I've come here before for breakfast a couple times and it's always been ok-good, but nothing like the dinner menu which was amazing! The server was attentive and helpful with suggestions and although the restaurant was full, dinner came out very fast and we weren't left waiting (which is great cause we were starving). Portions are huge, price is very reasonable, and everything was spiced to perfection. My only criticism might be the apple cranberry pie- the crust was a little bland and heavy. Although I'm not vegetarian, I was really looking forward to trying the Naam when I moved to Vancouver as it has been billed as the city's premier veg restaurant. However, I found it underwhelming. When we arrived, there was a pretty long wait which I took as a good sign. I had the famous Naam burger, which was a merely ok, homemade veggie burger, but nothing spectacular. The potatoes and the miso gravy were good, but my husband wept with disappointment over his tempeh reuben. Everything on our plates was buried under a mountain of salad. Even our vegetarian friends with us were not impressed. The beer list was lackluster as well. It seems to me that vegetarian restaurants seem to fall into two camps: the hippie holdovers and innovative, newer restaurants. The Naam definitely falls into the former category as I don't think they've changed their menu since 1978. The chefs at the Naam would be well served by checking out some of the newer veggie restaurants in North America, like Millennium in San Francisco and Watercourse in Denver. These restaurants succeed in being places were both vegetarians and omnivores want to eat. I do have to give it big ups for being open 24 hours, which is a rarity in Canada. read more

Cons: slow service (waited long time for order to be taken), bad service, generic food Pros: seated quickly, food brought quickly, big portions, cheap prices I spontaneously ate at the Naam for the first time last weekend, and I was very disappointed. The first sentence of their website describes the restaurant as being "very busy", yet the service was slow and bad. If the restaurant itself claims to be busy, then they should be prepared for that. While my boyfriend and I were seated very quickly, we had to wait to have our menus brought to us, and then waited a long time for our order to be taken. We had many different servers tending to us, which meant the service was inconsistent. The menu is exactly what you expect from any vegetarian restaurant, which I was very disappointed about. I am a vegetarian and from the rave reviews that I had heard about the Naam, I was expecting some creative menu ideas. But, no, just the same old things that every veggie place seems to serve. By the time my order was taken I had forgotten what I wanted, and didn't remember that there were two options: noodles or rice, until my food was brought to me and I noticed that something seemed wrong. Needless to say, my server did not ask me which option I wanted when I ordered. The portions were big and the prices were cheap for the amount of food, so it's easy to go home with leftovers. Been going to the Naam since I got to Vancouver. Mostly to see the folks who come here. Most interesting patrons I've every seen. Hippies, business people, young families. I guess everyone is health conscious or they wold not come here. I really like their food. I wish they had those super cheap breakfasts on weekdays. As a student I used to live on that meal! I personally adore the naam. And, I am not one to leave negative reviews . i had some of the worst service last time though and i believe it is worth making a note of. When my group went to pay we asked for the bill to be split. The server ( short hispanic lady with long hair) rolled her eyes and exclaimed it's busy i don't have the time. This completely caught me off guard as I have had nothing but great experiences in the past and they always split our bill no problemo. She was quite confrontational when we insisted the bill had to split. I muttered "wow that was some shitty service" she confronted me and asked if I had an issue. After a long day, Naam was a great place to relax and unwind. Vegan options are clearly marked, and Daiya could easily be substituted over dairy cheese. I ordered the dragon bowl, which was A LOT of food, but this hungry girl devoured it all with room for dessert! We ordered the hot apple crisp with Tofutti ice-cream for dessert, simply amazing. Everything was delicious and the food arrived in a timely manor. Our server was real nice and attentive, he recommended a Canadian beer (the name escapes me), but he definitely knew what he was talking about- great beer! It didn't really bother me, but the only downside would have to be how close together the tables were arranged, so if you're claustrophobic Naam probably isn't your first choice. read more

Food was good but overall I think it's overrated. My husband got the Tofu Dog Platter, which was very good and different. It was rolled in a chapati with cheese, with a huge side salad. I got the Asian noodle soup. It was fine but not very flavorful - I kept thinking of all different spices and flavors that could be added to make it a little more interesting. Kitchen is a little slow, and service is a little inattentive (but all the servers seem very down to earth, not like crappy Meet on Main), but seriously the food is the real deal. The Naam is by far one of the best all vegetarian restaurants I've ever been to. Situated in the quaint Kitsilano neighborhood and open 24 hours, there really is no better place to go for a late night eat or a Sunday brunch! The menu is packed with variety - from Mexican to Indian to Italian, the possibilities are endless. (PS. their blueberry smoothie is "to die for") Every visit to The Naam, I make sure to order something new, and I have never been disappointed. The staff is always super friendly (and a little eccentric), but they always have something to suggest if you just can't decide on what you want. Vegan or Regular, it comes with eggs (how you like 'em or a tofu subsitution), 2 large pancakes, 2 totally yummy veggie sausages or sam's strips, homefries & miso gravy. Nomming at the Naam - made me WANT to turn vegetarian. I am so glad my friend and I decided to come here for dinner- after two weeks of grazing unhealthily on pizza pops, chips, ben & jerry's (don't judge - it's exam time :P) my guts were surprised see so much foreign green material appear in their tract. It being my first time here, I ordered the Naam bowl - a rice bowl packed with broccoli, carrots, alfalfa, tofu, beets, and their famous miso gravy. Tons of flavor and I felt soo good after eating such a healthy meal! Really made me think going vegetarian wouldn't be that hard - sure it probably does require a lot more prep/planning to get the right nutrition and some creativity to mix up different flavors - but honestly, after trying out their rice bowl - I felt soo healthy, even a bit detoxed haha. They sell their miso gravy by the bottle! I regret not buying some right away - but I will make sure to pick some up next time so I can start concoctioning my own rice bowls! We also had the hot apple crisp for dinner - umm ya, just melt-in-your-mouth goodness. The chai latte was decent, but I'd have to say it tasted a little bit dilute for my preference. We went on a Sunday and they had a guitarist there playing some tunage as well. Added a nice touch to our experience. I never, ever go to Vancouver without going to the Naam. Usually I go there at least twice in a weekend trip. Once I went twice in one day. It is open 24 hours a day, after all. We just don't have a vegetarian restaurant with vegan options nearby quite like this. Maybe it wouldn't be so special if it weren't so far away, but I have a lot of fond Naam memories. If you only have one chance to stop at the Naam, do yourself a favor and get something with the miso gravy on top. If you love yourself, get the sesame fries with miso gravy. I have brought bottles of the stuff back to the States, and I've even worked to make a pretty respectable miso gravy at home when I get the craving. I love it that much. Vegans, this place is completely vegetarian with more vegan options than you can usually expect to find. Those options even include a blueberry soy shake. If you have a tremendous vegan appetite, get the Naam burger platter. You'll get the famous fries plus a generous and refreshing salad with your choice of non-dairy dressings. You will be happily stuffed without feeling disgusting. Good service. Attentive, friendly. Great sauces, very enjoyable. Would definitely recommend the artichoke green sauce they have. I believe they do sell those in bottles. Portions are good, it will most definitely fill you up. Now the reason for 3 stars. Food need salt. It needs to have flavour, to be seasoned. You can't have a plate where 2/3 of the food is steamed vegetable and greens and not compensate with a flavourful main dish. You have many sauces, homemade that are fantastic. Incorporate it more into your food, it will make it taste better. When you're a vegetarian/vegan restaurant that charges fairly high for your food, you can't just expect to sell off your healthy and trendy image. The food need to have flavour. But if you're looking for somewhere to get really great priced food for big portions and a lot of options to choose from for Vegan or vegetarians at any time of the day.... this is your place. Don't get me wrong, they are attentive but there isn't any bullshit hierarchy of servers to customers like most higher end restaurants, this place will make you feel like you're a part of a community of Vancouver locals. Service is usually shit. It's the busiest restaurant around, true, but a 45 minute wait after being seated and ordering is a bit over my threshold. One the other hand, I did have the best service I ever had there recently (which is to say he came to the table to check on us several times - not just once to take the order and once to drop the food in front of me), where the guy was very attentive when one of my party had dietary restrictions. Maybe they raised the wages. This bodes well for a future 4 star rating. Food is great. Grated beets on every salad -- one of the best ways to eat a beet. I LOVE the food at the Naam, their thai coconut curry dish being my fave. The reason I am not giving them 5 stars is because, though the food is excellent, the service isn't. I have some food allergies that make it difficult for me to eat out. Last time I was at the Naam I was unable to eat the dish the way they served it to me the first time, but the chef was accommodating in remaking my order so I was able to eat it. Though the servers seem to hate their job, as long as you are friendly and understanding towards them they seem to lighten up a bit. I don't blame them though, the restaurant is busy and the food is cheap so they probably don't get tipped as much as they should be for the amount of work they do. read more

I stopped in for a snack during my bike ride. The server was slow and had obviously more tables than he could handle. I sat down and my server along with others walked by multiple times before I was acknowledged. (I worked as a server so I have lots of patience and understanding for the service industry but I honestly almost walked out.) Once the server came by I ordered the sesame fries with the miso gravy. Okay, so I've been going to The Naam for a little while now as it's a staple for vegetarians who live in the city, but up until last night I won't be going there again. Now, as a cook who has worked in the restaurant industry for 10 years now, I understand what it's like to work during a busy dinner rush, but never have I ever refused to take a customers takeout order because it's too busy. This happened last night when I tried to place an order over the phone for pick up when I was just finishing my shift. I called and attempted to place my order, and was told they couldn't do my takeout order because they were too busy during dinner. This restaurant has been my go-to when I finish my shift as it is open 24 hours a day, but this is the first time ever that I've been refused to have my order taken. So hear me out as a very disappointed customer, don't let this happen again. Restaurants get busy, it's part of the job, but the only time that you should deny service is when a customer should have to wait to sit down because every table is full, not because it is too busy to take an order for takeout. Also, the waiters/waitresses could smile more, whenever I go in there everyone who works there looks miserable and like they don't want to be there. read more

The Naam is a fantastic restaurant that I often visit. Their Sesame Fries are what everyone needs to have when going there. And remember to order it with both, cheese and miso gravy. They are to die for! Their Chili Deluxe is absolutely amazing too and it is so big, I have not generally been able to finish it in one sitting. Most of their meals are so big that it will definitely fill up anyone! The Naam is a small restaurant that is most often packed. So if you want to go there during dinner time, you better go knowing you might have to wait in line. As it is open 24hrs, it tends to be quite busy even at 3am. Vancouver's late night food scene (or rather lack thereof) was a hole that had yet to be filled in my heart. So when we came to the Naam under many recommendations, this restaurant literally made our night. Chill atmosphere if you go late at night and in the afternoon. If you go during the dinner rush though, get ready to wait until your stomach is screaming purgatory. The food is fucking amazing and you don't have to feel guilty after engorging your digestive tract with this delicious goodness - all of it is damn good for you. I'm sounding very much like a broken record here but I have to definitely echo the sentiments of everyone who raves about the miso gravy. It's gotta be laced with crack to be that good. I felt pretty overwhelmed with how many critics and papers have reviewed this place, and when I came in I had no idea what to order. None. Other than the fries. I wish the menu had some pictures, it would've made my choice much easier! I had the enchilada platter, with the chicaleque (?) enchilada. It just was not good. Lots of cheese, which I guess is good, but the vegetables had this really unpleasant taste, and so did the salad, it was huge and really hard to distribute the dressing with so little room on the plate. I guess I was supposed to eat the shredded carrots and beets alone? What if I didn't want to? Fries were ok, but sort of boring, I don't really get all what all the fuss was about at all. I actually really didn't like this meal. Last time that happened was at Sushiyama, and it is rare for me. I mean I may get too full, but I don't actually dislike what I'm having. This place is great! Generous portions, lots of interesting choices, good food! They have it all, except that they really need new furniture! It's a bit of a hipster looking place. I love it, but I wish it was a bit cleaner inside! Service is great, I tried Enchiladas and Sam's Burger with fries. Both delicious! I absolutely LOVE The Naam! It is entirely vegetarian (and often vegan), and as so many menu items to choose from that it is going to take me a long time to try them all. I have been to The Naam 4x thus far, and I've ordered something different each time and LOVED it every time. An added bonus is that they are open 24/7, so no vegetarian or vegan will go unfed! Personally, I know the value of this because many of the diners that are open 24/7 do not cater to the vegetarian/vegan population. read more

First of all, I'm not a vegetarian but that's not the reason why I didn't give The Naam an additional star. I ordered the Thai dragon bowl and the serving was generous, as with the other dishes my friends ordered. The coconut curry sauce was a good compliment to the fresh veggies and I really liked the grated beets and carrots on top. I'm always drawn to some spicy foods and yet I eventually have trouble with it to the point where it slows down my eating. This was one of those dishes. Nonetheless, every morsel was still good. The organic blueberry pie was a disappointment. I'm quite used to blueberry pies where the blueberries spill out of the slice. Not sure what was going on with this one but the filling was perfectly compacted into the slice. I asked for it warm but I'm not sure it would've made a difference cold. Anyway, it tasted like someone filled the pie with a blueberry fruit roll-up or fruit leather. That's really odd to me! I'm still trying to figure out if the blueberries were dried or maybe they added a little too much cornstarch to bind those blueberries together? The best dessert on the table was the Shakti cake. Moist, tender goodness. I wish my blueberries were as moist as that Shakti cake. Other than the food, the restaurant can get pretty loud. When we got there around 630pm, we managed to get a table but the place was quite busy. Like others have said, it could look a little cleaner (and so could our server! We arrived around 2pm on a Saturday and this place was packed with a line out the door. Within 15 mins we had a table for 2 and orange/strawberry juice on the way (Mmmmm!). Needless to say service was fast and efficient. Vegan items are clearly marked on the menu, so no guessing or additional inquiries required. This was a big relief. I had the Naam Burger Platter and despite being ravenous when I arrived, was barely able to finish it all. Everything was delicious and the portions were quite large. Overall, our experience here was excellent and the food was a very good value for the money. Went for brunch on Sunday 1030 ish. No line up at all! There were 10 of us and they accommodated us right away at the patio area and turn the heater on for us as it was still little chilly in the morning. Food was amazing and really big portion. I hade Loco Moco and I loved it. I had a bite of my friend's croissant breakfast that came with vegetables sausages and eggs and that was really good too.
