutes to come. The rolls are small and cheap-looking, despite the high price. This company is intentionally misleading customers. I ordered crab and was served imitation crab. When I asked the waitress, she told me the product I was served was "half real and half imitation." First of all, that was not true. The product was 100% imitation crab. Secondly, the menu says "crab" and I should have received what I ordered. When the manager came to our table, he tried to say we were served the wrong roll, but he couldn't tell us which roll we were served and he couldn't find it on the menu. When further questioned about what was in the roll we received, he literally ran away from our table, never to be seen again. Honestly, I think this company is banking on customers not noticing what they're being served. Imitation crab is cheap and real crab is expensive. You do the math. As far as sushi places near Denver go, this one is one of the best I have had the pleasure to enjoy. Classy atmosphere, very clean and professional sushi bar setup. We had a seaweed salad and our drinks within minutes of sitting down. The waitress was top notch and very helpful as well. We really liked the fact that the menu was clear to read and had pictures of the specialty rolls (definitely a nice thought). Then came the sushi. Well prepared and not overly done. Presentation was neat and not simply thrown together. On top of all this, the fish was extremely fresh and slightly chilled -- definitely a desired trait. The wife and I enjoyed four rolls on our visit -- the Avalanche Roll, the Firecracker Roll, the Venus Roll and the Rock Shrimp Roll. All were excellent. Slow service and not enough staff. The sushi itself is pretty good which is why I continue to return. But with each visit I dislike this place more and more. The wait to be seated is always long. There aren't enough servers on hand to seat more tables. The staff isn't rude but they're also not friendly or attentive. The wait for the food is always long no matter how busy they are. My last visit did it for me. The fish was not fresh, I could smell it and it tasted very fishy. Fresh Fish should not smell or taste too fishy. I called and complained to management after my visit because I ended up getting very sick from it and I hadn't eaten anything else all day. I called 3 times the next three days to ask for a refund each time I was told a manager would call me back. Never happened. Stepped in with my Dad and girlfriend right off the plane. We sat at the bar and Chong, our chef, recognized my Dad instantly. He was very funny and gave us valuable advice about what to get and what to stay away from. He even made us some special rolls that weren't on the menu. I'm sure this is partially because he knew Pop, but he seems like a nice enough guy and I'm sure would do the same for anyone. He and his dishes made the experience. The service was decent, but the price only reflects our specific chef in my mind. The rest of the experience simply wasn't that great. Bottom line: if you go, ask for Chong. Being forewarned about the haphazard service, I tried to go in with an open mind. Now the food there is great, but the extreme lack of service casts such a dark cloud over this place that I cannot recommend it to any of my friends. In fact, I will warn them to stay away. The decor is wonderful and I really wanted to like this place. After being seated 2-3 minutes we had to ask for menus, which the manager brought out. I thought things would get better from there but I was wrong. As other problems occurred, our waitress was nowhere to be seen so we had to resort to getting up and walking over to another employee just to get our sticky table wiped down. When our waitress was around we had to ask multiple times for items that should have been delivered with our food. By far, the best service we received all night came from the bus boy who graciously wiped down our table and lit the extinguished candle at the beginning of our night. Despite this being a Saturday night, the best staff was not working and if this was their best staff then management needs get on top of training. If management can get their act together and train their staff on proper service, I think that this place can really take off. The kitchen manager can't seem to keep ticket times under 45 minutes for a simple appetizer. I have to admit I was a little nervous about eating here. The last couple Yelp reviews really hit the place hard on service. We visited on a Saturday evening without reservations and the wait was 45 minutes. After 8:30 things really thin out so you may want to plan for that time frame we arrived at 7PM. The nice part is the beeper system for the restaurant works anywhere at the shopping center so we roamed around for a bit prior to eating. If you don't want to wait ask for a seat at the Sushi bar when we were seated at least 7 seats were open, sad that the hostess didn't offer us that option. They have a small cocktail bar but its not very big only 6 seats so hanging out there is not a great option. The food and service were both excellent, we had the Maki Combo (Tuna, Cali and Vegi Rolls) and the Rock Shrimp Roll both were prepared very well. We also started the meal with the tempura calamari which was excellent! Lyndsey was our server and was attentive and friendly. Dawn had Pearl Saki and I had a Japanese beer (not Sapporo they were out) We also enjoyed a chocolate Lava cake to wrap things up. We eat here about once a month hoping that the service will get better because we like the sushi. There is rarely a hostess up front so you usually either get stuck waiting for someone to do their job, or you have to go find someone and ask them to seat you. The majority of the time, the servers act like you are inconveniencing them. They rarely check back on you. You always run out of beverages. I rarely see a manager around and even when you do, they are also to busy to serve their customers. We decided to give the place one more shot today. Things have not improved much. The place was dirty, no hostess, no manager. We landed up sitting ourselves at the sushi bar because we got tired of waiting. The server just could not believe the horror of what we had done. She asked us to move and I let her know that if they had decided to do their jobs we wouldn't have had to sit ourselves. The sushi was good as usual but it's just not enough to keep us coming back.
