All you need to know is if you cannot smell smoke, its not a smoke house. This is a very simple setup. It reminds me of a lunch line in catholic school. Was ok. Think Chipotle with BBQ. Tried to engage me in small talk and established we were from out of town and then proceeded to overcharge as if I couldn't read the sign aka menu. For that I am docking a star. Corrected but I don't need the hassle. Plan on $12 pp given the $2.75 soda charges. Used cheap styrofoam cups which we all know are not only terrible for the environment but make the soda flat. Everything was greasy: tables, chairs, flatware, etc. tacos were really good. First time at THE RUB and I'm impressed. It's a difficult task to evaluate BBQ in and around KC because frankly, there's just so many and none of them are actually bad. That said, THE RUB featured lean meats, great sauce and friendly personnel. I love the fact that they offer Diet Mountain Dew as well as the usual diet cola drinks... there's a lot of us out there trying to watch our sugar intake and it's nice to have 3 sugar free soda choices... Diet Pepsi, Diet Dr. Pepper and Diet Dew! Oh, they also offer a delicious cake-like sweet corn bread (possibly as much sugar as a regular soda lol), but it's awesome as well as is the Cheesy Corn. I've only ever had their hash-like offering (at catered events) which consists of hashbrown style potato cubes, assorted chunks of smoked meats, onion straws and grilled onions all dumped into to one dish. It's fantastic. Sauce it and go face down on your plate. read more

Good BBQ, esp the ribs. Different than Jack Stack and Joe's. A bit more spice and pepper in the sauces, Not as sweet. One of the BBQ joints we rotate through. I've been told by the restaurant manager most of the sides are gluten free, as is the sauce. So far ever dish has been good. Great for takeout. read more

Good BBQ. I had burnt ends and pulled pork which were both pretty good. Sauce is more tangy than sweet which is not my preference but the BBQ didn't require sauce for it to taste good which is a plus in my book. I visited Rub for the first time today and want to go back tomorrow. I got the beef sandwich and thought it was moist, with a nice smoke "ring", and just enough char on the outside to make it very yummy. The bun was soft and fresh. I really like the sauce, as well, it was tangy with lots of good spices and slightly sweet with a kick. If you gave a poor review please go back and try something else. I like trying small food places because variety in barbecue should be welcomed in our town. Some of the big name barbecue places have bad days too. Give it a shot! read more

Ate here for the first time on a business lunch, ended up coming back a week later. I'm always skeptical of BBQ joints outside of the well know places in the market, but I was pleasantly surprised with this place. Great little gimmick with the bbq bowls. I ate the turkey sandwich on both visits and enjoyed it. On the 2nd trip, the fries were lukewarm and chewy, for they had been sitting in the heated bowl. If you are going to make "fresh-cut" fries, then they should be right out of the fryer. The bottom of the bowl is lined with sweet, crumbly cornbread, followed by a layer of smoky bbq beans, meat of your choice, and topped with onion straws. The burnt ends were juicy, tender, bite-size morsels of pure bar-b-qued perfection! Both hot and mild sauce is available; however, I found the bowl to have just the right amount of sauce. $8.99 seemed a bit high for the price of the bowl until I saw the portion sizes - then it all made sense! Ok, I am a KC BBQ fan...some say a "Snob" I had my first experience at The Rub today, for Lunch. I am happy to welcome this new entry to the KC BBQ scene. While my meal included Burnt Ends and Sausage, I sampled the Ribs and the Brisket and was very pleased. The Brisket was not as moist as some in town, but the taste is very good. The Ribs, just meaty and tasty enough without being too greasy (that last bit was for my Doctor's benefit!). The Burnt Ends made my top 5 in town and the Sausage was tasty. Beans...INCREDIBLE. Portions and Pricing -- big portions and fair pricing. A good value. Service was very good. Ambiance-- well, it's not your typical BBQ joint, but then again, it has only been open for a short period. Attention to detail and smells, AWESOME, but I would expect that, knowing that the owner came from the Applebee's Restaurant Chain. That's the good... Now, the NOT-SO-GOOD -- My Advice --Put some spice and body and heat in your sauce. Define yourself in this market. This is KC. Here, we take it for granted that the meat will be good (and yours is better than good) but we like to differentiate our BBQ by the sauce. You won't please everyone, although your Mild and Original sauces are okay for the "supermarket" BBQ folks. Offer something that gives us some kick! Gives us some body! Gives us a good reason to say, "I'm going to 'The Rub'" Meanwhile, when I don't feel like driving to LC's (over by the Stadiums) or to Bryant's, I will order to-go from the Rub, and add my favorite sauce... After reading all of the reviews, we thought we would check it out. The Chipotle-inspired set up with the food exposed to the insects (a fly had a nice dinner on my bun while I waited to be passed down the cafeteria line) was not appetite inspiring. My husband had the pulled pork, cheesy corn and fries while I had the burnt ends and Carolina Slaw. The meats lacked that wonderful smoked flavor I am accustomed to in KC BBQ, and the burnt ends had a LOT of fat and were not "burnt." The fries were boring, unoriginal and just plain not tasty and the slaw had WAY too much liquid. I hoped that maybe the BBQ sauce could help the meat along as the meat lacked any flavor; however, I was sadly disappointed. The sauce paled in comparison to many local BBQ places and almost made the food worse. It's almost as if someone at a backyard BBQ (though I've had better BBQ at one of those) said, "you should open a restaurant" and so the business owners did just that without really investing into quality products. Ok, time for my first review. I have been to over 30 bbq places in KC so when this one popped up, I had to try it! Food: Food and taste come first... Pulled Pork: Had it twice and was kinda dry, stringy with no smoke or seasoning... Beef: Good, nothing wrong with it. Sliced thin like most places with a little bit of fat to it, which to me makes for a good slice of beef, a good meat to fat ratio. I dont like the places that trim off all the fat and leave the beef dry, or have too much on, and ruin it altogether. The Rub is up there on its beef and Ill give it a B. Meatloaf: I was afraid to order this cause I love meatloaf and was araid the smoking process would leave it dry, but it wasnt dry at all! Very moist and served as a good sized hunk on my 3 meat, 3 side plate. Delicious!! and something u wont find around, was my personal favorite meat. Burnt ends: Very good, got some fat to them, but not overly fatty, and not dry either. Exceptional! Sausage: Ok, kinda like the pulled pork. Nothing special... Sides: Fries: Above average fries, but nothing spetacular Cheezy Corn: Good... Seemed they put a lot of black pepper in their recipe. maybe tone down on that, and add some bits of ham instead. Beans: The star side imo! A mixture of different beans including the big butter beans, meat, spices, sugar....very good!! They can be kinda thick in the consistency though. Prices: Very low...I mean 3 meats, 3 sides for 11.99? I hope they know what they are doing on the price point cause with all the food u get, u need 2 to go boxes with this one! Sauce: Ok, another average item. Nothing that will make the place special, but it does the job. The original sauce whch I believe is their spicy sauce does have a kick, but it gives u a head start... Went to the Rub today because I had just noticed it the other day on my way back from Johnnys Saloon on K7/K10 interchange. As I pulled up to the place, it was around 12:45pm or so. Not lunch rush anymore, but would have expected SOME customers. I was the lone person there. The place was very spacious, with about 4-5 TVs with ESPN on. The Staff was helpful enough, not overly friendly, but certainly not rude either. I oredered 2 meats and 2 sides (Burnt Ends and Pulled Pork, with sides of Beans and Cheesy Corn).. As well as an extra rib. It came out to be around $14. The Guy at the register gave me an extra rib, and a drink to go along with the meal, but I don't know if that was part of the deal, or just complimentary. But none the less, it was appreciated. On to the food. First I dug into the pulled pork. It was barely Luke warm, and very dry. I like to try all of my meat first before I bust out BBQ sauce, so I get full flavor of just the meat. The BBQ smoke flavor was there, but the dryness, and lack of freshness really killed it for me. On to the burnt ends. Once again, they were not hot, some of them were so tough it was like chewing on jerky. There were a couple of the larger pieces that had some moisture to them, and they tasted quite good. The Cheesy Corn I really enjoyed, but was very Peppery. I like lots of pepper, but a number of the people I usually dine with are not that fond of it, if you don't like a ton of black pepper on your veggies, you probably will not enjoy the corn. The Beans tasted just like Bushes Baked Beans out of a can. Im used to BBQ joints having some spiced up beans with a bit of smoked meat, and bold flavors to enjoy, but the only thing different about them than Bushes in a can was that they used a few different types of beans. But the flavor was bland and lacking. Lastly, checked out the Ribs. They did not come from the warming pans that the Pulled Pork and Burnt Ends came from, so they were fresh and quite good. They have 2 different BBQ sauces. Neither was spicy in my opinion, but one tasted really sweet, almost similar to Gates sauce (which I don't care for) the other had a bit bolder taste and not as sweet. I preferred that one. All in all, the meal was lack luster. I spent more than I normally would on BBQ because I wanted to check out several things, but for $10 or so, I could have had better BBQ elsewhere. Also, the location is pretty out of the way from the main KC traffic. I think they were hoping for growth and having a prime spot once that side of town becomes more developed, but for me, its a bit out of the way for mediocre at best BBQ. read more

My husband and I dropped bytodayfor the first time. He had the Hillbilly bowl, while I set my sights on a another but just as interesting sounding ditty. Both dishes were equally disappointing. After my first bite, I knew it was a mistake because my sliced beef was plucked from a heating cabinet filled with pre-cut meat wrapped in cellophane . Not only that , ALL silverware in the community utencil trough was dirty... like someone had passed it to the service counter without stopping for a wash first. GREASY! Maybe it was cleaned by the same person in charge of floor duty cuz my shoes kept sticking to it. GAG. Now here's the kicker: I know what BBQ should taste like and how state inspectors grade restaurants. My family has owned BBQ chains from here to Texas for the last 38 years.
