I hate judging a place on one meal, but I move around a lot for work and it's what I must do unfortunately. The food I did have was great- I ordered the special of the day which was the lazy tacos. You have a choice of meat- I picked pulled steak. Really flavorful and excellent. The ambiance is a bit subpar, and the clientele do not make it much better. Looots of geezers, nobody with much life in them to be found. Anywhere. At all. In absolute fairness, it was around 4-5pm. Pretty early, but we were starving after a 6 hour flight. So this could have contributed. Service is great, I almost always find something to nit-pick, but I really can't this time. Food came quick and fresh, the check was brought promptly at the right time, refills were frequent. It was neither too much or too little...just right. Definitely come here for a good meal, the whole menu looks fantastic. If the rest of the food tastes like my tacos did...they got a good thing going. read more

This place has been so highly recommended to us for years and years. We finally had a free afternoon and decided to try it for lunch. We were sadly very disappointed. First to start our waitress was the most miserable person. She had zero customer service. Chips and salsa was average. Margaritas were awesome! The menu was interesting, as we thought it was a Mexican restroom (probably our mistake for not investigating). We ordered the stuffed chili rellenos. We were excited to see you could have them filled with meat, a rarity. We selected the tenderloin. To our surprise, it was filled with over peppered ground beef, at best. Also, it was breaded in breadcrumbs, not a fluffy batter like others. Rice and beans were not to our liking either. It's rather hard to season whole pinto beans. The chimichanga was fine, nothing too bad or too good. Unfortunate, to say the least. read more

It is hard to believe, but we have been patrons of The Original Blue Adobe Grille for over 13 years and we have been delinquent as we have not posted a review. We believe it has the best cuisine of New Mexico or Mexico for that matter. Not only in the greater valley area, but anywhere. We used to frequent it about every other Sunday until they began closing on Sunday so as to be open on Mondays Mary Jo absolutely loves the chicken enchiladas and normally orders the Santa Cafe plate with three of them. I usually also order the Santa Cafe, but have two shredded beef burros and a chicken enchilada. On occasion, we both have had a cheese chili relleno and it is extremely good as well. If it seems like allot of food, you are right. We never finish it all, but they willingly provide boxes for us to take it home and enjoy a second meal. The chips and salsa are also delicious and the service is always attentive. We reside in North Scottsdale, some 25 miles one way to The Blue Adobe. It is well worth the drive and the gas money. We are forced to now go on Saturdays and we do so at least once a month. We are real foodies and take our word for it and give The Blue Adobe a try. read more

I liked this place. The menu is large, and I love the smokiness of New Mexican cuisine. I had the plate where you pick 2 items. I had a chili relleno and an enchilada. It came with pretty typical rice and beans. I had iced tea which was refilled often, had plenty of ice, and tasted fresh. The service was great despite the crowd. Was introduced to this place by friends this week and won't be back. The ambience of this restaurant is cute, eclectic, and colorful which is nice. The service is poor. The waiter we had was not personable in the slightest. He was more concerned with the football game on tv than waiting on his tables. He seemed put out by any request. The chips & salsa were mediocre at best. My dinner was..meh. I got the tacos plate with tenderloin (which was actually ground beef of some sort) and shrimp. On each taco between the two soggy tortillas was a slick of oil. Nothing much seemed fresh. Not sure what the draw is to this restaurant, I was less than impressed. read more

My family and I always come to the Original Blue Adobe Grille for our birthday dinners. Every dish I have ever had is beyond wonderful and tasty. The complementary chips and salsa is very much appreciated, and the (green) salsa has just the right amount of saltiness and heat. We love the calamari steaks appetizer, but also tried the crab cakes on our recent visit which is now another family favorite. Our server took excellent care of our dining needs and was very friendly. We love this place and will continue to come back. Bravo! read more

What a bust. I don't understand all the five-star reviews. My husband and I left so unsatisfied. 1- our meals were $22 each and the amount of protein was laughable. My Tucumcari entree has maybe two ounces of beef, and his Chorizo-Stuffed Chicken had even less chicken. 2- my spaghetti was drowning in butter. I didn't take more than two bites. 3- the waitress completely forgot about us when it came to bringing the bill. 4- she kept using the "we're understaffed" excuse, but we're not asking you to do so much and plus, the place was half-empty, plus, the waitress was running maybe three tables. 5- our appetizer, the Ancho-Rubbed Shrimp Wraps, were not actually wraps. It was a shrimp cocktail, so that was misleading, because my husband doesn't like shrimp cocktail, and it didn't have avocado in it like the menu said it did. Plus, it didn't even taste good and it was pure horseradish, which the menu didn't state it had. 6- everyone here is over the age of 70. Not everything that glitters is gold. read more

Very tasty! I had never been before. My friend and I got order for take out. It was ready in a timely manner, food was still hot when we ate it and it was scrumptious. I think $17.99 is a little expensive for a combo plate but I don't go here often as I don't live close but it was a nice treat. You could find an authentic taco truck that would charge half the amount. The crime brûlée was yummy. The tortillas were delicious and the meat was well prepared and marinated. We did order bean & cheese dip, which was a little pathetic size wise for the price and think it was only beans but it was good. My two friends said their food was scrumptious too. We took 2 friends (born & raised in New Mexico) to the Blue Adobe last night for dinner. They said they haven't had good Mexican/New Mexican food since they moved to AZ 20 years ago. Last night's dinner was OUTSTANDING! Two of us had stacked enchiladas, one had chili relanos, and Jay had a chimichanga. Our AZ friends found their new fave restaurant. We have been here so many times and from day 1 we have loved this place. All of the food here is delicious. All of the servers there are so great and they always have the best recommendations for the food. Some of the food I recommend there is their lobster tamales (trust me, it's weird but it's sooooooooooo bomb), carne adovada (some of the best meat ever), the ancho chile rub ribs (it's fall off the bone deliciousness, comes with a wedge salad that's so good- bacon, avocado, tomatoes, with house ranch-, and green chili cornbread), chorizo stuffed chicken (I only tasted it. But next time I'm getting it). If there's lots of choices you wanna have, there's a Santa cafe plate that lets you try up to three different items and that's always a high recommendation to do. Love the look of the inside too. It's very home like and it kinda a small place but we've never had issues being able to sit right away. I will highly highly say to go here at least once. I was told about this little restaurant by a coworker that has lived here in the Phoenix area all his life. When I drove up I noticed that there is alot of parking bit it's hard to find a spot to watch your car while you eat. So if that's a concern you might want to get there early because it was pretty busy on a Sunday at around 1:00pm. They are short staffed for the amount of people that were there but very friendly and helpful with explaining the menu to us. The chips were nice and thin just the way I love them. And the salsa had a nice roasted taste to it but wasn't that spicy. They did offer to refill the chips and salsa before we even finished them witch I admire in a restaurant. Now I know I came super hungry because I had a great workout before I showed up. But the food was amazing and spectacular. I ordered the flat enchiladas. With Carne adovada tripple layered with the egg on top. Smothered in green chile. This is a must. Its a big meal and full of flavor. Husband had the lobster tamale with the shrimp relleno, he felt it was good. I had the cheese enchiladas which was a solid block of cheese and cheese grease on top of the blue corn tortillas. My SIL did not even eat too much of hers as it was too thick. I mentioned it to the waitress and she said "you did order cheese enchiladas, if you had ordered one with meat it would have had just a sprinkle of cheese". Not a friendly comment at all. The beans were excellent but the rice tasted boxed. I'm sure it was the long grain rice and the seasoning. Also, the chili was not New Mexico style. I dislike downgrading ratings, but I also dislike restaurants that decline in food and service. Four of us for dinner Saturday night. I really talked this place up, because I've really enjoyed prior meals here. Split salad with my wife. Bacon was burnt. Had to ask for straws. Had to ask for silverware. Wife's filet mignon was overcooked. It's a crime to cook filet till it's grey. No refill on chips offered. My 3 choice cafe plate was barely edible. Spoonful of beans tasted like nothing. Rice tasted like it had been sitting around a while. Shredded beef taco had a couple of pieces of gristle in it. Pork tamale, couldn't find the pork. An overcooked mass of masa, drenched in an overly spicy red sauce. The "enchanted" enchilada left me disenchanted. Never asked if we wanted dessert, coffee. What an overall disappointment. Mediocre, food, lackluster service. This used to be one of my favorite places. Bummer! read more

What a fantastic surprise this place was! Atmosphere: The atmosphere is extremely authentic feeling, not fake and mocked-up, but genuine New Mexican comfort. It's super clear that this is a family owned business with heart and not a chain of mass produced wanna be New Mexican cuisine. Saltillo tile floors, colorful chandeliers, heavy wood tables with comfortable seating, spacious, comfortable, not too loud, and open feeling, exactly what you want in this type of restaurant. Service: The service was outstanding. We had three bowls of chips and salsa before the meal even arrived and neither ever went empty. Same with our water glasses. The atmosphere is so open that any server can see your table and is happy to take care of you. Our service was always with a smile and a positive, friendly tone. It was prompt and thoughtful. Could not have asked for more. Food: it was my first time, so I only got to try one entrée (and my buddy got the same thing), the stacked enchiladas, which was the Wednesday special and it was fantastic. It was served with rice and beans. Everything was clearly cooked fresh and to order with flavorful, fresh, quality ingredients. Everything was served at an appropriate temperature and the taste was excellent. The value was also terrific for a large, homemade plate of new Mexican goodness for only $11. Check out my picture of the stacked spicy pork enchiladas, which you can also get with chicken or steak,... and maybe shrimp. Yumm! Overall, this was a great experience and I would absolutely, unequivocally go back to this restaurant if I were in the area again, even though there are many other well rated restaurants around. It seems rare to find a great New Mexican restaurant in most locations in AZ (Mexican restaurants on every corner, but New Mexico cuisine is much harder to find) and this restaurant did a fantastic job filling that gap. Everything is good. We come for the margaritas and the green chili old family cheese crisp. The skinny cady and the frozen prickly pear are our choices. The sopes were OK, but we think it might have been a one off given how consistently good everything else is. The Carne Adovada is excellent the next morning as leftovers with a sunny side egg up and more tortillas. Highly recommend. This is one of our favorite places to go for date night. The staff is excellent and the bartender is amazing. Some additional favorites of ours is the Green Chile Corn Chowder, Portobello Mushroom Enchilada, Smoked Pork Tamale, and the meatloaf. I know everyone gets all excited about the "chili" but that is something that has always escaped me. With the above being said, I had the stacked enchilada with carne adovada and green chili. I read so many great reviews about Blue Adobe l had to try it as small businesses need our help more than ever. Staff is super nice, service excellent! I ordered the blue seafood enchilada, a scrumptious enchilada stuffed with shrimp, lobster, halibut and salmon. One word: delish! The sauce is rich and bold not oily and seafood cooked just right. The side rice tastes buttery and beans oh my! Ron had a cheese enchilada and a chicken enchilada and a side salad of mixed greens with goat cheese. He loved all of it but thought the cheese enchilada was better than the chicken one. Their complimentary salsa is chunky, smokey and their homemade tortillas are perfect.
