This was my first time dining at The Rice House, and my initial impression was a bit unexpected. The restaurant operates as a hybrid self-service concept, which I found very interesting. Walking in feels like a full-service restaurant, yet the service model is different. It was new to me, and I assume this is a growing trend inspired by Asia. The food, however, was excellent. My family and I ordered the beef chow fun to evaluate their wok skills, and it definitely met the standard. In addition, the rice pot was very flavorful and well executed . The pricing was fair, especially considering the high rent typically associated with food plaza locations. I will definitely be coming back. One thing I hope to see in the future is frog added to the menu.

The Rice House is one of my dad's favorite restaurants. There hasn't been many clay pot places so he often comes whenever he's craving it. He loves their beef chow fun as well so we often get it. His go-to is the pork ribs in black bean sauce clay pot rice and my mom likes the preserved meat clay pot rice. For soups, we usually get the Sea Coconut & Pear Stewed with Pork and watercress stewed with dried duck gizzard. I usually like drinking the soups because I love Chinese clear soups and they taste really light. I rank this place a 3/5 because everything is pretty oily in my opinion even the soups. I always notice the layer of oil in the soups and then it's very obvious for the rice and noodles as well. The rice is somewhat understandable because it helps with crisping up the rice for the hard crunchy bits but the beef chow fun is so oily that it coats my lips. Like many other reviews, you have to watch out for the many tiny bones especially in the soups and in the rice pots. Overall, still decent food but wish it was less oily. The old pictures I had on here were from the when the restaurant was owned by previous management/ owner. The food now is contained in paper material bowls!

A counter-service restaurant serving claypot-style rice in paper bowls (weird) We had a half-and-half rice bowl with roasted duck and Chinese sausage. We also ordered the mushroom chicken. Overall the meats were delicious but it's too much rice compared to the meats. Also there's no wok hei due to not serving it in clay pot. The packet sauce and their house chilies were good.

Lies. You walk up after seeing pictures of claypot rice on their menu posted on the window and expect a claypot served, but no. It's in a paper takeout container. After ordering at the counter (this place is totally self serve), we take a seat and pour our own water. When our "claypots" arrived, we were startled to see it in the paper bowls. The guy explained they are prohibited from serving it in a claypot as it is a cooking instrument and cited FDA regulation. Not believing it was a federal regulation, I asked if it was a Milpitas regulation and he confirmed, but I still don't believe him. Considering that the Chinese restaurant in the Ranch 99 Plaza next door serves their entrees on sizzling iron platters and the Korean restaurant at McCarthy serves their Bibimbap in Dol Sot (that hot stone bowl), it is a lie. The bowl itself was decent, even though it lacks enough scorched rice that is softened by this format. It is a disappointing experience as a result and I will not revisit. I feel the decision to serve it this way and the self service is a finance decision, which is detrimental to customer experience resulting in lower sales leading right back to finance. Place is clean at least.

This is a counter service restuarant that serves claypot styled rice bowls in plastic bowls whether you eat in store or not. I would recommend ordering online beforehand. I got a half and half rice with chicken and pork ribs. Their meats had good flavor but the meat to rice ratio is like 85% rice so I had about half of the rice left over when I was done. Although it's claypot rice, I'm not sure if this bowl of mostly plain white rice is worth the $18.50 price personally. They have plenty of tables for seating but it seems like most people just order online to go and those to do dine in store are mostly parties of 1. Overall, this could be a decent option for a group looking for a casual meal. There's also some outdoor seating in the plaza.

Go here for claypot rice! I recommend getting the half and half preserved meat and pork ribs. The rice is toasted and has a nice crunch, and the soy sauce and spicy sauce is delicious.

The rice house is a claypot rice restaurant but they don't actually give u a clay pit they only cook it and serve it in plastic to go bowls. Lots of ppl just order online and get delivery as not many ppl typically dine in. But if you do dine in, there's plenty of seating and lots of room with DIY water and stuff. Order and pay first st the register Overall food was okay, definitely needed to eat it with their sauce packet. Would recommend their half and half to try different things out.

DoorDash order, so only comment on the food this time. The soup is delicious and good portion. Totally the traditional canton style soup. The rice dish is the issue. Both the spare ribs and chicken clay pot rice have broken bones. Be careful when you chew on the food.

!!!CASH ONLY OR VENMO ONLY!!! It quite embarrassed us to download Venmo and pay the bills. And finally we have to Zelle the restaurant. Arrived around 7 PM and it takes a solid half hour before we got the food served. I think they're quite busy with takeout orders. There are roughly 10 tables inside and almost nothing is served. Indeed, I don't think they charged with tips. And it's quite noisy as it's closed to the kitchen. Food is actually tasty and very authentic flavor either the clay pot rice or the chicken with dried mushrooms. Chicken is very good and tender. Many customers are Cantonese speakers 街坊 so you can trust their food quality. I will deduct one star on the service: I think the waitress speaks Cantonese and talk to other customers in Cantonese. Obviously I can understand. But, when we order using Mandarin, she immediately switched to English and left us feeling awkward.

Let's cut to the chase. The only two meats worth getting are the preserved meat and the pork ribs, in that order. The beef and duck were just disappointing. Rice was nice and crispy on the bottom, so I will give them that. But what's with the two broccoli? They literally put exactly two pieces of broccoli in each bowl... for color? I found that strange. All in all, if you're specifically craving Chinese preserved sausage then by all means order a bowl of that. However you can easily buy a clay pot, the meat, and just steam your own bowl at home.

I came here with high hopes and expectations that this could be my next go-to comfort food restaurant. Sadly, I was a bit disappointed and will not be coming back. Customer Service The service was great overall considering there was only one employee managing the front cashier area and serving all of the tables with their orders. Food I ordered the following two items: #1: Preserved Meat Clay Pot Rice - $11.99 #11: Any 2 Selective Rice (Half & Half) - $14.99 It was a bit odd that only 2 pieces of broccoli were provided for each dish? The Chinese sausages were nicely marinated and cooked, but felt like something I can easily make at home? The rice for both of the dishes was a bit too crunchy for my liking. Hence, it did take about 25 minutes from placing the to go order for it to be ready. Each of the dishes can easily be shared amongst two people, if you're not super hungry and are okay with small portions of protein. They only accept cash or Venmo; be prepared for either of the two payment methods. Ambiance Open with lots of seating and waiting area for to go orders.

Pork Ribs in Black Bean Sauce Clay Pot Rice (takeout version)
    April Y.

At first glance at my takeout order, it looked a little plain. Once mixed though, it reveals the "rice crust" from the clay pot. Phew! I was reeeally worried but crisis averted! After trying this place a couple times, I think my top order is just the Black Bean Pork Spareribs Claypot. We tried a few others but it was "just ok". This time around, we just ordered 2 takeout orders for the fam, and it sufficiently fed the 4 of us. We were full and satisfied. Wouldn't say it was mind-blowing but it's the better of claypot rice options in the South Bay. Overall, I'd really give this 3.5 stars but rounded up because it's the best option I've found so far.

It's a good thing we did because the restaurant filled up completely 5 minutes after ordering. The inside of the restaurant is clean and modern, they have some art up on the wall that was cool to look at. The food was definitely the star though. We tried the BBQ pork and shrimp noodle rolls. Both were really good but my favorite was still the shrimp. I loved the veggies in the roll too. They can be a bit hard to pick up and eat because they're massive and cut into thirds. Other than that, the rice noodles are thin and silky and hold the sauce nicely. The sauce is also delicious. We also ordered the fish congee which was simple but comforting. It comes out PIPING hot so don't burn your tongue. Fish was tender and flavorful. Overall no complaints and the service was quick. Highly recommend!

The Chinese sausage pieces sprinkled throughout added extra flavor too. The bowl is deep so there seemed to be roughly 5 cups of rice. Unfortunately the laksa shrimp fried rice was disappointing in comparison. It didn't have much flavor overall - better than plain rice but definitely needed more seasoning. The menu lists homemade laksa sauce as an ingredient but we didn't taste that, and the dish wasn't spicy at all either despite the 1 chili pepper rating. But it looked just like the menu picture so maybe the description is wrong. Fried chicken with tom yum sauce came with 6 pieces. Very juicy. We also enjoyed the herbal roasted prime steak with sausage rice. The delicious rice had the taste of fish sauce. Most of the short rib slices were soft and a few were slightly chewy but overall decent quality. Some of the fattier pieces of meat were still attached to the bone.

It was very authentic and refreshing. Chicken noodle soup was amazing! I don't know about the 8 hour boiled chicken since it tasted like chicken breast broth and not bone broth but it was super delicious. The noodles were slimy and it was very comforting. No chili oil was provided on the table. The server spilled some broth on our table while carrying a hot bowl of soup. I recommend asking the servers to use a serving plate to bring over food to the customer's table. Spicy chicken with honey and potatoes- We've tried this dish at many different restaurants, mostly without potato chips and we didn't like it here. Some pieces of chicken were bland and others absorbed most flavors. The honey did not help the dish at all. There was no balance of flavors. I did not like the addition of packaged wavy potato chips into the dish. Dai style seafood- This dish was very disappointing. It was served cold which was the highlight of the dish but nothing tasted fresh. This dish took the most time to come out. The dressing tasted well made, it was sweet and savory but the seafood hadn't absorbed the dressing. There were mussels, clams, squid and calamari in it and the balance of flavors was out of proportion. Laksa shrimp fried rice- Good wok hey, chewy mushroom bits and little pineapple bits but shrimp was very hard to find. The addition of egg was nice. Fried chicken with tom yum sauce- Nicely fried very tiny pieces of chicken with 1 tsp of tangy sauce. Good dish. Nothing extraordinary. I would come back for the chicken noodle soup on a cold night!

Even though their parking lot had a lot of cars, it's so big that there're still plenty of spaces. Their inside was huge as well. Because of the high ceiling, it didn't feel too crowded, even though it was packed. They had a lot of servers, too, though getting the attention of one took a while. Our server highly recommended their sea bass 2 ways (congee and chow fun) on their daily special menu. We would have ordered that if they still had fish at ~2lb, but they only had fish at ~3lb, which would be too big for us, as we would like to order some dim sum as well. So, we just ordered from their dim sum menu. The 2 different house teas we ordered came out pretty quickly, but it took a while for the food to come. The Sauteed Turnip Cake in XO Sauce was the dish I liked the most. It could still use more XO sauce, though. Pork & Crab Roe Siu Mai was gigantic; taste was normal. I wished they had chili sauce at the table. We're too busy catching up and didn't bother to flag down someone to get some. The Fried Bean Curd Skin Roll w/ Shrimp was not bad, just a bit oily. The Fried Chinese Donut Wrapped in Rice Noodle w/ Dried Shrimp was on point; it came with a peanut sauce on the side. The Chicken Feet w/ Black Bean Sauce were well cooked and off the bones. The Salted Egg Yolk Lava Black Bun wasn't too sweet; the inside was more runny than we expected. We're already stuffed after having 6 dim sum dishes. Overall, dim sum was solid, but on the more expensive side. While their service was typical for a Chinese restaurant in the Bay Area, they did apply a 16% service charge to the bill automatically, which was stated on their menu.

First, let's start with cleanliness. The bathroom was disgusting. If this is where the cooks relieve and wash their hands, yikes! Literally a biohazard. Trash overflowing and everything was sticky and the toilets were very dirty. Just yikes. Also if you look at the dining inspection score on the Santa Clara county website, it scored a literal 20/100. This is worse than competitors for kitchen cleanliness. This explains the many food poisoning reviews here. We got served raw food and things that looked a bit spoiled here and luckily we spotted it and didn't get sick. Read the inspection report and it's really disgusting. I'm not sure how this place is still open. I get service at Chinese restaurants serving primarily Chinese immigrants isn't top tier, but this place takes it to the next level in being abysmal. The front desk staff is belligerent and they DO NOT RESPECT YOUR RESERVATION and make you stand outside and wait for up to 30 minutes. This happened to us a couple times. Also if you are an English speaker/non Chinese speaker, the front desk staff only speaks mandarin for the most part so good luck too if you are a Cantonese speaker. They also hold and reserve table numbers for refused to jump the waitlist and reservations. That was just the host staff, the waiters were not better. Waiters were very hard to flag down and sometimes they see you and ignore you because they don't want to serve you and do their job. They also are too busy sometimes and seem overworked so their employer (a very rich duo of brothers) need to treat their employees better and train them better so they have a better attitude for customers. We also had one waiter when cleaning our table poured our water glasses into a bowl then dumped in onto the carpet onto the ground which was a first for me and my family. This was very memorable in a bad way. The environment is also very uncomfortable to dine in. The seating is packed in so tight that it's so loud you can't hear the other people at your table. It's also a fire hazard since several emergency exits were visibly blocked by tables, chairs, or people crowding at the entrance. I've seen reviews here and on Google claiming to have reported the restaurant to the fire marshal. This seems to be true because there were several times the restaurant de densified the dining room before densifying it again weeks later. If a fire broke out, this would be deadly due to exits being blocked and the restaurant being over capacity. This place is just waiting for something really bad to happen. This place is also very expensive and claims to be an elevated authentic dim sum experience targeting Chinese immigrants and ABCs. And it sucks for the price paid given the food, service, and environment (and the literal fire danger they put you in) Finally, as many have complained here, there is a mandatory 18% gratuity and they demand a tip on top of it. They hide it from their menu so you don't find out, but that's illegal in California to hide a mandatory gratuity. Honestly, the gratuity isn't worth it for the nasty service and food anyways. The only have it because the owners know their restaurant is so bad they have to put a gratuity because otherwise people won't pay tips. What a joke of a business, I'm not sure why so many people still support it by singing its praises here and patronizing a restaurant that clearly doesn't care about either its employees or customer.

This restaurant has been around for a long time serving Cantonese cuisine in Milpitas. They have…read moredim sum available during lunch in addition to their regular menu items. A few dishes they do well here are the salt and pepper spare ribs (pork chop), salt and pepper fish fillet, dried scallop with egg fried rice - all their varieties of fried rice are yummy. Servers are courteous but if the restaurant is busy, servers don't come around as often as they should. You may have to flag them down. I recommend asking for everything up front if you don't see what you want at your table. For example, certain condiments or dipping sauces for your dim sum or glasses of water, extra napkins, etc. Request that stuff when the wait staff first show up or when you order. The ambiance is your typical Chinese restaurant. Simple and clean enough considering how long this restaurant has been in business. Nice chandeliers. Busy on the weekends for those coming in for dim sum. Restaurant is a decent size and has tables that are good for larger parties as well. Located in a busy plaza which houses many eateries near Lion Supermarket.

The staff is friendly and nice including the owner who knows my go to meal which is beat tendon stew with turnip. I have had other dishes and they are all superb and delicious. Not sure what all the complaints about the food are but I have dined in a lot of Chinese dim sum places including Koi Palace and I love this place more. I have not ordered a dish I did not like and I have tried quite a few of the chef specials already. Ambiance is huge and wide open with nice tables and cloth. I go after work at around 7pm and there is a nice spattering of regulars but I know this place gets crowded in the weekend.. Price is fair but the food and ingredients high quality so I don't care as good food trumps price. I love this place and am happy the owners and staff recognize me. The food is superb and tasty and the ambiance perfect when not busy. I highly recommend coming here for an awesome food and chef to table experience!

Everything is more expensive everywhere these days. The thing is, this place is solid. I've always had a good meal here. Everyone I've ever shared a meal with here has always enjoyed it. So, maybe the lower rating will scare others off. Personally, I'll enjoy eating here over and over again. BTW, their baked pork bun, chowfun, and tofu wrapped pork/mushroom dishes are delicious.
