This was a great find out in the desert. There really isn't much around as far as a BBQ/ steak kind of place nearby. The outside of the building is really not indicative of what is inside. It is clean and neatly decorated with old photos and pheasants, old cow skulls (I think) and a neat stencil illustrating all of the different cuts of beef on a cow on the walls. My kids got a kick out of this. We had some beer (good selection) and iced tea and enjoyed a pulled pork sandwich with amazing fries, the prospector chicken sandwich, west of Loredo burger and buffalo chicken sandwich. All of the food was fresh and tasty. The Prospector chicken sandwich has a lot of jalapeño on it so just be aware of that. No biggie for me. I just took some of it out as my tummy was a little sensitive and I thought it might be too much for me today. Side salads we switched for some of our fries were fresh! I would definitely like to try a salad here. I also saw a baked potato and ribs come out to another table and they looked good! Service was wonderful. So friendly and attentive. I forgot to take photos of all of the food, but I did catch a couple of the meals before we ate them. I really would love to see this business succeed and thank you for giving us more wonderful options nearby! Oh and P.S. the restaurant is adjoining to a tavern you can go back and forth between. We walked through the Tavern and it's a fun bar atmosphere with a pool table and shuffle board along with a full bar and some high tops and tables. I honestly was surprised by how satisfying the food was this last visit. I came to this restaurant when it recently had open up and the food was awful. But i decided to give it another shot and I'm glad i did. I ordered the sirloin and my husband ordered the half rack of ribs. My husband loved his plate so much he devoured it. I actually finished up my entire plate as well. Im not giving a 5 star rating unfortunately because i must say in the first 15 mins i had wanted to leave. We came in for dinner time and we were waiting to be seated. The waitress looked very busy and they told us to sit anywhere. So we did and we had been waiting for a while before anyone came to get our drinks orders or give us menus. A hidden gem in the high desert! All the food and drinks that I have tried here so far are amazing. The rib eye is 14 ounces and full of flavor. The filet mignon was super tender. Both were cooked to perfection. For sides, we enjoyed the chili. It was full of meat and flavor with no beans. We also enjoyed the garlic fries. Sooo good!! They are the skinny fries and not the thick potato fries. The potato soup was very tasty as well. We had the queso bean dip for an appetizer. That was also super delicious with the chili. The drinks are phenomenal and cheap. We enjoyed the old fashioned drinks (north of the border and the Serrano) were so good. The north of the border was sweet and strong, but not overly sweet. The Serrano had a tasty Smokey flavor. the lavender gin drink (step daughter). The Bloody Mary was tasty. It had salt on one side of the rim and tajin on the other. The hangover cure is a beast! It is a Bloody Mary with lots of food appetizers! You can definitely share with someone. You cannot go wrong with any drinks here. Went here for the first time saw the menu. It's pretty small for a steakhouse menu but simple so that's really good. It looks like they have deals going on if you go during the weekday at lunch, you get discounts. It's a little pricey, but pretty much every steakhouse you go to cost a little more. The portions are pretty good. The food wasn't too bad. We ordered a couple sandwiches and a giant pretzel my only with the chili burger was the chili was a little bit salty, but that's just a personal reference. The cheese for the pretzel had a weird texture. Love the pretzel Didn't care much for the cheese. Everything else was pretty good. There really is no better food in the high desert but this is merely a suggestion while the restaurant side is remodeled- make the tavern family friendly with designated hours and appropriate music. The fine folks of phelan will be ok if they need to get a day time drink somewhere else. And add a steak to your limited menu, you're a steak house. read more

Well it's been a year and after hearing they have improved the food and experience we decided to try again. I have to say they have made real change. We came for dinner on a Friday night. Hubs got the Wild West show salad and added steak (rare) I got the 8 oz flat iron steak with a side salad and fries. The daughter in law cocktail and for apps, the deep fried mushrooms. We were both impressed with the quality and taste of each dish. Our steaks were perfectly cooked. The mushrooms were beer battered and fried which were delightful. This place is meh. Not good, not bad, just meh. The menu makes no sense and genuinely turns you off certain items. For example, the aqueduct ahí tuna poke or sheep creek shrimp...sounds ... gross. I get the desire to make the menu sound local but... neither of those bodies of water have those animals in them. Personally, knowing this, just made me question the freshness of the menu items. When asked about the menu names or items and how they're served, our waitress knew nothing. My kid asked if the cheeseburger had American or cheddar cheese because American cheese is highly processed and eating highly processed foods is very painful for her due to a health condition. The waitress told us cheddar but when the burger came, it was American. My daughter, not wanting to bother anyone, scraped as much off as she could and ate her burger anyways. When I pointed it out to the waitress she said, "they're both yellow, I dont know the difference." Additionally, I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich with avocado thing, it was supposed to come with Swiss cheese and it came with what looked like cheddar jack. Again, I scraped it off. The fries were burnt and the garlic parm fries were... gross. Very, very garlicky and over cooked. I'm pretty sure everything comes frozen before it's cooked... at least that's how it tasted. Between the items ordered the best item was the meat on meat between carbs. It had bbq and a beef patty. Both of which had great flavor. Well, we really wanted to like this place to encourage local business support. But the only positive thing about it was the friendly service. The prime ribs we ordered were overdone. I couldn't finish it. The horseradish wasn't really horseradish...more like mayonnaise. The garlic wings were fried way too long and super crispy, taking away from the garlic flavor. The mashed potatoes were quite dry and bland. Aesthetically, it could use a more tasteful decor. I can appreciate the western country theme but it's a bit dated and not very thoughtful...they didn't give it a lot of thought. So, that could use a facelift. This place was AMAZING! Everything we got was delicious. I just wish it wasn't a several hours drive to get to. We happened to be in the area checking out the local wild life refuge and needed something to eat. The outside is boring, and you would hardly notice it in the tiny little strip mall. Also don't listen to Google Maps they have you drive through several nearby properties to get to it, it has a driveway off the main road. The inside is cute western ish steakhouse without being over done. The service was fast and great. Our server appeared to be getting directions from a manager type like it was her first day, if I didn't see that interaction i would of assumed she had been working there some time. This is a fantastic place. From the outside it looks like a rundown shithole, however step inside and it's a warm and inviting atmosphere with lots of Americana displayed on the walls. The staff were friendly and prompt and our service was excellent. Tending to our needs without being bothersome. The New York strip steak was tender and braised. No sauce or seasoning needed. Soft and juicy. The clam chowder is excellent and the Mac n cheese is extra cheesy and popping with flavor. The "railroad spikes" (fried pickles) tasted home grown and pickled fresh. Full of flavor and just the right amount of breading. If you're ever in the middle of nowhere (Phelan) and need soms great old fashioned home cooking, don't be afraid to stop in. We were on our way to Vegas this past week and yesterday we stopped in for a bite. We'd heard about this place from some friends. Stacey, our server, was amazing. She was the cute brunette there with great smile and was very helpful. She recommended the rib-eye, so I ordered that, and the baked potato was perfect. Love having a restaurant that is in our neighborhood that gives you good food at a reasonable price. I especially enjoy the burgers, their names are fun & they are enormous. We didn't have any idea of what to expect when we arrived. All kinds of reviews locally. We ordered the buffalo cauliflower bites appetizer. Loved the zing. Then we split the NY Steak topped with mushrooms with a loaded baked potato and mac 'n cheese as our sides. The steak wa.s seasoned wonderfully, tender and cooked spot on. I didn't even reach for th.e A1 sauce I asked for. Finished the meal with the chocolate molten. It wasn't dense like many molten desserts - moist and light. Decided to try this place out with my wife as it has been open for about a year now, we are phelan locals so we were excited for this new place. If you are used to a higher end experience when you hear the words "steak house " this is definitely not it, it is more of a diner with steaks on the menu. I ordered the New York strip and it came a little burnt on the outside (not charred , burnt) We also ordered "Queso dip" it looked and tasted like cheese from a can as well as chili from a can , the tortilla chips were also store bought Most of the pictures you see on Yelp are from the bar next door which is completely separate from the diner, it should be called a bar and grill rather then steak house. The ambience was not all there either it is very outdated and looks like they tried to freshen it up but didn't do the best job. We ordered their version of fried Mac & cheese, chicken fried steak dinner, two dinner salads (one turkey and one steak) and the kids chicken strip meal. Well, the kids chicken was served raw in the middle. Not just pink but cold to the touch raw, dime size diameter throughout both strips. Only saw it because I always cut the larger tenders into smaller pieces for the little one. So server was nice and sent it back right away. They brought the same plate back with now cold fries and the same pieces of chicken that we had cut open that were just refried. So ya, after the raw chicken was all over the plate and fries it was reserved again to the toddler on the same plate with the same now cold fries. But still didn't say anything or complain. Waitress said when she brought it back that she would tell manager who would come by. Rest of the food was mediocre. chicken fried steak was super thin and couldn't even cut it due to being dry. Salads were bland with no flavor. Steak on my salad was cooked pretty well. End of meal, still no manager. So when waitress brings bill, I ask if manager was going to come out or if they would discount or remove the kids meal since she only ate a half piece of one tender and none of the fries cause they were cold. She went to speak with him again. Manager, who would not give his name, showed up immediately with an attitude and said I understand her chicken was pink. I said no it was raw not pink, and he cut us off saying "well she ate it and is now full so I'm not worried about it" and walked away. Wow! while most places would comp the kids meal , give 10% off or something , I would at least expect the manager to give a sincere apology and want feedback so they can improve as a new business. In no way did we walk in looking for free food, but to Instead have the manager walk up already with an attitude and not caring is just wrong. She ate literally a half piece of a chicken tender and no fries as they were cold. But in the end we will be taking our $86 tab somewhere else next time. I haven't even gotten our food yet and I can tell you that we won't be back. $100.93 on a called in order. Ordered the misfit steak ends with double rice pilaf and the vegetable side. When we got there they told us they don't serve rice pilaf with lunch menu. So they gave two dinner salads as substitute. If I'd know I would have ordered a sandwich or burger. My steak was overcooked as I ordered medium rare. These were well done. My vegetable side was carrots and they were soaked in oil or grease and were soggy. They were disgusting. I also ordered the mushrooms, peppers and onions. They were diced so small and were cold and portion size was about 1/4 cup. My son ordered the Pork-Burger medium and added Kraut and onion rings with a side of garlic fries.I didn't get any pics of his because he ran off with his food to his room BUT minutes later he came right back out with it and that just doesn't happen. The burger was rare and not even close to Medium and the garlic fries were soaked in oil, cold and soggy. My daughter ordered the 8oz sirloin with fruit as the side and Ranch beans. Her steak was good. The ranch beans looked old and are BBQ beans, not Ranch beans. I mean I get the whole naming them Ranch beans because of the restaurant name but I really assumed they were serving Ranch beans. My Bad?? We also ordered hot wings and a pretzel appetizers. The hot wings were more of a Buffalo sauce soup with really big wings and legs floating in it. The pretzel was the ONLY good thing we ordered. It comes with beer cheese for dipping. I opened the cheese and it looked cold and gross. When I scooped it out to warm it up I found it was already warm. Kind of gross to think that the cold, lumpy looking cheese was how it's served. All in all I'd avoid the place. I read some good reviews before going but our experience was 100% bad. Costs of everything is going up and spending $100 on trash is just crazy. And if by some chance you really didn't know then you should probably be a little more involved in what is coming out of your restaurant BEFORE you contact customers claiming you want to make things right. This just shows your vindictive attitude and proves how little you really care about ripping Phelan customers off. I ordered via telephone and the young lady taking the order was nice but she didn't tell us certain items were not available. Seriously. How else would I have ordered it and how can you blame the customer? I didn't know then but as you can see from the pictures I would have been very disappointed with anything that came from your kitchen. Your attempt to "make things right" just crashed and burned. I have eaten at the Ranch Steakhouse when it first opened not too long ago as well as a few times more. The first time was for breakfast. It was good but average. We got Chicken and Waffles. The waffle was good but the chicken was just chicken tenders and they didn't have much flavor. We also got the chicken fried steak. That was very good. The next trip in was for dinner. I ordered the ribeye and my husband ordered the sirloin. The ribeye was not what I expected. It was quite thin but the fact that it was so perfectly cooked made me not care. My husband enjoyed his sirloin steak. The loaded baked potato was very good well. We went back this past week and we ordered the ribeye again for a takeout order. Another perfectly cooked steak. However, it was so fatty that it was almost inedible. My son's steak and my husband's, all ribeyes, were the same. It was probably just a quality control issue. I would go back and try again. Despite the reviews, we decided to give this place a try. We walked in, and I can tell you the faces of the servers were not welcoming. I'll chalk that up to them being a little busy. Waited a long time to get menu's. When I went up to the counter to get some, the server was a little snappy and said " I'll be right there". Strike one for the attitude. Ordered some drinks appetizers and our food. Wings came out about 25 minutes later. Their wings were good, minus the cold wing in the bunch, and my Pepsi tasted like diet or flat soda. Strike two. About 45 minutes later, our food finally arrives...Salmon was dry/over cooked, rice was warm, veggies were cold. I asked for chicken soup, I think I got clam chowder it tasted a little fishy. Strike three. The cheeseburger was way over cooked, the bacon was burnt to crispy bits, and the onion rings were a little soggy.. The nachos were awful. The cheese wasn't melted, the ground beef was so burnt, it was like jerky bits. Even the lady that sat next to us complained to the owner that the nachos were inedible. So the hubs and I were able to get lunch at the new Ranch Steakhouse in town. Formerly Arturo's. Same chefs that worked there previously are still there and they are wonderful! I had the Sundowner burger with cheese and fries and hubby had the Reuben with a side of slaw. My burger was delicious (definitely Angus), the fries were good (except a bit more salty than I prefer) and my iced tea tasted freshly made. Hubby truly enjoyed his Reuben and slaw. Our server Courtney, was the best. He always had a smile, was knowledgable about menu items. It became VERY busy, but he was attentive to EVERY person he served. Since it is kind of a "soft" opening, their menus are not complete yet. All in all, this place was extremely clean with an open, friendly atmosphere.
