Came here with friends for some drinks and food. Waitress recommended the Nashville hot chicken sandwich.... Literally the nastiest food I've ever eaten. I've never in my life not eaten the food that was served to me, mostly because I don't like to waste food, but also because I spent money to eat it and I'm a hungry girl. But this was a FIRST. I been to The Midwestern twice, each time for a special event. But believe me when I tell you it won't be the last. Because I absolutely, postively, have to come back for those wings!!!! Those wings man, those wings!!! The last time I went was on 11/4 to pick up my Passport. And I was so happy that The Midwestern was the pickup point. Their menu describes the wings as smoked, fried, dry rub, Alabama white Q sauce! And that what its made of! And boy is it made of!!! Smoked and fried? That combo already make a amazing wing! But add to add dry rub and white Q sauce too! Baybe! That makes one of a wing!!!! But The Midwestern have other offerings on their menu like fried green tomatoes, and brisket sandwiches that is tempting my tastebuds. I actually saw one the brisket sandwich that fellow Passporter was eating and it was so massive, she had to get a doggie bag! The service was great! Our server Angie ( I might got her name wrong, I'm bad with names) was wonderful and quick. She never left us stranded. And The Midwestern is a kick ass place to hang out! Watch for injuries when trying to move or manage the heavy ones. My family and I had a group of 12 people. We made a reservation 3 days in advance for a table at 6:45 during the Blues game. My parents walked by at 4:30 knowing it was going to be busy and asked the hostess if our 6:45 reservation was still good and she assured us it was. When we showed up at 6:30 the manager told us there were no tables and they would not be honoring our reservation. He told us, "I don't care how mad you get we aren't making someone else get up. I have other stuff to deal with." I get that it was a busy night but they really didn't treat us very well. I came here for "312 Day" hosted by Goose Island and part of the event was a buffet of some of their standard items. It was nice because all and all I was able to try their pulled pork, ribs, wings, and several sides. The ribs and wings were both excellent. I loved the seasoning of the dry rubbed wings--no sauce needed! I do enjoy having a variety of sauces available with my BBQ and the Midwestern covered that. A great southern-style white sauce and STL sweet bbq sauce. Based on the food alone I would come back. I'm a bbq enthusiast and while this isn't the best I've had it was good and the atmosphere is great. High-Ceilings, big space with plenty of seating, a large bar with tons of seating, and a great outdoor space that will now be enjoyable as we head into baseball season and the summer months. I've heard really great things about the burgers which is what I plan on trying next time I come back. Stopped into the Midwestern last night and true to form the meal was wonderful. We have been here several times an have even ordered carry out on a couple of instances. They have both indoor and patio seating. The cocktails we sampled were flavorful and strong and the drink menu is extensive. They have a good selection of beer on draught, or in cans. For starters we have tried the Chicken Wings, Fried Green Tomatoes, and the Smoked Deviled Eggs. All of them were good, but the Chicken Wings have become one of my favorite things about this place. When it comes to BBQ we have tried the Brisket, Ribs, and the Pulled Pork. All of these choices are good, but the Brisket has become one of our all-time favorites. For sides I would recommend the Mac-n-Cheese, or Pit Beans. Cornbread and Sorghum Butter is served with the platters, but it is worth it to order some extra and take home. read more

In spite of Mardi Gras AND the Blues game, I convinced Husband to brave driving and parking...plus Funky Butt Brass Band! Wow-who could resist!?! About that... the band was set up out back on the heated patio....ok...but a $10 cover??! They really didn't have tables set up out there to eat, the whole setup seemed an afterthought or at the very least not well-thought out =( That really squelched my excitement and they lost a star on this review. A bit annoyed that they carded this gray haired reviewer especially since I never take id purse etc into a restaurant-H pays, one of the reasons I love him! So he had to go back to the car and retrieve id before I cld get past bouncer who barely glanced at it when presented-yeah,he knew... Our server could have made this a five-star review-she was AWESOME!! So sad I dont remember her name. Perky pleasant fun knowledgeable- she was excellent. H had their new old fashioned and I had the blood and sand. Friend had the 9to5 mule. One of the TEN bartenders brought our drinks over. Wow. Mood picking up a bit. Then we tried the nachos. O. M. G. Yes. We topped it w the brisket-delicious. I loved the candied jalapeños! On top of fries or chips. Don't pass this up. Onto entrees: we split the pastrami. So now you'll know the reason for another star taken off- sadly it came barely warm- a big pet peeve of H. It also did not taste smoked or rubbed, but it was tender lean and flavorful . It came with two sides: we got the beans and Mac n cheese. The beans were pretty bland-no Smokey flavor-no chewy bacon. H loved the Mac n cheese-hot n cheesy. We added another aide: the Cole slaw, which was not especially memorable. Friends each got a turkey leg. It was juicy but not too smokey it still tasted like turkey(sometimes smoked turkey tastes like ham-ick) One thing this east coast gal has come to expect from STL bbq are sauces. Sadly our lovely server brought us only three sauces in tiny cups one set per couple. This seemed a bit paltry. The sauces were not distinctive either. I always look for the sauce to take the meat over the top. Not! So off came another star. On the plus side, the wood tables ARE remarkable (as is the bar top). We lucked into a booth which gave us a lovely view of the stadium and large televisions. And while H LOVED the retro rock (I'm embarrassed to admit he knew EVERY song!) I thought it was a tad too loud for conversation. Overall, the service was outstanding (this is one thing you would expect to be lacking on opening weekend) and the food was above average. I enjoyed this establishment the first few times I went, however the last handful of times I have visited, bouncers and managers have been nothing short of disrespectful. The bartenders and waitresses I have had interactions with have been incredibly genuine and accommodating. One night my friends and I walked up to get it and were pushed by bouncers and told they were at capacity. Capacity is fine, but it is never okay to put your hands on a patron if not warranted. Period. I have talked with others who have had the same experiences as myself. I understand the world right now is not where we all would like it, however that is by no means an excuse to push or yell at patrons, especially when approaching them for the first time. Managers and bouncers have aggressively yelled at others I have spoken to regarding the unprofessionalism. When instating rules and regulations, managers/bouncers do not follow them, and aggressively approach and yell at patrons to abide. Again, I understand the situation at hand, however, attempting to use a position of "power" to berate and demean customers, or talk to them sarcastically and unprofessional is unwarranted and cause for problems. read more

The atmosphere is awesome! Very cool looking place. Our server was super friendly and very attentive. We had very high hopes but were sadly disappointed. We ordered the sampler because we wanted to try everything. We also ordered the smoked eggs and their salad. The eggs and the salad were delicious! We did, however, wish there wasn't as much smoked rub on them. The pastrami on the sampler platter was the highlight of all the smoked meat. This place definitely knows how to cook their meat but they are overly fond of the rub and it is thickly coating everything to the point where we used a knife to scrape it off. Why put so much effort into properly cooking meat only to kill it by overly covering it with a rub?! The ribs unfortunately were overly smoked/cooked, extremely dry, cold and covered with 1/4" of that rub. My thought was those ribs needed to be kept in the kitchen and used to flavor their beans instead of trying to serve them to their customers. Awful. Someone needs to share with their kitchen staff that a little seasoning goes a long way. I get the whole "we have a signature seasoning" thing but enough already. It's a shame that this was our experience as we really wanted to like this place. Again, the server was very attentive and friendly and it was a busy night. I ordered a $10 glass of Sauvignon Blanc and when our server brought it I thought there had been a mistake. There were only about four swallows in there - no joke. Our server was so helpful and told the manager our complaint but I should not have had to complain. He topped off my wine but it was still a total rip off. Again, looked pretty but nothing too special in terms of taste. Had a last breakfast sangria to close. Not my place for brunch. First time we had the sample platter which was ok but this time I ordered the beef ribs which they only have on the weekend and are an absolute homerun. Went with a group of coworkers and really enjoyed the food, drink and atmosphere, great service too! There are pages and pages of drinks for every taste. I enjoyed trying two of the KY Bourbons recommended by the beverage lead (Willet Family Pot Still and Noah's Mill) and others in the party had scotch or beer. For food, we had brisket (outstanding) , smoked turkey leg (outstanding but ask them to skip the sauce or put it on the side because I thought it distracted), St. Louis ribs (not my favorite style but others in the party liked them), and smoked turkey breast. Several different sauces depending on your personal preference. Sides included some of the best collards I have ever tried, pit beans (outstanding) , mac & cheese, coleslaw, and pickles. All good. Went to the Midwestern with a group this weekend. We ordered the burger, beef ribs, pork ribs, a turkey leg, and several sides. The burger was soooo good...it was phenomenal. Definitely the highlight of the meal for me. The tomato jam on it was delish. The pork ribs were very good and nicely seasoned. The beef ribs were tasty, but a little over-priced in my opinion at $18 for a single rib bone. Turkey leg was good and had a nice crispy skin. As for the sides, they all seemed pretty mediocre. The mac n cheese and potato salad were fairly bland, fries were okay, and the cornbread was the worst I've had. It was so dry it was almost inedible. We weren't given butter for it, which could have made it slightly better but still probably couldn't redeem it. Service was wonderful. They're supposed to have free parking on weekends, but it was unavailable when we went. I think they may have been doing some construction. The atmosphere was nice, very big and open. Overall it was a good experience, I'll definitely be back for the burger and good service if nothing else. They are still new, so maybe working out some kinks.
