I used to love going to Red Wagon, and I agree that the food there is pretty good; however, the service? Unbearably bad. My family and I were having a great day, so we decided to go out to breakfast at Red Wagon. We walked in and asked how long it would take to seat three of us, and the waitress told us 30 minutes. We had waited for a little over 20 minutes and seen a few families walk out, so we were getting hopeful when we saw a "regular" walk in and sit right down at a table which could have easily seated three in the corner. I walked in again and asked about the time. She told me another 30 minutes. When I asked about pulling a chair up to one of the other 2 vacant tables, she said we couldn't because it would create a problem for the dish washer. Alright, I get that, it's VERY cramped in there. BUT they had just let a SINGLE person walk in and take a 3-seater table in the corner all by himself? That's not right, at all. I was trying not to lose my temper, so I stepped back outside (in the sun, where me, my mother, and my dad who has stage 4 cancer and is not very strong because of chemo), where we were forced to wait, and told my mother what the waitress said. When my mom pointed out that this wasn't right, another "regular" got very rude and told her everyone has to wait, and the waitress agreed. Then my mom explained that we had just seen the guy walk in and sit down in the corner, and absolutely NOTHING was said to him about waiting. My mom left when she got flipped off, and we will NOT be returning. They ruined our whole day by their treatment of us. The bad service DEFINITELY outweighs the good food here. Like so many said before this place is great and tiny. I first heard of this place by servicing their coffee machine a few times. They offered me breakfast one day and I was kinda hungry so I couldn't pass up free breakfast. Man, my breakfast came on two plates, pancakes on one which were almost the circumference of the actual plate. Biscuits and gravy and a side of bacon on the other. The food was excellent and very hardy. The only place I could of think of that even came close to the portions was the old friendly cafe in oildale. I took my family there recently and my 6 year old son had the pancakes and I did not tell them how big they were and he could'nt stop laughing at the size of it. I have a picture of it somewhere and when I find it I will post it. Great food and make sure you come at a good time because you probably can't get more than a dozen people in there at a time. read more

Chooooo, Chooooooo. Get on board this converted caboose car and prepare yourself for an amazing culinary delight! Come early, come hungry, and bring the tums! You haven't had pancakes until you have a monstrous Red Wagon pancake. To quote my good friend Don: "They are the size of small manhole covers." That my friends is no exaggeration, these pancakes look like they have to be flipped with a snow shovel. They're so fluffy and flavorful, hands down the best I've had. Spread on some of the two pounds of butter you will get with it and then pour on some of the warm maple syrup they offer. I'm not a huge fan of chicken fried steak, but I'm a Red Wagon chicken fried steak fanatic. It melts in your mouth and it's topped with some of the best gravy you'll ever have. If you come on any day but Thursday; you're out of luck. But don't worry, try the other daily special when you come in, you can't go wrong with whatever it is. And if the food isn't enough, the prices are amazing. Enjoy a huge and delicious meal for around six dollars and that includes a drink. If you're a little far from Red Wagon, make the journey, I promise you will love it. read more

We had pancakes, biscuits and gravy, eggs and bacon As basic as it sounds, it was the best breakfast I've had! Pancakes were huge, fluffy, and made from scratch. The biscuits were also homemade and tastes like your grandmother's cooking while vacationing in a cabin by the lake. It's a small business and they only know how to cook things like they would at home--very simple, clean, uncomplicated seasoning and to please their guests/customers they make sure you're full by serving huge portions at an extremely reasonable price. Owners are very nice and when I said i'd like to recommend their place to Guy Fieri from Diners Drive Ins and Dives, they hadn't heard of it! That's how awesome small town people they are. It's really great! My boyfriend and I were fortunate to find this stop while we headed to San Francisco from Orange County. We eat out a lot and to many hoity toity breakfast places. This one is my utmost favorite. It must be the mix of small town feel, kind small business owners, and pure, hearty, clean and tasty food. I highly recommend it. We had just participated in an auto racing event at the local airport, on our way out of town we wanted to grab some lunch. There was literally nothing around but the Red Wagon, due to the great reviews we stopped by there. Basically it's a must go for breakfast or lunch in this area, hands down. The food is not going to win any culinary awards, but that's not the point. It's good diner style food, and honeslty the prices are so cheap you wonder if you'll be getting enough food or how good it could be at that price. Rest assured the food is great and the portions are very healthy. We all 4 of us got different meanls all ranging in the $5-7 range and for the most part barely were able to finish our food. We were out the door including tip and drinks for $40, a smashing deal. The place is run by a mother/daughter duo and the daughter yells endearingly to the kitchen "Mom we got any chicken fried steak left?!" This place is interesting. It's a local farmer hangout.I have been there a few dozen times since it is close to where I work. The restaurant is tiny and only seats about 20 people. It is an old converted passenger railcar which is kind of cool if you are in to those kind of things. The place is always clean. The food is fair to midland. I would avoid the "regular hamburgers" as my friends are usually disappointed. There are some dishes that are not on the menu but I cant mention them here because they always run out of that stuff when I run in there late (after 1PM) so I would be shooting myself in the foot if I let y'all know about the really good stuff. Sorry. The service is interesting. At first, I didn't care about the service but, after a while, you acquire a taste for it. Now, I like those people. Same people working there everyday. I think the waitress has some kind of vested interest in the restaurant. Maybe she owns it or maybe her parents own it. I am not sure. Of course, it usually feels like half the customers are either related to the waitress or have known her since she was a baby. I guess the bottom line is that they don't really pander to new customers. She is not rude and she does a good job of keeping your drinks filled but just dont expect to be greeted warmly...unless you go there regularly. I think they appreciate "regulars" way more than new customers. Oh, and they only take cash...which is why I dont go there as much as I would like. After hearing about this place from my rents, (they eat there a few times a week) i decided i had to check it out. HOLY MISS MOLY!!! This is a small café just south of the city of Shafter. It is run by a family that has run it for years. They have great food, generous portions, and the prices are reasonable. They also have very friendly staff. If you're in the Shafter area (or anywhere nearby) this would be a good choice for breakfast or lunch! read more

Seeing other reviews we thought we would check this out. We were pleasantly surprised. They have a very small menu consisting of one page but from what we ate and were given samples of everything is so very good. Good old fashioned cooking. Not at all greasy and large portions at reasonable prices. I had a cheeseburger with bacon that came with macaroni salad or potato salad, your choice. I chose the macaroni salad and was happy I did. Donna had a country ham and cheese sandwich with the potato salad. My macaroni salad was delicious as was her potato salad. My cheeseburger was very good and the bacon on it was exceptional. I can't wait to try their breakfast with this bacon. Donna's country ham and cheese sandwich was also very good with thick ham and lots of cheese. After our meal and both of us saying we couldn't eat another bite, up comes the extremely attentive and friendly server offering samples of their Friday special which is your choice of pinto beans or lima beans with cornbread. I told her since I was so already full I would like to taste just a small sampling of the lima beans. Out she came with 2 cups of lima beans in their juices along with a large portion of cornbread. Me thinking I'll just take a bite of each didn't work. Neither did it work for Donna. The lima beans were absolutely delicious as was the cornbread. We can't wait to come back and sample their pinto beans. After we paid the check our server brought us a to go box full of cornbread saying it's just going to go to waste if you don't take it. Wow so nice. We brought it home to have with chili. Not tonight for sure because neither of us will be hungry again for a while. It's a long drive from where we live but we will definitely be back. Found this hidden gem on our way to the CA coast! Its a small place, looks like it might be an actual old train wagon. The food was great! We had breakfast, and we loved it. The servings are huge, so we left the place with our bellies super full! Our waitress was super nice! I had a cheese omelet with hashbrowns and a biscuit, it was great! The gravy was wonderful! The food was pretty decent and the portions were as well. The menu is slightly small and lacks a lot of my favorite breakfast items but I was still satisfied. The biggest con for this place is that its cash only, I do not carry much cash these days so as we entered I saw I would need to make a trip for an atm, after we ordered I ventured off for one. The market across the street has an "ATM" at the counter offering your card to the cashier, the system was not working so after several tries and 2 cards later I had to drive down the road to the shell over at 7th standard to get the cash so if you plan to eat here remember cash first, the sitting is also very limited as its packed into an old train car. read more

The staff is friendly by neccessity since the restaurant may only comfortably sit about 15 people. It is tiny and hard not to get to know your neighbors.
