The food is amazing. I had the bone marrow appetizer and chicken wings. The white Alabama Q sauce was delicious. The staff was very attentive but not intrusive. Went to the Midwestern with a group this weekend. We ordered the burger, beef ribs, pork ribs, a turkey leg, and several sides. The burger was soooo good...it was phenomenal. Definitely the highlight of the meal for me. The tomato jam on it was delish. The pork ribs were very good and nicely seasoned. The beef ribs were tasty, but a little over-priced in my opinion at $18 for a single rib bone. Turkey leg was good and had a nice crispy skin. As for the sides, they all seemed pretty mediocre. The mac n cheese and potato salad were fairly bland, fries were okay, and the cornbread was the worst I've had. It was so dry it was almost inedible. We weren't given butter for it, which could have made it slightly better but still probably couldn't redeem it. Service was wonderful. They're supposed to have free parking on weekends, but it was unavailable when we went. I think they may have been doing some construction. The atmosphere was nice, very big and open. Overall it was a good experience, I'll definitely be back for the burger and good service if nothing else. They are still new, so maybe working out some kinks. Service was great and friendly. There's a wide variety of beverages available. My ribs, collard greens and mac and cheese were fantastic. The corn bread was a bit dry but could easily be fixed by a little honey. Food came out very fast. Lots of choices for BBQ sauce. read more

I was a huge fan of Baby Q, working nearby I was there almost every week. Needless to say I was bummed when they closed, but eagerly awaited the opening of The Midwestern. Finally had a quiet Saturday to get downtown and check it out with the family. We had the turkey leg, the brisket, a burger, the deviled eggs, mac and cheese, collard greens, pickles, and a few drinks. The brisket was just as great as ever, the burger was outlandishly amazing, the familiar sides were just as good as ever, and the deviled eggs were fabulous. The drinks were great too. Great dinner at the Midwestern. My boyfriend and I needed some filling food and this delivered perfectly. The pulled pork had so much flavor and my boyfriend loved his burger. Had a fantastic meal here! Chef Ben Welch is amazing, and maintains the quality he had at Big Baby Q with an expanded menu, and expanded opportunities to impress. The double cheeseburger was delicious, and my fiancée enjoyed the pastrami (which held its high standards from the Big Baby Q days, where it was my personal fave). We also had the deviled eggs appetizer, and they were the best I've ever had! We had a couple of the house cocktails, and thoroughly enjoyed them, as well. The food was good but the seating process was a mess. I wouldn't come during a game with so many more places around. If you do go just bypass the server like others did to us and seat yourself. We had a reservation for Saturday night, June 1. There was a baseball game and a Blues game downtown and swatch party outside the Enterprise Center. Major storms delayed the baseball game and sent lots of people from the watch party to the Midwestern. The place was packed when we got there and staff was overwhelmed but the manager still found us a table and sent a server right over. Read all the reviews but still decided it was worth a try. Went in around 5:00 pm after a Sunday Cardinals game. Only a handful of customers were there. We had Mario as our server. He was was friendly and outgoing. We ordered a Manhattan cocktail and a Cadillac Margarita. The Margarita was not on the menu but several cocktails utilizing Tequila were. However Mario our server and also the bartender had absolutely no idea how to make a margarita. It took well over 15 minutes for our cocktails to arrive. Did I mention there were only a handful of customers there? We ordered the deviled eggs as an appetizer and the sampler platter as the entree. The appetizer was delivered at the same time. Not really acceptable but ok, I'll deal with it. The sampler platter consists of pulled pork, two very large wings, three rib bones, smoked turkey, brisket and pastrami. Every meat was well smoked, properly seasoned and very tender and tasty. But here's is major issue. All the meat was cool to the touch and the pulled pork was just downright cold. Mario quickly took the platter back at our request. Shortly there after the manager returned with our platter explaining that's the temperature smoked meats should be. I respectfully told the manager that I strongly disagreed with him. I've eaten smoked meats out hundreds on times and also smoked my own meat. Sorry, smoked meats should not be cool to the touch or even cold when served. So, I you don't mind cold smoked meats, definitely give this place a try. read more

Nice decor, although the chairs weigh about 1 ton each. Service is ridiculously fast. Waitress was nice. Food: super dry ribs, over cooked , less than average - wont get them again, couldn't feel the jalapeño heat in the potato salad, very good and warm pit beans. Burrata toast - good concet, but flavorless. Add salt and pepper. The best part was my little side butter lettuce caesar salad. Burgers from other people's orders looked great tho. Salads looked great too. For it being a meat place definitely expected way more from the ribs. read more

Food-I ordered the confit turkey legs, mac&cheese, and the bone marrow. Let me tell you, the food was FANTASTIC. Meat was tender and full of flavor. Mac&Cheese was better than your grandma's best and the bone marrow was very unique and delicate. Out of everything, the only thing I would have liked was for the meat to be warmer. It was all the way cooked because they smoked it, but as i got to the center, it was colder than I would have liked. Drink- the bartenders clearly know their s***. They asked what style of drink I am generally drawn to, and they gave me options upon options. The presentation was on point and beyond pleasant to drink. Staff- ^^^ Very willing to sit and describe any of their 200 whiskeys on the menu. Also the managers and chef walked around and asked how we were. When a place is new, there is nothing better in my opinion. You feel like you are at grandma's and cannot wait to go back. Setting- they are clearly detail oriented. everything was absolutely impeccable. I have never seen a western joint made with such class and detail without looking shabby. Overall- I thought I would have been able to find more things I did not prefer but all the hype is well deserved. just get some warmers for the food. The Midwestern is brand new to downtown STL. Went there during the week and the food was good. I'm not a BBQ expert by any means so take my review with a grain of salt. The wings were good, really good flavoring. For dinner we got the brisket sandwich and the ribs platter with Mac and cheese and the jalapeno potato salad. The brisket was great. Would have liked some sauce on it but it was delicious. The ribs were also very good. The Mac and cheese was alright. Was expecting it to be delicious but it was just okay. Server was incredibly rude to my girlfriend and I. He threatened to throw us out because she was resting her head on the table while she was dehydrated and having a migraine. He immediately assumed that she was black out drunk. After I explained that she wasn't even old enough to drink and that she was just sick, he told us that we had to leave and call an uber. I understand you are not supposed to sleep in a bar but he didnt even bother to ask if she was ok or apologize for enforcing the policy on someone who is ill. On top of that, the food was mediocre and the bad service leaves an even worse taste in your mouth. I'll never eat at this restaurant again nor will any of my friends or family. read more

I took my Dad and Fiancé here for dinner. I believe it used to be The Flying Saucer. We each had 3 ribs and one side dish. Greens and Mac n Cheese. I am a BBQ snob. I am eating my way through BBQ restaurants from TX, TN, STL, and KC. I had a BBQ Pit-master/restaurant owner recommend The Midwestern. I had high expectations. I sat arrived shortly after 6p and did not have to wait (which I was expecting). The restaurant is spacious and quite inviting. When the waitress came to the table to take my drink order, she advised they were out of the majority of their meats. That should have been my clue. I ordered the Fried Green Tomatoes for an appetizer. They came out the same time as my meal and the breading was bland and the tomatoes were chewy. I had the choice of Turkey, Pastrami, or Pulled Pork. I chose the Pulled Pork, with pickles and fries. The fries, Pulled Pork and corn bread arrived cold. I had several pieces of bark that were inedible. I would say average pulled pork. The cornbread that came on the plate was also super dry. The pickles were fantastic...best part of the meal. Granted I may have tried the Brisket or Ribs if available. This Texan was not impressed. Go for the atmosphere not the food. read more

Went in on a Friday night before a Cardinals game. We were greeted and sat as soon as we walked in. Our server "Katie" was excellent! She provided recommendations for food and drink options, she was spot on with everything she recommended. I can't find too many places in the area that serve beef ribs. I was so excited to hear that the Midwestern has these as a special on the weekend. They are worth the weekly wait! I have celiac sprue, unable to have gluten, so after calling twice to reassure that I could find something safe to eat....I decided to try it. They offer a gluten free bun on the menu that lead me to believe they knew a little about things. The manager I spoke to on phone was very friendly and helpful. Basically, when getting there it was a disaster. I ended up with the burger on a gf bun with a bowl of lettuce for my side. I had the manager come out and I continued to ask questions because i was getting mixed signals. He tried, but def didn't have enough knowledge about this. I ate my meal with a bit of hesitation and ended up getting sick. Thanks to the Midwestern....I will feel sick for a week now. Don't go if have gluten allergy!! read more

We visited on a Sunday, late afternoon, after the Cardinals game. The restaurant was about a third full. All our food came out COLD or LUKEWARM at best. What a disappointment, especially at the prices. The Midwestern has to decide whether it wants to mainly be a bar with so-so food or a great restaurant with great beer selection.
