I struggle with this review. We've been visiting family in Hayward for over 18 years, spending much of our summers and even portions of the winter up north and know the town like the back of my hand. I've been to The Robin's Nest multiple times and most times, I could easily give them a 4-star rating and label them "The Best Breakfast in Hayward." The location is 20 minutes out of town, so it's not a convenient location if you are staying near downtown Hayward. The restaurant is almost always packed, especially on a weekend. Plan on waiting 30 minutes at least on a weekend or around a holiday. The food is fantastic! Everything we've had, from kids meals for my littles, to the potato pancakes, simple eggs and toast, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, is all fantastic. The Ranchero Burrito is by far our favorite breakfast! It used to come with a side of chips, but doesn't anymore. My teens were looking forward to that again and were disappointed that it was removed as a side. The staff is quite nice. Because of all these things above, I'd really like to give them 4-stars, but I cannot due to our last experience over a holiday weekend. I will say that the last time we went, the service was terrible. We did wait for 30 minutes (we were fine with the wait) and our original server got our beverages very fast right as we sat down. But then it seemed we were forgotten. Our breakfast server never came by our table to take our food order (and we knew what we'd be ordering when we sat down). We waited over 25 minutes at the table after waiting 30 minutes outside before anyone took our order. I almost packed up my family and left. The table behind me did leave, in fact! We had to ask multiple times for our server who seemed to be working the front room but we were in the back room. Then we had to wait an another 20 minutes for our food for our family of 5 (which was a reasonable time to wait for a meal). But true to form that day, we couldn't find our server when our drinks were empty (after waiting so long we would have liked a refill at least once) and again when we needed to pay our bill. Although their food is good, I know I can cook just as well as they can, if not better, and I'm not sure I'll be back. The service was just bad enough to make me not want to return. The food is excellent though! So, if you plan ahead and know you'll wait and can even have your selections chosen before you sit down, it's worth the drive out of town. read more

We've had good meals here before, but this morning was a trainwreck. Best breakfast in the Northwoods? Maybe, but I really can't say, since our breakfasts never arrived. The restaurant wasn't esp. busy (no one was waiting for a table) and the kitchen seemed to be functioning, since breakfasts arrived for diners who came in after us. After asking about the whereabouts of our meals a couple of times, we finally left, 40 mins or so after ordering. It's entirely possible that our waitress noticed, though it's highly unlikely that she cared. Very disappointed. read more

Read about The Robin's Nest from out AAA Magazine and decided to try it last week. Nice atmosphere, plenty of seating for a small place. Service and staff were slow and standoffish. The food was good, everything came with 2 eggs. I'm not much of an egg person so I looking for different options. I got the strudel blueberry French toast... basically blueberry bread done in the French toast way... good but not excellent. And I got my eggs scrambled! read more

"Best breakfast in the Northwoods" is advertised and we can confirm the statement is true. One of us had the 4 cheese omelet and the other had their signature wild rice and Swiss omelet. Order crispy hash browns with onions as your side. Great service! Only open until 2pm. Days open in summer differ from winter hours, so check website. read more

We've vacationed in the area for many, many years and the Robin's Nest is, bar none, our favorite breakfast/brunch target while we're up there -- good thing it's reasonably close to where we stay! I generally get either the corned-beef hash or an omelet, but my special treat here is the potato pancakes, which are savory and just a little crunchy. What makes this place memorable for us is the great "Up North" view of Reed Lake across the road: you could show me a picture out the window and I'd know exactly where the picture was taken and start getting hungry for potato pancakes.
