The burritos are way too big and messy and take away from the amazing flavor of the meats plus you can only choose one type of meat and one sauce. The tacos however are the BEST tacos I've ever had! There are sooo many good quality meats and sauces to choose from. If you get the tacos you can choose different combinations of meats and sauces so it's perfect! I definitely will be going back! Very impressed with this little hole in the wall. Oooo and 1 more thing, Chipotle has NOTHING on Sidedoor. Just like a previous customer said it's like comparing Morton's meat to Burger King meat. Everything is so good. The homemade chips with queso is a great start. After that, I've tried the soft tacos (duck, chorizo, pulled pork, barbacoa, and veggie). All really good and you load them up with whatever you want from their listing of "add-ons" on the chalk board above the counter area. The burritos and really good and my wife thought the burrito bowl was one of the best she has had. Ten salsas to choose from and they are all really tasty with #1 being the least hot and #10 being the most. Enough seating so that is not a problem. They do not have a fountain drink option yet have alcohol and other sugared beverages you can order. It forces me to drink water so that's probably better anyway. One suggestion--they seem to make soup daily (Pozole and Tortilla have been mentioned),but they have no way of notifying customers or even advertising it (i.e. its not on the chalkboard or the menu). I like this place and my family used to come here a few times a month. The food is tasty (try the duck!) and decently priced. That said, we used to come here more, but stopped coming as often for a few reasons... 1) when the price of avocados went up, they made a drastic increase in what they charged for guac. And they put this stupid sign up to explain it. I get that the cost of avocados did go up - but really, does that mean you have to literately double what you charge for a tiny scoop of guac? [NOTE: this restaurant is owned by the same person who owns Wisma, which has also had massive price increases recently. Also note that no other restaurant I've seen has increased their guac price despite the increase in the cost of avocados]. While the other menu items didn't change price, it was just so ridiculous that it kind of tarnished my view of this place. That, and I found a dead ant in the bag of chips I bought one time (and when I brought this to their attention, they were not exactly apologetic). Is the food good? Yes, yes it is. Is it local? Yes, yes it is. I just wish they weren't so stingy and treated their customers better. We'd be back to coming here more often if that was the case. read more

Cool concept but very bland food. I ordered a chicken burrito, it had no taste to speak of, no spice just nothing to write home about. Seriously, this place isn't even as good as Qdoba in vernon hills. Next time I stay home and make my own burrito. Also, the teen staff were not at all trained well, they got the simple drink order all wrong. Sorry but I will not be a returning customer and the sad note is, I live here in Lake Bluff and was looking for some really good Mexican food! read more

Updated my review based on immediate feedback from the owner. We will return. We have been going here and Inovasi and Wisma when it was still open... their service has declined drastically. Today I drive in from the city and arrive to a line out the door... I am picking up lunch for my mom who cannot eat corn nor flour. During my wait in line, I hear and see the woman behind the counter saying she's going downstairs to get more lettuce. The one gentleman continues to take orders, while covering the register. 30+ minutes it's finally my turn to place our order for two bowls, with lettuce instead of rice and beans... he simply states they don't have lettuce and haven't for awhile... WHAT? I JUST heard the conversation you had with your co-worker and at this point can wait a few more minutes for her to bring up more lettuce (she told him she would be back in a few minutes)... I take a see breath and simply say I'll go elsewhere. Unreal. I walk to Bluffinton's get my mom's salad and head back to her house, after an HOUR ordeal, we have our lunch. Pass on coming here if the line is out the door, maybe mark on the menu if you're out of something... bc according to the gentleman they've been out of it for a long time, but according to the conversation they had in front of me, his co-worker was going to be a few minutes to get more? read more

I rarely write reviews but I just ate takeout from Sidedoor and as someone who frequents Inovasi I was really looking forward to trying this adjacent Mexican fare. First of all the place is very cute and rustic and has a really interesting menu which is where the one star came in. I ordered three different tacos a duck, fish, and pork. As I watched the woman making them if she put any less meat or fish on them she would of needed and eyed dropper. She put a little on the spoon put it on the taco and then took some off the taco as if it was gold and put it back in the container it was ridiculous how skimpy these tacos were. Also who charges extra for onion and peppers on a taco ? It is not like these are dollar tacos. Here is the best part instead of wrapping them individually as she should of especially since they were all different she wrapped them all together and when I got to my desk and opened it looked like a bunch of slop. My husband got the special burrito, I got tacos. It was our first time there, nice to be able to try a variety of salsas and meats. They were playing some very cool vinyl records over the stereo. Okay, that's the good. The bad... the décor is aggressively dive-y; it'd be right at home in Logan Square. Didn't seem to fit in Lake Bluff. Didn't make me want to stay there a second longer than necessary. My tacos were ice cold and bland. My husband said he liked his burrito, which was chorizo with #7 salsa. I tried a bite and it was so-so. I tried salsas 3, 4 and 6. All were very bland. We also got chips (extra cost), guac (extra cost) and drinks. The bill with tip came to $32, and it feels like I have a brick in my stomach. On the website, they show the tacos in multiple soft corn shells, served on nice plates, looking spiffy. At the restaurant, they wrap everything in foil and hand it to you, even when you tell them it's "for here." Plastic silverware and cafeteria trays. No extra salsas on the table. My husband said he'd go back for the cool tunes. I won't be back. Cold food was a deal-killer. read more
