I made a reservation here for Mothers Day. I made it through a booking app for 12.45pm. The restaurant called very apologetic to tell me they had messed up, overbooked and had 500 people coming for lunch. Could I come later. I booked at 5pm.. changing around my day. I went with my family at 5pm and there were SO many people, cars, chaos. My daughters went in to say we had arrived and were trying to valet. The restaurant person was so rude and just said they are a small restaurant and they had so many people in front of us and doesn't make any difference that we had booked. I am so furious, drove half an hour there and then another half hour home as will never go back there again. Completely messed up my Mothers Day. I love this place. The food is always excellent. Great waitress and staff who couldn't have been nicer. And how can you beat the vibe, the view and being on the spot where the last scene of Planet From The Apes was filmed? You can't. This is a California highlight at it's best. I had the pleasure to visit Sunset to celebrate Mother's Day with my family our server Diana was amazing she was super attentive with everyone and made sure we had full cups of water and our food was on time amends all the chaos we had a great experience here and honestly it was due to service provide by our server Diana we shared the mains lobster tacos that were out of this world we also shared the the crispy calamari, chips and guacamole my mother had the beet salad she recommended it 10/10 so much so she didn't share we finished off the night with carrot cake which was absolutely delicious. Super glad we decided to stay in the area and have lunch here after the beach. There's ample indoor and outdoor patio seating. There are umbrellas you can self adjust if you prefer to be more shaded outdoors. Of note, outdoor patio ground is covered in sand so if you don't want sand in your shoes and more formal seating, recommend indoor seating. Highly recommend the fish and shrimp tacos. Both were completely stuffed with quality fish fillets and big shrimp. The Parmesan truffle fries were also stellar. Service wasn't great, no one refilled our water and we only saw our waiter once (when he took our order) but it was Memorial Day and they were quite busy. read more

With an honest review, the food was good everything had flavor except the fish on the grilled fish tacos. It did not taste fresh however, the sweet potatoes fries were perfectly cooked crispy on the outside soft on the inside and what made this place spectacular was the view the service was not friendly and did not wait on you much it took me a while just to get my water. Impossible to get into this spot. We had to drive through 20 mins of traffic to realize we had to flip a uturn to then be valeted? If you trust them with your vehicle on such a crazy traffic filled chaotic set up. If you were lucky enough to park your living arrangement on the sand to drip your oil into the ocean slowly and surely, you're in a perfect spot to walk down and enjoy. However, watch out because the volunteer cops are ON IT with the ticketing!!! read more

This is my usual go to restaurant with my family when we're in near by. My family and I came last night and made a reservation. The hostess wasn't very pleasant to her fellow coworker who seemed to be newer. While this is true we were seated even before our reservation and staff was helpful to us when a chair was dirty at our table. We were quickly met with our server who was very sweet and took our drink orders. It took awhile for her to come back and take our food order. Along with this it took forever for the alcoholic drinks to make it to our table...as in they came out right before our food did. The food was amazing as per usual but I just feel as the service was much slower than I had experienced ever before. The whole night my family was looking around wondering if the restaurant was short staffed as every task seemed to take a long time. All in all the food combined with the beautiful view still made this a great night. Lastly I would just say it was frustrating at the end when we were trying to pay our valet with card and gave it to the hostess who took a long time to come back with our card as everyone seemed to be tipping out at the same time. I really did love this place, before tonight. I've eaten here so many times that I've learned the table numbers so I can request a particular table. It's a lovely restaurant located right on Zuma Beach, what could possibly go wrong? A lot. Tonight was my Mom's 83rd birthday and I wanted to make it special so I reserved a table for 5 upstairs and requested table #2 in the corner window because my Mom wanted to see the sunset on the water. She's old, has dementia, and lives in the valley so a sunset on the water is a special event. Plus, she's 83! How many more birthdays will she be lucky enough to have? I called a few days before the reservation to ensure that we would be taken care of and that we had table #2 in the window upstairs "assigned" to us. Wendy who answered the phone, assured me that she put this information in the notes and that table #2 in the corner was assigned to us. It was a special night! So what happened? We arrived in 2 cars, my boyfriend went to check us in and then came out to help my Mom and I out of the car. Once we were all inside and started heading upstairs in the elevator with the hostess we were told that an opportunistic elderly party of 4 claimed they were us, and took our table right before we were to be seated. What a serious downer and how embarrassing as the host of the dinner to be told this in front of our guests. The hostess claimed she knew nothing about anything, she "just got there, there was nothing they could do." So much for the fun celebratory vibe I had planned on having for my Mom's 83rd birthday celebration. We were shown another table far from the window in another room. I was really upset, it was unacceptable and I asked to speak with the manager. Yness, one of the managers, came and spoke to me, once we were seated at another table, coincidentally near the table stealers. The management was not going to ask them to leave and I did not want a scene in front of my Mom and our guests. Yness the manager did offer to buy our first round of drinks but it was not really going to fix the problem. We managed to settle in and tried to enjoy the evening. Although, the waiter was not really a waiter, he was an order taker who seemed hurried. He did not "take" our order, he demanded it. It felt like a dime store diner instead of the Sunset Malibu. Meanwhile, the obnoxious party-of-4 table-stealers laughed when one of my guests choked on their food and had to receive the Heimlich maneuver. Seriously? It was a terrible experience from beginning to end. It was all I could do to NOT scream at this hideous foursome. When the bill came, it was apparent that Yness did not mention to our waiter that the first round of drinks were to be comped. I had to chase him down and get him to adjust the check. Sigh. People took advantage and the restaurant is mismanaged. I feel heartbroken. I really wanted this to be a special night and apparently, the Sunset Malibu cannot be counted on to provide such an event. read more

Love this place and want to continue loving it as a regular, but unfortunately service and food quality have been going downhill. We did not appreciate the rude staff and mediocre food. If it was not for a certain special staff member, we would have been seated. The staff need intensive training to work in a customer-facing environment especially one as beautiful as this place. Please work on the front desk and waiter attitudes and service. Pay and treatment might be important to then trickle down to the customer otherwise you will be losing your regulars, sadly. read more

Came here on the whim while visiting point dume beach. My friend and I were getting hungry & wanted to stay for the sunset. Grabbed a small bite to eat here and was able to enjoy the sunset. My mom and I had a fantastic time at The Sunset Restaurant! The service was very quick and the food was spectacular. We were especially impressed by the Lobster Mac and Cheese, which had a generous serving as lobster and also came in a huge bowl. The mushroom risotto was equally as delicious and creamy. Yummy! Great way to end a day at the beach. The parmesan truffle fries are a MUST, really stinkin good. The lobster roll was pretty good, I think a touch more dressing would have made it great and the clam chowder was good but I've had better. One of my favorite restaurants. All their food and drinks are very good. Lovely views and it's super convenient that you can take a stroll on the beach right after your meal, as the beach is literally a few steps away. Staff is always very friendly and nice. Parking is usually always difficult to find as it is a very popular location, just save yourself the hassle and valet. read more

This spot was super cute ! Not sure how I never visited before. It's perfect for a date night or to celebrate a special occasion. The staff was extremely helpful and welcoming. The ambiance is very live, ask to be seated upstairs for a more intimate experience. Downstairs could be a bit loud with music and the bar but nevertheless a great time. The seating areas alongside the windows have beautiful views of the ocean waves as you eat. The food here is great, I'm definitely going to come back and try some other options. We ordered the free range grilled chicken and the lobster tacos. First of all the tacos were amazing I would come back just for those! The chicken was a good option too, paired well with the sautéed spinach, however I would substitute the potatoes next time. The drinks were good pretty & looked very aesthetically pleasing perfect for that insta story. Parking was easy and valet for about $12. No card or cash or Venmo. There was street parking but I don't think it was legal persay might risk getting a ticket. read more

Super Bowl Sunday for sure. I wanted some margaritas on the rocks with salt, so I headed down to Mijares (Tom Recendez )...pulled into the parking lot and was horrified to see that there was only one other car parked . It was a ghost town. I thought " this is odd, something must be wrong? " Maybe all the patron parking was diverted to the streets or back lot per the patio dining and Covid changes? Ummm, nope! So I walked up to the bar entrance and peered in......not a soul inside the place.Damn. I felt like Charlton Heston in Omega Man'. I was crushed. Being one not to give up so easily...I recollected & re-fortified my spirits . I decided to embark on a spontaneous "drive-walk-eat" adventure. BAM ! I suddenly realized that now I was in Malibu... at The Sunset Grill restaurant ordering a glass of malbec, some appetizers and a grilled skirt steak with fries. Everything now was ..." It's all good". PS: the dessert was vanilla bean ice cream, another pour of malbec and the LA Sunday Times with the sounds of the sea serenading me. And you know what? It was Hella' good !
