There are some very nice 'date' places in Raleigh and The Melting Pot consistently ranks near the top in our book. It comes very, very close to getting a five-star rating from me with only a few nits keeping it from a perfect score. The restaurant is in a convenient location just off of the beltline and Wake Forest Road with more than sufficient parking. There is a small, full-service bar that is mostly used as an area for people waiting for their seats. While known for their wine cellar, we've mostly just enjoyed some of their cocktails (such as the very tasty Yin and Yang Martini which is decorated with a namesake pattern of swirls in shaved chocolate). [If you don't know what fondue is, read below, otherwise skip to the next paragraph!] The are is broken mostly into cozy nooks for 2-4 people but they also have tables where the dividers can be removed for larger parties. Each table has at least one fondue pot heater. The pot is used for the cheese appetizer, the main course and the chocolate dessert. The pot is shared by the diners to keep the cheese/chocolate melted so you can dip things in it or to keep broth/oil hot so you can cook your main dish. Before I get to the meat of the review, let me say that the Lovely Wife and I have been going to TMP for many, many years. It has changed locations once, owners at least once and menus several times. So we can be said to be somewhat experienced! We usually go hungry so that we can hit all four courses but popping in for just cheese or just dessert (or both!) is not a bad idea. The salads are uniformly tasty and our current favorites are the Apple Bacon Spinach (Spinach, Crimini Mushrooms, Sliced Egg, Spicy Pecans, Granny Smith Apples, Apple Bacon Vinaigrette) or the California (Mixed Greens, Candied Pecans, Gorgonzola Cheese, Tomatoes, Housemade Raspberry Walnut Vinaigrette). After that we dived into the cheese course. You can't go wrong with the Classic Alpine, Wisconsin Cheddar or the Fiesta. This time we did the Wisconsin Cheddar dipping the bread cubes and apples to whet our appetites. As fans of both Wisconsin cheese (and beer), this is nearly our default choice! Next is the entree course. The Lovely Wife is a vegetarian and gets, naturally, the Good Earth Vegetarian while I get the Steak Lovers. The exact components of each change over time but are generally a good mix though, on occasion, some less than successful items slip in. Eggplant? Really?! We have always done the oil cooking but my daughter says the broth is very tasty so we'll try that next time. Here's where my main complaint comes in. Over the years, the number of dipping sauces has gotten lower and lower and, this last time, they removed one of the only two frying coatings. The joy of the entree course is the VARIETY and this march toward a homogenized experience is a terrible idea in my opinion. For this one thing, they lost an entire star on this review. To round out the meal (it was our anniversary, so we did all four courses!), we had to have some chocolate! Let me be perfectly clear: ALL the options here are good. All of them! Sure, there are somethings I don't prefer (melted chocolate on pineapple?) but the star attraction, the velvety-smooth and satisfying sweet chocolate is unbeatable. It's only due to a very, very large meal that we don't lick the pot every time. What's left to say? Other than once, the service is impeccable though the prices are a tad high so bring a full wallet and a empty stomach! You'll be glad you did! read more

I brought my bride here for a congratulatory dinner after the place was recommended by a friend of hers. We chose a 4 course dinner for 2 with a bit of a carribean flavor. The whole night was one I'd not trade in for anything else the world has to offer. We were there for more than 3 hours and we were so engaged in what we were doing, between the conversations we were having and the fondue experience we had no idea the time was flying by. When we got up to leave, I looked at my watch and I was floored by the amount of time that had gone by and I expressed that sentiment with "Where in the world did the time go?" The booths were such that we could have a conversation, and it was just our conversation - we didn't have a dull roar to have to hear over. Our server was very helpful in explaining how things worked, what to do and what not to do with the fondue pot, the forks and everything else. She prepared our cheese fondue appetizer in front of us and after a short time, it was ready and it was sooooooooo Good! How good was it? It was Sooooooooo Good, I had to take notes on how to try to duplicate it at home. The dinner course was very memorable with a variety of meats and vegetables, all were very delicious and cooked perfectly (of course they were cooked perfectly, we cooked them ourselves). The best was yet to come. Fresh Strawberries dipped in hot chocolate fondue - need I say more? I have to say, this was one of the hardest star ratings I have ever had to come up with... Why you might ask? Well you are in luck (if you continue to read this), because I'm about to tell you why... First off, the atmosphere was really beautiful. We loved the art on the walls, the tables / booths were really nice... So a check in the plus column. Each table had it's own burner (obviously) and they were all very clean, up to date, etc... Again, very nice. So we sat down, and waited a few minutes for Dan (our server), who for the record was VERY good... Problem was, we didn't get to experience how "good" he was was often... To say it another way, service was VERY slow! After we ordered, it took all of 10 minutes to get our drinks... And I mean we didn't order complex stuff... Coke, water and a mixed drink (which by the way, my fiances mixed drink was in a small highball glass and cost 9 DOLLARS!!!). Anyway so we wait, and wait, and finally Dan comes back and again does a REALLY great job making our fondue for us, telling us what he was making, adding, etc. We think wow, this is really nice... I can't wait for the second course, which was our salads... Side note: the way the place is set up is designed for a 4 course meal, appetizer of simple fondue, salad, main meal, then a desert fondue. We did not know this, so when we ordered salads off of the "salads" portion of the menu, and they cost 6-8 dollars depending, we assumed larger sizes... but not huge. So we aren't really big eaters we assume fondue for 2 and 8 dollar salads should be plenty... WRONG! The first course fondue lasted about 3 minutes, and the overpriced salads were about the size of my fist. I mean really? 8 bucks for a handful of lettuce, tomatoes, 3 egg slices and dressing? That would cost me about 3 dollars anywhere else! So sadly, we were in a hurry, and the slow service in these 2 courses (and of course the small portions) were a bit frustrating, but I understand if your meal is designed to be 4 courses, they should be small... As we are getting the check, I am thinking, small courses, only 2 things and 1 mixed drink... maybe 15-20 bucks... 25 max! WRONG!!! FORTY DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will type that again a different way for those who can't read (but if you're reading this, you obviously can) 40$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're kidding me!!! In essence, that 40$ bought us one shot of hard liquor in her mixed drink, a cup and a half of various cheeses, and two salads that I could have eaten in 5 bites each easily... So I have to say, after the slow service and high tab, I just can't recommend this to anyone. In fact, the only reason this is 2 stars instead of 1, is because of Dan... This is the first fondue restaurant that I have ever been to. I had heard mixed reviews so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. My girlfriend took me here in August on a date right before I left for Korea for a year. She had been here before as I have not and tried to explain to me what fondue was....I was so confused because I thought it was just cheese. So we had about 4 courses....the first was a spinach/artichoke dip that was brought out and had to cook a little in a guess what? Melting pot! LOL! Anyway the server also brought out a platter with fruits and veggies that we could dip into the sauce. Who ever said apples and spinach/artichoke dip wasn't good has not tried it here! It was to die for! After our appetizer we each had a salad, which is pretty much like any other salad but the greens were crisp and fresh and the dressing was good as well. For our main dish we had a Hispanic sauce with a Coq Au Vin cooking style and the platter that had everything but lobster. The Hispanic sauce was from a theme they were doing at the time. It had a lot of different spices and full-bodied flavor. There was a varierty of meats and also mushrooms and potatoes. It was sooooo good! OMG! I wish I had my own kind at home. The best was about to come though.... For dessert we got their yin-yang chocolate which is white and milk chocolate with an assortment of things from brownie, marshmallow, rice krispy treats, to strawberries. I am not a fan of a lot of sugar but I definately could not get enough of this stuff. The restaurant was romantic and perfect for a date! The fam sent us back to the Melting Pot this past weekend as a real treat. We called early Saturday morning and were able to score an 8:30PM reservation. (This time is really the perfect time for a dinner at the Melting Pot because you are sufficiently hungry enough to actually enjoy the face stuffing experience you are about to embark upon.) We arrived and found the place was totally packed. The parking lot was 100% over capacity, so we parked in TJ's lot. We headed to the door and were greeted by an outpouring of about 40 people flooding out of the door. Either this place was on fire, or a large party was on their way out. We propped open the door until the coast was clear and then headed to the host station. We were quickly greeted and seated within moments. Our waiter was friendly and welcoming. He was attentive to our table and sincerely interested in our having a good time. He commented a dozen times how "easy" of a table we were, which is good 'cause who wants to be a PITA? We ordered the Alpine Big Night out and thoroughly enjoyed every course. The cheese had Riesling wine, course ground mustard, and was full of oooey gooey goodness! The salad had sundried tomatoes, candied almonds and a tasty vinaigrette. For the main course we had to add the lobster and loved every tasty morsel! Our favorite dippers include the green goddess and the yogurt curry sauce, they are worth the trip! For dessert we chose the dark chocolate with cointreau. Our waiter was scared to flambe the chocolate, but we let him off the hook and licked up every last spec of it! Everything from the food to the service was top notch! Dined here on 06/03/2021. Made a reservation for 8:30pm for 2 ahead of time. Arrived at the restaurant about 15 minutes early and had to stand in the doorway with two other couples while waiting for our tables. Wasn't ideal given the doorway is narrow and there is limited seating. Upon entry, the floor was noticeably dirty and needed to be swept. The hostesses were nice but not overly friendly. Once seated, we waited about 15 minutes to be greeted by our server and our table had leftover food on it. We actually sat across from a dirty table throughout our entire experience and that was unfortunate. Our server was very flat and impersonal. We shared with her that we were celebrating our 5 year anniversary but no special accommodations were taken throughout the meal. The cheese was good. We ordered the Spinach and artichoke dip however it wasn't served with chips, which it typically is. No biggie. Our server was very scarce the entire time. We had to flag her down for straws and refills. The salads were my least favorite part. All of the lettuce in my house salad was brown and red and old looking. That was also the case in the Caesar salad that my boyfriend ordered. No seasoning or black pepper was offered to us for our salads. The entree was good. We had teriyaki marinated sirloin and the steak lovers. Our server did bring additional sauces and vegetables at our request which was great since she appeared to be very busy. For the chocolate we had the cookies and creme. She added the Oreos and liquor and set it on fire and then she was off until she brought the check. No after dinner drinks or dessert drinks were offered and we would have probably ordered coffees before the dessert. Overall, the food was good, not the typical Melting Pot experience that I'm used to given that the salads were not good and no seasonings were offered throughout the meal. The service left a lot to be desired. I recognize we are recently out of COVID and restaurants are short staffed so I will give a bit of grace there but the experience just wasn't the same. So, I love chocolate and I love cheese, two major 'musts' if you're going to spend some time in a fondue joint. We were starving on a rainy day and figured we'd give Melting Pot a try. Our expectations were very low and besides the friendly service, the rest of the experience didn't really leave me wanting to return. We were seated very quickly without a reservation since we showed up just as they were opening for dinner. We both ordered frilly-lady cocktails which were sweet, tasty, but expensive for low amount of alcohol in them. We noticed there were lots of children around too...hmmm... We avoided the massive 4 course extravaganza, and went for the 3 course dinner for 2. This worked out in our favor since we were STUFFED by our third course. The cheese fondue appetizer was really yummy, and the dark brown rye was the only dipping that tasted right with the cheese mix. I noticed that regardless of the cheese chosen, the same dipping-stuffs were offered. Kinda lame. The salads were fine, but nothing we couldn't have made at home. We made the unfortunate choice to have the Coq au Vin with a meat selection that included seafood. Shrimp and Salmon have no business in a Coq au Vin. It shouldn't even be an option! Whoops! We had to ask someone else to get them for us. Seriously? You serve people food without making sure they have silverware and plates? Ridiculous! Then we had to wait forever for the check. I went here a couple of days ago with my boyfriend for a date night dinner, and it was delicious, there were just a few things I'd change. I had an excellent server, Guy, and he was extremely attentive and made sure to explain everything he was combining and was excellent at making casual conversation. He was helpful without being overbearing. The food itself was delicious but did have some hit or miss items. We just had the complimentary bouillon broth, but it was superb. We each did the four course dinner, which was a great experience throughout everything. My boyfriend had the surf and turf, and the way the chicken was seasoned was excellent, a bit of kick with it. I had ordered the sesame coated ahi tuna, which was sashimi grade but I was disappointed with it. It tasted entirely too fishy for me, especially since I expect tuna to be a buttery taste that isn't overpowered by the fish flavor. I didn't like that as the course of the meal went on, the broth seemed to soak up the seafood flavors of my boyfriends dish, when I'm not a fan of seafood it can be a little annoying. I think the best part of our meal was the dessert we had the cookies and cream chocolate dream, but we switched the dark chocolate for milk chocolate. Guy actually let us roast our marshmallows over the pot which was a really neat trick. Overall, I'd definitely be back, but I did find a couple of the dishes lacking their full potential but it may have been just the evening. The course was adequately filling but definitely not worth ~$90. If you want to really experience fondue, invest in a fondue pot from Bed Bath and Beyond. We ate here during restaurant week. This image shows their spinach artichoke fondu. It was tasty but there were hardly any artichokes or spinach (haha - I guess I had spinach and artichoke dip in my mind which is a lot greener but this is, indeed, fondu) - two of us (of four) ate it all. I felt myself craving veggies for this meal - probably because I ordered a Diet Coke and was thirty - next time I'll order water instead. It was fun but one small pot in the center of the table with four people is not enough room to cook your meats and fish in broth. We were fighting over the pot real estate. We were certainly full for our $30 per person and our server and the managers were very kind. They let us stay for three hours, on restaurant week! The chocolate fondu dolce was very good. I would have preferred more fruit (I should have ordered this) because it was super sweet when paired with the baked goods. I have been a patron of The Melting Pot over 25 years. It was the most romantic upscale restaurant in Raleigh 20 years ago. They have made many changes over the years. For me the romance is gone. The food is still good mainly because you cook it yourself. I still go there out of habit. My bill was nearly $250 with a bottle of wine and dessert. The hostess was nonchalant and aloof but server was friendly. If you are dining in the triangle there are many better options for sure. read more

Update 12/21/17: I took away one of their stars because they try to look good by acting like they care here on Yelp but no effort is made outside of that. They asked for my contact info a week ago, I gave it to them and got a thank you back so I know they got it, and that was the end of it. Nobody has called me. So if you get a crappy experience here, expect to just deal with it. Raleigh Melting Pot clearly doesn't care. I've been to The Melting Pot many times in WA and never had any issues. But this time was different. I don't know what was wrong but we got the oil/batter and no matter what we did, the batter came off the food. The waiter couldn't figure out what was wrong. We tried fresh batter, different temps for the oil, nothing changed the results - which was just greasy meat. For over $100 for two of us, greasy meat was not what we wanted. We eventually switched to the broth cooking method but that was just meh. It got the meat cooked, it just wasn't what we went for. Also, portion sizes were very small compared to the last time we went, which to be fair was a few years ago. Especially the salad was disappointing because that is one of my favorite parts and it has become very small. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely enough food, but since the prices aren't lower, I don't expect the portions to be so small. Our first time here last night was for my husband's birthday. Our waiter, named Jack, was truly wonderful and added greatly to our experience. Our child has a food allergy and he really took extra time to understand her dietary restriction, and made the celebration extra special. We had the 4-course experience and it's more food than we could handle. It may not look like a lot of protein pictured but trust me, it is a lot of food. We had a large group, which made it difficult to accommodate all of us at this type of place. We were packed like sardines at a 3 burner table into chairs that were extremely hard, and in multiple cases the seat portion was not even attached to the chair. No one could move or reach anything except those in the middle, so they ended up doing all the work for most of the table to try and cook and pass everything around. It was exhausting. Although our waitress was very accommodating, if not extremely over worked, she really had no room to maneuver either. The fondue idea seems like fun, but in reality your paying triple the price for minuscule portions that you have to cook yourself. You will leave hungry, frustrated and broke after spending your night trying (unsuccessfully) to fish overcooked meat from a boiling pot. It was over $250 for four people, and we had the pick 3/create your own, which didn't even come with salad. We had no idea if the bill was even right because it wasn't itemized. The two stars is for the food which, if I could be honest was a 4.5 but the service and experience was SO bad that I wasn't even sure how to rate the experience. I will start with our tab total for 4 people : $300.00 before the tip. Call me old fashioned but for $300 I expect more than Taco Bell service? And actually, the drive through staff at Taco Bell is much more friendly and accommodating. At one point during the meal I asked one of the servers for a tray and I cleared the dirty dishes ( that had been there over 30 minutes ) off our table myself. I would like to say our server Ethan ( who among other things informed us he knew nothing about wine or bar drinks ) provided the worst experience imaginable and the manager could have literally cared less either ‍. We have been patrons of the melting pot for years and myself and my husband paid our way through college waiting tables so we are fully aware of restaurant protocol and we normally have empathy for extenuating circumstances but this was just plain old fashioned bad service. The waitress Alexia was super knowledgeable about vegan food; she made recommendations, advised on cooking times and was extremely pleasant in spite of our "annoying special diet" requirements ;) Even tho it says online that Melting Pot is now offering vegan options, when I called the Durham location they didn't seem as open to accommodating us, which is why I called Raleigh. The host who answered the phone at Raleigh was enthusiastic and made it happen. They put notes in their system and were prepared to receive us with everything when we got there! Cheese was great, they used Follow Your Heart (we were dreading they might use Daiya) brand. Fruit and veggies were fresh, tofu was perfect. This is the best restaurant ever! I love the Dry Rub pork because it tastes so good with the sweet and sour sauce!! The chocolate is amazing as well! And with covid, they are more than ever prepared for it! The waiters wear masks as well! Trust me when I say that this is better than any other restaurant. Like angus barn or olive garden! Greeting at the door was unfriendly and unprofessional. The decor of this particular location is very underwhelming and just not very nice. We got the dessert because that's our favorite part at other locations; This one hurt our stomach and ruined the date night. read more

So I don't really crave cheese - there, I said it. That lactose-favoring elephant has been addressed. So you'll imagine the hearty belly laughs coming from my friends when I checked in at The Melting Pot: is black white? East west? Reconciling why I'd find myself perched pot-side had my regular circle a little confused. Confused, that is, until I explained the Beer. This Melting Pot location was hosting a series of Ommegang beer pairings that culminated in dark chocolate...infused with bacon. See, sometimes when you look at the finish line, you can see past all the work it may take to get there. The experience of hitting a Melting Pot is likely fairly consistent (I'd wager) from locale to locale, and fondue lovers know the drill - bring in a couple of pots of boiling cheese / broth / chocolate, mix in food items to dip in there, rinse, repeat. It can be an occasionally spendy if interesting experience, and the formula here has worked enough to coax a lingering dining evening (at least out of our group). And when you roll in some tasty craft brews from one of the breweries doing that very well in the US, well, friend, you may just have something there. read more
