Well we ate here for the first time and it was not very good BBQ. The beans are not BBQ beans, not even close to baked beans and no flavor. Had different kinds of beans as well. Very disappointing. Service was ok, but was overcharged for kids meal. The kids meal hotdog was huge. Simply to large for my 6 year old granddaughter. The pulled pork sandwiches we ordered were very, very dry. Good BBQ - Just KC has the most competition at BBQ in the world. Doesn't compare with JackStack or Joe's KC, but it is good and has kids eat free. They have some unique BBQ bowls with up to 4 meats and BBQ burritos. read more

Wanted to try a different BBQ place. The turkey was not bad. But the brisket was untrimmed and very fatty and was precut was as the turkey. Decent sized portions. The baked beans were definitely different with Lima beans. All that said I think I will make the drive to our usual BBQ restaurant. read more

Begin rant. You know... some Yelpers just don't get it... and give all of us a bad name. This is an eatery first. Judge on the food 1st. Service second. Never on ambiance... because a gas station is ambiance to some while white linens and crystal means ambiance to others. And good God almighty, never judge on free stuff and optional stuff like chips at a Mexican place or sauce at a BBQ place. This is a quick serve concept place as well. If Everything was throw away someone would judge it for being too wasteful. If you have to separate dishes from trash (like Panera), so the hell what?! Then there complaints about the BBQ coming from a chaffing dish or saran wrap. Did you know that every single rack of ribs from OK Joes comes from a saran wrap cocoon of love before you taste it? Yeah... I didn't think you did. Pork shoulder, too. Almost all BBQ is reheated, and it tastes better that way. The best BBQ I have every had was smoked, then vacuum packed and refrigerated, and finally slowly reheated. People are mighty quick to judge this little place on what the big boys already do. Sorry if you are in my crosshairs here, but Yelpers need to get real! Rant over. So, specifically (so others know what is going on), I had a burnt ends plain sandwich. It came on a white bun. Soft, and not toasted. Plenty of meat. Bark and seasoning present. Good smoke flavor. Some pieces moist and others dry... which is the essence of burnt ends in my opinion. I would order them here anytime. The sides: Beans were just fine with a mixture of bean types and nice pieces of bacon or salt pork. Not too sweet and not too bland. The Carolina slaw was supposed to be vinegar based but completely missed the mark, lacking zing or spice. The free stuff: I tried a small bit of "original" sauce in the big bottles on the tables. Lots of vinegar zing and plenty of spices. I liked it. It will work much better on pork than on beef. Coke Zero is always a welcome soda at the fountain. Paper towels at the table are a BBQ standard. Glad to see 'em... I bitch when they are not there. Fast service. Efficient. Smiling. Cost... $9.20ish. THAT is how to review, folks. You can be funny if you want. I add humor sometimes. Last night I was lucky enough to be invited to the soft opening of The Rub. Let me just tell you, they seem to have cornered the market on unique flavors and textures. The Rub is set up in Chipotle-style ordering. Walk up to the counter, choose Sandwich, Platter or Bowl. Choose your meat, adjust your toppings and extras as needed. The sandwiches and bowls are about $9, you get a lot more food in the bowl so if you're looking for value there it is. The beans are a lightly sweet and nicely spiced mixture of several beans (everything from kidney to butter) that give this side a variety of textures and flavors. The cheesy corn has a subtle smoky flavor to it, good ratio of cheese:corn. The Super Star (spirit fingers) of the show is the corn bread. It has a thick, sweet crust and moist, almost brownie-like inside that blurs that line between side and dessert. I had a burnt end Poor Boy, hold the hot sauce and add barbecue (what can I say, I can't take the heat). The Poor Boy is a 6" crusty roll, cut open and piled with the meat of your choice (burnt ends in this case) and topped with coleslaw and fries. The burnt ends were juicy and full of flavor. The coleslaw tangy and crisp. The fries, house-cut from real live potatoes, had a really great flavor but were not quite hot last night. Because I dined with a big group of very generous people, there was a lot of plate passing and tasting. I was able to try the smoked meatloaf (sleeper hit, it's the least ordered item on the menu and one of the best) pulled pork (tender and juicy) and a nibble of brownie (moist and gooey with subtle chocolate flavor). I also had a lovely fall-off the bone-tender rib, the meat had great flavor but could use a touch more seasoning. The sauce at The Rub, they only have one at this time, is a sweeter base with a slow burn to it that really creeps up on you. I felt silly with my giant cup of soda but came to appreciate it as I finished my meal. The Official Grand Opening is Sunday. I expect them to be busy, very busy. It's not likely I'll make it it, Dad's requested Tanners (ugh...), but I will be back soon. read more

Our new favorite Bar B Q place... hands down. I was out running errands and spotted "The Rub". I called my husband and told him we should try it out. We rode our bikes there and could smell the Bar B Q long before we arrived at their location. The smell was just a tease. The food was amazing. The owners (I assume) were a man and a woman who were running around making sure everybody was satisfied. I had pulled pork, brisket, beans, potato salad and fries. The meat was extremely tender. The beans were unique and outstanding, the fries were piping hot and fabulous and the potato salad tasted just like my mama's. =) We really enjoyed the flavor of the bar-b-que sauce as well. The dining area is simple, clean, and tonight, was full of customers. We felt very comfortable in our shorts and flip flops. A real family atmosphere. We plan on being faithful customers. =) Thrilled to have them in the neighborhood! They're a great addition to the area! read more

Came here on the way to a friend's house to try some Kansas BBQ. I am from Texas so I was excited to try something different. Came in and was immediately greeted by someone behind the counter. Very nice guy and easily helped us with the menu to order what we wanted for a group. Food was packed well and it wasn't very expensive. At the house we found that the portions were small and very dry. Not a fan but I think it was the restaurant not the quality of Kansas BBQ. :) read more

I had the pulled pork sandwich and it was one of the worst i have ever eaten. The restaurant is not close to much else but there is a trash can outside of it. The 1st time I went was w/my family. My husband had the "Poor Boy", my son & I had a burnt ends sandwich and my nephew had a pulled pork sandwich. Between all of us, we had several sides: fries, corn bread, creamy style cole slaw, bbq beans & cheesy corn. All of us were very happy with our food! I LOVED the cheesy corn, SO good! My (12yr old) son ate very quickly, which is rare! My nephew (17yr) said it was "FIRE". Which, is teenage lingo for really good! :) Both of the boys have asked to go back several times since then! My husband & I agreed that The Rub will be our go to place for BBQ. Oklahoma Joe's is farther away & Zarda's is so over priced! This place is close to home, family friendly, inexpensive, fast and good! I also appreciate the family owned aspect! You can see the owners & their children hanging around the place! I would much rather support a local business. I have been to The Rub w/my co-workers. It again, received great reviews! It's a great place for the lunch hour! Good, fast & inexpensive. 1 of my co-workers said she spends the same amount on a cold sandwich, chips & drink for lunch at Mr. Goodcents. Oklahoma Joe's is by far my favorite BBQ joint in KC. You just can't beat it. But, I do like to venture out of my comfort zone and see what else KC has to offer. We are one of the best BBQ cities in America after all. I was pleasantly surprised by this place. My sister lives rather close so I've stopped in here a few times and I've never had a bad meal. I usually go with the 2 meat + 1 side platter. The chicken, pork, sausage & burnt ends are all delicious. My favs are the burnt ends and sausage. The sausage is pretty peppery and spicy, but a few bites of cheesy corn afterwards will comfort your taste buds. The corn isn't as good as Jack Stack's corn bake, but still very tasty. The staff always is friendly. I was watching my 2 nieces one afternoon and we came here for lunch. There was only 4 other people in the restaurant at the time. It was a Sunday and you can get a free kids meal with an adult meal purchased. I got the 2 meat platter with 1 side, a slice of the cornbread and 2 kids meals. They guy behind the counter ended up giving me the cornbread and both kids meals for free. Jackpot! I don't know if he was just being nice since not many customers were there or if he was flirting, but I didn't care. I'll never turn down free food. The food was good and the girls liked it too. As for the cornbread that no one seems to like, I think it's amazing. But, I'm a sweet cornbread kind of gal. In the south they like their cornbread without sugar. Not me, I like for it to be sweet like a cake. It's a perfect ending to a salty & spicy BBQ meal. When we were ready to leave, I began picking up our trays to put away and one of the workers took them out of my hands and said he'd clean everything up for us. This probably wouldn't be the case if it were busy, but I appreciated it. So, it might not be the best BBQ around, but when I'm in the area, I can count on a good meal at The Rub. read more

My husband and I ate in the restaurant once, and I also ordered from the catering menu to feed a large group of people in my home. Here are the highlights - from the catering menu, we ordered the hash casserole that was supposed to feed 15+ people, and it definitely did that! People went back for second and even third helpings, and we still have leftovers. It was tasty and a unique twist on barbeque. If you want the best BBQ in KC, go somewhere else. But if you want something a little different, give the hash bowl a try. We also ordered 1/2 gallon sides of beans and cheesy corn casserole, and the people we served in our home were big fans. I liked both of these versions from The Rub better than some other well-known restaurants in town. Best of all, we fed all these people without breaking the bank. I think 2.5 stars are more appropriate, but I can't give that so I rounded up. This place is an interesting concept, and overall it tastes pretty good, but the meat itself is kind of lacking. The pulled pork I had in my "Hillbilly Bowl" was decent, but nothing spectacular. The cornbread and beans were both pretty good, though, making the overall flavor of the bowl pretty decent. My wife got another bowl (the name escapes me) that had a variety of meats in it. The sausage was good, but the burnt ends were nowhere near "burnt." I'd go back, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do so. As others have said, this place is basically Chipotle for BBQ. My husband and I went here last week super hopeful of a cheaper bbq find close to home. We were extremely disappointed. Both of our meats (we had an assortment of brisket, burnt ends, and pulled pork) were cold and the brisket was more fat then meat. We ordered potatoes as a side and they were burnt, crunchy, and also cold. Extremely disappointed given it was a Friday night at 7:00 so there was no excuse for the food not being warm. I forget the name of the "bowl" I ordered, but it had cheesy corn and baked beans on the bottom, pulled pork, burnt ends, and sausage in the middle, and onion straws on top. Not a great experience. We ordered the family meal to go. It comes with your choice of 2 pounds of meat and 2 sides and 8 buns. The potato salad and the cheesy corn tasted great. We chose the burnt ends for the meat. I guess you can call it meat.....there was so much fat. I bet we threw away over a pound and a half of it. The sandwiches my wife and I made for the kids took forever. There was so much fat we had to pick off what meat we could salvage....it wasn't much. My first trip to The Rub was last night with the family. We decided to mix things up and get out of our normal order to experience a variety of dishes. My wife had the Hash Bowl (cornbread, pulled pork, baked beans and onion straws) and I had a rib platter. The Hash Bowl is such a unique BBQ dish, not one that you'll find anywhere else that I know of. Great combination of flavors, good price and a TON of food. The rib platter had a 1/2 rack and two sides. Beans and fries for me. The beans are amazing, very unique with a sweet but savory flavor. Excellent. My ribs had an excellent dry rub on them (what would you expect from The Rub??). Homemade fries were good as well. I ate it all but BARELY. Total bill for a family of 4 was $28...did I mention that kids eat free every day with an adult meal purchase! As cheap as our local favorite Mexican restaurant and I had ribs. Fun atmosphere inside, good location. For reference, I love Danny Edwards Blvd BBQ ("Eat it and Beat It") and also loved The Rub. We have found our new favorite BBQ place in KC!!! I had the Brisket Haystack sandwich. The meat was very tender and had a great-not overpowering smoky flavor. I LOVED the onion straws!!! My spouse had The Hillbilly Bowl with pulled pork. The pulled pork was wonderful!! Both the kids had chicken sandwiches and fries. The size was perfect for them. I tried the chicken, and I was impressed with the little spicy kick. Oh, and the kids eat for FREE, every day of the week!!! Can't beat that!!
