I like The Original Mels Diner in Roseville. It is easy to get to, they have plenty of parking in their parking lot and the service is decent. Although the retro decor great, I feel like this location doesn't have as much as other locations such as the one downtown. The food is good, just like other Mels in the area. You can't go wrong with breakfast, lunch or dinner! When I went many families were there enjoying their meal and some treats such as milkshakes. When I came to Roseville, I was looking for an old-school diner, and I found one that really knocked it out of the park! Look no further than The original Mels diner. There's a medium size parking lot. When walking in , it's like you get transported back into the 50s. Oldies are playing on the jukebox , lots of neon. It has welcoming customer service and delicious smells of pancakes or french fries will be wafting in the air. I came here 2x in one week. Had their grilled chicken Cobb salad both times. Homemade ranch dressing was a delight. Their corn bread muffins were hot and tasty. I'm in love with their chocolate malt. Love their color changing straws. I only wish their Elvis songs would work on their jukeboxes on their tables. The number two button would not work on my table jukebox and so I could not play any Elvis songs. Came in Wednesday evening for dinner and ordered my usual, Chicken Fried Steak. I have never had a bad one. It's always slightly crispy, tender meat and delicious country gravy. I don't know if they changed food suppliers or what, but this was not good. The outer edges were fine, the closer to the center of the steak you got, the more you couldn't eat it. It was full of gristle, and I was worried I would crack a tooth on it. When the server came and asked about our meal, I told her about the issue and she just said "Oh No, nobody has ever said that before" She came back a few minutes later with the bill and asked if I wanted a box to take it home. My reply was "If its inedible here, why would I take it home!" On the plus side, the mashed potatoes with the country gravy were delicious! I've been routinely coming to this location on Douglas in Roseville. I love the staff! Incredible service and very personable. Food is fine but the wait staff is the only reason that I keep coming back. It's now been 12 years. My biggest complaint i have is this new manager. In all my years coming into this establishment I've never seen wait staff berated in the restaurant in front of customers. I felt as though I did something wrong having witnessed this. I come here frequently and have seen this horrible behavior more than twice at this point. You just don't see this behavior in restaurants. The lack of professionalism is embarrassing. read more

We decided to go to Mel's as we hadn't been in a few years. It was pretty quiet with not many customers at the time so that was nice, we were seated quickly and our waitress was very attentive and friendly. I do have to say that the quality of the food just wasn't worth the price, the chicken fried steak was good but the potatoes were undercooked. That being said the atmosphere itself is fun, it has an old retro vibe and it's a nice place to sit and visit with whoever you are dining with, I'm not sure I'd go in for food again but I would probably go in and enjoy a cup of coffee with a friend. read more

Date night with the hubby & extremely disappointed. Their patty melt was shameful, burger was way smaller than their "bread", tomatoes were big and overwhelming, hardly any onions. It was hardly a "patty melt" imo. Their Philly cheese was also very flavorless, the meat literally had no seasoning. My wife and I have been regulars at Mels on Douglas for close to two decades. We grab weekend breakfast or lunch a couple times every month. Food is good and service is always top notch - we have 2 favorite waitresses who we ask for by name. They even know our orders without us opening our mouths! Management, however, seems to be hit and miss. One gentleman is friendly and is pleasant. Another male seemed less customer service minded, but we haven't seen him recently. But there is a new woman who has been there the last couple of visits who is atrocious. Today was the second time that we have witnessed her have a meltdown, berating her employees in front of a restaurant full of customers. They seemed a little understaffed today, staff seemed to be working extra hard. We don't know what set this new manager off, but her behavior was shameful and embarrassing for everybody within earshot. Nobody, especially a store manager, should treat an employee like that. We were so put off that we paid for our meals and left before we even finished eating. Our poor server. As much as we love Mel's, think it might be time to try something else. read more

I used to live by t and eat at this restaurant before I move to Auburn about seven years ago. in the past year, I've noticed the quality of food has gone down, and the amount of the serving size has also been reduced down while prices have skyrocketed. I had a chef salad today for lunch. My waitress was April who I've known for years. Mt chef salas was about half a size of what it used to be in the blue cheese dressing was horrible. I explained this to April several times, but got no help . Mel's used to and they used to make their own blue cheese dressing and it used to be really good, which is one of the reasons I ate there but what I ate today instead tasted like cheap canned or store-bought blue cheese dressing. it was horrible. And even though I complained to the April several times that i tasted terrible tasted horrible she did not let me substitute for anything else or offer to reduce price so I just ate half a salad barely touched the blue cheese dressing paid a whopping $23 for the blue cheese or for the salad and on the way home, my stomach was so upset from the crappy blue cheese dressing that I had to pull into Walmart on my way home and buy a jar of Tums so I can make it home to Auburn. I left a message with the assistant manager and never got a call back. I will never eat at thisMel's location again again as the quality of the food has consistently gone down as prices went up. I visit here quite a bit because my nieces love this restaurant. I like the 50s kind of theme with the jukeboxes at every table and the staff seem to like to work there. It has a couple of TVs set to sports so that's kind of nice as well. I like some of the food more than others, for instance I enjoy their breakfast item i was not a fan of the bbq chicken melburger and garlic fries but i liked the Philly cheesesteak with curly fries and their breakfast foods. Also the portions are pretty huge so bring your appetite. They were nice enough to give my niece a root beer float for her bday and they have really good desserts (especially their milkshakes and their lemon meringue pie looks amazing). Overall it's a pretty solid restaurant that has been in the community for many years as it is frequented by locals. It's definitely worth a visit if you're considering it. read more

Ordered a 2x2 breakfast and it was more like a 1x2. Small portion of scrambled eggs. And my waffle was so cold the butter wouldn't melt. And apparently Mel's doesn't serve syrup in a bottle anymore. They give you a small amount in a dinky plastic container. I tried explaining to my waitress that I wasn't upset with her but then she got smart with me and said "next time I'll make it myself" basically was being sarcastic and snarky. Total disappointment! I havent been to mels in ages and im so glad i stopped by this location. Wife and i both got a sanfrancisco burger. It was perfect. Hige shout out to haley for being super polite and friendly. Made the entire experience better. Very short wait time for food. So this was the first time I've ever been to Mel's and I was pleasantly surprised that I was teleported to a late 60's diner. The decor was nice, the vibes were amazing as everyone was eating still around 11ish. Our server was wonderful and gave us plenty of time to look at the menu. I ordered a BLTA with garlic fries, and they were pretty good and had lots of garlicyy flavor lol. However my friends at the table would not say the same about their food. My friend ordered a ribeye special that comes with a 2 sides, and a cornbread. Everything was pretty good about it except the ribeye. The ribeye that was ordered was supposed to be a medium rare. Except when they got it the ribeye was basically moving. It was cooked medium rare in the middle, but then on all the sides, especially where the fat was it was undercooked to the max. We told the waitress and she was really swag and nice about it and told us she'll get it fixed. period! Then we got the food back and guess what, it was the same steak (which idrc about) but it was both well done and raw at the same time. it was crazy. Let me start by saying we were surprised at how good the food was.... We were seated quickly and the waitress greeted us right away. My wife and I both ordered open face hot turkey sandwiches, our little one got a corn dog, one of our teens got a club sandwich, one got clam chowder, and one ordered chicken tenders. The veggies served with the hot turkey were fresh and not over cooked. That was such a pleasant surprise. The only item that wasn't reportedly good was the chowder. The place feels like a 50's diner right out of American Graffiti! It was pretty clean and everyone seemed to be enjoying the wide array of juke box tunes being played by patrons. She's very nice and always makes sure the kid in our party gets his food as soon as it's done to keep him happy (she must be a mom because sometimes having a toddler sitting in a restaurant can be challenging. Was meeting a friend for breakfast. I decided to go for the waffle. Best decision I made of the day! I didn't think I could eat the entire waffle, yet I did. It was so delicious! The waitress was very kind and quick. Very few people in the diner when we arrived, however, many more were arriving when we were leaving. The only detriment was that someone had a "Service Animal" which was clearly not with the choke collar and they had a very small tight little vest on the dog that stated "Service Animal", when it was obviously not. Vest not appropriate for size of animal. Due to the behavior of the animal and the owner, it was obviously their pet Rottweiler. And they were demanding in where they sat, bc of the pet dog. So my morning consisted of not being able to sleep last night so I ended up going here for breakfast! BEST DECISION EVER. I walked in and of course it's your early 80s(?) diner but it felt welcoming! The lovely young miss who sat me was quick and efficient asking what I wanted to drink. I got a black coffee obviously! It was regular restaurant coffee, so average. Another kind miss came and asked if I was ready to order and I had forgotten what my order was, but she knew just by me saying "the one with everything." It was the Wolfman Jack btw. She went to place my order, and I had gotten asked if I needed a coffee refill almost immediately after finishing my first cup! The one who served my food was a gentleman who had asked me if it was my day off earlier. He accidentally placed my plate too hard down on my table and knocked the syrup into my eggs, and I told him it was okie, but he insisted on bringing me a new plate! VERY KIND! Afterward he brought a new plate and once again filled up my coffee! Overall the staff was great and efficient! The place of course was extremely busy but vibes were there! 9/10 would recommend!! We frequently would go to the original Mel's closer to home, and the food at that location has always been mediocre. Sometimes it just works for a late dinner/breakfast, we're not much else is open. We were hanging out in the Roseville area, and decided to give the original Mel's a try, and definitely it was worth the effort. The food is A step up from the other location, but definitely not worth more than three stars on any given day. Service was quick, but the server definitely did not want to be bothered with being at work. She pretty much ignored most of the tables, outside of taking orders, and then bringing the food to the tables. I was hoping for a refill of my drink, but she was never noticeably around, until it was time for her to drop off the check. The burger was a little overdone, and because of the neglect of the table, I wasn't able to send it back. It was a tasty burger it just was overdone which made it unappealing to me. The onion rings definitely were tasty, but not worth the up charge. My dining date ordered the same burger along with curly fries. The curly fries were pretty killer, lightly seasoned, and not greasy whatsoever. A couple that was sitting adjacent to us ordered breakfast items that smelled divine, and looked pretty tasty from a far. Maybe Mel's makes a better breakfast than anything else... I'm not sure that I'll be going back to figure it out though. This specific location does an outstanding job of sanitizing each area after use, and they still have plastic partitions between booths. The plastic partitions aren't cleaned after each guest, but the seats and tables are. It's really a mixed blessing knowing that the area has been sanitized, but smelling that well one is eating their food makes it hard to get through the meal. At the end of the day, if this is what diner food was like in the 50s, I'm so glad that we aren't there any longer. read more
