Beyond the food itself, I'd also like to give my appreciation to the male cashier who was incredibly helpful and accommodating, making the experience feel very welcoming. The only downside that I personally experienced within my time there is that it's a bit small and open-ended, so pigeons/rain were able to get in easily. The slaw was in a sample-sized cup, more like a garnish than an actual side dish. As for the fish, one piece was very good. The piece on the bottom was overcooked and hard, nearly burned. Although I've tried this spot before and was slightly underwhelmed, this second visit was a pleasant surprise! I've had coworkers recommend this spot for their Philly cheesesteak and their grilled onions and peppers ALONE, so that is exactly what I tried this time around. It's interesting because I've saw photos of this sandwich in previous reviews, and I always thought it looked a bit small for my liking but when I got it I was happy to see that it was a decent size. It has exactly what you'd think: Shredded Steak cooked with Onions and Peppers with the infamous cheese sauce. It was filling and delicious! We were both craving sandwiches, and when we saw their inviting sign and the fun artwork that decorated the walls, we decided it would be a good spot to stop. Unfortunately, we were both SEVERELY DISAPPOINTED. We paid $14 for the sandwich and nearly $5 for a drink, bringing our total to $21 each. I understand it's San Francisco, but the food should be worth the price if they're going to charge that much. To make matters worse, the cheese on the sandwich was just VILE; it was processed nacho cheese squirted on top, which ruined the whole sandwich, The onions tasted odd and had a weird sweetness that threw off the sandwich even further, and the bread was completely untoasted. The issues didn't stop with the sandwich. My friend ordered lemonade, which was watered down, had barely any ice, and was warm. The service was also disappointing. When we walked in, the staff were all on their phones and didn't even acknowledge us. Later, while we were 'eating,' we saw one of them scrolling on TikTok at the cash register. And the cherry on top of this whole experience, we both had upset stomachs after eating this sandwich. I usually don't write reviews, but this place was just bad and not worth the money. Had a disappointing experience not getting what I ordered from here. I ordered a Philly cheese steak sandwich from an area of the menu that clearly stated all sandwiches came with cole slaw. Nowhere on the menu did it say anything about the calamari coming with fries. Then I took my first bite and realized I was a sucker and got played. This is not the same Hook Fish, they're just pretending. The calamari was dry and rubbery, clearly not freshly made on site. I'm sure they just buy this frozen and throw it into the fryer. What a disappointment and what a waste of money! Do not eat here! There are so many better, local places down the street on Pier 45, where they serve fresh seafood!
