    Inadequate shipping protection
    David H.

I've been a customer at this store for ten months. In that time, I've shipped multiple large, high-value items where the shipping cost alone exceeded $100. In addition, I've shipped a number of smaller items, too. I would estimate I have spent, on large-item shipping, between $450 and $600 here since my first shipment. My experiences had been positive (three star --nothing good or bad) until my most recent shipping ordeal. Let me preface all this by saying that I went here the first time because one of my friends has known the manager since the late 1980s and vouched for him. During my first visit back in March 2013 the manager told me he specialized in shipping fragile and large items. He even added -- this is key -- that he personally packages and ships all the large and fragile items. My recent shipment was a photographic print washer. For context, it was huge and heavy and fragile, but not the largest nor most fragile thing I've shipped here. There exist very few of these washers left in the world in working condition as good as this one. Spoiler alert: there is one fewer. Would you like to see photos of how it arrived? When I have a better Internet connection, I'll upload some images of the damaged item in the store's photo section. When I received the photos from the buyer, my blood boiled. I paid $111 for shipping and when the girl behind the counter rang me up I specified -- three times -- double-weight extra strong packaging. I even pointed to their fragile item display and said "I want it packaged like that." She agreed and based on the price I believe that I paid for the additional cost associated with heavy boxes and appropriate foam. What did I receive? A single-weight box that has multiple stickers on, making me wonder if it had been used before, and GROSSLY INSUFFICIENT packaging material. Instead of packaging it in the manner which I asked for and asked to be charged for, they used a flimsy box that literally collapsed during shipment. The peanuts did not even fill 10% of the box. This was the most disappointing shipping job I have ever seen. So I decided because the owner is a buddy of my friends, and my friend says he is a stand-up guy, that I would give him the chance to make things right. The owner missed every chance every time as though he were trying to lose me as a customer. He insisted, without pulling up my account, that I had not paid for the added weight. When I said I had specified the robust packaging to the clerk, his response was "well, I didn't package it. So it isn't my fault." Those were his exact words. If you'd like to refer to the second paragraph, I'd point to the last sentence where I recall the manager's statement that he personally packages all fragile items. I was gobsmacked that a business owner would not take responsibility for his store nor for his employees. Let me tell you what happens at my job when someone working for me screws up. I also take responsibility because I support my team. When I screw up, want to know what my boss does? If you guessed also take responsibility, you guessed correctly. That is how I believe a good manager operates. The UPS Store manager said all he could do was file an insurance report with UPS but that I should not expect to hear from them. The exchange ended when another customer entered. The other customer began listening to me, so the manager, while I was in mid-sentence, walked away and began talking to the other customer. When he was done with that, he walked into his office. I cannot fathom the mindset that allows someone to believe the level of unprofessional customer service exhibited by this store's manager is acceptable in a competitive (or non-competitive, for that matter) marketplace. He may not realize how incredibly commoditized his product is. He has at least two competitors nearby who will be thrilled to take my money instead. And their prices are essentially the same. There is one bright spot in all this. When I told my friend about the manager, his buddy's, reaction to this issue, my friend, who is also a businessman, looked me dead in the eye and said "I have recommended him to people as long as he's been open. I will never again recommend him to anyone." And I know my friend will refer people elsewhere in the future. He was veined-forehead mad that he someone he refers people to would behave in this manner. So I hope the owner of this store languishes in the profit he made from shipping this item. It will be the last money he sees from me. Oh, and do I ship things often? For eBay sales, I ship up to 40 items in a busy week. None of that will ever come through this store again.

As we waited patiently during a long transaction, an older customer at an adjacent register complained that the product that he ordered wasn't what he expected, that it was unusable to him. He spoke reasonably and was frustrated. Pat Blume argued with him across the room, refused to address the problem in any way, and as the customer left, Mr. Blume looked at us and very audibly said, "A$$h0le." We left with our notarized documents, mailed them in, and then I got this message from my loan company today about an improperly completed document: "I tried to reach out to your notary, Pat Blume, but he refused to speak to me. He stated that he was busy at the time and asked me to call back later or not at all." Typically, I want to encourage folks to go to their local businesses, to support their neighbors. But Mr. Blume actively obstructed my getting my loan. He refused to be helpful when it would've taken very little of his time. And he calls his customers vulgar names when they leave. I suggest that - if he is so busy and dislikes his patrons so much - that we lighten some of that burden and make him less busy. I'll take my business somewhere else as a start.

This review is for the printing center!…read more I used the Printing Center to make some business cards, which in reality were cards going to be used for a best friends Celebration of Life token bags. I did the design myself on my phone. They got them done quickly and notified me right away. When I picked them up, I noticed that the printing was offset. There were two employees at the counter, one looked like a manager. I told them what happened, they jumped on it right away and was so friendly about it. It wasn't their fault, more of a computer printer error. Needless to say, they helped me re-upload my images, they insured the quality themselves on their computer, and showed me a sample before printing. They came out beautifully. I left with the new cards and nothing was a hassle. These ladies were the best!! They were so helpful and they maintained a very helpful and positive attitude. I appreciated the great experience they provided me! Thank you so much

Not at Staples in Concord, tho: Michelle, manager Dayna, and staff make this Staples an oasis of easy in a hard world. I needed flyers for a tenant organization finished - I did what I could on my own, but needed an expert to get my project over the finish line. Michelle was super patient and kind when I told her I was paying for everything myself and generously created an order I could afford. The flyers look awesome, and I left Staples with a huge smile and the knowledge that there are a whole lot of good people still in the world, humans who share their power rather than steal yours. Thank you, Michelle - you are awesome!

On Wednesday, February 18, I reached out needing two full sets of trial documents totaling more than 5,400 pages, with everything completed before the following Monday. After calling multiple large chain print shops and being told the turnaround wasn't possible, I contacted Copymat and spoke with Shawn, the owner. Shawn and his team immediately stepped in with professionalism, clear communication, and a genuine willingness to help. They completed the entire project by Friday morning, allowing me to finalize everything by Friday afternoon and stay fully on track for trial. The quality of the work was excellent, the turnaround was incredibly fast, and the customer service truly went above and beyond. It was a huge relief during a stressful week, and I'm extremely grateful for their help. Copymat Walnut Creek absolutely saved the day for our firm, and we will definitely continue using their services. Experiences like this are exactly why supporting local small businesses matters.

He dutifully checked our IDs, and ensured that all the paperwork, fingerprints and logging were done carefully and properly. Best of all, each signature was very inexpensive, as we only had two signatures to be recorded - $15/signature, which is the going rate for getting notary services at a local copy/mail/package estabilshment like this. Yes, we shopped around! And best of all, the notary at Copymat is always here, unlike other package shipping/copy places where notary services aren't always available. I would not hesitate to call upon Copymat again for future notary duties in this area! Thanks Copymat, you got the job done for us!
