I'm not really understanding the previous reviews - perhaps they were expecting some sort of chain restaurant-type deal.. But I absolutely loved this restaurant. It was our first trip to Manitou Springs, we were just walking along and happened upon the place. They were technically closed, but welcomed us in anyway. The burgers were spectacular, and I absolutely adored the staff. Our waiter was also helping in the kitchen - it's only run by a couple of people, hence the time it takes to prepare. They make everything from scratch, so obviously it's going to take a little longer, particularly with only two people. The waiter we had was the best kind of strange - he was himself, and unapologetic about it; a unique character that became a part of my overall unique and lovely experience in Manitou Springs. I can understand, perhaps, how some more tightly-wound folk would find it off-putting but I found everything about the place endearing and wonderful. He even gave us a little tip for which routes to explore for the best views of the city - and they were magical. Loved the food, loved the staff, yes it takes a minute for the food to be ready but AGAIN, it's not a chain! they're genuine and it's only a couple of them. If you're looking for a truly Manitou Springs experience with interesting conversation (i hate small-talk!), you need to check this place out. read more

Darrin was a very funny waiter, nice guys, great soulful food, and a comfortable, clean, and cute inside. I had a burger and fries and was not disappointed with the juiciness of the burger nor the crispness of the fries! Very small place, historic looking, not what someone might be use to shape wise on the inside. Average prices to low, they serve breakfast and lunch while they are open. Had a Groupon to use and went to the kitchen after church with my husband. The chef came out and greeted us, we took our seats and ordered some waters and OJ. We were the only ones in their initially which was great, places our order immediately and got served five minutes after we ordered. I had the seasonal fruit, granola and yogurt dish while my husband had the biscuits and gravy. My husband really liked the biscuits and gravy for 8.50 and left very full. I on the other hand really liked my yogurt and granola but left still a little hungry. Overall , great experience with the staff and food. Recently moved to Manitou and have been trying everything here to se what is what. We had heard that the Dutch Kitchen had closed down and that The Kitchen had opened in it's spot, we went to give it a try. We never had Dutch Kitchen so I don't know how it compares but I have to say we were way impressed with The Kitchen! Cloth napkins and tablecloths are not what you would expect for a place that I had a hard time finding ANYTHING priced over $10! The staff was awesome, the food was awesome,all in all, this place is AWESOME! You gotta try it. Seating is VERY limited so go early or if you have to, it's well worth the wait! read more

I read some pretty wacky reviews about the kitchen that almost deterred us from coming, so we went to see what all the fuss was about. From the start the service was amazing; friendly, down home, efficient. We ordered the breakfast quiche and biscuits and gravy off the special menu to share and let me tell you something, it was good! I mean lick the plate clean good! It was like how grandma used to cook but then again g-ma never cooked this good! The portions were decent size and all made from scratch with fresh local ingredients, and the juice was freshly squeezed. We thought we would try something new so we stopped in for late breakfast on Sunday. I have to say I was not impressed! The food was like a truck stop only priced like a room service in a hotel. The service was ok with the exception of them leaving the door open on a brisk spring morning forcing me to eat in my coat. The bathrooms cleanliness mimic a truck stop as well. The environment was very chill and a nice escape from the busy town of Manitou Springs. Now with that said, my experience was not the best. I ordered their Chocolate Chip Pancake special with a side of fresh fruit. When the food arrived, the pancakes were very small and raw in the middle with a very strange tangy taste. And that "fresh fruit" that cost $4 to add to the pancakes, was a small bowl of cut up watermelon. This watermelon tasted weird and did not look very fresh. All in all, the entire experience wasn't a bust, but the food surely was. read more

After reading all of the positive reviews alongside all of the one star reviews, we felt compelled to check this place out for ourselves. Not sure what spurred all of the hate...we thought everything about the place was good. Stumbled into this small eatery in the midst of an April snow fall to eat breakfast on the way to the Cave of the Winds, and SO GLAD we did. The best restaurant breakfast I have ever had, ordered a biscuit, over easy eggs and bacon and it was beyond delicious. Hubby had pretty much the same and his eyes were rolling into the back of his head. After scraping our plates clean they offered us buttermilk pie w/berry compote for dessert and ... seriously ... who eats dessert after breakfast?, but given I had never had buttermilk pie and we were on vacation ... well, rules are meant to be broken. No matter what meal you are eating, save room for the buttermilk pie. Would eat here again and again. It is a small town hole in the wall type atmosphere, but clean and inviting and friendly. This place is filthy! I'm surprised the board of health hasn't shut it down. Everything is covered in greasy fingerprints - the windows, the salt and pepper shakers, the menus. Our breakfasts were cooked in some kind of grease. There are layers of dust on the overhead beams, one of the lamps is attached to the wall with duct tape and the windows are nearly opaque from the finger marks. Yuck. read more

This place had awesome customer service! The food was great and you can tell the owners enjoy what they do, they both took the time to chat us up and they were very friendly! My husband had the fried chicken and the owner thought that the two pieces he got, was not good enough so she packed him more to take with him to go! So cool of her! If you are the stuffy type that is in a quick hurry you probably won't like the laid back atmosphere, and they won't like you either so go someplace else to bed unhappy! read more

We came in for a late lunch and were warned they were out of many things, including fried chicken, fries, and mashed potatoes. Based on yelp reviews, we still forged ahead and 3 of us ordered the chicken salad sandwich....about $10 including a side. After ordering, we were told they didnt have enough cucumber salad sides for 3 of us....only 2. Although the chicken salad tasted good, there was barely any chicken salad on our sandwiches....felt like they spread the contents of 1 sandwich over 3, and it was served on white bread similar to Wonder bread. We literally could have made better sandwiches at home. Very disappointing. Also, not much atmosphere. The buttermilk pie with berry compote was good though. read more

It was not great. I think that they try to cover there lack of experience in the food business with cloth napkins and table cloths but it doesn't work all that well. I just went to this restaurant today with my family because we wanted to experience what restaurant had replaced the old Dutch Kitchen. I thought that it was going to be a friendly cozy environment but I was very disappointed. The staff were all over the place and when one of the waiters came up to our table to give the specials and take our drink orders he started by listing all of the things that they were out of. On a Sunday noon they were all ready out of fruit and yogurt. When we got our drinks all of the sodas were flat. We had to wait a while for the waiter to come back out of the kitchen to tell him about this and then he took them away. When we ordered I ordered the Fried Chicken (asking for white meat which the waiter said they might be out of) with the french fries, my little brother ordered a burger with french fries, my big brother ordered the Pimento Cheese sandwich, and my grandmother got the Chicken Salad sandwich. It took a while for the food to come out and honestly it wasn't worth the wait. When the food came out the Pimento Cheese sandwich had only one small scoop of the filling in each sandwich the waiter took it back to the kitchen and they put more on it. The burger and Chicken Salad sandwich were good according to my brother and Grandmother. But the big thing was the fried chicken. The skin was salty and tasty but the chicken was undercooked and pink in the middle. I wasn't able to finish my meal because of this. The biscuits that came with the fried chicken were buttery but really heavy and not light and fluffy like biscuits should be. After we had "finished" we had to wait a long time for the waiter to come and give us our check. After he gave the check it took a long time for him to come back to get the check and cards and then the same thing for him to come back. After all of this I can say with total confidence that the service was poor. The food was not good quality and the atmosphere was quiet and uncomfortable. I'm sure the the reviewers are right about how amazing the food is, but unfortunately I will never know. We walked in and the place was half empty and the owner/host apologized and said they were slammed and it would be a few minutes but we could take a seat if we wanted. We said no problem and sat down. The staff kind of acted like they didn't want us there. We didn't know if we should stay or leave but then they took our order. I ordered sweet tea and he said I didn't want that because it was too sweet. I asked what was in the chicken salad and he said "don't worry, you'll like it." Just lots of weird stuff like this. They kept refilling our drinks so we stayed, but it was very uncomfortable. Everyone else in the place seemed to be in the same boat. Very quiet, not eating, etc... The food I did see looked and smelled amazing to be fair. This was all at noon on a Friday. We only had two hours in Manitou as we were just passing through, and I feel like I wasted it sitting in this place. read more

Amazing! Although the food did take longer than average, it was well worth the wait. We started out with the BLT k'uesedilla. We both agreed it was both one of the best BLTs and one of the best quesadillas we've ever had. Following that, we both got the fried chicken entree and shared our sides of greens and mashed potatoes. Again the greens were the best greens I've ever had. This is most likely due to the fact that it was more of a warm bacon salad than your traditional greens. The mashed potatoes were clearly made from scratch and seasoned to perfection. The fried chicken was everything you'd hope fried chicken from a place like this to be. It wasn't covered in a thick layer of batter like other places do to cover up what they lack in quality. It was perfectly fried and crispy on the outside, but fall of the bone moist on the inside. Service was great and staff was very friendly. This is our new go to for lunch in Manitou. My only regret was that I couldn't eat any more. read more

I would give this place 6 stars If I could. Incredible food, all hand made. I had the chicken salad sandwich with hand cut fries. The chicken salad was made with grapes and pecans and served with lettuce and tomato. My husband had the meatloaf and it was served with mashed potatoes and greens. The meatloaf was excellent but the greens were exceptional! Spinach, baby kale, and collard greens mixed with bacon and onion! This was the absolute WORST meal/place I have ever had the displeasure of having to endure (and I've been to some dumps!)! We saw their sign and you could smell the hamburgers which smelled great so we decided to try it out. First, the table cloth looked like they butchered a cow on it. There were stains and hair on it. The girl took our drink order THEN once they came out and we were drinking them she tells us they were out of hamburger and several other items (it was about 12:30 and the place did NOT have many people in there). I should have just paid for the drinks and left at that point. We finally settled on breakfast food. My Mother sausage was undercooked and my biscuits and gravy were COLD not warm COLD. The WORST biscuits I have ever had. We told out server and she said "sorry" and walked away. I thought she went to the kitchen to take care of it but...nope. Clearly rolling silverware and wandering around was WAY more important. Trying not to lose my temper I went to who I can only imagine was an owner or manager (who may or may not have indulged in a few cocktails that morning from his behavior) and told him about the problem and I wanted the check. I could tell at first he didn't want to take moms entire meal off but she didn't get to eat it because we were waiting for them to correct the problem. He did take her meal off but I was so pissed at that point I wasn't even going to argue about the slop they called biscuits and gravy. Upon check out, I had no choice not to leave a tip so I gave the lowest that I could give. I was a server when I was younger and I never not tip but this girl deserved NOTHING!
