Located in Redmond, WA, the Third Place is a full-service Korean restaurant with a full menu of Korean favorites, known for their Korean Fried Chicken (KFC). Our family took advantage of the chicken's ability to maintain their crispiness, even for carry-out. It was OK, though a little confusing. Once we settled on KFC for dinner, our hosts (daughter and son-in-law) suggested carryout from 'The Third Place', which was a little out of the way from where we were. It is the Third restaurant opened by the owner, all Seattle area locations known for her KFC (Shin Sung Korean restaurant with Underground Kitchen and the since closed Yeon's Chicken). The chicken was ordered beforehand, and because it is prepared fresh when ordered, it took a bit of time for the order to be complete. There is a limited amount of sauce choices, so we chose Honey Garlic ($23.99) and the classic Yangnyum ($23.99), both marked as Whole Chicken size. Also a side order of french fries ($7.99) completed the order. The fries were good: nice and hot, heavily battered potatoes, providing a nice amount of carbs to go with the fried chicken. The chicken came with pickled radish (chicken-mu) which for me is a must, and it was good. In terms of the chicken, they were all wings, which isn't what I expected: getting the breast and thigh pieces chopped into bite-size pieces, battered and sauced, is what makes it KFC, vs all wings which is more like a Buffalo wing restaurant. So we still got the expected 14 pieces, but they were all wings (flats and drums). I thought the sauces were fine (intentionally ordered mild), and the chicken did maintain a crunch (though not as shattering as the best we've had). read more

Are there places where you always order the same items every time you go? At The Third Place, I always order Honey Garlic Chicken (Korean Fried Chicken) and Creamy Rice Cake (Tteokbokki). This is my favorite place to get Korean Fried Chicken, specifically the Honey Garlic Chicken. The chicken is always fried to perfection and maintains its crispness even while it's covered with sauce and surviving the drive home (takeout). Honey Garlic is my favorite flavor, but Yangnum is good as well. The Creamy Rice Cake is not your typical spicy, red Teokkbokki (although they do also have that). It's like they put rice cake in alfredo sauce with slices of fish cake and onions. The texture of the rice cake is superb! So tender and chewy. I order takeout via their website and food has always been ready by the specified time. There are street parking and lots available, but at times can be a pain to find an available spot. read more

I had a really fantastic time at the Third Place a couple years ago and decided to pull up once again for some Korean fried chicken on a Friday night at around 7:30 PM. It's located in downtown Redmond, so parking can be a tad difficult, but there's a small lot on the other side of the Half Price Book that is free. Contrary to my last visit where the restaurant had a line out the door, it was almost completely empty this time around and that was the first red flag. My overall impression was nothing tasted quite as it should have and everything was just subpar, not sure that I'll ever be back. Cheese Spicy Rice Cakes (2/5): The rice cakes themselves felt like they were undercooked - they had zero chew and just broke apart when you bit into it. The sauce was really odd: thin, not sweet enough, oddly fishy, and didn't taste like gochujang at all. Would not get this again. Sweet Potato Fries (3/5): The most mid sweet potato fries ever. Needed some more crunch crunch and could do with a little more salt. Yangnyum Fried Chicken (2.75/5): The chicken itself came out super fresh and wasn't too dry. However, once again, the sauce was all wrong. No gochujang flavor again and was super watery, so it just completely sogged up the crunch on the chicken. After looking for a Korean restaurant that had good reviews with both cheesy corn and rice cakes, we came across The Third Place. The restaurant can be easily missed, as it's nestled in a plaza and the signage isn't the best. We walked in around 1pm, and there was only one other table of customers so we were seated immediately. We ordered cheesy corn, spicy rice cakes, the spicy pork lunch box and beef bulgogi lunch box. The two lunch boxes had a variety of different items from broccoli, kimchi, macaroni salad, glass noodle salad, potatoes, a piece of dumpling, a couple orange chicken and a chicken wing in addition to the main dish with rice (all for $18.99), which isn't bad price wise as it was enough for two people or two meals. The corn was extremely disappointing, as the corn was warm and the cheese wasn't melted just a glob of cheese, especially dine it was $12, not worth it in my opinion. The spicy cheesy rice cakes were also disappointing, the texture of the rice cakes were good but it was far from spicy and again the cheese wasn't melted, just a glob. The pictures for both are deceiving. Overall, glad we gave it a try but with the plethora of other Korean restaurants I wouldn't come back here. read more

I decided that tonight I just needed something a little spicy, something tasty, and not too distant from my hotel. Tonight I chose "The Third Place", a small family owned and operated Korean restaurant. I'm glad I did...!!! I ordered the Kimchi Stew, it arrived quickly, boiling hot...and goodness, it was fabulous. Just the right amount of spice, and full of flavor. We decided to try a new Korean place besides Mama's Kitchen in Factoria. This place has good reviews, and I think the good reviews are mainly for the fried chicken. My go to spot for great korean fried chicken and creamy seafood udon. Third time here and it continues to be consistently good. The chicken is large, juicy, crispy, and full of flavor. I've tried most of the flavors - our favorite is probably the honey garlic. But my favorite dish of all time is the creamy udon with seafood. Sooo good and the perfect pairing with the fried chicken! It's great to also bring home as leftovers and heat up and add more to it. Ordered a TON of food here after a very tiring day and it was so satisfying! Although it seemed like there was only one server for the whole place, the food came out pretty quickly. The seafood pancake was very crispy and fresh and so was the fried chicken. My favorite flavor was the honey garlic-- sweet and savory! My lease favorite flavor was original-- a little bland. The tteokbokki was already pretty good, the rice cakes are a bit thicker than i remember but it was still tasty! A couple minor complaints I have are that the squid stirfry (although pretty tasty) and tteokbokki had a lot of filler vegetables (cabbage). Also the corn cheese had an incredibly thick layer of cheese, it was the only thing we didn't finish because the cheese was just too much, the corn was also very sweet, personally too sweet for me. Portions are quite large as we were able to order 1 mixed wings and 2 orders of fries for all 3 of us to share. Overall food came out quickly and was decent but not something I'd go back for. Sadly this place was not as good and a bit underwhelming compared to its sister restaurant, Underground Kitchen. We went around 8:30pm Sunday, and the person working likes to do just the bare minimum - handing out the menu and just sit wherever. I am not really expecting service in these types of places, but this is a prelude to fairly mediocre food as well. We ordered the spicy squid stir fry, some fries, and the half and half (original and yangnyum). The squid is fresh and flavorful, with lots of vegetables. It is a fairly large dish which is meant for sharing, and it is the best dish out of what we ordered. It was a bit on the saltier side and it was fairly saucy, but use your creativity and you can dip the fries and the original chicken into the sauce for a unique combination. The fries were fairly standard and meant as a filler as our meal was more of a snack than an actual dinner. The half and half Korean fried chicken was a huge miss for me. The yangnyum had enough sauce but it still tasted a bit bland. All the sauce did was make the batter soggy, which should not happen for Korean fried chicken - where with sauce, the chicken is still crispy. The sauce tasted more like a sweet and sour - like where is the gochujang? The original tasted better than the yangnyum here with a nice crispiness on the outside, but even then, neither of the original nor the yangnyum was as crispy as the ones I have tried at their sister restaurant. Overall, I am a bit disappointed in my experience, given a stellar dining experience in their sister restaurant. Location - The Third Place is located in downtown redmond near the mall in a cute corner store that you could miss when passing. Parking is a little tricky since it is mostly street parking, but we came for lunch on a weekday so there was plenty of space. The ambiance - the interior is small and kitchy, but comfortable with several tables and a television and bar. Good for small meetups, but perhaps not enough for a large party. It is homey and relatively quiet so would be good for real conversations and first dates (though debatable whether eating fried chicken in front of a first date is a risky choice). The service was decent, it was a bit slow with only one employee and took a while for our check, but we came on a weekday lunch so perhaps the staff was not enough. I would give them the benefit of the doubt for now until we return. The food itself was delish!!! We ordered the spicy pork lunch box which was filled nicely with plenty of food including noodles, fried chicken, dumplings and sides. We also ordered fried chicken and cheese corn. The fried chicken was crispy, hot and well seasoned -YUM! And the cheese corn was delightful in its artery clogging goodness. Pricing - was very reasonable at about 15- 20 per person, but of course it depends what you order :). I would say the lunch box was a great value at around $15. I couldn't delay a visit to The Third Place any longer all thanks to my craving for KFC! Kentucky Fried Chicken? Nope... Korean Fried Chicken! We ordered a couple items for takeout on a Saturday around 2:00P. It was a late lunch, but there's no bad time for fried chicken! The restaurant wasn't busy at the time so our food was ready after about 20 minutes. I appreciated how they packed the chicken in open containers (safely secured in a bag) so that they retained their crispy skin on the way home. Each order of wings came with 12 pieces of meaty flats and drumettes! I thought the wings were going to be smaller, so this was a pleasant surprise. The chicken also included small containers of pickled radish to help cut the grease, but it was way too sour for me. + HALF & HALF CHICKEN ($21.99): This came with six pieces each of their original and Yangnyum flavor. The original was super crispy on the outside (you can hear the crunch!) and juicy inside, but they were unfortunately a little bland. A dash of salt or seasoning really would have done wonders. I loved the Yangnyum flavor though! These were coated in a sticky sweet and tangy sauce which also packed some heat. We requested three stars of spice which was just right. + HONEY GARLIC CHICKEN ($20.99): These were pretty good overall. I wish the garlic flavor was more powerful, but the honey glaze was delicious. It wasn't too sweet and provided a nice contrast to the hot Yangnyum. + SEAFOOD TOFU SOUP ($13.99): I loved this! The to-go serving ended up being enough for the three of us to split as a side dish to our chicken. It was chock full of silky tofu, but didn't have much seafood... just a few small shrimp and squid pieces. However, the broth had a rich seafood flavor throughout, so it must have been simmering for a while to fully develop. Since it came with a portion of rice and four little sides of banchan, this turned out to be a pretty good value. While the price of the chicken may seem a bit steep, the three of us considered it a nice treat. I'm a HUGE fan of The Third Place! This is our go-to Korean spot on the Eastside, particularly for soft tofu soup! The Third Place was really convenient during the pandemic when I would place the order to-go and the hubs would swing by on his way home. Initially we came through to try their KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) which is good, no doubt about it. But I really enjoyed their soft tofu soup, so this is our spot! Honestly, I feel like they give you more to-go than if you dine-in... I've also ordered their grilled mackarel on occassion and that is also delicious. Quality Korean food for sure! I came on a Friday evening and it wasnt super busy, and they were able to accommodate our party of 9 right away. We were seated in the back which was almost like a private room, which was really nice! I got the dolsot bibimbap with seafood, and we also got the honey garlic chicken to share amongst the table. It took a while to receive our food which was completely understandable, and not an issue at all. The dolsot bibimbap was the perfect portion, and came with so many different veggies! The squid and other seafood was a little underwhelming, but the veggies and crispy rice definitely made up for it. I do wish they provided a bit more sauce, though, since I found myself not having enough to mix in with the rice. The honey garlic chicken was super good!! Unfortunately given lots of people including myself actually rely on Yelp reviews, I feel obligated to provide the honest feedback. I think it is a 3.5 but rather than giving 3, I updated it to 4. Here is the list of things the place could improve to get back to 5. 1. They need to clean the place better. The window ledge is pretty dirty full of dusts. Since the table is right next to the ledge, it is very visible. 2. Update the interior. Because the bottom half of the windows is covered with the black paper and the upper half is blinds down, it cuts all the natural lights. This may be okay years ago but given all the new places have modern vibes, they should update the interior a bit to be more competitive. 3. The quality of food. They were good but nothing special. Perhaps a bit too salty. It wouldn't be a bad idea to update the menu a bit. I was truly excited when this place opened first time. I want them to be successful. Was feeling some crispy fried chicken and The Third Place popped on the search radar, so we decided to swing by and give it a try! We arrived on a Saturday at around 5:45pm and had a 20 minute wait to seat three. I was able to try three different varieties of chicken and an appetizer, which I'll review down below: Spicy Rice Cake: The rice cakes in this dish were a good size, slightly larger than the typical rice cakes that you can buy at the Asian grocery store - consistency was chewy and just right. The sauce itself wasn't too spicy, and overall a decent appetizer dish. Crispy Fried Chicken: The fried coating the wings were really crispy and not too oily. I haven't had Korean fried chicken before, so this was a good introduction for me, which even after eating 15 wings I didn't feel oily or sick from the fried-ness. The wings were moist inside and it set a good baseline in my mind personally for Korean fried chicken. Yangyum Fried Chicken: Basically the Crispy Fried chicken I described above with a sweet and very faint spiciness. I got the half and half plate and I thought it was a good contrast on switching flavors between the fried and yangyum chicken. I was personally expecting more spice, and was a bit surprised that the spiciness isn't noticeable at all unless you focus on it. I guess by default they give you level 1 for the half and half option. Honey Garlic Fried Chicken: This sauce had an interesting profile. I didn't like this flavor as much, as the flavor was a bit too sweet in my opinion. I only had a chance to try one of these wings and got the flavor received, so I can't imagine trying to eat 15 of these wings as I personally would have got overwhelmed by the flavor. But take my opinion with a grain of salt, if you enjoy these flavors, by all means, go for it! I thought the location did the best it could service-wise as there was mostly one waiter to service about 12 tables - but it was understandable due to current circumstances. Spent about $34 (after tax and tip) for the half and half + sharing the spicy rice cakes appetizer. They do give you decent amount of food based on the price you pay, which is nice. Was really really craving soup (I crave it often) and ordered an entire serving of Kimchi Stew for myself while the rest of my dance team ordered family style and got servings of fries, Cheese Tteokbokki, Fried Dumplings, Half & Half Chicken, and Tofu Soup etc. to share. We were a party of 10 so the service fees were included in our final bill, and it's worth noting that 1) their kitchen closes at 8 while the store closes at 9 (at least on a Sunday), and 2) you can only pay with one card out of a party so you have to do the Venmoing on your own time. Everything was delicious though and I inhaled my food way too fast given how hot it was. But it all came out surprisingly quickly and we got decent attention from the waitress. This was once our favorite restaurant in Redmond. We got busy so it's almost a year since we last ate here. However, the food quality has been declining a lot. We ordered seafood pancake and half and half chicken. The pancake had tiny bits of squid tentacles and almost no shrimp. It had too much green onion and the pancake texture was so dense. Last year the pancake was still good with good amount of seafood and no oily at all. The chicken batter and the sauce were changed. They used the bigger part of wings, which are cheaper. The chicken meat was like low grade Walmart chicken. The portions look bigger than they were but the quality is actually much worse. I was visiting the area and randomly found this spot and decided to try it out. Top notch food here. Everything I ate was delicious. Fried chicken wings are the staple and great. It's fried chicken, how can you go wrong? Sauces were solid and delicious. Pretty standard Korean fried chicken flavors Comes with some pickled radish, too. Japchae was a little expensive but it came with a ton of it! Flavors were spot on and exactly what I wanted from a japchae. Kimchee jeon was probably the most outstanding thing. Chicken was similar to most KFC places, but this kimchee jeon was exceptional. Crispy and full of goodness. Also huge so great to share for the whole table. Overall I was very happy coming here. The food here is great, as most main dishes come with sides. My favorite is their rice cake soup; it's salty, spicy, and simply hits the spot. It's best eaten fresh though I rarely can finish it in one sitting. The portions are large by default for many things there which means you'll need a friend to help you out. The service in general is average, as the place is small though sometimes they aren't as attentive as one may want a server to be. The overall ambiance of the place is also average. The first time I was seated to this place, me and my partner at the time were seated right by the pole which blocks us from the restaurant in an odd way. Other than that, the place is small and cute. The Third Place is currently my favorite place for Korean Fried Chicken. I've been here twice already and I'm already eager to go back! My favorite has got to be the original. It's so crunchy and flavorful and addictive. Honey garlic chicken was also really good! The yangnyum chicken (sweet and spicy) can certainly get very spicy! I thought I was pretty good with spice, but a level 2 had me tap out. Maybe start with level 1 unless you're really certain you can handle any spice!
