Wow! I've been in Atlanta 15 years and never stepped foot inside this staple for the city - embarrassing! lol None the less, with this being my first time, it bought back diner like child hood memories. Think of milkshakes, hamburgers, and hotdogs! Good ole American food. My and babe went and got the chilli dog and naked dog meals along with a chilli burger. We selected both the fries and the onion rings. He devoured my fries and the onion rings were delish! I thoroughly enjoyed the retro vibe and am looking forward to going again.
I had to make an apology to my friend group for dragging them here on a local friend's recommendation. I get it, it's an Atlanta staple and perhaps an iconic spot in terms of its ATL history, and I can respect that. But I also got to keep it real, this was one of the worst fast food experiences I've had. It's a classic old school diner vibe with the options of various hotdogs, burgers and milkshakes on the menu. And I do like its retro charm. But the food? Rough. We tried a little bit of everything and my whole group agreed it was the worst meal of the trip. Personally, I didn't hate it quite as much as they did, but let's just say I'd pick a Costco hot dog over whatever that hot dog was. The onion rings were greasy in a bad way, the burger was forgettable, and overall it reminded me of the mystery meats from my 5th grade cafeteria days... definitely not a compliment. The ordering process and pickup is very efficient. There's plenty of tables despite the restaurant being fairly busy for a weekend. It wasn't very clean though, plenty of trash and dirty/sticky floors. I'm glad I got to try it and see the history to check it off the list, but the food was not worth it. (just checkout all the 1 star reviews of this place if you want an interesting read)
My father in law grew up in Athens, Ga and a staple of his youth was The Varsity. This joint holds a piece of his heart. We landed in Atlanta this late afternoon so of course my father in law suggested The Varsity for dinner. We didn't say no. The last time we ate at the Varsity, it was a complete different set up. It was a sister location that was off the interstate. We ordered at the window and we sat outside. My father in law said it's not the vibe isn't the same as the original joint. And it's true. Coming to the downtown location is so different from the first Variety we ate at. They were busy today. They had quite a few registers open and there were multiple guests at each. A young man helped us today. He was nice. Wasn't the fastest employee but slowly but surely he got our order taken care of. While our order was being finalized, I didn't realize how big this place is! There's so many different rooms to eat at. I love all the different art piece in each room. And as big as this place was, every room was clean! For dinner I got the chili burger and chili dog combo. I grabbed onion rings and a orange creamsicle drink. My husband got the same with fries and a pc. My chili burger and chili dig were good. They weren't the biggest hot dog or hamburger patty but it got the job done. The orange creamsicle was good! It was rich she creamy. The onion rings were really salty for some reason. The fries were tasty! And for some strange reason, chocolate milk and chewy ice is such a winning combination! Peach pie is a must! Beware of first bite cause that peach filling is like hot lava. Each bite of that pie is so good! It was cool to come here and check out my father in law's past. I loved seeing all the different rooms and art work in each one of them. The food was good for a burger joint. This will probably be one of the only times I will be here so I'm happy I got to experience it.
I saw The Varsity on a food show years ago and it's been on my list ever since. Was in Atlanta for parents weekend and was beyond excited to realize I was only a block away. It's such a cool, iconic spot. From the outside it looks like it might seat 50 to 100 people, but inside, it's vast with room after room of places to sit, looks like it could easily sit 400 people, cool wall decor that is a throwback to early college days, TVs everywhere and a cool "old school" vibe. It's the perfect spot for pregame or late night happiness. You order at the counter from a pretty basic menu of mostly burgers and dogs and fries and onion rings with lots of soda choices. There had to be at least 12 lines going at one time, each cashier with their own special "attitude" of almost being exasperated to work there, a little unfriendly, but yet in an endearing kind of way. Be sure to grab your free, paper "the varsity" retro hat and wear it with pride. We ordered a couple burgers, chili dogs, fries, onion rings, and sodas. They were all better than expected. This is no high-end, five diamond, bougie, fluffy food joint, this is beyond fantastic, greasy burgers, cheesy chili dogs, incredible hand cut fries, and mounds of greasy, delicious onion rings. Exactly what you'd want from a mid afternoon, pregame, "feels like the backyard" grill session. The burger and dog buns are soft and steamy, chewy and delicious. The cheese is literally craft American slices, torn into strips and thrown on a chili dog, where the dog is firm, meaty heaven, with a massive scoop of smooth, rich, chili, and perfect "kid reminiscent" torn slices of craft American cheese, straight out of the cellophane wrapper. The burger patties are perfectly beefy and delicious, smashed down with nothing but a soft, chewy, steamy, buttered, and grilled bun slopped on a paper plate that brings back a million memories of perfect backyard grilling. Go refill your soda as many times as you'd like and hang out at a table or wooden booth in the comfy, minimalist atmosphere, surrounded by televisions on different channels in each room. I loved this experience, the atmosphere is perfect, the food is outstanding, the service was all that it needed to be, and the prices aren't bad for all that you get, could not have asked for much more. Would I go back? Absolutely! I wish this place was closer, I'd be there at least once per week. Check out the attached photos for a good feel of the joint.
If you're like me who grew up watching travel shows and content you probably have seen a segment or two about this place. It was cool to see this place I've seen on tv not too far from where I live. When asked about it, all my local friends, Atlanta born and raised, all said the same thing, "Don't waste your time." Well after years of living here I folded and curiosity got the best of me. I should've listened. If your employees are trained to be rude, which I assume they are because the box the food comes in has their abrupt phrase "what'll ya have?", your food better be great! It's not. It's borderline cafeteria food. I ordered a few things: a burger, a cheese dog, chicken nuggets, an orange drink and fries, but they gave me onion rings instead. Out of all of that, the burger was tolerable and the orange drink was good but it was nothing memorable. The hot dog was abysmal and the chicken nuggets were laughable. I'm not sure how this is a landmark worthy of travel content.
Cool vibe and great service, terrible food. Burger tasted greasy and just soft, barely cooked burger. The fries are under salted, floppy, and just terrible. Apple pie wasn't bad but you mostly come for how iconic the restaurant is. Probably tastes great at 1am drunk out of your mind but nobody searching for good food should come here.
The VARSITY is a "happening place!!" It's got a very popular vibe the second you walk in. It's like going back in time to an old diner. All I could hear was Chelsey, the manager at the register, LOUDLY saying the phrase, " WHAT'LL YOU HAVE, WHAT'LL YOU HAVE?" During the time we were there, she must have said that phrase well over 100 times!! She alone was worth the price of admission!! She's like the caller at the Circus, auction, or Square Dance!! We had 2 chili cheese dogs with raw onions and 2 slaw dogs. Unfortunately, the chili dogs were a disappointment. The sweetness of the slaw helped to make the dog very tasty. Come here for the atmosphere, not the food. It's not a bargain either.
When in Atlanta... gotta stop here. It was my 1st time here and the food is pretty much wheat I expected. The service was pleasant and quick. I did ask for onions on my dogs and didn't get them. I ordered the 2 hot dog special and a steak bacon triple cheese burger. I even ordered the apple pie for dessert The hot dogs were pretty good and the burger was your typical burger. I was a bit disappointed in the apple pie. When I saw fried apple pie, I was thinking 1980's Colton lava hot crisp McDonald's apple pie.... this was not. Oh well, I got to experience the Varsity!
I've been to the location in Norcross a few years ago. They call that location The Jr Varsity. It was so long ago I had to familiar myself with the grub. I got a #1 2'chilli dogs with onion rings and a orange soda I should have gotten ice water because when I eat something sweet I never like drinking something sweet. I also got #2 a chilli cheese dog and burger with rings just because. I also got a apple and peach pie omg delicious! The food is delicious to me long time eating a chilli dog or burger at all the rings hit. I tasted my drink like maybe 2 to 4 times. The drink is good but don't be like me and get pies to much sweets at one time for me. I didn't save it for later though because I know me. I visited 8-22-2025.
Fun old school diner with lots of charm! I've passed this place and its other locations countless times over the years and have always said one day I'd have to make it in. Last week, it finally happened! I was working on a TV show that was filming down the road from here, so when we wrapped early, my coworkers came up with the idea to stop by for lunch. We entered the bustling building to a counter stretched as far as the eye could see! Being from Orlando originally, it reminded me a lot of the restaurant setups at theme parks. The ordering process is interesting! You place your order and instead of waiting at your table or standing aside for your number to be called, you just wait at the register and they move quickly to get you your items in real time. I ordered a chili cheese dog with onions (the associate said they couldn't put them on the hotdog, but could give them to me on the side--I'm guessing this is what helps them be speedy), and a side of french fries. Although the restaurant was very busy, we were able to find a table in the windowed tunnel dining area (I'm not sure what to call it exactly). It was cool. The food itself is okay! My chili cheese dog wasn't the greatest I've ever had, but it was still enjoyable. The fries reminded me a bit of the ones at Five Guys, but needed some more salt to compete with theirs. I enjoyed my friend's onion rings more--those were pretty great! Nicely breaded and fried! I also tried a sip of his FO (frozen orange milkshake) which tasted nostalgic and refreshing. Next time, I want to try the cheeseburger (my other friend got one and hers looked really good!). I look forward to coming back!

Seeing this was an instruction in Atlanta, we had to try. We just relocated to Atlanta is it was our first chance to come here. At arrival on a Friday afternoon, the place was dead. Maybe a bad sign? This was the beginning. Well...absolutely horrible customer service. They are slow and flat out rude. When I ordered the girl (Badjie) behind the counter acted like I was bothering her so much and was rolling her eyes while I spoke. She was very curt and rushed me to order. I get it, This place is no frills but basic customer service wouldn't hurt. The food we received was cold and soggy. The only decent tasting items are the cheeseburgers and slaw dogs. We wanted to buy some souvenirs but no one was at the counter. Rang the bell...still no one for 5 minutes. Don't waste your time or money otherwise. Probably not going back. read more
Wednesday afternoon must be a good time to come to this Atlanta Iconic place called VARSITY...The fun place to eat. I had visions of a packed house with Georgia Tech students. No worries on this wednesday; we parked up front and walked right up to the counter. We were greeted with a smile as if she knew we were first timers. What'll ya have, What'll ya have?..The lovely missus and #1 son and yes, me too, ordered the hot dog...one order with onions, one order with cheese and one order just chili. The warm sausage inside the soft bun and the chili was 'a just right' tasting one...For good dessert we also ordered an apple pie and a yummy sweet potato pie. Yes, this is a fun place to eat as there was plenty of rooms and tables to choose from. VARSITY made our experience exploring Atlanta a really good one...and we learned there are 5 more locations. First off, how can you not grab a Frosted Orange when you visit the Varsity? This spot has been a staple in Atlanta for years. I don't visit often, but sometimes you just get that craving for a greasy burger with fries and the classic FO. Service is usually good. It can get busy, so expect some tables to have trash on it since they are typically understaffed. Good atmosphere for fast food. I'll return if I'm ever in the mood for a decent fast food meal with the best drink (Frozen Orange). read more
The well known burger, hot dog and shake diner near mid town and Georgia Tech that features super fast and friendly service. Classic design and low prices that should be part of a summer drive through the city. The hamburger and fries are OK, but the chili dog and onion rings, via the #1 combo is the way to go. There is a separate shake bar inside and I can vouch for the vanilla! If you want to stay in the car they have a an area for window service. Easy access from 75 but you know Atlanta traffic so plan accordingly. read more

A must have when visiting Atlanta. We came here as kids- and I love coming back every time I am in town. The chili dogs with mustard are a perfect combination with their homemade onion rings and an ice cold Coke. Also- can't go wrong with a chocolate shake to top it all off! Their drive-thru is currently closed - but when it's open, it's a convenient snack break when driving through ATL. read more

I have been visiting Georgia for almost 27 years, so I'm particularly a local. lol However, out of all my years traveling to GA, I realized I had never been the Varsity. Varsity is a throwback in time with the carhops and simple items on the menu. So on my reason visit to Atlanta, I decided to stop by this location. Literally, this was my 1st spot once I left the airport. This spot is located downtown, and it is the original location. It is easy to get to being that the restaurant is a few feet from the North Avenue Marta station and adjacent to the Downtown Connector's interchange (I-75/85) with North Avenue. Its an enormous restaurant that sits on 2 city blocks and can hold 800 people inside. There is a parking garage for this location (free to Varsity customers). When I 1st arrived I went inside and it looked like a MTA subway tunnel (NYC) at 3 pm. So I got back in my car and drove 2 blocks and then it hit me .....go to the carhop. So I pulled up and a gentlemen took my order and my food was delivered to my car in about 10 mins. As a fellow Yelp Elite told me, you don't go to the Varsity for the food you go for the experience of a classic Southern fast food spot. Cheeseburger: 3/5: A simple and to the point burger ; I really felt like I got my money's worth being that it was $2.28. Frosted Orange 3.5/5: Heard good things about this drink an I was glad I order it. It was not too sweet , not to creamy. It almost tasted like orange dreamsicles .. the good stuff!! My family and I drive from Cincinnati to Sarasota, Florida every year for the past 12 years. Each time we stop at the Varsity in Atlanta Georgia. The dogs are amazing and the people are incredible. I finally checked this legendary Atlanta establishment off my food bucket list! It's just fast food, but it's really the experience that makes this place, not to mention the food is better than a typical fast food joint. Atmosphere: The inside restaurant is huge, covering two city blocks, and located right next to the Georgia Tech campus, which I am sure is no accident. We decided the drive-in was the best way to experience this old restaurant that started in the late 1920's. We were greeted with "What'll ya have? What'll ya have?". I responded "What?" Which was followed by another "What'll ya have? What'll ya have?" LOL. It turns out this is their famous greeting. The soft buns are like homemade bread or soft rolls. Great quality! FOOD RECOMMENDATIONS - Burgers: patties are small. I recommend a double burger if you want a full meal. I also recommend that you "glorify" it (adds lettuce tomatoes and mayo). I ordered the bacon double cheese burger. The burgers are small and thin like you'd expect from fast food. - Chili cheese dogs: My wife ordered a regular chili cheese dog and a second one with slaw. The slaw was a bit too sweet for our taste and would recommend the dog without the slaw. The Coney Island style chili was delicious, similar to canned chili from grocery store. - Fries: very good. Cut from potatoes and you can still see the tator skin. They needed salt but that's easy to add. They were floppy, not crispy, and tasted great. - Onion rings. They are tasty but a bit too greasy for us. They were floppy style, not crispy. - Frozen Orange (FO) shake. They call it a "FO" and it's a signature item, so I had to try it. I was not disappointed. It's not really a shake, but more of a frozen slushy that's blended creamy smooth. It's not sugary or syrupy. It's not cream heavy, perhaps made with a little milk. It's was a refreshing finish to my meal. TIPS - You can order your burger "glorified" which means it will come with lettuce, tomato and mayo. - You must tell the waiter what you want on your burger. - Don't be bashful if you don't know how the ordering works (we didn't). The waitstaff may be a little short and direct with you, but will help you place an order. - In the drive-in, roll the drivers side window down but leave 2-3in of window exposed so they can set the food tray on it. read more

In a recent visit, we stopped by The Varsity. There were lots of people in line but also several cashiers taking orders so things should've moved along quickly. We were in line for 25 minutes. The workers were in no hurry, were not friendly, and seemed to care less how well they did their jobs. I was hoping the food was going to be worth the wait and hassle but I was sorely disappointed. The fries were old and soggy, zero salt, and honestly I've had better burgers from Wendy's. The dining room we ate in, the ESPN room, wasn't particularly clean either. We will definitely not be returning on any future visits. read more
The Varsity was all I imagined it being. That is to say the service was quick and friendly, the food was worth its cheaper price, and the atmosphere is definitely fun to experience a time or two! The food: Chili dog, onion rings, and a peach pie. The chili dog was highlighted by some fantastic chili that I really enjoyed mixed with the mustard. The onion rings were battered to perfection and were a greasy mess a (+ or -) depending on how you look at it! Lastly, the homemade peach pie was delicious and very easily worth the $2. No this place doesn't have the best food in the entire world or Atlanta for that matter. But if you enjoy an occasional greasy fast food meal this is the place to fill that craving! It just helps that the prices are cheap and the atmosphere is really unique and classic. read more

Three giant YELP stars for the experience! The food is just so so, but you have to do it. I was here 7 years ago and decided to go again on New Years day after a trip to the aquarium. Nothing has changed. Nothing. Service is part of the charm. You want to hear the servers yelling at you. I enjoyed that. The food is just ok, and on this visit my bacon cheeseburger was cold. My slaw dog was pretty good. Fries were just ok. It was busy, but not like last time when the lines were snaking through the restaurant. I think The Varsity may be losing some of it's charm. Kind of sad really. I will be back for sure. My kids still love it just like they did when they were young. read more

I like to think that The Varsity is like what McDonald's was like before mass production. It's a classic, vintage drive-in burger joint. I came here for a late dinner Saturday night while in town from St. Louis. I had seen this restaurant from the highway 10 years ago when I last visited Atlanta and again this second visit, and felt like I HAD to finally check it out before heading back home. I pulled up to the drive-in around 11/11:30pm. They were packed! I had a slight wait for service, but once served, my food came out really fast. I ordered a double cheeseburger, fries, small sweet tea, and small chocolate shake. The food was just ok. Nothing came on the burger except meat and cheese. I was given a lot of mustard and ketchup packets, which helped doctor my plain small burger, but still some lettuce, onions, pickles, and tomatoes would have been fantastic! The shake wasn't bad, but wasn't the best shake I've ever had either (I prefer Steak n' Shake's chocolate shake over The Varsity's). Even still, the nostalgia, speedy service, and reasonable prices make this place a jewel in the A. I'm glad I checked it out. read more

If you want fast food that's good, cheap, and worth trying when in the ATL...come to The Varsity! I believe in great customer service, especially during hard times like these, and the workers here are so so very hospitable and respectful!!! If the food didn't taste good, I'd still give them 5 stars!! What we ordered: Bacon Cheeseburger w/ everything- hubby approved Chili Slaw Dog w/extra onions add Rings- yumm! Plain & simple and those onion rings were fire! Apple Pie- great taste even better crust Peach Pie- same as above! read more

Worst hot dog ever. Easiest meal to fix, yet somehow along the way it was SCREWED UP. Four hot dogs, fry, onion rings and two medium drinks equaled a little over $28.00. Food was wasted because we did not eat it. Definitely not worth it. Spend your money elsewhere read more

This place is huge and when I say huge, they have their own parking structure and right behind it is parking for buses!!! Since I was a stone throw away from the place, I decided to stop by and give them a try. They have pull up service, where you can pull up your car to the car port and they will take your order or park and walk in. When you walk in, just find the line that is the shortest, the lines will move quickly... I went with the #1 combo (two chili dogs) with onion rings and Diet Coke, also got an order of their fried apple pie. I go my order, found a table and enjoyed the meal. Chili Dogs - while they were good, but they are not as good as those in Detroit. Being a Michigan native, I had share of my coney dogs and yes, the chilis are different depending on where you go, but their chili dogs, while still good, is not up there compared to chili dogs from Michigan. Fried Apple Pie - excellent, if you have room, grab two!! Onion Rings - great onion rings!!!! Fried to perfection, crispy and delicious!!!! The place is in heart of Atlanta and unfortunately you'll run into some folks asking you for some money, so be mindful and do know what you do not have to give them money. If you are not in downtown, they do have other locations, so if you are in ATL, stop by for some hotdogs!!! read more

First Impression Review. "What'll ya have... What'll ya have?" , from the moment you walk in you realize what true southern hospitality is. The staff is very friendly. This location is set up to cater to the masses. From the large ordering counters to the different seating arrangements. This isn't "fast food", it is just food done fast. When you have to deal with game day crowds, you begin to understand how and why the food is comes out fast with slight variations in consistency. Ended up ordering a Combo # 8 Two CHILI CHEESE SLAW DOG (Chili dog with mustard, cheese and slaw on a toasted bun) with Onion Rings and a Coke. Talk about amazing flavor. The cool slaw went really well with the chili cheese. I'm so glade I order it. Had to go with a Coke seeing I was in Coca-Cola land. I can see why this is an iconic place to eat in Atlanta. I look forward to coming back. read more

We were recommended this place by multiple people... needless to say we were not impressed! To slow counter people, greasy soggy fries... and the "famous orange drink" was not that good! We even tried the "famous pies" which was mostly just pie crust... sorry probably won't ever go back! read more

A great place for nostalgia if you grew up going to Varsity, but otherwise, it's not worth your time. The burgers were dry and the fries were small but crispy though. The meals were that of a school cafeteria. Come for the experience, and move on with your day. read more

Apparently this is a must try if you ever visit Atlanta. Unfortunately, I was not able to try the first two visits to GA..but finally made it here when my fiance was showing me around the city. We came and it was crowded AF! There are multiple lines but they moved. Me being chatty me, I ended up making friends with the couple in front of me.. they were from south of the city and shared suggestions with us. They def said try the onion rings + shakes. I ended up trying the burgers and hot dog with chili (don't judge lol) and onion rings. I found out later my friend said to use the paprika they set at the tables..oops. Overall the food wasn't terrible, it also wasn't A+ or anything either. I liked the atmosphere of the varsity. I felt like it was very 60s diner. Fast paced. The place was filled with people lots of families. People seemed to be coming from church or their events. I guess it's a nice hang out spot. I think I'd return IF I was in the area and maybe try other items lol Notes: Parking is free. read more
Food is tasteless and below average. The big hype is because it's a historic fast food restaurant in Atlanta and the biggest drive through fast food restaurant in the world. If you do happen to find yourself in the area and want to support this restaurant...I recommend trying the orange frosty drink. Most people who got food recommended the chili dog. read more

There is drive thru, and inside dine in or to go. I didn't see any outdoor seating.
