I'll preface by saying this place is a little divey. It's small, there isn't any seating and there were a lot of flys. BUT - the chile is excellent. I ordered a Mexican burger and a order of chile cheese fries. The Mexican burger is basically a burrito with a hamburger patty. MAKE SURE TO GET IT SMOTHERED! The chile is tasty and definitely has a bite to it but it's not overwhelming. There isn't space to sit you every order is to go. Unfortunately they don't have proper to go containers, it's a plate stapled on top of a plate so hold on to your bag to make sure the contents of the plate don't slide around. You should make up your own opinion on this place. I have employees at work who will drive from Santa Fe and Hampden to this location on their lunch hour. Do not try any other location - they are knockoffs! The original owner, who a lot of people knew as "grandma" recently passed away at 100 years of age. She was a generous woman and loved her place. That is what you will find here with her family running the biz. The food is good when you are in the right mood. Who cares what kind of bowel movements come with this meal if it is tasty as hell? If you have never at least tried our little sister down south (Albuquerque) for Chile Verde for comparison, make up your own mind but quit saying it's the best because it's mediocre in my opinion. We often joke how long it would last down there- oh and we are Native Coloradans to before it was a state and Denver was around and remember Abuelita's place in the Valley and how it smelled like Red Chile the true "Colarojo colores que no? I will never get over that sneer when asking about the red Chile, (and no it's not " the enchilada sauce either"), about just wanting to know if they took pride and knew the dmn difference between two worlds of Chile. We are sick of the late nights cause we live in this "hood" and have heard arguments, gunshots and the whole human panoply for the last whatever years Denver has gone down the crapper. Chubbys... what can I say? If I'm in the area or just passing by, I stop. My usual order stretching back well over thirty years is potato and egg deluxe burrito smothered half and half... green and red. That's it. I'm satisfied though sometimes I pay for it the next morning if the green is ultra hot. Best time to go, mid afternoon. In the mornings and weekends, they get slammed. At night, busy as well... all year 'round. It's far from the best Mexican food in town. .. there are tons of other places much better. But... Ordered chili cheese fries, carne asada tacos and the bean & cheese burrito with the famous green chili... It was decent. Nothing to brag about but definitely okay. Chili was very spicy and they use the good cheese;) It's a hole-in-the-wall location that boasts a few tables outside and just an ordering station inside. Can't really sit & dine and best for pick-up. Always busy, and wide variety of customers. Would definitely eat here again. read more

A late night dive taco joint of all late night dive taco joints. Average cheese and slightly less than greasy quesadillas to absorb all those tequila shots you took earlier during the night. But while it's not the tastiest, mouth-watering drunk food you come to hope for, I do appreciate that it's there and that it 1) didn't get me sick and 2) I didn't get robbed on the street coming in or going out. That's pretty much my bare-bones criteria for late night drunk food stops. This might not top my list for Denver, but I'll likely be coming back when I fail to realize where I am and somehow stumble in. read more

Oh man. I just ate their bacon, egg and potato burrito special and it was amazing. I find some of the best food in this world comes from little hole in the wall places and this is one of them. So I've always heard people talk about this place so I decided to try it today. It was pretty good. I just love chili rellenos and ordered them at every time I can and I must say not to bad :) Now it's no SAMs #3 rellenos but good never the less. I also ordered a beef taco and it was yummy. The green chili at this place is really good and it has the kind of heat that stays on your lips for a while and I like that. I would eat here again for sure. It is a real busy place but that get it out fast and they do have a little place to sit outside :) read more

I've been eating here for 6 years and the place is always awesome. Best breakfast burritos for me in Denver. The place is a small rather beat up counter that you order your food at with just a counter and some stools to eat at but I don't see people eating there. It's about 97% take out. Over the last year or two the prices have been ratcheting up but the food is still good. read more

This place was on my list of "Want to have tried it" Denver institutions. I can now check it off as a Done. The taco was ok - I'm not a big Mexican cuisine fan. DH had a Mexican hamburger and was satiated. We probably won't go back since we don't live nearby but I got the feeling that it's a well loved place. It was packed at lunch. This is not in any way authentic Mexican food. Even though I don't come often, when I do, I order smothered fries. They are yummy! Coming in on a Friday night can seem overwhelming because their small waiting area is always overloaded. Don't let that or the people you see intimidate you though; they are friendly people. Everybody pretty much keeps to themselves and mind their own business. Also, the waiting time is not too bad, they are at a fast pace. The people in the ordering area, who I'm guessing are the owners, are very nice and attentive. There was also a police officer there, I'm not sure if he's part of the family but he's friendly to the customers as well. Every time my fiancé and I visit this establishment now, the service seems to get worse whenever they get busy. They still haven't fixed the way the orders come out. It doesn't matter if you were order #20 because they will call every number AROUND your number. I don't understand how their system is so broken. It seems like an easy fix--put out the orders as you receive them! So many customers get angry waiting for their food. Some end up waiting 30+ minutes. I had previously given this place 4/5 stars. I've dropped it down to 2 stars. I would give them a 1 but the extra star is because the food is still delicious. PLEASE, Chubby's, fix the way you put out orders and put them out IN THE ORDER THEY WERE RECEIVED! That will lessen your angry customers. There are many places that get crazy busy and they are able to have a proper system and get people out as soon as possible. The most a customer is supposed to wait is 15 minutes! read more

I love The Original Chubby's! I've been going to this location for over 22 years. My fav is a bean and chicharone burrito with the green on the inside. Bean and egg is A+ for me, too. We almost always get smothered fries as well. We lived in AZ for 10 years and missed Chubby's the whole time. When we'd come back to CO on vacation, our first stop would often be at Chubby's to pick up about 20 burritos to have during our time here. The restaurant is small and it's crowded because it's such a good place to get good Mexican food. We were there on NYE once after midnight and it was crowded then, too. I have almost gotten in fights there, I have been involved in the generations-old family fueds of strangers there, and I have stood there, shoulder to shoulder with a wide range of human specimens while we all waited for our chile-smothered orders. What can you say about Chubby's? If you crave greasy, processed and atomically spicy Mexican fast food, Chubby's is your place to indulge. If you don't like green chile, fake cheddar cheese or really spicy food, you would do best to turn the other way. The food ranges from 'hot' to 'clears out your sinuses like the CS gas chamber in Army training' as far as spiciness goes. It's heavy, it's horrible for you, and it's delicious whether or not you need some grease to sop up the two-too-many shots you had an hour ago. The place is always packed with a huge line of people waiting on their orders - a testament to its popularity. So I have one major piece of advice for those seeking to try out Chubby's; order over the phone and pick up! Then, if you're not ready to deal with a wide variety of people from the area, some of whom definitely want to kick your ass or at least tag your car with spray paint, take your food to your nearest safehouse and hide out until the heat (on your tongue) subsides. read more

I've been coming here for 20+ years. The quality/spiciness of the green chill had gone way down, many of my family members agree. I lived here n CA for a while and would always bring home at least a quart of chubbies. Not sure what happened!! It was a staple for late night food and they are closed. At late night. 3 of us had takeout smothered chicken burritos and to our surprise they did not use real cheese. They used melted Valveta processed cheese. Also the "chicken" was ground into little dry kernels smaller than popcorn that was pretty near tasteless. The owners should be horrified that the quality of their food lost us as customers. They either lost their taste buds or they are not aware their help is clueless as to making the good mexican food they had been known for. It is a shame & a travesty. Not impressed with the new Chubby's set up. I went in last Sunday and there was a big line as usual but not for people waiting on food. We were waiting to order. The food was not the same. The heat that Chubby's is known for wasn't there. It looks nice inside and it's not cramped anymore. People that had ordered twenty mins after us were getting their food. Forty five mins later, I go up to the counter to see what's taking so long.
