The food was delicious but the wait was exceptionally long. It was only my mother and I and one more small group of 3 people in the entire restaurant. We waited 40 minutes for eggs and bacon. The other party was so fed up that they got up and left. The staff did apologize but nothing more to explain the hold up. Worst experience ever! We went after the coffin races but you would think that as long as this event has been going on they would be prepared. They were out of bacon pimento cheese and later we found out white gravy for the biscuits and gravy so they decided to use brown gravy instead! We asked the waitress about this and she said oh we ran out of gravy also it's going to be awhile. We looked at the white board and tried to order something else but they were out of everything so the rest of the table was stuck with burgers and fried chicken with no gravy for the mashed potatoes. Biscuits were burnt we asked for new ones and the waitress said they ran out its going to be awhile for some new ones. When the bill arrived we asked to speak to the manager. We complained about the whole meal and crappy service and he said " what do you want me to do about it" very rudely. We asked to at least be compensated for the biscuits and gravy and very reluctant he finally agreed. He saw my service dog and said "why is there a dog in here" very loudly making a scene and my friend said he is a service dog. Mind you so called waitress' friend walked in with her white dog and sat down at the table next to us with no vest or identification. I guess it's all in who you know. We will never return. Just got done from zip lining and this place was close to eat, the look and feel reminds me of being back in the south, it has a cozy home style feel to it. The menu options are few, they do have a breakfast side and lunch side. I ordered the Meatloaf,mash potatoes and green beans with a sweet tea, the sweet tea is great just the way I like it, the meat loaf was spectacular along with the mash potatoes and beans. Ok so I might have given it 4 stars but for the fact that the "issues" are not really "issues" considering the eclectic vibe of Manitou. My husband and I visited here this past week. We had lunch here. We both had a cheeseburger with fries. I added bacon to mine. They were DELICIOUS. The burgers were juicy and perfectly cooked. The fries were perfectly fried and perfectly salted. The owner talked us into the buttermilk pie with berry compote at the end of the meal and we were not disappointed. The owner was so friendly and hospitable. He gave us all the right pointers too on how to best enjoy Manitou and the surrounding area. It was okay. The menu is very limited, but seems to have a few more breakfast options. I would classify it more as generic American food than comfort food. Certainly not the soul food I've experienced. I got the meatloaf, which had a different taste than a classic recipe. It was good and wasn't greasy, but not worth going out of the way for. I also got a slice of buttermilk pie wjth fruit compote. The fruit tasted like it had been soaked in liquor, so that was unexpected and not pleasant. The pie was okay, but not very custard, which is what the waitress discribed it as. As noted by others, it's a very small place. Fortunately, I got there after the last of their lunch crowds left, so I had the room to myself. The waitress was civil, but not very warm and didn't welcome questions giving short answers. She didn't check on me during my meal, but did ask if I saved room for dessert one of the times she walked through. The owner came out to wipe down tables and he was friendly. A little pricey, but part of that is just being in Manitou. Unlikely I'll be back since what I ate didn't stand out and nothing else on the menu jumped out as something I really want to try, either. read more

So we ducked in for lunch, ended up ordering breakfast and were blown away with the home style, fresh taste of ALL our items. My best advice to keep in mind when visiting The Kitchen is to skip the experience entirely and to instead catch one of the many wild squirrels and eat it raw before washing it down with the deliciously dirty water from the nearby stream. This, my friends, would have been a far superior experience to the grime infested, lackluster service at the local grease pit known as The Kitchen. I'll be brief. My party and I weren't wise enough to inspect the (blood) stained table clothes and dirty windows/silverware/glasses before my friend had ordered his warm and flat Sprite. Alas, we were stuck in their greasy grasp. How does one make a ketchup bottle look unappealing? You'd have to ask the experts at The Kitchen. Our first warning sign should have been the lack of customers, but at least we would have an especially attentive waitress, right?! Wrong. Ms. Slow was our waitress, and Mr. Slower was our cook. We were famished from a day hike, so we managed to absorb the grease (once it finally arrived) and attempted to get out asap. It was difficult to pry myself from the sticky booth and use the run down bathroom, which turned into another regret. My stomach churned as I caught a glimpse of the grill that may not have been cleaned since grand opening. Oooof. To top it off, Ms. Slow shoved my friend's change in his face, curtly telling him that he had shorted her when he had given proper change. This place was fantastic, we went there this afternoon, quiet nice day and we were the only two there. A man who I assume was the owner greeted us, very friendly and we sat at the table right by the window. Extremely nice, very cozy and just awesome. The two gentlemen there were both very friendly and attentive, but not to the point that it was an annoyance. Just making sure we had water and that everything was good. Food came out was amazing, we had the Fried Chicken and Chocolate Chip Pancakes, both awesome, fries and the biscuit were great as well. It was really good for being this little spot we had walked past so many times! Its no place for health nuts but mmmmm was it good. The older man there came back and talked us into getting the buttermilk pie, neither of us had even heard of it and im SO glad he did. It was amazing, Ive never had anything like it. Overall for the 2 plates and the dessert the bill was right under $30 (having waters no soda or anything) But I think it was well worth it being just a little on the pricy side. The waitress seemed upset we came in during the last hour before they closed, and they don't seem very appreciative of your business if you bring a Groupon. After forgetting our burgers and offering to discount our meal, he brought us the adjusted receipt. Worst service ever. When we walked in we were asked if we minded waiting a few minutes because they were slammed by a big lunch rush. No problem we said and waited patiently.
