Definitely not the spot we had anticipated...we decided to stop in for a few apps and drinks as one stop along our evening. It was myself, my 11 year old daughter and my parents (who ate locals). Walking in...it was dark and very dated. The art on the walls though was very interesting! We were seated immediately, though it was a Tuesday night so we didn't anticipate we would have a problem anyway. The table setup was nice but the slippery velvet chair covers were annoying and dated. Our waitress was less than personable but the bartender came a few times and said she was married to the chef, so I am guessing they were the owners? She was lovely. We had already selected our items when were told that there would be a $10 cover for any person not ordering 2 apps or an entree due to them having a guitarist playing. What? That was absolutely absurd! It's a restaurant not a bar. And no one was coming to hear him sing...no matter how quiet and soothing his music was. There should be a sign on the door to allow you the option of not going in that night. But seeing as we were already seated and ordered our wine...we were stuck. So we ordered the required amount. Never in my life or all my world travels have I ever been told I had to pay a cover at a restaurant or order items to cover for a no name nothing musician. If I'm going to location to hear a musician, that's one thing. This was totally different. We just upped our order...2 orders of the escargot and 2 of the seared tuna. Let me preface by saying....we are foodies. We travel a lot and love great and unique food. I am also gluten free and dairy free (due to lingering health issues following chemotherapy). So i was VERY excited to try this spot since their menu accommodated much of that! The escargot was awful. Chewy and salty and served with sweet potato rounds. Weird and texturally displeasing. However, the tuna with the seaweed salad was excellent! Only criticism is that it is served on these beautiful glass pedestals...which were warm. Would have been much nicer if they were chilled. Our wine selection was very good. For dinner we shared the pad Thai special and the paella special. Both came with ample seafood and the sauce for the paella wasn't overly powerful in spice so we all enjoyed it as well as the paella. The rice was very good on the paella and cooked well. Overall the food was well prepared, came out hot and everyone enjoyed it. However, it would never be a place I would plan to return. The ambiance is overwhelmingly dark, we were actually sun struck when we left and didn't realize it was still daylight. And the musician, while lovely background music, wasn't worth a cover and should never have been a patron requirement to pay for....don't have music. No one would have minded. It's nice to see that they accommodate so many allergies and food choices...but it's nothing that we couldn't get at many other local restaurants with a far more pleasant atmosphere and with the option of being able to choose what we want and not being forced to order more to accommodate a cover charge. Come for the art, not the food. Okay, in fairness, there's nothing wrong with the food. I was just a little let down based on the build up of "creative", "different" and "artistic" Let me start by saying the service really was excellent - professional, friendly and the right level of "touch". The ambiance was also good. I've seen some reviews complaining about the artwork - okay, if your bothered by nudity, than your not going to like it - but it's interesting and very well executed. The paintings are done by one of the owners. It's a great concept actually, a husband and wife, one who loves food, one who loves paintings bringing their passions together in one place. There was live music on the night that we dined which normally we wouldn't care for while eating good food, however it wasn't intrusive. As I said up front, there was nothing wrong with the food, I was just hoping for more creative and lighter. My wife and I will fully acknowledge being spoiled by *great* restaurants around the world so sometimes it is hard to be inspired. The dishes were all conceived with thought in them, however in their execution, the flavors tended to blend in a way that made them average instead of standing out. The dishes we ate had lost the subtlety that they were probably conceived with. Either there now being executed to serve the palate of the regular Hilton Head demographic or they need practice and tweeking. I had the duck apetizer - best course of the dinner, which was actually promising. I then had the lamb rack with risotto. Execution fell down here. The lamb was cooked perfectly however the risotto lacked any subtlety, had too much of the wrong cheese and seasoning and didn't support or strengthen the lamb. My wife had a salad which was overdressed and way to "oniony" and the scallops, which unfortunately came with the same risotto. The risotto didn't work with the lamb and REALLY didn't work with the scallops. We didn't have dessert - just weren't inspired too. I guess I'd finalize by saying again the service and ambiance were great and there was nothing wrong with the food, it just dissapointed. read more

Really enjoyed both of the Chef's specials. One was a Chef's selection including lamb chops with a reduction sauce, grouper with crab cover, and a petite filet with goat cheese. We had a party of seven. We had a couple of nice bottles of wine recommended by Chef Paul from Sardinia, name escapes me. Our second entree from special was flounder on top of risotto and little neck clams. A sort of paella.... 2 others of the party had the same dishes, rounded out with a full order of the lamb chops, and their signature salad, with 4 servings of Cajun gumbo, an Ahi Tuna appetizer, and the red pepper humus. Had a lovely dinner here on a Saturday night. The service was flawless. Waitstaff give excellent suggestions on apps, entries, dessert and wine. We started with a Raspberry Cosmo and a very generous pour of Knob Creek. Shared the crab-onion bisque & Lobster Spring roll appetizer. Dinner was the Duck Breast and Australian Lamb Rack "Rogan Josh". The food was delicious. Portions were ample so there was a small amount to take home. One of our waiters suggested a Malbec to compliment our dinners and it paired exceptionally. Dessert was a shared Chocolate Banana bread pudding. Again, a large portion that was warm underneath with delicious ice cream on top. There was a man singing & playing guitar that added to our experience. He played requests from the diners. Our billed was just north of $200 before tip. Expensive but well worth it for a special night. We will come back!! read more

So, I just left and feel like I should write a review while things are fresh in my head. Service was outstanding. Seriously, they get service right. Atmosphere was cozy and dark. The building is old so I thought they did well with what they have there. Food was OK. I ordered the filet at a medium rare temp and it came out medium. I didn't say anything 'cause it wasn't a huge deal to me. I got the banana bread pudding which would have been perfect if it was served warm. It came a la mode and a warmed dessert would have made it perfect. The only thing I didn't like was the music. It was a little geriatric. Lots of Neil Diamond, James Taylor and the like. Granted even though we are in our 40's we were the youngest patrons there so they may cater to the older crowd. read more

Took a chance on going out during the Coronavirus quarantine and stumbled on The Studio. They had a special going on...BOGO. My husband and I got the Filet Mignon with broccolini and whipped potatoes and Studio salad. Everything was excellent and cooked to perfection. I was surprised as it was carry out but it was good. Absolutely incredible experience! Cannot say enough good things. We were running late because of traffic and when we called to let them know they kindly pushed our reservation back for us. The staff were attentive without being over bearing, and were so kind! The food was amazing and the atmosphere is lovely. We had a birthday in our party, my mothers, and they immediately asked me upon arrival who's birthday it was, wished her a happy birthday, and at the end of the dinner brought out her dessert with a candle and sang for her. All of our food was truly incredible and we really appreciated the plethora of vegan options. We tried a wide variety of menu items and I really enjoyed the vegan items I had, and I know everyone else loved their non-vegan apps, meals and desserts! It can be so hard finding good quality, high-end, vegan friendly places on vacation and this really hit the spot. They even made me a vegan espresso martini, which was so good! As the only vegan in my group I was glad to have a place that was good for all of us and that had amazing vegan options that my family was willing to try out and share with me. I dined at this amazing restaurant June 16, 2019 for Father's Day. The restaurant has several vegetarian and vegan options as well as options for the non vegetarian/vegan. We were greeted by the co-owner who waited on our table. The food is well crafted and very tasty. The portions are very filling. I had the vegetarian/vegan Caribbean Coconut Mixed Vegetable Gnocchi which was enough to share and I am a big eater. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

I was very much underwhelmed. Came here for what I thought would be a gourmet five-star vegan meal based on their prices and their refusal to fulfill a carry out order. Ordered the Hippie Loaf along with the spinach salad. It was just okay, above tolerable. The mac wasn't anything special, nor was the loaf. The flavor of the gravy was slightly off. Perhaps I should've ordered differently...a friend had suggested the plantain gnocchi. I don't think I'll be back for a second attempt anyway. I've had far better vegan meals for half the cost elsewhere, including on Hilton Head. I left two stars instead of 1 because I do appreciate the fact that they even offer vegan options. read more

Traveling from Maryland, we make it a point to stop in Hilton Head a couple times a year...the vibe of the whole island is just so relaxed, natural, and enjoyable. The best part about Hilton Head is that you feel like you're in such a natural setting, yet are surrounded by numerous great restaurants...the perfect combination of low-key relaxation and big city dining! Among the highlights is our now traditional (second year in a row) Easter dinner at The Studio. Paul, Lunonia, and staff are always welcoming and the food continues to impress. To this day, I tell anyone who sits still long enough about the fantastic antelope chop I had here a few years ago! This is truly one of the most unique restaurants I visit thanks to Paul's adventurous spirit in the kitchen and Lunonia's beautiful and thought provoking paintings throughout the dining room. Next time you're in Hilton Head, forget the tourist traps and head to this quaint and absolutely unique fine dining restaurant...you won't be disappointed. read more

This review would be very positive except for a parting shot that a thoughtless waiter delivered at the end of our meal at The Studio. First, the good parts. My wife and I were doing our annual week in Hilton Head. We scour the local media and various guides for restaurant suggestions and read some positive things about The Studio. We then saw a coupon in the Island Packet which prompted us to make a reservation (my wife is in advertising and likes to show businesses that their advertising works). The restaurant said the only available opening was at 5:30 or 8:30 so we took the earlier time. Our party of three even got to the restaurant fifteen minutes early to have a drink, but the doors were still locked. We strolled around, came back at 5:25 and sat down. Our waiter was very nice, very informative and very professional. He said that a musician would be playing in about an hour and that he was from our hometown of Pittsburgh. Naturally, we were curious to see him. We had a great meal and a nice wine (though not the wine that the waiter recommended and that we ordered since they were out of it--no biggie), opted not to have dessert and then ordered an after-dinner coffee. It was more than an hour since we arrived and I could see the musician padding about the room since the dining area is very small. We wanted to see the musician do a song or two, which I figured we'd watch over coffee. Since it was a Friday night I asked another server (not ours) if there was anyone waiting for our table. She said that there was a party sitting at the bar. At this point we would have gladly exchanged places, maybe had an after-dinner drink and watched a song or two. The server then went on to say that 'frankly' it was our prerogative to sit as long as we wanted--which we weren't planning to do. And then: 'You want me to be honest?' I haven't started (the musician) yet so that you'll leave.' My face dropped. We had gone from guests to pariahs. At least one other table heard the server blame the musician's late start on us. Believe me, I'm not being overly sensitive. Between the three people in our party we had two salads, two salmon and one grouper, no dessert and one coffee. If a small restaurant can't turn over an uncomplicated three-top in the requisite time then they have extreme time management issues. Don't blame the patrons. We left the restaurant somewhat shaken. As much as I'd like to recommend The Studio based on the pleasant meal we had, I'm aware that part of the premium price we paid is because of the intimate, artistic experience they promise. To have the veneer ripped off as the server bluntly explained that our time was up leads me to conclude that commerce trumps art at The Studio. read more

It's a winner. Been a patron for over 15 yrs. Menu as evolved. Ambiance, service and food never disappoint. I especially appreciate the fact they embrace their mission. Vegan options and great other choices for the rest of us. Not afraid to use spices. Thank You. I appreciate the fact that they are not trying to cater to those who fear flavor. I did go vegan with my entrée. the mushroom crepe was outstanding. My wife's scallops were perfect, not to be overshadow bt the ravioli adorning her plate. Son's grouper was another winner. Easy to order a bottle of house sauvignon blanc that was crisp and clean without the intimidation of a pretentious and voluminous wine list. Appetizers should not be missed. The buffalo cauliflower will make you question your carnivore habits. The escargot. Well, you won't find it served this way at any other restaurant..you have to try it to know..if you're a snail person. We really wanted to love The Studio but unfortunately our experience didn't live up to expectations. The interior of the restaurant is amazing. Some of the art was quite interesting. We appreciated the live music (a nice gentleman was playing guitar) but the song selection was a bit haphazard and a bit loud...which made conversation difficult. Our server was a bit short tempered, bordering on rude. That was a shock considering we're spending four hundred on a dinner for six people. Bread was delicious; warm sourdough with butter. Studio salads were very good but one person tried the spinach salad and didn't like it. On to the main course...stick to their fish. I had the new york while my dad had the fillet. Honestly, the sides were better than the steak. They were cooked well, but the seasoning/flavor was just so blah that we were expecting more. The truffled mac & cheese was phenomenal; do ask for that. All-in-all, an interesting experience and worth trying. Before The Studio we ate at Michael Anthony's, and the service there was top-notch. My boyfriend and I were out celebrating my birthday and The Studio provided us with not only the most delicious meal, but also great service and a beautiful atmosphere. The vegan plantain gnocchi was incredibly rich and delicious and my boyfriend loved his lobster and steak. Oh hidden gems, I love you so! From the moment I opened the menu, I knew I had to come back. I wanted to try nearly everything. Wait, back up - this is an "artistic dining experience" - not only is there fabulous live music, but there's also an artist - painting in the main dining room. The entire restaurant is canvassed with original works of art - most from local artists, I presume. The atmosphere is unique and extremely welcoming. Back to the food. The waiter was exceptional - explaining the evening's specials like only a story-teller could. Someone seriously found their calling! He created a great experience - which is often overlooked by waitstaff, in my opinion. I remembered the details of nearly every special beause of how they were presented to us - "jazzed up with...", "flown in yesterday..." - good stuff! Now it was decision time. My only question was, "Are you open tomorrow? Because I already have to come back!" Both of us opted for 'The Studio' salad - spring greens with Granny Smith apples, toasted almonds, gorgonzola, tomatoes & a shallot vinaigrette - all served in a fried rice basket. Truly too pretty to eat. Well, we got over that fast and dug right in. Perfect. I love it when they don't use half the bottle of dressing,,,in dressing-world a little goes a long way. I went with the Ahi Tuna Tapanade Trio - with Italian, Spanish & Moroccan tapenades served with basil peso pasta. The presentation was gorgeous - everything perfectly aligned - and the majority of the pasta was served in a roasted red pepper. I'm here to say that I'm now a tapanade-aholic! Delish. There wasn't room for dessert, but I overheard "Bread Pudding" and decided if only I could have just one bite, I'd make room. Maybe while the other table isn't looking...just a little, small bite...they'll never notice. I jokingly said this to our server and he magically appeared with a complimentary mini-me Bread Pudding. Ok, whoever decided to make it with croissants - you need a Nobel prize. No, you need three of them. For real. I must add that the glassware was so fun, too. The water/soda glasses were doin' the shoulder lean...and were contoured to your hand. I can't explain it well enough to give it the credit it's due! Very Jetson-ish...or at least how I would imagine the Jetson's glasses to be. Didn't hurt that the restaurant participates in restaurant.com either. Who doesn't love a little discount?! Another excellent meal I came twice during my October visit to Hilton Head. Every meal here is amazing. The soup of the day was Thai curry vegetable which was unbelievably good. my sister had the palette which she said was incredible. The gnocchi is so good don't be afraid that it is vegan. The music is perfect volume all in all it is the best restaurant on Hilton Head Island. I visit this restaurant at least once every time I'm on the island. read more

Very good vegetarian & vegan items, marked clearly on the menu. The dining area is relatively small. The service is good & formal. They had a vegan desert option. We had the soup of the day, pad thai, hummus, plantain gnocchi, & cheesecake. This was too much food as the portions are large. We should have stuck with 2 entries, or 1 entree & 2 other small dishes. The food was good, but not incredible. The prices are of course high. But for a vegetarian or vegan on Hilton Head, this was good. If you dine again within 30 days you can use your receipt for buy one entree get one free. read more

Came here for dinner after looking for a vegetarian friendly restaurant to enjoy with family. Immediately we were welcomed into a room full of art. The service was great and our server was knowledgeable about the food. The menu has a wide variety of options for all vegetarians/vegans and meat eaters. Portions were large, seafood paella probably could have fed two people. The mushroom crepes were excellent especially with the goat cheese. Throughout dinner we enjoyed live music from a local guitarist. After dinner we ordered dessert which was enjoyed by the whole table. Loved our evening at this charming restaurant. We were a couple visiting HH-I for a few days and enjoyed our Thursday night dinner here. Wine s selection was imaginative and extensive. Loved being able to choose between Chablis, Sancerre, Kabinett Riesling and many other excellent whites. The food was modern and well prepared, specifically notable for many Vegan and Vegetarian options which is unusual. I had the Paella which was delicious. Service was attentive but not rushed. One of my least favorite restaurants EVER. Food is mediocre, live music is mediocre, glitzy tableware aims to be modern, but is just annoying. At our table of six we had four dishes: the salmon with a maple glaze which was overly sweet and over -cooked, an indian lamb dish the sauce of which seemed to be tomato sauce with a bit of curry powder mixed in, grouper that was cooked ok, but had a weird flavor, and a steak au poivre that our friend called "creamed meat." Mussels with green curry appetizer...the waiter warned was spicy Good, I like spicy, but there was absolutely no hint of the green curry...just cream and salt.
