Once a wonderful establishment... It is not the same Rivers Edge it once was. Sadly after our visit Saturday, we will never return. My husband and I have been coming here for years. Ot was always our go to for a nice dinner or where we would bring friends and family because we loved this spot so much. Ownership must have changed because it appears all the staff have turned over. Service is terrible and whoever takes care of their inventory needs to find a new job because the last two times we have been here, they have been out of substantial food items or beer. I will share each of the last 2 experiences we have had, with last Saturday resulted in us walking out before even getting drinks. The first bad experience was about a year ago. We show up i believe it was a Wednesday night, we're seated and promptly told that they were pretty much out of every menu item. Being my husband's almost 90 year old aunt was in town we but the bullet and decided to stay. So when its time to order we literally asked for about every item on the menu and we're told they were out. They basically only had fried foods or salads. So we order. Service took forever, the girl is not suited for the service industry. Here's the kicker, when our aunt asked for a to go container they said THEY WERE OUT OF FREAKING TO GO CONTAINERS. Absolutely ridiculous. Our second and final trip we were served be the same girl who I have no idea is still around because she has zero service skills and a personality of a rock. We had friends visiting from Texas and we thought we would give it a shit. My husband asked for a coors light bottle girl responds "we're out of that". So we go down the line and my husband finally asks "well what do you have" her response? "I can tell you what we don't have". At that point my husband goes into the bar to see what they have and they offer him a bar menu(what a novel concept) he went to ask if they had coors light on draft both bartenders look him straight in the face and walk away. At that point he came outside and said its time to go. The service here is a joke and thats not how you treat people who are spending their hard earned money there. Just because you have a nice view doesnt mean you can have crappy service and constantly be out of items that people are coming for. Save your time and money. read more

River view: excellent Service: lackluster, and inefficient Food: sub par, overcooked Drinks: watered down cocktails Price: too high just for the view Went on a holiday, the place was not busy, yet the service was slow, and lacking. Menu items were unavailable, salad never came, up- charge for the garlic fries, but no garlic. Waited for a consonant that was asked for and waited to order a second drink, but ended up going to the bar for both. Would only come again for the view. Probably would not order food again!! Beautiful setting by the Stanislaus river! Charming, historical Knights Ferry. Outside seating as well as the patio. Comfortable and a local favorite for fine dining, casual and parties. Great bar area with beautiful views. Very green and beautiful year round. Sorry but terrible service and non- friendly staff for the most part. Hasn't improved in that area. But definitely recommend! I have not even one complaint about this place. Was greeted immediately by Haley and she was our server. Such a sweet gal, her attitude and service was so pleasant. Our meal was very large portions and we did not have to wait long. The patio area is pet friendly so we were able to bring our dog. Water was provided for our dog without even asking. We had my daughter's wedding here. Ceremony in the grass area along the river. April makes a beautiful backdrop. Reception was on the patio and we had a taco bar just as she always wanted. The service for all the wedding went off perfectly. read more

We had an apricot beer and a lemon drop to drink. Excellent. Ordered a Wild Fire Burger and the Southwest Salad. Burger was cooked to perfection. Fixings were delicious. A tiny kick. Best burger we've ever had. Had the garlic fries as a side. Southwest salad was excellent too. I will let the photos tell the story. Service was great. Friendly and attentive employees. We were seated under a patio structure overlooking the River. The overhead fans cooled down the area. It's a beautiful setting. We recommend, this restaurant highly. The River's Edge Restaurant is like getting away without getting away. Give it a try. read more

I stopped in yesterday and what a delight. Loved the whole vibe of the place. The potatoes salad is excellent, shout out to the chef, the burger was cooked to perfection and the sweet potatoes fries are to die for. Just a wonderful inviting place and top notch staff. This is really a place to stop in for a very relaxing atmosphere and they have a outside deck that you can soak in all the views from the river. Just can't say enough. read more

Went to River's Edge on Tuesday 3/10 for brunch arriving about 11am. The weather was perfect. We wanted outside seating for the river view (awesome spot). We also had brought our doodle for his first outdoor dining experience. Our waitress was awesome. So accommodating and attentive. There are many seating options and you can even walk down to the river's edge. The food was great. We were offered either the breakfast menu or lunch. The facilities are clean and comfortable. My boyfriend and I had lunch on 7/12/26. I have always loved coming to this restaurant and it is a gem to the Modesto/Oakdale vicinity. Today, however, was a disappointment. Our server, Mollee, took our order and then pretty much never checked back to refill our water or offer another round of drinks before our meal was served. We had to ask the hostess to talk our server. That took another 10 minutes even after our meals had already been served to us. The restaurant was not busy today and it seemed like there were plenty of servers handling the customers. When our server finally arrived, we were treated so rudely and she was very dismissive. At one point, she blamed me for being rude and said she was going to transfer our tab to another server. It is not cheap to dine out these days and and we drove 30 miles to enjoy a nice lunch near the river. Had it been a very busy day, it would have been more understandable. On a positive note, the food was great and the view was amazing as always. GM read more

Im so excited to say they have tuna melts. it was soooo good. Im picky. Im a foodie. I was nervous to order. The server was sooo awesome and told me they just made it so it was fresh! So I went for it. I'll post pics. Very nice portion and served with your choice of salad; potato or pasta. Or fries. Have to have fries w/my tuna melts. Asked for pickles on side and got crunchy sliced dill pickles that were perfect adornment to this fresh sandwich. The view goes without saying... gorgeous. I have never seen grass grow under water before but at this restaurant. Rolls right into water. Very clean amd dog friendly which is so nice. Beautiful day and can't wait to go back! read more

We made reservations here for Mothers Day brunch. 1. We were a party of 14 and they sat us at two separate tables. 2. Brunch was $50.00 per person which is outrageous, not one of us ate even close to $50.00 worth of food. 3. I guess because it was self serve, the wait staff didn't find it important to check on us. It was difficult to get our waters and coffees refilled. 4. They automatically added an 18% gratuity on our bill because we were over a party of six. But wait, we served ourselves? That place was packed, I'm sure they made a killing. Shame on you! read more

The location, view and food were all adequate to good. I cannot complain about those three. I suffer a moderately severe allergy to gluten and have to be careful. If I get gluten in my food the result is severe pain and sickness within 15-20 minutes, that can last weeks to a month. I don't seem to react to trace amounts of cross contamination but still have to be diligent. I always start my orders with "I have a gluten allergy." 99% of places respect this and it triggers them to make sure the kitchen is careful about how they handle my food and to direct me in the best things to order. When I told the older wait person "I have a gluten allergy.", her immediate and curt response was "oh no no, we don't do that here, we don't do that here!" "You mean gluten free bread....?) I tried to interject, that it would be nice but not necessary. I went on the tell her I wanted the burger but not lettuce wrapped, just on a plate, but before I could even finish my sentance she interrupted me stating again curtly, "We don't do lettuce wraps here!" I reiterated that I wanted it on the plate to eat with a fork. I also asked about the potato salad. I can make potato salad from memory, so I know what goes in it normally but I can't risk that someone thinking flour is a good ingredient, so I asked about that and she went on the curtly and with a tone insinuating I was an idiot what the ingredients of potato salad are. A simple, no wheat would have sufficed, Then she goes on the tell me they don't have potato salad only macaroni salad, Coleslaw, etc..... I then made the mistake of confirming the fries are probably not safe and she again with a curt tone tells me they're frozen, bla, bla, bla! I quickly chose a side salad. She was perfectly fine with how she took my two companion's orders. Now I am with two other people. They love to travel and eat out and I drive them. There is a low probability I will ever want to eat here again and therefore they won't either. That's three meals, multiple times this business (I assume they like to make money) won't be getting from this family. This experience ruined the serenity of me enjoying my lunch and put a damper on my first visit to Knights Ferry. I love it there. It's a quaint little foothill town. I lived for decades in a very similar location and otherwise it felt like home to me. It's unfortunate that one clearly unhappy person can't put her preconceived ideas about someone with a gluten allergy aside and realize I am just a woman who hates needing to even ask for these things but needs to not get sick! It's not a choice, preference or political ideology. It's a health issue! Treating anyone like she did me in very poor form. read more

Pretty bad dining experience all around. Food was gross, soggy, and cold when it got to us and service was horrible. The gal I was dining with asked what the soup of the day was and the server said "veggie and lentil soup. I don't recommend it, it's gross". I thought that was so strange?... the person I was with sampled it and decided to get it as their meal because it wasn't bad. First time trying this restaurant, it was a beautiful day so the outside area was perfect! The view is amazing, we tried the calamari appetizer which was delicious, great tasting batter that they use. For our entrees we got the steak salad, and the fish and chips. Digged in to both before remembering to take a picture. The cook on the steak was perfect and so tender, big salad and all fresh ingredients. The fish and chips had a perfect cook, as well as the fries too. We will definitely be coming back for dinner! read more

Cool location and friendly staff, but the food was terrible. Tried calling ahead and the phone kept disconnecting; staff said management switched to a cell system with very spotty reception. Both Rivers Edge burgers were prepared incorrectly, and the lava cake was completely inedible--severely overcooked. The lone server worked hard and wasn't at fault; this is clearly a management and kitchen issue. Very disappointing overall. read more

Wanted so bad to like it! We drove 40 minutes for a nice dinner after not being there in at least 15 years, and my friend had never been....After being seated it took a while for a server to come.Finally, Molly came with a very dirty apron on to take our drink order. I ordered the Murphy Goode Cab and my friend ordered a Chardonnay. After a while she came back to tell me "we're out of whatever wine you ordered". I ordered a different cab. When she delivered it, my glass was obviously dirty with old lipstick stains around the whole rim. I scraped it off, only because she was no where to be found to ask for another glass. She then took our dinner order and that was the last time we saw her until she asked us if everything was ok when we were finished with our dinner. (A different server waiting on other tables brought our dinner to us) We ordered the Philly Sandwich and a Hamburger. (We were assuming there would be more dinner options besides sandwiches, burgers and fish and chips...although there was a steak special) When we got the bill, we were charged extra for fries! My husband and I tried this River's Edge on Sunday around 1:00pm. It was busy but a friend had referred us, they said it was worth the wait. Let my say it was! The inside is a rustic style very nice. Great looking bar area. We were seated outside facing the river, it was beautiful and relaxing. I didn't mind a little wait, my husband and I just sat back and just soaked in the view. Our server Gabriella, was amazing! Even though it was busy she was very nice and made sure we had everything we needed. She checked on us in the perfect amount of time. She didn't hover and she didn't disappear. The food was great it's the typical American food but it's done very well. My Husband had the Wildfire burger, I had the fish and chips. Super yummy Husband loved his also. Btw I never like eating outside at a restaurant, I loved eating outside here. Side point, I noticed there were not many flies around. There were a few, not many. No flys we're circling our food. We didn't have to wave are hand around during our meal. I was trying to figure out why and I noticed they have a good size citronella bush. A citronella plant is known for being a fly, mosquito, and tick repellent. Great idea to have that outside next to some tables. I will definitely be coming back. read more

Where to start? We have been here before and have had a great experience. Today may have been a one off but it wasn't good. The restaurant made the decision to change their opening time from 11:30 to 9:30 and expand a breakfast menu. )I would suggest to management that you staff accordingly.) We arrived at 10:15 and were warned by the waitress that she was alone and to please be patient. Note: There were only two tables seated when we arrived. Since it was the only place in town we waited patiently, and waited. 20 min later we were finally offered something to drink. We were left with our drinks for some time before someone came to take our order. Breakfast was ordered and it took a considerably long time for our food to arrive. Some of the orders were wrong but it was 11:30 and we were just happy to have some food. An hour and a half to get breakfast served was a bit much. 3 stars because the food was good but the service was extremely lacking. read more
