After my longtime salon, "Hello Birdie in North Park", closed its doors on June 30 after 11 wonderful years, I found myself needing a new place in a pinch. My nails had over three weeks of growth, and with an upcoming conference, it was definitely time for a refresh. I was paired with Crystal, and she was fantastic! She was friendly, attentive, and really took the time to understand exactly what I wanted. She even took a photo of the nail design I showed her, recreated it on one nail first, and asked for my feedback before continuing. I suggested one small tweak to make it my own, and she perfected it before moving on to the rest. Once we had the design just right, it was smooth sailing from there. The entire appointment took about 60 minutes, which I really appreciated, and the pricing was very reasonable and comparable to what I was paying at my previous salon. The salon itself was clean, bright, and inviting. The only adjustment for me was that it was busier than I'm used to. Having come from a smaller boutique salon with just a few nail artists, the weekend crowd felt a bit more bustling than my preference. Unfortunately, it seems like you have to leave a negative review to get any response. I emailed the salon about my experience and was completely ignored. I booked a full acrylic set and asked for almond-shaped nails, but left with short, chunky nails despite asking the technician three times to fix the shape. She was also extremely rough with filing and buffing, cutting the skin around my nails. I left with acrylic all over my cuticles and tender, painful skin. She even used acetone around the fresh cuts, which burned badly. Very disappointing experience, especially after giving the salon a chance to address it privately. read more

I have been coming to this place for quite a few years now, definitely not religiously, but when I do get my nails done this is the place I come to. I am not sure if it's the new thing to do, but I normally always get regular polish. This time around when I asked for a French tip regular polish with a light pink base coat they say they can't do it..... it's like ever since gel polish came out( and they charge an extra fee for it) they can't do anything with regular polish. Almost like the early 2k's weren't the rulers of this era and we all did it with regular polish! I love the service, my nails always look great, I am just not so happy with the super pushy feeling to get gel poli. As I sat here getting my nails done another client asked for a regular pedicure without color and asked for a pinky top coat rather than clear, the technician said "sorry we don't do that here, it's only gel"...... well that's a first for a nail salon to not do a different color top coat that's not clear regular polish. read more

After doing some research, I learned that Gel-X is a service that uses full cover tips for length extensions. However, during the appointment, I did not see any tips or extensions being applied, so it did not look like a Gel-X service. It looked like a regular gel manicure. I also later checked and saw that the price for Gel-X is listed as $65, but I was charged $70. There was no clear explanation about the pricing beforehand. I was looking for a place in SD that did cute nails and stumbled upon this shop while doing a yelp search. They were able to take me as a walk in which I was grateful for and the salon itself is cute and clean. I got gelx with design which turned out cute but I had to dock a few points for procedures and carelessness. My nail technician used a regular nail file at the end to even out the bottom of the nails but her file had really sharp edges and she pressed into my finger with so much force, it cut into my skin on both sides. I've NEVER had that happen to me before, I've experienced a few cuticle nicks here and there but this cut was deep enough to make me bleed and ask for a bandaid after they told me to wash my hands and pose for pictures. The picture I included here is a few hours after the service, after I had treated it with Neosporin and let the wound close. This nail salon also does not trim your cuticles. They also don't provide any cuticle oil or lotion so my hands were feeling pretty dry afterwards. Not sure if this is common practice in SD, but it was a first for me. I was pleasantly surprised when they put sunscreen on my hands before I put my fingers into the UV lamp though! If I were to return, I'd schedule an appointment with a different nail tech. read more

Me and my daughter went to get pedicures July 3rd before going on a vacation. Everything was going fine until it came to painting my toes. I tried explaining to the nailtech that it was too much polish on my toes and asked her to clean the sides of my toes. She said she will and will file them after. It took her a while to do my french tip and by that time I was ready to go. Once I got home and actually looked at my toes the paint is very sloppy and looks horrible. When it comes to my daughters toes her polish is already coming off, they always say gel is better because it doesn't come off but her polish is off on one toe and chipping on a few other toes. Let me set the stage: I am not a bougie girl, but I *do* care about service quality and the value I get for what I pay. This is my neighborhood nail salon and it's perfect in that way - clean, consistent, not too fancy, kind of quirky in a way I love, and a solid value. Been coming here now over 2 years and it's a consistently great place. I always make an appointment (come on now - it's Mission Valley! Call ahead! haha) - and have never had to wait more than 5-10min even on a weekend. The staff are always so, so friendly and do an AMAZING job. I love Lisa and Ava - detail oriented, perfect gel pedicure, zero accidental pinches or clips or other mistakes I have experienced elsewhere - but honestly all of staff have been so good to me. Their lotion and scrubs smell SO GOOD! Pricing also really fair for San Diego. Every once in a while I go elsewhere and regret it. I would recommend this place no question. As an example - once I was there when this other lady came in and wanted her black toenail polish removed and a new color done in 45 min because she was on her lunch break. Long story short, she was being EXTRA and really rude about a lot of things that were more related to her choice to have black toenail polish than anything the staff were doing. Anyway, I was so impressed at the way the staff handled it - the "customer is always right" almost to a fault, and they were kind when I would have LOST it at her.
