I came to The Sunset for dinner with my friend on a Saturday. We didn't have good service because the restaurant was busy. It took probably 25 minutes for us to get a drink after being seated. When I asked the waiter if they had anything local, he said no. We ended up getting the brussel sprouts to start. They were undercooked. The salmon was dry, and the sides it came up with (spinach and cut potatoes) were poorly portioned. Also, unrelated to the service and food at this restaurant, be aware it is incredibly hard to get an Uber or Lyft from The Sunset. Decided to splurge a little and go to this restaurant. I last minute reserved via Open Table on a Sunday evening. The table was not ready when we got there but we got seated 15 minutes after our reserved time. The gentleman who helped us apologized and He was very friendly. Our server greeted us a little while later. She was nice and patient with us, since we had questions about the menu. One thing that I marked off a star for was the lack of service while dining. I wish we got checked on more often rather than after finishing each meal. Ie: checking to see how the food is, if I need another refill on my drink... The food was really good, fries not really that amazing but the calamari, fish tacos and burger were really tasty. The dessert was good as well. Very poor experience here this evening. Made a reservation months ago for indoor seating. It was my father's 75th birthday. Of course they stuck us outside, saying that heat lamps would help. They had no excuse for why they had no indoor seating, just boasted about how busy they are all the time. $200 to sit outside, in the sand, sun in the face and cold, windy weather. On the way out of the restaurant, there were four open tables inside. Really poor management. The server was unhelpful. Food was good, but got cold quickly in the gusty wind. We all felt like stars of the show as he frequently checked in on us to make sure we had everything we needed. His food and drink recommendations were fantastic! And amidst a bit of chaos with the little ones, he was perfectly calm, professional, and just delightful! Wish he could be our server every time!! Everywhere!! Better yet, James should actually run that restaurant!! Then he could teach other servers to be as incredibly amazing as him!! The food is generally tasty but what good is it when the hygiene is so neglected?? I had to return olives for my Martini because there was an obvious hair on it. No apologies or amends offered. When I tried to substitute some potatoes in a quite pricey dish for some butter noodles, the up-charge was $14 --for butter noodles. But nothing compares to the food poisoning suffered here by two different people in our party on two different occasions. Just gross! read more

The Macaroni was really cheesy and delicious, whereas the claim chowder was unusual in a good way. The claim chowder is between the mix of a corn chowder (if you're Asian, you know the kind that you have in Taiwan? those kind) and claim chowder. I would give 3 and half stars to both. My friend got crab egg Benedict. Honestly, the crab is not fresh crab because it tasted very fishy! When seafood taste fishy, you know it's not fresh. I would give that egg benedict a 2 stars. Overall service, it was blah. It took us a LONG LONG time to get everything, and everything was SUPER SLOW! Just blah. Bottom line, unless you're passing by the area and need something to eat, DEFINITELY not worth the drive and DEFINITELY not worth your money. I loved this spot for dinner off the PCH !!! It was very romantic right In front of the ocean and the food was good ! I didn't give a full 5 star because the food wasn't as great as I was expecting yet it tasted decent ! Overall ambience was great ! They checked our temps at arrival for Covid measures and seated us promptly plus also accommodated us despite having no reservation! We had flown in that day from Seattle and had 2 hungry kiddos along with us , there promptness helped a lot with getting us satiated and off on our way home in no time ! This spot is absolutely amazing, I think it ver well may be my new favorite spot in LA. The beach is quiet on weekdays and it's beautiful, last time I was there I spotted dolphins! The food is crazy good, I strongly recommend you try their sweet potato fries as a starter while you look through the menu, the fries are insane, I liked the even more than their regular fries. We ordered the eggs Benedict which we had to send back because the eggs were hard boiled instead of poached, and the hollandaise sauce was super thick. I have multiple perspectives for this place. One is from going to the beach and wanting to grab a bite/drink. Another is from the fact that my best friend got married here in one of the most beautiful weddings ever. In regards to this place being a wedding venue: 5 stars. It's beautiful. It has the prime location of being right on Zuma Beach. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful -- from the planner all the way to the wait staff. In regards to food, I recommend getting the ahi tuna nachos and sun dried tomato pasta. I think that the catered meals are significantly better than the food that is served regularly. As a restaurant, I would say 3 stars. The advantage of being the only place that serves food and alcohol on Zuma Beach is that you are kind of forced to come here. The drinks and food are average. Better than most in Malibu but there's nothing standout about the food. Parking is relatively easy -- if you're going on the right day. I recommend valet if you're coming on a crazy beach day. read more
