Drizzle the black sauce and add some of their homemade hot sauce and it's so good! Beware that their hot sauce is super spicy! Although you can't eat inside, the togo is still really good. Claypot rice dishes or "bo jay fahn" in Cantonese, are homey comfort foods for many Chinese, and they are for me too. They're made with​ just a few simple ingredients. It's technically easy to make, but not so easy to perfect​​. I've only made it a handful of times, but getting that perfect evenly and thoroughly scorched bottom isn't that simple. Sometimes I got only bits of scorched rice, or it was on the verge of burning. You can cheat and take a short cut by making it in a rice cooker, but you won't get that nice crisp bottom. The Rice House, though, has this down to perfection! The star of all these claypot dishes is the sizzled bottom. The entire bottom should be evenly slightly crisp I personally like to eat that part separately to really taste the crunch, but many people just mix the rice, meats and the crispy rice altogether​. FOOD: The bottom scorches came out a bit different on different visits. On my first visit, the bottom was cooked longer, leaving a significantly​ darker and crispier crust. On my next visit, the bottom was noticeably lighter, due to lesser cooking times. I personally prefer it darker, but it's a matter of preference. I was told that they can tailor it to your liking. Simply let them know how you'd like it. I had a chance to try the Chicken with Dried Mushrooms with Preserved Meats ( a combo), the Pork Ribs with Black Bean Sauce, and the Chicken with Dried Mushrooms. My favorite was the combo. The Chicken with Dried Mushrooms was a bit heartier, but I liked the taste of the Pork Ribs with Black Bean Sauce better. I really liked that all the meats were very lightly seasoned. Not a bit salty! It may actually taste under-seasoned​ or even bland if you're used to meats that pack a more seasoned punch. However, just simply add their housemade sweet soy sauce to your dish, and problem solved! I really enjoy their sweet soy! It's more sweet than salty and blends really nicely with their claypots dishes. I would much rather season to my personal taste than have an overly salted dish, which is so common in Chinese restaurants. You have no idea just how much salt and MSG Chinese restaurants typically add to their dishes. Not a problem here! If their housemade sweet soy isn't enough seasoning for you, then ask for their hot sauce (not on the table). This is seriously HOT! I'm used to eating pretty spicy hot foods, and this was HOT HOT! Consider yourself forewarned. I'd taste a dab of it on your chopstick before you drench it all over your food. A little will go a long way. The claypot rice dishes are individually made to order. Our order took about 20 minutes each time. This is a good thing though! You don't want pre-made reheated claypot rice, do you?! AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT: I wouldn't mind a bit more generosity in the portions of meat and especially the vegetable toppings. The Chicken with Dried Mushrooms​ came with just a few small pieces of mushrooms and two or so small pieces of broccoli. They could also work on enhancing the visual presentation of all their claypots. During the peak of lunch, they were out of two items we were interested in ordering: the Country Style Fried pork and the long beans. Additionally, they no longer serve the Bitter Melon and Yellow Bean Stewed with Chicken Feet, yet it wasn't crossed out on the menu. SERVICE: This is a local family-owned​ business, with family working on the premises. Service was really good (unlike many Asian restaurants in the surrounding area) and helpful. They came and checked on how everything was a couple of times, and kept the water glasses full without having to ask. This should be the norm at all restaurants, but unfortunately is an anomaly at​ many Asian restaurants. MISCELLANEOUS​: Be sure to lock your vehicle and leave nothing of value in your car! There are signs about this posted at all the storefronts and everywhere throughout the parking lot here, and in the neighboring McCarthy Ranch parking lot. These signs aren't being posted for the fun of it. The parking lots for both shopping centers have been notoriously known for car break-ins. When I was there, I saw the remains of broken car window glass in both parking lots. This is a very real problem! Storeowners at the McCarthy Ranch told me that they had customers who had parked for less than 10 minutes only to return to find their car broken into in broad daylight. My all-time #1 favorite claypot restaurant isn't located anywhere near here, but I'd say The Rice House comes in second. They've really perfected the elusive thoroughly crispy crust at the bottom of their claypot dishes, and that's why I love claypot rices. Count me in! read more

This place is brand new and very popular!! Waited at least 20-30 minutes at 1pm on a Saturday. Surprised there were people still in line to eat lunch at this time. The rice was cooked perfectly and crispy!! My favorite part. I think $11.99 for just chinese sausages is pretty steep. They should def have it more as an add on. I ended up getting the black bean spareribs and chinese sausage combo for $14.99. Didnt have any blackbean flavor or visually. I think the dish lacked a lot in flavor. Theres no green onions or ginger to enhance it and rice was probably cooked through before the meat was added in to. Service is attentive and the restaurant personnel receive criticism & suggestions well given they just started a few months ago and do not have their full menu yet. The signature part of the meal is actually the rice and how it is cooked (old style) in a pot. The very first time i ate here, it was perfect. Yellowish rice crispy at the bottom and all around the sides. The 2nd time, it didn't have the crispness at all and i told one of the servers. He mentioned that some customers don't want the bottom of the pot's rice to be too crispy, but i can ask for it when i order. Great. Taylor to customer needs. The other main menu items are the double boiled soup (individually served for one). These are made traditionally via a double boiled method (google it). This way, the soup looses no steam and the soup is intensely flavored. Until now, they are serving only one kind of soup per day instead of the full menu of 4-6 varieties. Soup is good. When I first walk in, I saw rice pot in a paper bowl. I thought it's not going to be any good, but boy was I wrong. Never judge a book by its cover. The clay pot rice was on point. Like the other reviews said, they served them in plastic containers which I was fine with. But it was still really underwhelming. The meat to rice ratio was very very off, which again is kinda fine if there was good sauce. But the sauce wasnt there either. They threw in a packet of soy sauce. The place was busy when I got there during lunch hours, but I managed to get a table. The staff were attentive and helpful as I was handed a menu. I decided on a basic one: Preserved Meat Clay Pot Rice. My Clay Pot Rice came out relatively quickly. The Rice was just right, and the Preserved Meat was tasty. When they bought out the rice in paper bowl in 15 minutes, I was suspicious if there would be any crispy rice at the bottom. Surprisingly, it's like a real clay pot rice cooked for 30 minutes - all the rice are the bottom are crispy. I don't know how they did that. And for 15 dollars, the price is good. And the rice (both soft crispy) and the meat tasted very good. Another good thing is that they don't ask for tip. So 15 plus tax is all I have to pay. Came here for lunch. Place is a hybrid restaurant/cafeteria style. You order at the register (cash only). Their Clay Pot Style rice is unique in which they cook it in a clay pot, but bring it out to you in a disposable to-go container. In fact, all their food are served in to-go containers. Their Clay Pot rice had plenty of meat. What's cool is even though it's in a to go container, there's burnt rice on the bottom. The vegetables in the Clay Pot was a disappointment as there were only two pieces of broccoli. I recommend ordering another side order of vegetables. You can skip their apps because their portion size can be deceiving as the container looks small but in fact it's pretty big. The food is pretty delicious here but I don't know why they use disposable bowls/utensils here. Especially when we are putting food here that is directly from the high heat, makes me wonder how bad that reacts with those disposable plastic containers. The whole idea here is that the rice gets cooked in the ceramic bowl and the rice continues to crisp in there as you eat. I hope they bring those out next time for dine in. read more

There are a million options for dinner in this plaza. To the left, you can slurp up a warm bowl of pho, while to the right, you can crunch on some popcorn chicken. It is safe to say that I will never be back to the Rice House. I waited 25 minutes outside in the cold waiting for that home cooked meal of claypot rice with preserved meat, but instead, I was left with disappointment. The front worker who had one job to pack the claypots mistakenly gave away our order to another customer that came after me. I watched him walk away to his car and storm back in with the open container complaining about the wrong order. 5 mins later and what a surprise...my order was ready... I confronted the worker and asked if this was the same pot of rice that was returned. He had the audacity to say "yes, I changed the bag!" with the look like it was perfectly normal. The least you can do is offer to remake the food... but I guess that was too much to ask for. I am surprised with poor hygienic standards and workers with no customer service experience can maintain a 4 star rating on yelp. Repackaging food that another customer brings to their car is unacceptable.They just might be receiving an anonymous tip to the Santa Clara Food and Safety department soon. Twas a Sunday and the wait at Koi Palace was ridiculous, we looked around and voila: a brand new clay pot rice joint right down stairs. Upon entry we were greeted by the aroma of burned crispy rice, always a good omen. Clay pot rice: 4/5 - Preserved meat clay pot rice ($11.99): the classic Cantonese clay pot rice and it was good. They used some kind of nonstick earthen pot instead of the traditional clay pot, but were still able to create a thick layer of burned crispy rice at the bottom, albeit it was a bit thicker than usual. The preserved meat and Cantonese sausage were plentiful, they put a few piece of Chinese cauliflower on top instead of the usual green veggies. You can scoop the sweet light soy sauce into the mixture to make it more tasty. - Pork ribs in black bean sauce clay pot rice ($11.99): again it was very good esp the ribs which were of good quality in terms of it's meat:bone ratio as well as flavor and texture. The rice again were of similar quality, with thick layer of burned crispy rice and few pieces of Chinese cauliflower. - In general both dishes had good flavor and enough smoky aroma, although they were still a few notches beneath the ones in HK or Guangzhou where they used charcoal fires and traditional clay pots. Although we all loved crispy rice at the bottom, their layer was probably a bit too thick. We tried to order the shredded pork with Sichuan pickle as well as the salted fish pork belly clay pot rice but they said not available, odd? You can also add extra toppings such as hot spring egg, scrambled egg, salted egg, etc.. They have other dishes such as pig's feet as well as Cantonese style salted chicken, the latter is not easy to find outside of Asia. Soups: 4.5/5 Sea coconut and pear stewed pork soup ($4.99 each small jug): perfect Cantonese soup for the winter, light and clear broth with good subtle flavors, with pieces of lean pork and pear for nibbling. They offer other classic Cantonese soups: watercress with duck gizzard, bitter melon, overlord flower with pork bones, or plain chicken. Value: 3/5 It's not cheap here but rent is high in this plaza. I go to Oakland Chinatown and get the same clay pot rice for $7 to $8 instead of $12. Ambience: very new and clean Service: it was not too busy, staff were attentive and friendly, offering helpful suggestions, they spoke both mandarin and Cantonese. Payment: at this point they only accept cash or Venmo, very curious Overall this new establishment served credible authentic Cantonese style clay pot rice and soups. I would def return, especially for those soups, and perhaps even the salted chicken. Addendum: we returned 1 week later and tried other clay pot dishes: the chicken mushroom was good, the country style fry pork was just ok. Our favorites were still the pork ribs in black bean sauce and preserved meat. Claypot rice is always so satisfying and the rice bowls at The Rice House definitely hit that craving! We came here as a party of 3 a little after 11 AM on a Saturday. (Note: The parking lot gets a little chaotic as there's limited space and a lot of great restaurants and shops within the same plaza). We stepped in and were a little sad to realize that it was takeout only with no dine-in or outdoor dining options. However, that did not deter us from trying out their claypot rice. I got the preserved meat claypot which consists of pork belly and Chinese sausage (a classic)! My significant other got the half and half bowl with half spare ribs and half chicken and mushrooms. Our friend also got the half and half bowl, but with roasted duck and beef. Upon ordering, it takes about 15-20 minutes to pick up our orders as they make it to order, which is always a great sign. We got the food promptly and fortunately, there were benches outside so we were able to enjoy our lunch fresh! We each started digging into our bowls and we all had the same reaction. The rice was so delicious and perfectly crispy on the bottom like it should be. All the flavors were spot on and it's definitely an authentic claypot bowl. I have been looking all over a legit clay pot rice spot in the Bay and none has come close to a spot I had in SF. This, however, did come pretty close though. The meat that comes with the rice came in absolute abundance! There were endless amounts of preserved pork and Chinese sausage. The spare ribs were super flavorful and everything just came together so well in one bowl. The rice was good as well, slightly oily but that was what brought the flavor. My favorite part was that even though it didn't get served in a clay pot, and I don't know how they were able to do it, but they were still able to put the burnt crispy rice at the bottom! Nothing is better than when you finish the normal soft rice on the top and reach the bottom to find crispy rice. It is absolutely delicious when combined with the soy sauce they give you. read more

I was a bit afraid to try this shop, because I've been to many a restaurant that claim to do this kind of rice pot. But we took the plunge, and it was worth it. The rice pot is perfectly charred at the bottom, at which they put it in a take out container, so that it doesn't burn. Despite being in a cardboard box, it's still quite hot. Service is pandemic friendly. Expect to get your own water from conveniently placed water dispensers near some tables. There are also extra soy sauce packets for the rice pot. Recommend getting the duck - they seem to have rendered the fat out of it, leaving very lean morsels, very tasty. Also, check out the authentic hot sauce. read more

There are for sure better options in San Francisco but for south bay, this will suffice for clay pot rice. Pro tip ask for extra sauce to drench one on the ribs and another for the rice. General go-to's are the following: - pork rib clay pot rice - no frills and basic and gets the job done - chicken and mushroom clay pot rice - more on the blander side but good for something more comforting and cleaner tasting - chicken soup - comes in one of those big takeout soup containers (if you get a large it comes with 3 of those containers fully filled to the brim) - I like these when I'm not feeling well and am craving soup, also good to use as a base and add mini wontons into for a comforting and substantial meal. read more
