Was realllly in the mood for soup so I came here! I ended up getting the turkey, spinach and cilantro grilled cheese, chicken and rice soup and a watermelon juice. I really love the actual food from Soup Peddler and I do love the idea behind it. A couple of times lately have been a bit frustrating. One time within the last 6 months I had to wait 45 mins past when the order pickup was for. Tonight for the GrubHub order, we waited for over an hour to arrive and then got a cancellation email that it couldn't be fulfilled but it without any details as to why. Its also a bit tricky to order delivery from them because you can't pick or see the soups from GrubHub and have to go to the locations website. So, the food is great, people there are nice, if you order your food there you'll get it in a timely manner, but pickup and delivery can be a crapshoot. read more

The soup peddler turned into an Austin institution decades ago and now they've got a brick and mortar location in the 'burbs. Have they made it or have they sold out? You decide. I didn't come here for the judgement, however, but with the thermostat touching 40' I came here for the soup! People talk as if some of the soup peddler soups are legendary. I don't know about all that but their tomato bisque was definitely legit. It was the right amount of chunky and smooth. Very tomatoey and warming. They also make grilled cheese sandwiches (which to be honest could use a bit more cheese.). They do a great job of accompanying the soups though. Of course I can't speak to every flavor of soup they offer... the clam chowder for instance I don't like at all... but I'm glad they're here and they do what they do pretty well. PS. I think they're packing a lot of ingredients into a small container, so the spinach is getting compressed and gooey. Hopefully next time will be better! First off, I really wanted to love this place- and had heard good things about it. But my experience was subpar. I stopped by to pick up some dinner to take home. I was excited to see gluten free sandwiches on the menu, which is why I had decided to come in the first place! Then, as I order off the menu that's on the wall, I am told they only have GF cheddar sandwiches, which I couldn't eat. So then I just went with a large chicken tortilla soup and a chocolate cherry cookie. The cookie was seriously amazing! Delicious. The soup was "okay"- it didn't have a lot of flavor and wasn't great. I wouldn't have chosen to come there only to order soup. The soup is served with a small amount of cheese (which is fine) and literally 5 chips, which were not that good. I appreciate the all natural ways they cook and source food, but for soup and a cookie, it is more than I'd normally spend. My recommendation would be to at least update the menu on the wall to say that the only option for GF sandwiches is cheddar. I would be willing to come back and try a smoothie but I would not get the chicken tortilla soup again. If they would offer other GF sandwiches, I would definitely try again. read more

I am so happy that North Austin now has a quality juice bar! The Soup Peddler has been around for sometime in South Austin. The south locations have a funky vibe to them. While this location does not have that funky vibe they do serve the same quality juices, smoothies, salads, soups, and sandwiches. Bonus this location also has indoor seating! The decor is minimal and the space clean. They have a variety of soups that change throughout the week. There is a grab and go section stocked with Topo Chico, wraps, salads and bags of soup. I ordered the Flotsam and Jetsam juice, a cup of Asopao de Camarones and a grilled cheddar on sourdough to go for Jesse. The Flotsam and Jetsam juice was delicious. This juice has cucumber, kale, apple which added sweetness, ginger and lemon which offered some zing. The soup was also good. I especially like that they serve soups in several sizes so you are not forced to purchase huge portions. The sandwiches are simple and probably are best when accompanied by soup. Other items I have tried at the south locations that I would recommend are the Love Cleanse juice and the Watermelon Strawberry smoothie. read more

While I visit this spot frequently enough and love their food offerings, I cannot give 5 stars for lack of good consistent service. One of the times, they only offered 3 soups. It was almost noon and the excuse was very poor, so I actually walked back out. Perhaps that day they forgot the business name STARTS with soup! But even that doesn't deter me from coming back. And the reason goes back to the food. Here are a few suggestions that would make this spot 5 star worthy to me: 1) Consistent and pleasant service 2) Always offering at least 5 soups because the name of the business is Soup Peddler! 3) Don't assume everyone who walks in should just know everything about the way things are ran. Inform clients of how things work. Often, most people are not aware of the free bread near the pickup area. I didn't know about this until after my 1st visit when I asked why others had bread. Ever go to a restaurant where you like everything you see on the menu, that you worry you might never be able to decide what to order? I had that experience today. I knew I wanted a juice but the smells coming from the soup pots were so mouthwatering I wanted that too. Then I saw the sandwiches menu and the words 'pesto' and 'peanut butter, banana, and honey' caught my eye. Not together, because that would be gross. But honestly, I wanted all of it. I stuck with juice because I had errands to run and it was the smartest choice for on the go. But what kind of juice? Fruit, smoothie, yogurt fruit smoothie? Why?! For an already indecisive person this sort of menu is just torture. Thankfully the employee behind the counter could see the conflict on my face and managed to help me find what I was looking for. I said I wanted something with carrots and kale, so she suggested the Seven Veggie Army. I got the large (24oz) of that minus beets. I could taste how fresh the vegetables were and could almost feel my body soaking up the health benefits as I drank it. I love juicing, it also does wonders for your skin. Next time I refuse to leave without getting soup and I want to try one of their fruit yogurt smoothies as well. I wish I lived in their delivery range because I would pay to have them bring nutritious food on a regular basis to me in a heartbeat. This restaurant started out in Austin years ago as a sole proprietorship with one guy, a former engineer of sorts, cooking his soup and delivering it to customers on a bicycle. He was inspired to leave his uninspiring highly paid job and make soup. YOU CANNOT GET ANY MORE CLASSIC AUSTIN THAN THAT. My only regret was that I didn't live close enough to be in his customer base. Eventually, he opened a funky little open-air restaurant on South Lamar and added sandwiches and smoothies to the menu. Still really far from me, but doable on occasion. But this! This store up north is right off 183 at Anderson Mill Road, and is all dressed up for church. It looks like a cute little mini-cafe from college days, and has indoor and outdoor seating, while offering the same delicious homemade soups and sandwiches and smoothies as its way cooler cousin down south. It's perfect for a lunch stop during work or a dinner pick up on the way home. I've been there twice in one week for a smoothie and a progressively larger to-go container of Mulligatawny Stew. Officially addicted. The soups aren't generic or boring, and they're all homemade in small batches with fresh ingredients, Austin style. This is like the Franklin BBQ of soups. For me, sandwiches are kind of an afterthought in the presence of these royal soups, but there is a full array of options on the menu. The smoothies are fairly fruity, for the most part, and have the option of various additives for an uncharge. I ordered one with beets and carrots and celery, but most of them don't stray far from apples and bananas berries and maybe a few green items. If you'd like to try making some of these soups yourself, you can buy the cookbook, aptly titled "Slow and Difficult Soups." I'm thinking about it. Tonight was our first visit to Soup Peddler. We ordered to go and waited for our food. Pesto provolone sandwich 2 cheddar sandwiches Pepperoni, marinara, mozzarella sandwich Bone broth Tomato basil 2 strawberry watermelon smoothies 2 First off, the order was 100% correct and the service was phenomenal. Now for the foods.....the sandwiches were all really good. The bread is apparently sourdough but it just tastes like white bread, which is fine. It just didn't have that nice zing good sourdough has but the bread held up well. It was still crunchy by the time we got back home to eat. They we're all good, greasy, grilled cheeses made with bread that didn't get soggy or crumble away. The soups were ok. The bone broth definitely tasted better with salt added, it was rather bland without it. The tomato basil was also ok. It's more like a thinner marinara. It's a bit chunky, not at all creamy, and they use a very licorice tasting basil. All fine, but once again it was way better with some parmesan added. The smoothies were good and so were the juices. Overall we really enjoyed everything but felt it was quite expensive for what it was, which is why I knocked a star. Our total was a little over $47, but my kids tore up their sandwiches and shared the soup with us and drank every drop of their smoothies. We were all happy and full so it worked out. I would definitely recommend it and I do so appreciate that they have 8oz sized glasses for smoothies and juices, which were perfect for my kids. I AM IN LOVE!! I just moved up north and found this cute little spot! Seriously, the BEST smoothies you will find in town!! It even comes with a great price tag! The smoothies and juices are all so unique with a large variety to choose from. This place also serves up some yummy soup and sandwiches. I am vegetarian and pleased to see they have plenty of food options as well. They have an awesome condiments bar as well. YES! Finally, we get access to the mighty Soup Peddler up on the North side of town. I love this place. This particular location is small, but has plenty of seating. The juices are fresh, the soup is delicious and the service is great. I'll be stopping by daily. *Edit* I'm really pleased to see that this location has been flourishing. Finally gave this place a try after many years of having heard the hype. Placed order 10 am for some poblano corn something or other offering which sounded really good. Excitement all day as we counted down to the moment we'd finally get to experience this other-worldly culinary treat. One hour before pickup, we're unapologetically informed they're "out" of the one thing we ordered, and asked "what other soup we'd like to substitute". Well, we'd committed to this as our dinner and didn't want to hunt something else down at last minute, so we considered our limited options for a substitution, and reluctantly decided upon chicken noodle soup and a couple of grilled cheese sandwiches. The soup sucked. I say this with zero facetiousness - I would have preferred Campbell's Chunky Soup. Mealy and devoid of flavor; an uninspired mush of stuff you'd expect perhaps at Luby's, or prison. Not one person in family enjoyed it. Let me close with a simple and perhaps obvious suggestion - if a customer places an order early in the day for a specific offering, that should not be interpreted as "I'd really like to have some if by chance you happen to have any left over at the end of the day". It should be treated as a reservation, as it would be at literally any other business. In the words of Jerry Seinfeld.... It's soup. It's not supposed to be a big deal. We're not living in an episode of Seinfeld. It's never been a food item that's nearly brought me to tears. Yet, here I am. I had the German Cabbage Soup for lunch. The stink of it was that I had to wait to eat it because when I walked away with my 12 ounce cup, it might as well have been molten lava in my hand. When I was able to finally sit down and enjoy my soup, which came with a slice of bread, I was taken back in time, to when I was living in Germany. They hit the nail right on the head. I'm not sure how this impressed me more than any soup I ate in Germany, but they did. Maybe it's the absence that made me fonder. The flavor in this soup was plentiful. The cabbage, the kielbasa, the pepper, the potato, which added to the soup's thickness. All good things. Two hours later, I went back to get some to take home for dinner. I also picked up some Pretentious Chicken Salad. I think the pretension was in thinking that it was pretentious. Perhaps if they'd added dried cranberries or diced apples, but chopped walnuts do not a pretentious chicken salad make. Regardless, it was quite tasty and satisfying.
