I wish I had checked these reviews before eating here. Seeing the name on the building, I thought the Hook Fish Co, located in the Sunset, opened a new location on the pier. Excited at the prospect of their high quality seafood, I ran in and ordered some calamari. To my surprise, I got a plate full of French fries with some calamari on top. Nowhere on the menu did it say anything about the calamari coming with fries. Then I took my first bite and realized I was a sucker and got played. This is not the same Hook Fish, they're just pretending. The calamari was dry and rubbery, clearly not freshly made on site. I'm sure they just buy this frozen and throw it into the fryer. What a disappointment and what a waste of money! Do not eat here! There are so many better, local places down the street on Pier 45, where they serve fresh seafood! I wish I had gone there, as I had originally planned. I also hope the REAL Hook Fish sues these people and stops them from impersonating a high quality restaurant! read more

So good! I loved it. The food was fresh. I had fish and chips. Can you really go wrong with this in San Francisco? Idk. But this was delicious. The service was fast and we found seats right away. We were in a hurry to pick up food so we decided to go to this place. The line wasn't too long. But it took a while to get our food. Had deep fried clam and fries. It was okay. The fries were average. Not too crispy or soggy. The clams were a little skinny for me. There wasn't really enough sauce too to go with the amount of clam. We also got a fish burger. It was also average. The buns were a bit crispy, fish tasted average, the size was not big... Kinda on the smaller end. After finishing the food I wasn't too satisfied. So regretful that we had food here, out of all of the other places there at the pier. Orders Seafood Combo - Fried calamari, shrimp, fish with fries, side of house coleslaw and not sure if the white sauce was tartar or not. Calamari and shrimp (both frozen, pre-breaded) had a good fry. However, the fish was not edible at all. The fish was so mushy inside, imagine mashed potatoes with a fish flavor. Their homemade coleslaw is very bland and not your average type. It's all cabbage (shredded) and appears to be prepared with an oil-based dressing. It was lacking sweetness, flavor, and tang. It shouldn't even be called coleslaw. If you do eat here, just be aware of the aggressive birds flying inside trying to get your food. If you are eating at the tables outside, be aware of the birds dropping bombs on you LOL. The staff behind the counter were all nice and friendly. read more

This place goes to the flying rats or birds of the pier, they are rather charming until they come for your crumbs oft inspiring some to scream or gesticulate in utter horror. The orange clam chowder is the best and oh does it taste well. Another thing is that they sell beer here and not excessively overpriced--all in all The Hook will draw you in on it's good prices. read more

So good!!! I like how they had all the meals on display that was helpful when ordering. ALSO the tarter and ranch was so good and i'm a big critic on that. The hot dog looked like a sad excuse and something you would send to your cheating ex for revenge. Overpriced and not authentic. I came and tried this place due to the cute decorations outside and the nice vibes it gave off, but this place is more of a tourist trap than anything. The chili was from a can as it is literally called "Stagg's Chili" on the menu and was overly salty and lacked enough beans or beef. The fish and chips look unappetizing and greasy. Visiting family in the bay area and feeling somewhat touristy at the time, we decided to stroll on down to Pier 39 and grab some "fresh" clam chowder. It was Christmas Day and packed, so instead of being more selective about where we chose chowder, we instead opted for a shorter wait time. Hook & Cook, even though we waited 10 minutes or so in line before ordering, won (unfortunately for us.) Look, I know you're hungry--you've had to fight traffic just getting down to the pier, and you've spent time searching for over-priced parking--and since you're already here, you're kind of at the mercy to whatever restaurants are made available. And I also know that you're thinking "fresh" clam chowder would hit the spot about now. But here at Hook & Cook, the clam chowder isn't fresh. It's from a can. And it's pricey, over $8.00 for what little you'll receive in that sourdough bowl you've been eyeing. Maybe you should just move on. How do I know it's not fresh? Check out the potatoes: the uniformity, the perfect cubes. It's processed, canned. Hook & Cook certainly isn't promoting "fresh" clam chowder, and that's fine, but neither are they revealing the chowder's true origins. I'm not bashing Hook & Cook or anything; I'm just letting you know what you're getting, that's all. Added, we also ordered fried calamari (see photo). I'm not sure as to why our $9.25 order of previously frozen calamari was half-filled with french fries, but it was; however, given the chowder letdown, we didn't question. Food is just very mediocre. The great thing is they let you sample the soup before you buy. Kind've pricey, but what do you expect it's on a world-renowned pier. The clam chowder tasted a little watered down and the looks of it was very pastey white as you can see in my picture. The garlic fries didn't have the garlic kick to it it just tasted like fries they dropped in the fryer and dropped some minced garlic on it. This is more of a tourist attraction then good eats. When I came here last time, I had a sudden urge to grab fish and chips. Even though there were plenty of places to eat on Fisherman's Wharf, we decided to stay at the front of the pier and grabbed something quick to eat. Fish and Chips are weird for me because for the life of me, I'm assuming it's literally a fry fish and potato chips. It's not until my later years I would discovered it's only a quick deep fried battered fish and fries. I think the place was picked was because of its colorful exterior with some outdoor benches in front of the place. Not recommended to sit out there and eat because the wind kept blowing our napkins and food off the table. The food itself was not that remarkable and was charged to a premium touristy price. it was only worth because we were starving, otherwise the fries were stale and the fish tasted like chicken strip. Very ho-hum. If I can take a fried fish and chips, that would have been awesome because for the rest of my trip, I wound up going to three more fish & chips place. Gross too. Batter was shameful and it was small. Not fresh. Fish? Looked at the sister eating it, and i didn't want to try it. She was just eating it to not waste her money. Considering this place is on the pier, I'm very disappointed in the quality of fish & chips. They give you the tiniest little paper basket to hold your fish & chips and it is the smallest portion for the amount you pay! I ordered a clam chowder in a sour dough bowl (came out to be around $10 for the clam chowder) and it was alright. The only reason why I settled for a clam chowder bowl here is because the line at Boudin was incredibly long. The girl at the register was not having it. There were maybe 10 people standing around the register waiting for their orders (and I can understand because there is absolutely no place to stand considering the place is so small). The girl at the register would constantly shout "I CAN HELP THE NEXT PERSON IN LINE" with the most aggravated face. I was stuck behind all the people waiting for the orders when I was trying to get my order in. I was completely polite to the cashier and she was still stuck with an irritated face and gave me so much attitude. (I feel you girl, I have RBF too, but that's no way to treat a customer, ever). Accidents happen, but it's how you handle a situation that makes it better... Wanted to grab a quick lunch and this looked like a good place. I had the seafood combo and my boyfriend had the chicken sandwich. The food was okay... We sat at the back of the restaurant next to the door to the patio. There was a highchair placed in a very weird position, on top of a sort of shelving unit to the side of our table. It was angled with the top toward us. My boyfriend mentioned, "that looks unsafe," but I didn't think anything of it. About 15 minutes later when someone walked out the back door, the highchair fell and hit me. One of the employees actually tried to put it back up in the same position until I told him that it just fell on me and that he probably shouldn't put it back again. He simply left it in the way of the door after that. Other customers asked if I was okay, but the employees said nothing. Although I'm not mad that it happened, it is annoying that none of the employees made sure I was alright or said anything to me about it. They ignored the situation and pretended like it didn't happen. Very unprofessional. Needless to say I won't be going back. read more

I wouldn't be so critical if it weren't for the fact that I settled on this establishment when there are so many others I should have looked at. I paid near $10 for a small serving of 7 pieces of what they must have considered to be calamari. The fries made the small pieces look ridiculous. Also their "slaw"...it was like the portion you would get in a ketchup cup. Those small paper ones. I didn't even touch it. It was such a disappointment. The only thing that kept my mind off of it was the cold beer they had on tap. $16 for a pitcher of Dos Equis amber. By the way, they do take a $3 deposit for the pitcher so you're obliged to return it at the register for that money back. Will not be back here for food. Maybe the drinks. read more
