Due to covid - 19 I have been ordering from DoorDash, UberEats, and Grubhub. I had ordered The Nasty Biscuit without the gravy. I also had ordered the Buttermilk pancakes. The nasty biscuit was good, although it was a little dry. It consist of a giant biscuit cut in half and in the middle it has scrambled egg with cheese, fried chicken, and hash browns. They usually serve it with gravy. The gravy has huge chunks of pork sausage which I don't eat. Buttermilk pancake stack was not that good. It could have been better. Next time I do want to try the Nasty skillet and maybe a different type of pancake. read more

You really can't go wrong with the food, but service can be spotty. Luckily, even on what appear to be the busiest days, you hopefully won't wait too long to be seated. We've come at prime brunching times and not waited longer than 30 minutes for a table. I kept putting off coming here since I still associated this place with the former. I assumed it was a dive, so I'd just drive on by. But my friend set me straight and told me I had to give them a try. I made my husband check it out first and he raved about it, so I figured it was worth shot. I've been here a couple times and never leave hungry. I'm not shocked by the prices either. You pay a bit, but you get a huge portion and each time I've left with leftovers for days. I highly recommend The Nasty Biscuit, Mac & Cheese, and the George's Chix & Bacon Waffle. Anything with their Country Gravy is gonna be good. We found their Crepes to be just OK, though. Sometimes service is slow and you'll wait a bit, but it's expected at a happening breakfast joint. I'd personally rather be mostly left alone and given an accurate order than fawned over and have all kinds of issues. After my wife wanted to try this spot for a while, we finally had the chance to give it a shot yesterday. We invited some friends with us, altogether it was 6 of us. Came here Sunday around 11, it was crowded due to the late breakfast-early lunch crowd. We were told a 35 min wait but realistically waited close to an hour. They really need to catch up and hop on no-wait or open table like everybody else. After finally being seated, we ordered but experienced some service hiccups. The waitress was very lackadaisical. I ordered a Louisiana omelet & one of my friends did a make your own omelet. Well she mixed ours up & discovered it after I started eating his so had to get him a new one. One of my other friends who only got ham & eggs took much longer for hers to come out than the rest of ours. Then, I ordered Greek toast with my omelet but was given wheat toast. Therefore, they lost 2 stars on service. So finally, the food. The Louisiana skillet was... good. Not amazing, but good. Not amazing enough to overlook poor service or run & tell my momma about but good enough to fit the bill. The homemade signature biscuit in my opinion was dry & slightly overcooked. We were told the wait was 30 mins, but were seated in 15 which was nice. I ordered the country fried chicken skillet and made a couple meals out of the order for my kids as well. You can upgrade the side of pancakes to one of their signature pancake flavors for $3, so we did that and chose the s'mores for my little sugar loving child. Also asked them to put the eggs on the side, and made that my toddlers breakfast of scrambled eggs. The skillet has hash browns, green peppers & onions and minimal bacon bits topped fried chicken smothered in country gravy, with a homemade biscuit on the side. Great portion, even with my giving away the pancakes and eggs to the kiddos. Was expecting the country fried chicken to have a thicker, crispier batter but it was still tasty. The menu has lots of options, that I'd like to come back to try. Ambiance is cool, and food was good. In fact, this will be my new go to breakfast in Chicago area even though it is 1/2 hour from my house. Update to my original review of Southern Cafe located in Roselle... I'm upping the ante from 4 to 5 stars! They've earned it. Everything about my visit here yesterday was as close to perfect as any restaurant can hope to achieve considering food, service and price. Let's cover price first and get that out of the way. Look, if you're going to pay $14 for breakfast/lunch + coffee, tax and tip, it better be top notch. Know that going in. Expect top notch in every category here and if something's not right, they'll fix it pronto. Ok Yelp says I'm on a roll, so I'll expound on my second visit here within a month and, what I'm sure will be many future visits. Talking service now. It's attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. What more could you ask for? From the hostess greeting, to our server as well as the bus service, all were performing their duties with a smile on a busy Tuesday mid-morning at the restaurant. That's of note too; the fact that the place was in between breakfast and lunch hours, but still humming. I take that as a sign people happy to return to a place of business they love. The food choices here are amazing. The abundance! I'll say this: if let's say you stopped in for lunch at noon and ordered an entree such as THE NASTY BISQUIT which is what I had this time. And, let's say you went all-in and consumed the entire behemoth plate. I'll wager you wouldn't be really hungry until 24 hours later. I understand now why they only have breakfast and lunch hours. Used to be one of my favorite breakfast places until I found out how poorly they treat their employees. We received rude treatment by the owner and then mentioned it to the waitress who explained some other facts about the owner. DO NOT EAT HERE! Owner is nasty to the employees and doesn't care about anything but making money. I don't even want to repeat some of the things I was told. But I will never step foot in here again. Great breakfast place with a huge menu containing lots of interesting choices - large variety of entrees and drinks with a southern flair that ranges from spicy Cajun to sweet peach cobbler. Decor is modern southern country - only recommendation for improvement there is some sort of fabric sound panels to help cushion the noise since it can get hard to hear when it's busy. Love that you can walk in and order a coffee to go (location is right off of Roselle Rd and the Elgin OHare, so could be on your way to work!) - they also have homemade jams and pancake mix you can purchase- how cool is that?! Love this place and can't wait to visit again! We had a few items for improvement in a couple things we got, but really just tweaks not major overhauls. The ratio of topping to French toast was a bit off in the apple cobbler French toast dish. The Willy Wonka frappuccino had a bit too much toffee in it. Met up my girls for a Sunday breakfast and the restaurant was super busy when we arrived a little after 9. We chose to wait outside in the back where they have an outdoor patio and we only waited about 25 minutes before our table was ready. There are plenty of different options on the menu that caught my eye, but since it was my first time I had to try their famous Nasty Biscuit. It was a giant biscuit that had a nice crusty layer on the outside and was fluffy on the inside, it was placed on top of a bed of hashbrowns, eggs and crispy fried chicken all smothered with country gravy.... Soooo Yummy! I also tasted the Banana Crunch Pancakes and Louisana Skillet which also were super huge and delicious... I dont think you could go wrong with anything you ordered here. I did take off one star for service. Our waitress wasn't very personable, you could tell she just wanted to turn the table over as fast as possible, seemed annoyed when we asked her recommendation or if they could accommodate putting something on the side rather than in the dish and then later was saying some not very nice things about the bus boy to us which was awkward and made us slightly uncomfortable. However we did get our food quickly and our drinks were refilled promptly so besides the attitude it was decent service. This place has a beautiful/modern interior. It does get jammed packed. I didn't mind waiting for 35 minutes for the 3 of us. The food was amazing! I had their chicken and rice soup, which was very flavorful and creamy. Their fried chicken was super juicy and the skin was nice and crispy. The biscuit was huge! It came with butter and some jam. Let me preface this review by saying my literal favorite meal in the world is chicken and waffles. If I were to be on my death bed, that is what I would request. The Southern Cafe offers a meal called the "Sugar Momma" which is a piece of "Southern-fried chicken" between two waffles with some scrambled eggs and a hot honey sauce. This thing sounds like it's about to be the best piece of culinary art that's ever graced my tongue. I'm excited, really excited. I order it from my sweet waitress and wait for a few minutes.... It arrives GIGANTIC. There's no way someone could actually eat this thing as a sandwich. I don't see an ample amount of hot honey coming off the sandwich but there's a tiny drip. I take my fork and knife and cut into it. There's no crunch or crisp from the waffle as I would expect, nor from the chicken. It seems dense and soggy. I took a bite.... Cold. My $15 sandwich is cold. Cold eggs, lukewarm chicken, room temp waffle. It's hard to say how long this thing has been out. The chicken is as dry as any I've ever had and really not what I would expect from a southern fried chicken. How can something be soggy and dry? The eggs, well they were cold. Cold eggs aren't exactly appetizing. The waffle tasted like it came out of a package, then I saw several in what looked to be a warming oven.... Sure enough, packaged. The hash browns, even cold, were pretty dang good. I doubt I'll be back. read more

I ate lunch here with a group of ladies last Wednesday at noon. The group size was six and there was no trouble seating us even though the place was quite busy. The usual group size is 10 and I think that would still not have been a problem. That's good, because Southern Cafe does not take reservations. I can understand that as the place is only open for breakfast and lunch. I was surprised by how busy it was because the location isn't near an office park or a shopping center. For retired people like us the location, just off the Roselle Rd. exit at the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway, is great. Parking is ample and so is the seating. Outdoor seating is available. I was surprised that nobody was using it as the day was lovely. Perhaps it is only opened to handle overflow. Many breakfast/lunch places have limited menus. That is not the case here! The menu is extensive, varied and interesting. There is a large selection of breakfast items - everything you can do to an egg or pancake batter. Plus there are plenty of meats. And there was a sizeable number of sandwiches, wraps and salads to choose from. If you can't find something of this menu that suits then you are a hopeless case! I had the Southern Omelet. I think it was a 3-egg Omelet. But it came so stuffed with bacon, sausage and ham that it ate like five eggs. And it came with the hugest side of Hash browns I have ever seen (I could have chosen grits instead - next time) ! Plus a choice of pancakes or toast. I chose the pancakes because I wanted to try them. It was a short stack just like everywhere else, but both cakes were the size of my head! It is a rare restaurant meal that is so large I can't finish it at the table. But this serving defeated me. The portions of our entire party's meals were very large. Be prepared to take home leftovers. Not only were the portions large, but the food was spectacular! When we drove within view of the parking lot, we knew we were in for a treat because it was PACKED! We worried that with such a packed parking lot we would be waiting for over an hour for a table, but we were pleasantly surprised to be given a wait time of 35 minutes. Biscuits are served with apple butter, jam, and heavenly honey butter (seriously, it's the best!). They were hot and fresh and quite tasty. I'm super picky with my biscuits because it's my favorite breakfast item to make at home so I was pleased that they were so good. When we finished the biscuits (which we shouldn't have because they were so huge), our meals were brought out. The pancakes were so light and fluffy. The texture was like eating cake, but the taste was like pancakes. Seriously the best pancakes I've ever had. I loved the apple butter but wasn't a huge fan of the flavoring of the sautéed apples. They just didn't do anything for me personally. I have to say though that my husband's grits stole the show! The creole sauce was incredibly good! Enough spice to taste it but not so much spice that you feel like your face is on fire. It was a perfect bowl of comfort. It's a very popular brunch place in the area. If you go during the weekends atleast expect a good 30 minutes wait! The waitress was very friendly and hospitable. She promptly got us our water and helped us through the menu. The nasty biscuit is just really chicken, egg, gravy, biscuit. The same with the skillet except you add some green peppers and more hash browns to it. The taste of the food is nothing outstanding but about average southern breakfast food. The pancakes were very good, fluffy, flavourful. Don't get me wrong the food is well made, large portions etc. but it gets redundant after one point. Very cute gem in Roselle. This town needed a cute place like this. The decor is very reminiscent of Magnolia Table in Waco, TX. The portions are large and the menu has so many options! New breakfast/brunch place that opened up in Roselle close to 390 highway. Huge and homey interior. They have another location in Crest Hill, IL but I'm glad they opened up an expansion here. They have an extensive menu but they're known for their biscuits. I ended up getting the Nasty Biscuit and it was phenomenal. Huge serving for the price. The Nasty Biscuit is a combination of gravy, biscuit, hash browns, fried chicken, and southern magic. The building is an old bar so it is a decent size, even though the parking lot looked full there were tables available. The inside is nice alot of communal takes. The menu is is large and has so much that you will want to try...next time. it's hard to decide. I settled on the Fried Chicken biscuit with sausage gravy,eggs and of course Hashbrowns...I judge ALL breakfast restaurants on their hash browns. The hash browns were well browned and plentiful, no complaints. The chicken was perfectly cooked tender and juicy, often breakfast chicken is not fresh as it takes time to cook and it ends up sitting around, this was very good. Their gravy was also excellent, worth coming back to try on its own, the biscuit was huge and wonderful. Next time I will have to start with their basket of biscuits to get a more true experence. The only complaint was the eggs were cold, perfectly cooked but cold. I am not one to complain , when mixed with the hot gravy it was fine. Not sure how cold eggs were perfectly cooked but they pulled it off. My wife got the Carolina Benny - with fried green tomatoes, guac, bacon and remoulade, it was outstanding.
