A fun Christmas tradition. The restaurant is super festive with a nice cozy atmosphere and the iconic beautiful tree. Very family friendly, especially brining our infant for the first time. The food is noting to write home about. Small portions and kind of salty. Nonetheless, the food was acceptable quality. You are really visiting to take in the spirit of the season. This place brought back so many memories from when I was a kid. And I'm so happy I get to keep the tradition going in taking my daughter. The food was decent but the best was the meatloaf. I tried the pot pie from my mom but in my opinion had to much black pepper. And with the kids food they get a complimentary cookie and a commerative mug to keep. Our waitress jordan was amazing as well and couldn't have asked for better service. What was awesome was that they have princess fairies walking around mainly for kids but they include adults as well. The ambiance was nice and it does get a little dark but it was nice. And FYI it's hard getting a table by the tree even with reservations but are still allowed to take pics in front of the tree. Can't wait to come back next year. read more

What a great place to visit to get in the Christmas spirit! The salmon was cooked perfectly and very tasty. Another person in our party had the classic chicken pot pie and said it was delicious. The service was wonderful, and they were very sensitive to my inability to have gluten due to Celiacs. The decorations, history and ambiance are so festive! The huge Christmas tree is visible from most of the tables. I also love that the restaurant is in the old Marshall Fields department store. We spent many years taking our children downtown to see the decorated windows at the store. They still decorate the windows, although not quite as elaborately. Stopped by after a brisk morning shopping at the wonderful German Christmas market. I loved the decor and the fairies walking around spreading holiday cheer and finishing off with a sprinkle of dust - I'm not talking the usuals at Roscoe's. For the meal we started with some adult egg nog and I ordered the famous chicken pot pie as my entree. The egg nog was wonderful and puts you in the Christmas cheer. Had lovely spices and wasn't overly boozy. The pot pie was wonderful, but the side salad was a little droopy. It's more of a thick chicken soup topped with a puff pastry, but tasty nonetheless. That being said, the male bathroom's lock needed some care and some of the staff weren't as... professional or knowledgeable as would've liked. Still a great classic after all these years. I've been coming here for almost 40 years. Unique trees with different colors and themes yearly. Didn't seem to be as busy in the past, but it's early. Pricing is still very modest for the area. The server was very friendly and nice. The appetizer came out quickly, the salads were a little bit flat maybe because it's towards the end of the evening. Didn't order any drinks, the dinner was very tasteful, an adequate sized portion but nothing overwhelming. Got help from the staff taking pictures without feeling pressured to hurry up. Let's be clear: you should not go to The Walnut Room for the food. You go for the pleasure of enjoying a meal with family and friends under the Christmas tree in a historic setting that has been a Chicago tradition for well over a century. The food we had was just fine. Nothing to write home about, but serviceable for the occasion. The menu is straight comfort food -- turkey dinner, pot pie, salmon, sandwiches -- so if you're looking for top tier fine dining, you're in the wrong place. The prices are not over-the-top. Again, you're paying for ambiance and setting, not food quality, and I felt like cost was appropriate for the experience. Our server, Yolanda, was efficient and friendly. There were plenty of people -- staff and guests alike -- offering to take family pictures, and isn't that one of the reasons people go? One hostess, and I regret that I did not catch her name (short build, long braided pony tail with reddish tints, grey blazer and skirt), went out of her way to make sure we had ONE MORE family photo with the tree before we left. She was so nice and on board with the holiday spirit. A warning to those looking for the perfect picture: the holiday lighting is not ideal. Your pictures might come out with a weird tint, which is why the turkey and gravy in my picture looks purple. To avoid traffic, I recommend eating at an off hour. We made a reservation for 4pm on a Sunday, and were seated right away next to the tree. There were also a few open tables ready to go. We finished just as the standard dinner traffic was picking up, and there was a noticeable change in the overall vibe from relaxed to rushed. I'm sad that the 8th floor viewing balcony has been closed. The interior felt a bit like an amusement park which isn't necessarily bad. Still, the ambience was not what I thought it would be. I had snagged a last minute reservation after Christmas so maybe it was different because of the seasonal crowd. My family each got different meals, but I couldn't help noticing how they seemed to use the same ingredients in every dish (green beans, nuts and gravy). The chicken pot pie was front in center on the menu so I figured I should try it! It was delicious and nicely seasoned. At the same time, it was plated as if someone might've just heated it up and placed a giant ritz cracker on top of it. My favorite part actually ended up being the salad that came with! The experience did not start to great as I requested to sit by the tree and it was not granted. We were seated in the back corner, and did not receive service for about 20 minutes, I finally went up to the busser, and asked if we had anyone, and our whole experience was turned around by NATALIE!!!!!!! Ask to always be seated in her section she was amazing!!!!! We ordered the chicken pot pie which was a classic gravy base with a flaky puff pastry crust on top. The walnut room is a cute vibe for Christmas but you're truly going for the experience, not the food. They have a very cute Christmas tree and if you have small children there are "fairies" that walk around and grant wishes. If you're going for the food, I wouldn't. The food is all...fine. Nothing bad but nothing good. We had the butter board, which was okay, lobster bisque was okay, I did like both the house and the Caesar salad a lot. I had the chicken salad and it was again, okay. Really excited about a 1st time dinner at the infamous WALNUT ROOM but was disappointed immediately after receiving my plate. 1st of all our food was brought to the table within a few moments after ordering which was a surprise only to realize that my plate of meatloaf had been previously prepared and reheated before serving. I could tell because I eat out often and the gravy on the meatloaf had the look of a plastic display plate. The green beans that came with the dish were definitely reheated and bad of taste. I told my waiter and they brought me a new plate that appeared to be a little better. Sorry to say I won't be eating at the Walnut Room ever again. I've been going to the Walnut Room on the Monday before Thanksgiving for several years. My friend and I have a tradition of going to see the tree and the windows. However, now that we need a reservation it has put a big damper on our outing. We tried getting a reservation the first day that they were available but they were already booked through December I continued to try right up until the day that we went. even though we could not get a reservation we went anyway and were directed to get in line and we would be seated soon. We ended up being seated at the wine bar. It was ok. We had an obstructed view of the tree. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Trying to get a reservation has gotten so difficult that I'm not sure we will go again. There is no point in going if we are not seated near the tree. We go for the Christmas atmosphere. read more

Marvelous place with a wonderful history and beautiful food. The restaurant used to be owned and run and created by Mrs. Field. She was an icon in Chicago decades ago, for serving home cooked meals for a decent price. And continuing the tradition, the walnut room is a good place for a good meal. I had her signature chicken pot pie and one of the best I've ever had outside of my grandmother's cooking. The sauce was perfect, just the right amount of chicken and peas and other wonderful things in a cream sauce but that crust on top just floats on the surface. And it's crispy and flaky pastry dough that puffs up when you cook it. The flavor was absolutely delicious and it comes with a nice salad on the side. I would come back here for lunch anytime. read more

I was LUCKY to get the first day at 630pm! And the hostess worked with me to get a table inside the room with the tree. Overall, it was a fun experience (more or less); the table we had was definitely put in to have an extra table - it was tight and way to close to the table of 5 next to us. Food was great ($$-$$$ side -- but that's to be expected). Changing colors of the room: I preferred the orange as it was "natural" and easy to take pics of the food and tree in its natural light; also the alternating affected my sight a little. Marshall Field's flagship department store thrived as a premier Chicago tourist destination for several generations. Although its successor Macy's compromised the store's high standards, I give them credit for not defiling the Walnut Room. As one of the oldest (1907) and most revered restaurants in Chicago, its décor is well preserved and the tradition of dining under the Great Tree during the Holiday season has been kept. Although much of the store's elan has faded, the experience of dining here can still be nostalgic and gratifying. We were seated right on time at a 4-top with a spectacular view of the tree. Our server was friendly, patient, and alert to our needs. All of us feasted on lobster bisque, cider-basted turkey, and Frango mint pie, and the quality of the food exceeded our expectations. But I have a couple things to add to Santa's "naughty list." Several of Macy's elevators and escalators were out of order, which made getting to the 7th floor a challenge. When the elevator we rode lurched to a stop on 7, nothing happened for several seconds and then the doors finally struggled to creak open. My dad surprised my fiancee and I by booking a table for lunch for Christmas, and it was such a lovely surprise. As always, The Walnut Room was elegantly decorated for Christmas with the big tree, and it brought back all the nostalgia of when I'd used to go as a child. We were here for a really long time, because the time between courses was massive. Our server was nice and apologetic, which we appreciated. My partner got a hot cider ($13) and was really pleased with it. I tried to order a Frango Irish Coffee ($11) but was brought the wrong drink of an Eggnog Brandy Alexander ($13). Not only was I still charged for the drink, but I was charged MORE for the eggnog that I didn't order, even when I immediately pointed out the mistake. We also tried to order souvenir mugs that he never came back with, but thankfully he also forgot to put them on our bill so, at least I'm not out the extra money there. We started with appetizers. I got a bowl of lobster biqsue ($8) that was delicious, but poured messily all over the bowl. We also got a cheese plate ($10) that was pretty good. My partner got the Savory Spice Rub Salmon ($24) that came with risotto, and it was absolutely delcious. Well cooked, well seasoned, and the risotto was perfect. I ordered the classic meatloaf ($16) and I can honestly say it's the prettiest meatloaf I've ever ordered. It came with whipped potatoes, gravy, and green beans sauteed in pecan cranberry butter. It was all fantastic, and the nice crunch from the pinenuts was a balanced addition. All in all the food was great, I wish I had gotten what I ordered in less than over two hours. read more

I found this place on accident while looking for a bathroom! Being from out of town, we decided to check out the Macy's store in Chicago. Who knew they had that many floors of products?!???!? I'm on the 7th floor, using the bathroom. As I walk out, I'm admiring the Christmas decorations. All of a sudden, this elegant room catches my eye. As I walk closer, the room gets massive and I see this impressive water fountain. I knew this was the place for lunch! I scrambled back to the first floor to grab my wife for lunch.... The place looks like it hasn't changed since it was built. It definitely felt like presidents, bankers and famous people were there for banquets or celebrations. Maybe kings and queens too! It just felt historical... maybe even haunted (in a "The Shining" type of way). I definitely wouldn't want to be someone closing by myself in that place! I'm sure quite a few ghosts walk the place. I'm willing to bet! All joking aside, the place was impressive. I had no idea Macy's had this place. It was a pleasant surprise and wonderful lunch. The hosted was nice. She gave me a historical background on the building. The waiter was friendly and very attentive. My wife had salmon. I had a Turkey club sandwich. Both very good. Good good portions. This was our first time here. We enjoyed it! We made reservations and arrived a bit early. They had a special place for the queue to check-in and that queue went really fast. We were seated promptly and right near the Christmas tree. We started out with a Walnut a room Old Fashioned for our pre-brunch cocktail. The drinks were okay - nothing special in our vast Old Fashioneds experience. Later, we ordered a Walnut Room salad and a bowl of Lobster Bisque. The salad was nice and the soup was very good. There were pieces of lobster in the bisque as well - very nice. We shared a Chicken Pot Pie. It was decent but could have been so much better. First, it's small. Not a meal to be shared unless you're sharing other items like we did. It had a nice crispy browned crust on top. Trouble came when we broke through that crust. Some of the vegetables were real crunchy - like raw. And the pie itself was barely warm. I'd order this again if they would promise to cook mine another 15 minutes covered. We closed with Carrot Cale and coffee. Oh my - the carrot cake was very good. So moist and flavorful. Among the best I've had. We'd definitely come back. read more

We came for a holiday lunch and things seemed a little underwhelming and definitely like a factory. The big Christmas tree was up, but not much else. They run you through a photo op before being seated and then there is a short, well priced menu. We were seated pretty far from the tree, but had a very nice server. Food came out quickly, it tasted fine, we ate, paid and were out the door in 30 minutes. We saw a fairy person visiting tables with kids, but in general it didn't feel very festive. My family and I decided to come here when I was visiting and it really is beautiful! The giant tree they have for Christmas is very elegant and bring you in the holiday mood. Despite how elegant this place looks, I was very surprised by how casual the food is from here. It didn't really match with the atmosphere they were trying to create. My mom and I tried to order drinks, but immediately sent them back as they were both awful. They have pretty much no flavorings so my mom ordered a Cosmo and I got a Moscow Mule. Neither one was even remotely close to correct. For dinner, I got the soup of the day, which was a Chicken Tortilla Chili, and the Roasted Vegetable Grain Bowl. Both were delicious! The soup had a slight, but not overpowering, amount of heat to it, which brought out the other flavors. Every ingredient in the grain bowl was crunchy and fresh and blended very well together. For dessert, I got the Frango Mint Chocolate Ice Cream Pie. I don't actually like pie, so I didn't like the pie crust, but the ice cream itself was delicious! Frango is one of my favorite chocolates ever, so I loved being able to have it in a different way. Despite how much I enjoyed the food and dessert and the scenery, there was something about this place that just didn't click for me. It seems like such an elegant place by the decor, but the casual dress of the guests and the casual food options confused me. My Mami aka Mom came for a visit and we went for lunch at the Walnut Room before Christmas! Reservations are a MUST! It was packed with families of all generations! It is their 115th Anniversary and at the end of the meal we were presented with a glass coffee mug commemorating their anniversary! While we waited for our food, a woman dressed as a fairy came to our table and granted us each a wish! The huge tree in the room also provided a changing color experience from time to time! My Mami ordered the historic Chicken Pot Pie! She loved every bite! I ordered the Chicken Caesar Salad which was nicely dressed! i want to like this place more so bad that i'm giving it an extra star on ambiance and service alone located just a couple short blocks away from millennium park + the bean, it's located the 7th floor of the macy's on state street and honestly, everything we tried, other than the pot pie, was really just okay and not worth writing all too much about; but the location itself felt otherworldly. upon entry, we were greeted by a beautiful marble fountain in a bright foyer, and then taken back to a massive but practically empty dining area, surrounded by wood paneling and dark but intimate lighting. to happen upon this place on a rainy weekday afternoon, with the high class of servers and hosts in their employ -- it made me feel nostalgic for a time i never personally experienced myself (i think the word is anemoia?) because even though all the tables around us were almost completely empty of other patrons, i couldn't help but picture this room full of businessmen in suits and fancy women in beautiful dresses; of clinking glasses and roaring gossip in old chicago, whatever that might mean if you're in the area and you have a couple hours to burn, i urge you to please, please, please consider burning them here. i imagine other places like this still exist in someplace, somewhere, but i sure as heck haven't been in them/wouldn't know how to find them/won't be invited to them any time soon thank you for the wonderful experience, and for still standing here after so many years. we will definitely be back again, and hopefully during some sort of holiday or event when it's more bursting with life, as it should be read more

Not the Walnut Room from yesteryear! I could not wait for my short rib meal ($25), but was quickly disappointed. It had a very odd taste. Another at my table had the same and noted the off-putting flavor, too.. The carrots and mashed potatoes were good. However, for me, the meat was soft but inedible. I'm no meat cut expert, but I think that was actually pot roast as there weren't any short rib bones, and the meat was long like pot roast. I did not eat the meat portion. The room was not overly crowded. The room very dark with a blue tinge to lighting making it kinda too dark. We did share a Frango ice cream pie. THAT was excellent. Also, because they told me the food was prepared way ahead of time (code for comissary?) They provided me a list with allergens with the overarching disclaimer that it's all in the kitchen with nuts, peanuts, seeds. DO BETTER, MACY'S! The waiter was nice, the gal taking pics for guests at the tree was incredibly sweet. Would I go again? Not too sure, maybe. But only because of tradition, as it wasn't a good meal for me. Definitely would NEVER order the "short rib/pot roast" meat thingy ever again. Actually, I might just go for dessert only, if I were to return. Horrible experience. Breakfast with Santa. Made reservations the day they were posted back early November. Confirmed my reservation several times. Stopped by the Walnut room to request a table close to the tree. Well when we arrived Sunday for breakfast with Santa, with our party of 10, I was told breakfast was over and Santa was gone and that there was a misunderstanding. I paid $40 parking for absolutely nothing. How was everything confirmed but yet when we arrive its over. Something was mixed up and it wasn't on my end. The told my party we could stay for lunch, but we refused to spend any money with them. The kids were so disappointed, but we headed over to PINSTRIPES for Brunch with Santa and they were very accommdating. read more
